Inclusive and Inelastic Scattering in Neutrino-Nucleus Interactions

Neutrino-nucleus cross section measurements can provide both insights into nuclear physics and important data that can be used to improve model predictions used for neutrino oscillation physics. Two measurements of neutrino-nucleus cross sections were performed using data from the MINERvA experiment, each probing different classes of neutrino interactions. Double and single-differential flux-integrated measurements of inclusive charged current neutrino-nucleus cross sections at a peak neutrino energy of 3.5 GeV are presented as a function of the longitudinal and transverse momentum of the muon produced in the interaction. Additionally, an analysis of charged-current deep inelastic scattering (DIS) of muon neutrinos was performed in carbon, iron, lead and hydrocarbon in a neutrino beam with a peak energy of 6 GeV. Cross sections were measured in each material, and ratios were also taken between the cross sections of each of the materials and hydrocarbon, allowing for examination of nuclear dependencies of the neutrino cross section. Absolute DIS cross sections as a function of neutrino energy and flux integrated differential cross sections as a function of the Bjorken-x scaling variable were both measured.

Evaluation of AI-enabled Digital Documented Safety Analysis

The National Reactor Innovation Center (NRIC) is leading a transformative initiative to accelerate advanced reactor deployment by fundamentally reimagining how nuclear safety basis documentation is developed, reviewed, and maintained. Traditional Documented Safety Analysis (DSA) processes for DOE-authorized facilities rely on static, document-centric workflows that consume significant time and resources, exemplified by recent major licensing efforts requiring hundreds of thousands of staff hours and millions of pages of documentation review. These conventional approaches create barriers to the rapid, cost-effective deployment of advanced reactors that America's future energy needs demand. NRIC's DOE Authorization Digital Transformation Project addresses these challenges through an innovative framework that integrates artificial intelligence (AI), digital engineering, and systems-based data management into a cohesive digital ecosystem. This white paper presents NRIC's methodology for evaluating AI-enabled document generation capabilities within this broader digital infrastructure, using the Demonstration of Microreactor Experiments (DOME) facility as a pilot case study. The evaluation will assess an AI tool's ability to generate a Preliminary Documented Safety Analysis (PDSA) through progressive integration stages—from standalone document processing to full digital thread connectivity—while maintaining rigorous verification, validation, and regulatory acceptance standards. By establishing dynamic, traceable connections between design data and safety documentation, NRIC's approach has the potential to reduce both document development time and regulatory review cycles by as much as 50%, while simultaneously improving accuracy, consistency, and traceability. This initiative represents a critical step toward establishing reusable digital infrastructure that reactor developers can leverage to accelerate their path from concept to commercial operation, directly supporting NRIC's mission to demonstrate and deploy advanced nuclear energy technologies.

Degradation of REBCO coated conductors due to a combination of epoxy impregnation, thermal cycles, and quench: Characteristics and a method of alleviation

REBa2Cu3Ox (REBCO) coated conductors are an enabling technology for >1 GHz nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers that need >23.5 T solenoids, compact high-field fusion reactors beyond the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, and 20 T class accelerator magnets. An in-depth understanding of stress and strain management is critically needed for these applications. Here, we report experimental data and an analysis of damages of REBCO-coated conductors in several scenarios relevant for their applications in high-field magnets and unique to their multi-layer thin film structure. The examined scenarios include failure induced by quench, failure induced by epoxy impregnation, and failure induced by a combination of epoxy impregnation and quench. The root cause is film blistering and peeling induced by thermally interfacial stresses characteristic of multilayered heteroepitaxial thin film structures on thick substrates utilized. The quantitative stress analysis is introduced using simple and easy to use formulas and clearly indicates how materials and structural characteristics affect the magnitude and the distribution of stresses and deflections. Finally, a simple method is introduced for removing degradation of REBCO coated conductors due to epoxy impregnation. Our data and analysis help our understanding of the practical limit of REBCO-coated conductors and can be utilized as a guidance for the physical design of REBCO coated conductors and high-current cables assembled from them and for minimizing damages.

Irradiation of MiniFuel Targets Bearing TRISO Fuel Compacts (Status Report)

Irradiation testing of MiniFuel compacts bearing tristructural isotropic (TRISO) fuel particles was performed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to support the development of Kairos Power’s (KP’s) fluoride salt–cooled high-temperature reactor concept. The fuel compacts were fabricated with TRISO fuel particles of different types—including low-enriched uranium oxide, uranium carbide (LEUCO), natural uranium oxide, uranium carbide (NUCO), and low-enriched uranium dioxide (LEUO 2 )—and inserted into MiniFuel irradiation targets. Five targets were assembled and inserted in the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) for four cycles. The data collected post-irradiation will provide experimental input to validate TRISO fuel performance models for high particle power operations. This report summarizes the completion of the HFIR irradiation, the as-irradiated numerical analysis, and the post-irradiation work performed to date. This work was performed under the Nuclear Science User Facility program.

ASME Code change proposal to implement new universal high temperature constitutive models for Section III, Division 5

This report completes work on a universal high temperature constitutive model suitable for use with the ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code Section III, Division 5 rules for the design by inelastic analysis of Class A nuclear reactor components. The goals of this work are to provide a simple model form that adequately captures the high temperature response of materials and can be applied to any future Code material. Additionally, the report describes an automated process for calibrating a model against test data. The idea is to simplify the effort required to generate a constitutive model for an arbitrary material, provided test data is available. This will accelerate the process of qualifying new Code materials in the future. In addition, the report provides calibrated models and detailed validation comparisons to test data for five currently-qualified or soon-to-be qualified materials: 316H, Grade 91, Alloy 800H, Alloy 617, and Alloy 709. The report surveys the available data for the remaining two ASME Class Materials --- 2.25Cr-1Mo and 304H --- concluding that there is enough data data to generate a model for 2.25Cr-1Mo steel provided some additional sources of non-public data can be included in the test database, but that a dedicated cyclic test campaign would be needed for 304H. Supplemental material includes the full text of an ASME Code change proposal to incorporate the models for the four currently-qualified Class A material, detailed validation comparisons to test data for the five material models, and input files for reference implementations of the constitutive models in the NEML and NEML2 modeling frameworks.

Remote Assessment of Lunar Resource Potential

Assessing the resource potential of the lunar surface requires a well-planned program to determine the chemical and mineralogical composition of the Moon's surface at a range of scales. The exploration program must include remote sensing measurements (from both Earth's surface and lunar orbit), robotic in situ analysis of specific places, and eventually, human field work by trained geologists. Remote sensing data is discussed. Resource assessment requires some idea of what resources will be needed. Studies thus far have concentrated on oxygen and hydrogen production for propellant and life support, He-3 for export as fuel for nuclear fusion reactors, and use of bulk regolith for shielding and construction materials. The measurement requirements for assessing these resources are given and discussed briefly.

Exergy Efficiency of Interplanetary Transfer Vehicles

In order to optimize systems, systems engineers require some sort of measure with which to compare vastly different system components. One such measure is system exergy, or the usable system work. Exergy balance analysis models provide a comparison of different system configurations, allowing systems engineers to compare different systems configuration options. This paper presents the exergy efficiency of several Mars transportation system configurations, using data on the interplanetary trajectory, engine performance, and vehicle mass. The importance of the starting and final parking orbits is addressed in the analysis, as well as intermediate hyperbolic escape and entry orbits within Earth and Mars' spheres of influence (SOIs). Propulsion systems analyzed include low-enriched uranium (LEU) nuclear thermal propulsion (NTP), high-enriched uranium (HEU) NTP, LEU methane (CH4) NTP, and liquid oxygen (LOX)/liquid hydrogen (LH2) chemical propulsion.

Recovering the phase and amplitude of X-ray FEL pulses using neural networks and differentiable models

Dynamics experiments are an important use-case for X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs), but time-domain measurements of the X-ray pulses themselves remain a challenge. Shot-by-shot X-ray diagnostics could enable a new class of simpler and potentially higher-resolution pump-probe experiments. Here, we report training neural networks to combine low-resolution measurements in both the time and frequency domains to recover X-ray pulses at high-resolution. Critically, we also recover the phase, opening the door to coherent-control experiments with XFELs. The model-based generative neural-network architecture can be trained directly on unlabeled experimental data and is fast enough for real-time analysis on the new generation of MHz XFELs.

Data Efficiency Assessment of Generative Adversarial Networks for Critical Heat Flux Synthetic Data Generation

This study investigates the application of generative artificial intelligence techniques, particularly conditional generative adversarial networks (cGAN), in real-world engineering contexts, with a specific focus on synthetic data generation for critical heat flux (CHF). Utilizing a dataset comprising more than 20,000 real experimental CHF measurements, we conduct a series of experiments to examine cGAN’s behavior. These experiments encompass varying sizes of the training dataset, training cGAN on data from diverse experimental sources to generate new data on unseen experimental setups, and assessing the impact of excluding various input features on cGAN’s data generation accuracy. Our findings underscore the pronounced data dependency of cGAN for reliable performance, with decreased efficacy observed with smaller training dataset sizes. Notably, cGAN exhibits varying performance when trained on data from different experiments, with superior predictive capabilities observed for certain experiment sources compared to others. For instance, when cGAN was trained on data from Smolin et al.’s experiments or Zenkevich et al., it exhibited relatively good performance in generating the data from Becker et al., Kirillov et al., and Alekseev et al. experiments. In contrast, when trained with Alekseev et al.’s data and tasked with generating other experimental setups, cGAN showed notably poor performance. In both scenarios, cGAN’s performance was inferior compared to training on samples from all experiments concurrently. A feature importance analysis highlights the significant influence of parameters such as mass flux and heated length on accurate CHF generation, while other parameters like diameter and pressure have less impact. Inlet temperature is identified as a moderating factor by cGAN.
