Mechanochemical Synthesis of Sustainable Ternary and Quaternary Nanostructured Cu2SnS3, Cu2ZnSnS4, and Cu2ZnSnSe4 Chalcogenides for Thermoelectric Applications

Copper-based chalcogenides have emerged as promising thermoelectric materials due to their high thermoelectric performance, tunable transport properties, earth abundance and low toxicity. We have presented an overview of experimental results and first-principal calculations investigating the thermoelectric properties of various polymorphs of Cu2SnS3 (CTS), Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS), and Cu2ZnSnSe4 (CZTSe) synthesized by high-energy reactive mechanical alloying (ball milling). Of particular interest are the disordered polymorphs of these materials, which exhibit phonon-glass–electron-crystal behavior—a decoupling of electron and phonon transport properties. The interplay of cationic disorder and nanostructuring leads to ultra-low thermal conductivities while enhancing electronic transport. These beneficial transport properties are the consequence of a plethora of features, including trap states, anharmonicity, rattling, and conductive surface states, both topologically trivial and non-trivial. Based on experimental results and computational methods, this report aims to elucidate the details of the electronic and lattice transport properties, thereby confirming that the higher thermoelectric (TE) performance of disordered polymorphs is essentially due to their complex crystallographic structures. In addition, we have presented synchrotron X-ray diffraction (SR-XRD) measurements and ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations of the root-mean-square displacement (RMSD) in these materials, confirming anharmonicity and bond inhomogeneity for disordered polymorphs.

From Feynman diagrams to the amplituhedron: a gentle review

In this article we review, for a mathematical audience, the computation of (tree-level) scattering amplitudes in Yang-Mills theory in detail. In particular we demonstrate explicitly how the same formulas for six-particle NMHV helicity amplitudes are obtained from summing Feynman diagrams and from computing the canonical form of the n=6, k=1, m=4 amplituhedron.

Toward the Analytic Bootstrap of Energy Correlators

In this paper, we present a framework for the analytic bootstrap of three-point energy correlators, a crucial observable in N = 4 N=4 super Yang-Mills theory and quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Our approach combines spherical contour techniques, general physical constraints such as pole cancellations, and power correction data in the singular limits to determine its analytic expression. In contrast to previous bootstrap studies restricted to scattering amplitudes for supersymmetric theories, our framework makes use of the properties of Feynman integrals, marking a significant step toward bootstrapping realistic QCD observables. Using this method, we derive analytic expressions for leading-order three-point energy correlators with equal and unequal energy weights, where the latter are crucial ingredients for projected N N-point energy correlators. We also apply the recently developed technique of analytic regression with lattice reduction as a way to bypass needing explicit expressions for the singular limits. Bridging theoretical advances in scattering amplitudes with the renewed interest in weighted cross-sections, our work opens the door to precision tests of QCD dynamics through analytic event-shape predictions.

Oxidation of Alloy X in Subcritical, Transition, and Supercritical Water

This work investigates the oxidation of a nickel-based superalloy, namely Alloy X, in water at elevated temperatures: subcritical water at 261°C and 27 MPa, the transition between subcritical and supercritical water at 374°C and 27 MPa, and supercritical water at 380°C and 27 MPa for 100 h. The morphology of the sample surfaces were studied using scanning electron microscopy coupled with focused ion beam milling, and the surface chemistry was investigated using x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy before and after exposure studies. Surfaces of all samples were identified to comprise of a ferrite spinel containing aluminum.

Intergranular Corrosion of Feedstock Modified—Additively Manufactured Stainless Steel After Sensitization

Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), a metal additive manufacturing technique, was conducted on feedstock-modified 316L stainless steel (316L) powder produced by ball-milling of commercial 316L and 1 wt% additive (cerium oxide—CeO 2 , lanthanum (III) nitrate hexahydrate—La(NO 3 ) 3 ·6H 2 O, and chromium nitride—CrN). The feedstock-modified LPBF-316L specimens were sensitized at 675°C for 24 h, and the influence of additives on intergranular corrosion (IGC) was investigated following ASTM G108-94 and A262-14 standards. The LPBF-316L with La(NO 3 ) 3 ·6H 2 O showed higher IGC resistance. Furthermore, the microstructure of the LPBF specimen was investigated and correlated to understand the improved IGC resistance of LPBF-316L with La(NO 3 ) 3 ·6H 2 O additive.

BSEC ecohydrological and water quality fluxes from RHESSys Simulations in USGS gauged watersheds

Baltimore Environmental Social Collaborative (BSEC) Water and Water Quality Simulations from RHESSys Model The repository contains RHESSys (Tague & Band, 2004; source code) simulated ecohydrological and nutrient (nitrogen only) fluxes at daily, basin-average (RHESSys_basin_output) and monthly, grid (RHESSys_patch_output) levels. We currently simulated the following 8 watersheds in Baltimore: Dead Run Baisman Run Scotts Level Branch Moores Run Powder Mill Run Maidens Choice Run Stony Run The watershed boundaries of all studied watersheds are stored in Watershed_Boundary folder. Variables and their units are listed in the metadata. Spatial projection, NAD83 / UTM zone 18N (EPSG:26918) is used for patch-level, netCDF-format files. Paraglider Recovery Systems

In 1945 it occurred to the writer that if we could discover how to make flexible wings that could be packaged and deployed somewhat like a parachute, such wings would have many new applications as well as replacing some parachutes and rigid wings. Previous uses of flexible materials in aerodynamic surfaces - parachutes, kites, boat sails, and wind mills - were reviewed, and some crude experiments were performed with gliders and kites. Before the end of 1948, the device now generally called a paraglider was evolved and developed sufficiently to merit a patent application. The study was continued privately as time permitted, and in 1954 a short paper on the subject was presented to an audience of about 50 Reserve Air Force officers. This paper was given rather wide distribution, although it suffers from lack of the many kite and glider demonstrations of the original presentation. Little serious interest was shown by the aeronautical community, however, until about a year after Sputnik I. In December 1958 the flexible-wing concept was presented to the Langley Committee on General Aerodynamics with the aid of the hurriedly prepared charts shown in figure 1, faithfully reproduced here for historical purposes.
