Space Communications and Navigation Validation: Extracting Data for the Strategic Center for Networking, Integration, and Communications Scheduling Algorithms

Efficiency in communication system architecture performance between Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) assets and missions is crucial, as space communication is varied, complex, and often not utilized to its full potential. The SCaN Strategic Center for Networking, Integration, and Communications (SCENIC) new scheduling algorithms, which are designed to simulate the allocation of resources between SCaN assets and missions, have the potential to simulate an increase of this efficiency; however, they require real-world data to be validated against. The purpose of this project was to extract said validation data, which details the frequency and duration of utilized contact windows between missions and assets in the Near Earth Network (NEN), Space Network (SN), and Deep Space Network (DSN). Stored as images in daily operations summaries (DOSs), the tabular data existed in a variety of file formats such as.pdf, .docx, and .doc. Since the tables were stored as images, ABBYY® FineReader® (ABBYY Software Ltd.) optical character recognition (OCR) was implemented, which is a proprietary software that reads images from text. The comma separated value (CSV) output was utilized as input to a series of MATLAB® (The MathWorks, Inc.) methods for reformatting, at which point it was ready to be machine-read. Finally, the results were converted to a Microsoft Excel format for human readability. Along with being used for validation purposes, the data will also be used to map equipment degradation as a function of time to analyze the reliability of network assets.

Innovative dead-time correction and background subtraction for neutron multiplicity measurements using neural networks

Abstract The number of neutrons emitted from a nuclear reaction plays a crucial role in various fields, including nuclear theory, nuclear nonproliferation, nuclear energy and nuclear criticality safety. Accurate determination of neutron multiplicities requires the application of several corrections, with dead-time correction and background subtraction being particularly significant. These corrections become more challenging for neutron detectors with time-dependent neutron capture. In this work, we perform a comprehensive study of three existing methods used for dead-time correction and background subtraction in neutron detectors with time-dependent neutron capture. The methods were tested for dead-times in the range from 0 to 1 μs using a Monte Carlo model simulating the dead-time and background effects in the standard neutron multiplicity probability distribution of $$^{252}$$ 252 Cf. The previous methods showed larger than desired uncertainty or systematic trade off. Those uncertainties prompted the development of a novel approach using neural networks trained with data from Monte Carlo simulations. The Neural Network method enabled the correction of neutron multiplicity probabilities more accurately than the other methods with fractional errors smaller than 3% for multiplicities around the peak of $$^{252}$$ 252 Cf. A similar approach using neural networks could be applied to problems where the system being studied can be accurately simulated without having an accurate analytical description available. The neural network method presented in this paper can be easily expanded if multiplicities greater than 10 are expected.

Opposing Hysteresis Patterns in Flow and Outflow Macroscopic Fundamental Diagrams and Their Implications

Two key aggregated traffic models are the relationship between average network flow and density (known as the network or flow macroscopic fundamental diagram [flow-MFD]) and the relationship between trip completion and density (known as network exit function or the outflow-MFD [o-FMD]). The flow- and o-MFDs have been shown to be related by average network length and average trip distance under steady-state conditions. However, recent studies have demonstrated that these two relationships might have different patterns when traffic conditions are allowed to vary: the flow-MFD exhibits a clockwise hysteresis loop, while the o-MFD exhibits a counter-clockwise loop. One recent study attributes this behavior to the presence of bottlenecks within the network. The present paper demonstrates that this phenomenon may arise even without bottlenecks present and offers an alternative, but more general, explanation for these findings: a vehicle’s entire trip contributes to a network’s average flow, while only its end contributes to the trip completion rate. This lag can also be exaggerated by trips with different lengths, and it can lead to other patterns in the o-MFD such as figure-eight patterns. A simple arterial example is used to demonstrate this explanation and reveal the expected patterns, and they are also identified in real networks using empirical data. Then, simulations of a congestible ring network are used to unveil features that might increase or diminish the differences between the flow- and o-MFDs. Finally, more realistic simulations are used to confirm that these behaviors arise in real networks.

Using CAD/CAM to improve productivity - The IPAD approach

Progress in designing and implementing CAD/CAM systems as a result of the NASA Integrated Programs for Aerospace-Vehicle Design is discussed. Essential software packages have been identified as executive, data management, general user, and geometry and graphics software. Data communication, as a means to integrate data over a network of computers of different vendors, provides data management with the capability of meeting design and manufacturing requirements of the vendors. Geometry software is dependent on developmental success with solid geometry software, which is necessary for continual measurements of, for example, a block of metal while it is being machined. Applications in the aerospace industry, such as for design, analysis, tooling, testing, quality control, etc., are outlined.

The spin vector of Venus determined from Magellan data

A control network of the north polar region of Venus has been established by selecting and measuring control points on full-resolution radar strips. The measurements were incorporated into a least-squares adjustment program that improved initial estimates of the coordinates of the control points, pole direction, and rotation rate of Venus. The current dataset contains 4206 measurements of 606 points on 619 radar strips. The accuracy of the determination is driven by spacecraft ephemeris errors. An accurate estimate of the rotation period of Venus was obtained by applying an ephemeris improvement technique. The second cycle closure orbits improved ephemeris solutions for 40 orbits (376-384, 520-528, 588-592, 658-668, 1002-1010, 1408-1412, 1746-1764, and 2166-2170) are included and fixed in the geodetic control computations, thus trying the network to the J2000 coordinate system.

Revisiting Valley Development on Martian Volcanoes Using MGS and Odyssey Data

The valley networks found on the slopes of Martian volcanoes represent an interesting subset of the Martian valley networks. Not only do the volcanoes constrain the possible geologic settings, they also provide a window into Martian valley development through time, as the volcanoes formed throughout the geologic history of Mars. Here I take another look at this intriguing subset of networks by revisiting conclusions reached in my earlier studies using the Viking imagery and the valleys on Hawaii as an analog. I then examine more recent datasets.

Design of Refractory Metal Heat Pipe Life Test Environment Chamber, Cooling System, and Radio Frequency Heating System

A series of 16 Mo-44.5%Re alloy/sodium heat pipes will be experimentally tested to examine heat pipe aging. To support this evaluation, an environmental test chamber and a number of auxiliary subsystems are required. These subsystems include radio frequency (RF) power supplies/inductive coils, recirculation water coolant loops, and chamber gas conditioning. The heat pipes will be grouped, based on like power and gas mixture requirements, into three clusters of five units each, configured in a pentagonal arrangement. The highest powered heat pipe will be tested separately. Test chamber atmospheric purity is targeted at <0.3 ppb oxygen at an approximate operating pressure of 76 torr (.1.5 psia), maintained by active purification (oxygen level is comparable to a 10(exp -6) torr environment). Treated water will be used in two independent cooling circuits to remove .85 kW. One circuit will service the RF hardware while the other will maintain the heat pipe calorimetry. Initial procedures for the startup and operation of support systems have been identified. Each of these subsystems is outfitted with a variety of instrumentation, integrated with distributed real-time controllers and computers. A local area network provides communication between all devices. This data and control network continuously monitors the health of the test hardware, providing warning indicators followed by automatic shutdown should potentially damaging conditions develop. During hardware construction, a number of checkout tests.many making use of stainless steel prototype heat pipes that are already fabricated.will be required to verify operation.

A Journey with MOM

In late 2013, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) launched its "Mars Orbiter Mission" (MOM). ISRO engaged NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for navigation services to support ISRO's objectives of MOM achieving and maintaining Mars orbit. The navigation support included planning, documentation, testing, orbit determination, maneuver design /analysis, and tracking data analysis. Several of MOM's attributes had an impact on navigation processes, e.g., S -band telecommunications, Earth Orbit Phase maneuvers, and frequent angular momentum desaturation s (AMDs). The primary source of tracking data was NASA/ JPL's Deep Space Network (DSN); JPL also conducted a performance assessment of Indian Deep Space Network (IDSN) tracking data. Planning for the Mars Orbit Insertion (MOI) was complicated by a pressure regulator failure that created uncertainty regarding MOM's main engine and raised potential planetary protection issues. A successful main engine test late on approach resolved these issues; it was quickly followed by a successful MOI on 24-September - 2014 at 02:00 UTC. Less than a month later, Comet Siding Spring's Mars flyby necessitated plans to minimize potential spacecraft damage. At the time of this writing, MOM's orbital operations continue, and plans to extend JPL 's support are in progress. This paper covers the JPL 's support of MOM through the Comet Siding Spring event.
