Search for new physics in the final state with a single photon and large missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at √𝑠 =13 TeV

A search for new physics in events featuring a single photon and missing transverse momentum is presented, using proton-proton √𝑠 =13 TeV collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 101 fb −1 collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC between 2017 and 2018. This analysis, combined with a previous study of 36 fb −1 of 2016 data (totaling 137 fb −1 ), reveals no significant deviations from standard model expectations. The results are then used to establish 95% confidence level limits on parameters in theoretical models involving dark matter and large extra dimensions. Compared to the 2016-only analysis, this search achieves up to a 14% improvement in exclusion reach for mediator masses in simplified dark matter models, along with 11% and 10% enhancements in the limits on the effective field theory suppression scale and the fundamental Planck scale, respectively. These results are the most stringent constraints on these parameters to date.

First measurement of 𝑎$^{0}_{2}$⁡(1320) polarized photoproduction cross section

We measure for the first time the differential photoproduction cross section dσ/dt of the a 2 (1320) meson at an average photon beam energy of 8.5 GeV, using data with an integrated luminosity of 104 pb −1 collected by the GlueX experiment. We fully reconstruct the γp → ηπ 0 p reaction and perform a partial-wave analysis in the a 2 (1320) mass region with amplitudes that incorporate the linear polarization of the beam. This allows us to separate for the first time the contributions of natural- and unnatural-parity exchanges. Furthermore, these measurements provide novel information about the photoproduction mechanism, which is critical for the search for spin-exotic states.

Measurement of 𝐷 0 Meson Photoproduction in Ultraperipheral Heavy Ion Collisions

This Letter reports the first measurement of photonuclear 𝐷 0 meson production in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions. The study is performed using lead-lead collision data, with an integrated luminosity of 1.34 nb −1 , collected by the CMS experiment at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.36 TeV. Photonuclear events, where one of the colliding nuclei breaks up and the other remains intact, are selected based on breakup neutron emissions and by requiring no particle activity in a large rapidity interval in the direction of the photon-emitting nucleus. The 𝐷 0 mesons are reconstructed via the 𝐷 0 → 𝐾 −⁢ 𝜋 + decay channel, with the cross section measured as a function of 𝐷 0 meson transverse momentum and rapidity. The results are compared with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations that employ recent parametrizations of the lead nuclear parton distribution functions, as well as with predictions based on the color glass condensate framework. This measurement is the first photonuclear collision study characterizing parton distribution functions of lead nuclei for parton fractional momenta 𝑥 (relative to the nucleon) ranging approximately from a few 10 −4 to 10 −2 for different hard energy scale 𝑄 2 selections.

Study of the B - → Λ c + Λ ¯ c - K - decay

The decay B - → $Λ^+_c \overline{Λ}^-_c K^-$ is studied in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5 fb -1 collected by the LHCb experiment. In the $Λ^+_c K^-$ system, the Ξ c (2930) 0 state observed at the BABAR and Belle experiments is resolved into two narrower states, Ξ c (2923) 0 and Ξ c (2939) 0 , whose masses and widths are measured to be m(Ξ c (2923) 0 ) = 2924.5 ± 0.4 ± 1.1 MeV, m(Ξ c (2939) 0 ) = 2938.5 ± 0.9 ± 2.3 MeV, Γ(Ξ c (2923) 0 ) = 4.8 ± 0.9 ± 1.5 MeV, Γ(Ξ c (2939) 0 ) = 11.0 ± 1.9 ± 7.5 MeV, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The results are consistent with a previous LHCb measurement using a prompt $Λ^+_c K^-$ sample. Evidence of a new Ξ c (2880) 0 state is found with a local significance of 3.8σ, whose mass and width are measured to be 2881.8 ± 3.1 ± 8.5 MeV and 12.4 ± 5.3 ± 5.8 MeV, respectively. In addition, evidence of a new decay mode Ξ c (2790) 0 → $Λ^+_c K^-$ is found with a significance of 3.7σ. The relative branching fraction of B - → $Λ^+_c \overline{Λ}^-_c K^-$ with respect to the B - → D + D - K - decay is measured to be 2.36 ± 0.11 0.22 ± 0.25, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third originates from the branching fractions of charm hadron decays.

Search for high-mass resonances in final states with a τ-lepton and missing transverse momentum with the ATLAS detector

A search for high-mass resonances decaying into a τ-lepton and a neutrino using proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ =13 TeV is presented. The full run 2 data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 recorded by the ATLAS experiment in the years 2015–2018 is analyzed. The τ-lepton is reconstructed in its hadronic decay modes and the total transverse momentum carried out by neutrinos is inferred from the reconstructed missing transverse momentum. The search for new physics is performed on the transverse mass between the τ-lepton and the missing transverse momentum. No excess of events above the Standard Model expectation is observed and upper exclusion limits are set on the W' →τ⁢v production cross section. Heavy W' vector bosons with masses up to 5.0 TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level, assuming that they have the same couplings as the Standard Model W boson. For nonuniversal couplings, W' bosons are excluded for masses less than 3.5–5.0 TeV, depending on the model parameters. In addition, model-independent limits on the visible cross section times branching ratio are determined as a function of the lower threshold on the transverse mass of the τ-lepton and missing transverse momentum.

Observation of the B$^0_\mathrm{s}\to $X(3872)$\phi$ decay

Using a data sample of proton-proton collisions at s=13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb-1 collected by the CMS experiment in 2016–2018, the Bs0→X(3872)ϕ decay is observed. Decays into J/ψπ+π− and K+K- are used to reconstruct, respectively, the X(3872) and ϕ. The ratio of the product of branching fractions B[Bs0→X(3872)ϕ]B[X(3872)→J/ψπ+π−] to the product B[Bs0→ψ(2S)ϕ]B[ψ(2S)→J/ψπ+π−] is measured to be [2.21±0.29(stat)±0.17(syst)]%. The ratio B[Bs0→X(3872)ϕ]/B[B0→X(3872)K0] is found to be consistent with one, while the ratio B[Bs0→X(3872)ϕ]/B[B+→X(3872)K+] is two times smaller. This suggests a difference in the production dynamics of the X(3872) in B0 and Bs0 meson decays compared to B+. The reported observation may shed new light on the nature of the X(3872) particle.

Azimuthal Correlations within Exclusive Dijets with Large Momentum Transfer in Photon-Lead Collisions

The structure of nucleons is multidimensional and depends on the transverse momenta, spatial geometry, and polarization of the constituent partons. Such a structure can be studied using high-energy photons produced in ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions. The first measurement of the azimuthal angular correlations of exclusively produced events with two jets in photon-lead interactions at large momentum transfer is presented, a process that is considered to be sensitive to the underlying nuclear gluon polarization. This study uses a data sample of ultraperipheral lead-lead collisions at s NN = 5.02 TeV , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.38 nb - 1 , collected with the CMS experiment at the LHC. The measured second harmonic of the correlation between the sum and difference of the two jet transverse momentum vectors is found to be positive, and rising, as the dijet transverse momentum increases. A well-tuned model that has been successful at describing a wide range of proton scattering data from the HERA experiments fails to describe the observed correlations, suggesting the presence of gluon polarization effects.

Observation of an Excess of Dicharmonium Events in the Four-Muon Final State with the ATLAS Detector

A search is made for potential $cc\bar{c}\bar{c}$ tetraquarks decaying into a pair of charmonium states in the four muon final state using proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$=13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb -1 recorded by the ATLAS experiment at LHC. Two decay channels, $J/ψ+J/ψ→4μ$ and $J/ψ+ψ(2S)→4μ$, are studied. Backgrounds are estimated based on a hybrid approach involving Monte Carlo simulations and data-driven methods. Statistically significant excesses with respect to backgrounds dominated by the single parton scattering are seen in the di-J/ψ channel consistent with a narrow resonance at 6.9 GeV and a broader structure at lower mass. A statistically significant excess is also seen in the $J/ψ+ψ$(2S) channel. The fitted masses and decay widths of the structures are reported.

Measurement of Λ b 0 , Λ c + , and Λ Decay Parameters Using Λ b 0 → Λ c + h − Decays

A comprehensive study of the angular distributions in the bottom-baryon decays Λ b 0 → Λ c + h − ( h = π , K ) , followed by Λ c + → Λ h + with Λ → p π − or Λ c + → p K S 0 decays, is performed using a data sample of proton-proton collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb − 1 collected by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV. The decay parameters and the associated charge-parity ( C P ) asymmetries are measured, with no significant C P violation observed. For the first time, the Λ b 0 → Λ c + h − decay parameters are measured. The most precise measurements of the decay parameters α , β , and γ are obtained for Λ c + decays and an independent measurement of the decay parameters for the strange-baryon Λ decay is provided. The results deepen our understanding of weak decay dynamics in baryon decays. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

First Determination of the Spin-Parity of Ξ c ( 3055 ) + , 0 Baryons

The Ξ b 0 ( − ) → Ξ c ( 3055 ) + ( 0 ) ( → D + ( 0 ) Λ ) π − decay chains are observed, and the spin-parity of Ξ c ( 3055 ) + ( 0 ) baryons is determined for the first time. The measurement is performed using proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of s = 13 TeV , corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb − 1 , recorded by the LHCb experiment between 2016 and 2018. The spin-parity of the Ξ c ( 3055 ) + ( 0 ) baryons is determined to be 3 / 2 + with a significance of more than 6.5 σ ( 3.5 σ ) compared to all other tested hypotheses. The up-down asymmetries of the Ξ b 0 ( − ) → Ξ c ( 3055 ) + ( 0 ) π − transitions are measured to be − 0.92 ± 0.10 ± 0.05 ( − 0.92 ± 0.16 ± 0.22 ), consistent with maximal parity violation, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. These results support the hypothesis that the Ξ c ( 3055 ) + ( 0 ) baryons correspond to the first D -wave λ -mode excitation of the Ξ c flavor triplet. © 2025 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2025 CERN

Search for Higgsinos in final states with low-momentum lepton-track pairs at 13 TeV

We present a search for the pair production of Higgsinos in final states with large missing transverse momentum and either two reconstructed muons or a reconstructed lepton (muon or electron) and an isolated track. The analyzed data correspond to proton-proton collisions with an integrated luminosity of 137 fb −1 , collected by the CMS experiment at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ =13 TeV in 2016, 2017, and 2018. The signal scenario assumes four nearly mass degenerate Higgsino mass eigenstates: two neutralino states $\tilde{𝜒}^0_2$ and $\tilde{𝜒}^0_1$ with a small mass difference in the range 1–10 GeV and two chargino states $\tilde{𝜒}^±_1$ with an intermediate mass. The analysis focuses on the decay of the heavier neutralino into the lighter one and a virtual 𝑍 boson, which decays into two same-flavor leptons. The leptons have small transverse momentum and/or a small opening angle between the identified muons. An isolated track is used to recover events in which only one of the two leptons is identified. Multivariate discriminants are used to enhance the sensitivity by efficiently rejecting backgrounds from SM processes or misreconstructed tracks and/or leptons. The search explores a unique phase space and probes a previously unexplored region of the signal model parameter space. Mass differences between the two neutralinos are probed down to 1.5 GeV, assuming a Higgsino mass of 100 GeV. The maximum excluded Higgsino mass is 115 GeV.

In-Situ Characterization Tools for Evaluating Radiation Tolerance and Elemental Migration in Perovskites

This paper discusses the in-situ characterization tools designed to assess radiation tolerance and elemental migration in perovskite materials. With the increasing use of perovskites in various technological applications, understanding their response to radiation exposure is paramount. Ion Beam Induced Charge (IBIC) emerges as a powerful tool for investigating the radiation tolerance of perovskites at the microscale. By employing focused ion beams, IBIC allows for the spatial mapping of charge carriers, offering insights into the material's electronic response to radiation-induced defects. This technique enables researchers to pinpoint areas of enhanced or suppressed charge collection, providing valuable information on the perovskite's intrinsic properties under irradiation. Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry (RBS) complements the study by offering a quantitative analysis of elemental migration in perovskite materials. Through the precise measurement of backscattered ions, RBS provides a detailed understanding of the elemental composition and distribution within the perovskite lattice after radiation exposure. The integration of IBIC and RBS techniques in in-situ experiments enhances the comprehensive characterization of radiation effects on perovskites.

Diagnostics for Burning Plasmas

Here, recent progress in the design and manufacturing development of in-vessel diagnostic components by the U.S. ITER team is reported. Design and manufacturing choices are driven by engineering challenges stemming from ITER’s burning plasma mission, which entails levels of plasma neutron emission, pulse lengths, and size scales well beyond the existing database. Challenges include port access limitations, neutron irradiation and activation risks, nuclear heating of components, complex interfaces, remote handling compatibility, and constraints on component and processing materials. Responses to these challenges are presented using examples from the low field side reflectometer, toroidal interferometer polarimeter, and electron cyclotron emission diagnostics. Relevance of the experience from ITER diagnostics engineering to the design of future integrated fusion facilities based on burning plasmas is addressed.

A Stochastic Reduced-Order Model for Statistical Microstructure Descriptors Evolution

Integrated computational materials engineering (ICME) models have been a crucial building block for modern materials development, relieving heavy reliance on experiments and significantly accelerating the materials design process. However, ICME models are also computationally expensive, particularly with respect to time integration for dynamics, which hinders the ability to study statistical ensembles and thermodynamic properties of large systems for long time scales. To alleviate the computational bottleneck, we propose to model the evolution of statistical microstructure descriptors as a continuous-time stochastic process using a non-linear Langevin equation, where the probability density function (PDF) of the statistical microstructure descriptors, which are also the quantities of interests (QoIs), is modeled by the Fokker–Planck equation. In this work, we discuss how to calibrate the drift and diffusion terms of the Fokker–Planck equation from the theoretical and computational perspectives. The calibrated Fokker–Planck equation can be used as a stochastic reduced-order model to simulate the microstructure evolution of statistical microstructure descriptors PDF. Considering statistical microstructure descriptors in the microstructure evolution as QoIs, we demonstrate our proposed methodology in three integrated computational materials engineering (ICME) models: kinetic Monte Carlo, phase field, and molecular dynamics simulations.

Observation of B$^0$$\to$$\psi$(2S)K$^0_\mathrm{S}\pi^+\pi^-$ and B$^0_\mathrm{S}$$\to$$\psi$(2S)K$^0_\mathrm{S}$ decays

Measurement of the CKM angle $\gamma $ in the ${{{B} ^0} \rightarrow {D} {{K} ^{*0}}}$ channel using self-conjugate ${D} \rightarrow {{K} ^0_{\textrm{S}}} h^+ h^-$ decays

Observables related to $C\!P$ violation are measured and the angle $\gamma$ is determined to be $\gamma =(49^{+ 22}_{-19})^\circ$. Measurements of the amplitude ratio and strong-phase difference between the favoured and suppressed ${B} ^0$ decays are also presented.

A Design of Activity-Based Mobility Intervention

Human mobility influences our society and vice versa. During the COVID-19 pandemic, non-pharmaceutical intervention that alters activity-based mobility such as work-from-home greatly impacted human mobility patterns. Many studies on developing mitigation strategies have employed or implemented their own mobility intervention within their model assumption. For fair evaluation between intervention strategies across models, it is significant to set up compatible experimental environments. However, it is difficult to apply the identical intervention to different kinds of models and compare their effectiveness because each model might have different assumptions, capabilities, and implementations. Even if one can apply intervention to heterogeneous models, it may produce undesirable artifacts due to difference of models and integration with intervention. Therefore, minimizing undesirable artifacts and facilitating intervention experiments across heterogeneous models are substantial. Taking this into account, this paper investigates a design of activity-based mobility intervention (ABMI). We define ABMI together with related concepts and develop an extensible data model and schema of ABMI based on the 5W1H method that can be used in different models. As a case study, we apply the ABMI model to a micro-simulation to demonstrate the usability of the proposed model. We expect that standardized ABMI and interfaces may help to streamline development and experiments of intervention strategies across heterogeneous models.
