A hybrid robust-stochastic optimization approach for day-ahead scheduling of cascaded hydroelectric system in restructured electricity market

Uncertainties arising from complicated natural and market environments pose great challenges for the efficient operation of cascaded hydroelectric systems. To overcome these challenges, this paper studies the day-ahead scheduling of cascaded hydroelectric systems in a restructured electricity market with the presence of uncertainties in electricity price and natural water inflow. To properly model the uncertainty, we consider the unique characteristics of these two types of uncertainties and capture them via the uncertainty set and stochastic scenarios, respectively. Further, a hybrid robust-stochastic optimization model is developed to simultaneously hedge against these two types of uncertainties, which is formulated as a large-scale non-convex optimization problem with mixed integer recourse. After introducing linearization of nonlinear terms, a tailored hybrid decomposition scheme combining Lagrangian relaxation and Dantzig-Wolfe decomposition is adopted to achieve efficient computation of the proposed model. Two real-world cases are conducted to demonstrate the capability and characteristics of the proposed model and algorithms.

Market participation strategy of hybrid energy resources: A New York ISO case study

Drawing on existing market designs with independent resource participation in electricity markets, this study analyzes participation models for hybrid resources combining renewable generation and storage. Two models are considered: in the first, the components operate independently, with the Independent System Operator (ISO) managing the storage state of charge (SoC); in the second, the hybrid resource acts as an integrated unit, submitting offers as a “black box” and managing its SoC internally. Using a production cost model for the zonal New York Bulk Power System, we evaluate trade-offs in system reliability, market efficiency, and asset profitability. Our results provide several key insights for policymakers, showing that the ISO-managed granular model enhances social welfare through explicit SoC management, while the simpler integrated model is more computationally efficient, but may cause more real-time violations and lower overall profits.

Processing aluminum alloy with hybrid wire arc additive manufacturing and ultrasonic nanocrystalline surface modification to improve porosity, surface finish, and hardness

Here, in this paper, a novel hybrid wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) and ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification (UNSM) on porosity manipulation and surface properties of aluminum 5356 alloys was studied. The goal is to improve the quality of the WAAM-built part by eliminating bigger pores and reducing its size, reducing surface roughness, and increasing surface hardness. The as-built WAAM and WAAM-UNSM-treated samples were quantitatively studied for porosity using an X-ray micro-computed tomography (μ-CT). The surface roughness was measured on the surface profile of the same samples before and after UNSM treatment. Followed by the Vickers micro-hardness tests to evaluate the hardness modified by the influence of the UNSM treatment. It was found that the bigger pores in the as-built WAAM samples were eliminated and the medium-sized pores were shrunk to almost half the size after the UNSM treatment. Further, the UNSM treatment showed a significant improvement in both surface roughness and hardness on the WAAM Al5356 samples. This experimental work demonstrates the critical advantages of hybrid WAAM-UNSM in improving the qualities of the WAAM processed parts.

Solution-processable copper(I) iodide-based inorganic-organic hybrid semiconductors composed of both coordinate and ionic bonds

Three new one-dimensional (1D) All-In-One (AIO) type CuI-based hybrid semiconductors with both dative and ionic bonds between the inorganic and organic components have been successfully designed and synthesized by using the ligands containing both cationic center and coordination available sites. Structural analysis confirms that all compounds share the same formula of Cu 4 I 6 (L) 2 (L = ligand) and are composed of 1D-Cu 4 I 6 2- anionic chains that coordinate to cationic ligands. Additionally, these materials demonstrate high stability towards heat and moisture and excellent solution processability due to their unique bonding nature. They emit low energy light ranging from green to orange color (530-590 nm). The origin and mechanism of their emissions were studied by both experimental and theoretical methods. More importantly, all compounds can be easily fabricated into films by solution process, a desired but rare feature for most of CuI-based hybrids built of extended networks.

A hybrid chemical-biological approach can upcycle mixed plastic waste with reduced cost and carbon footprint

Derived from renewable feedstocks, such as biomass, polylactic acid (PLA) is considered a more environmentally friendly plastic than conventional petroleum-based polyethylene terephthalate (PET). However, PLA must still be recycled, and its growing popularity and mixture with PET plastics at the disposal stage poses a cross-contamination threat in existing recycling facilities and results in low-value and low-quality recycled products. Hybrid upcycling has been proposed as a promising sustainable solution for mixed plastic waste, but its techno-economic and life cycle environmental performance remain understudied. We propose a hybrid upcycling approach using a biocompatible ionic liquid (IL) to first chemically depolymerize plastics and then convert the depolymerized stream via biological upgrading with no extra separation. Here we show that over 95% of mixed PET/PLA was depolymerized into the respective monomers, which then served as the sole carbon source for the growth of Pseudomonas putida, enabling the conversion of the depolymerized plastics into biodegradable polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs). In comparison to conventional commercial PHAs, the estimated optimal production cost and carbon footprint are reduced by 62% and 29%, respectively.

Re-directing mixed-feed deconstruction products to hybrid polyesters: Tolerance windows for commodity plastics reconstruction

Solvolysis is a promising strategy for mixed-feed polyester recycling, but little attention has been given to downstream product separations or the impact of using imperfectly separated monomer mixtures in recycled polymer reconstruction. Here, we challenge the traditional need for high-purity monomers in polycondensation synthesis of engineering thermoplastics. Monomer mixtures are derived from catalyzed methanolysis of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), and polybutylene adipate-co-terephthalate (PBAT), with separation scenarios ranging from high (99:1) to low (90:10) purity. We focus on challenging-to-separate products like ethylene glycol and 1,4-butanediol and evaluate tolerance for comonomer incorporation in recycled hybrid polyesters: polybutylene-co-ethylene terephthalate (PBET) and polybutylene ethylene adipate-co-terephthalate (PBEAT). Evaluations are made between “contaminant” monomer incorporation, and the resulting materials’ thermal properties, crystalline structure, tensile toughness, and rheology. Ultimately, we highlight that despite incorporation of contaminant monomer, high-performance hybrid polyesters of PET, PBT, and PBAT are obtained while reducing the strain of high-throughput separations.

Hybrid biological-chemical strategy for converting polyethylene into a recyclable plastic monomer using engineered Corynebacterium glutamicum

Converting polyethylene (PE) into valuable materials, particularly ones that are better for the environment than the incumbent plastics, not only helps mitigate environmental issues caused by plastic waste but also alleviates the long-standing problem of microbial fermentation competing with food supplies. However, the inherent robustness of PE due to its strong carbon-carbon bonds and high molecular weight necessitates harsh decomposition conditions, resulting in diverse decomposition outcomes that present significant challenges for downstream applications, especially for bioconversion. In this study, we demonstrate a hybrid biological-chemical conversion process for PE, converting its decomposition products, namely short-chain diacids, into a monomer, β-keto-δ-lactone (BKDL), for highly recyclable polydiketoenimine plastics using engineered Corynebacterium glutamicum. Since BKDL synthesis requires a substantial supply of malonyl-CoA, we employed an alternative biosynthesis pathway that leverages C. glutamicum's natural proficiency in amino acid production. We optimized this pathway in vivo by minimizing carbon loss to CO2 and byproducts, improving the transporter system, and maximizing co-factor regeneration. Furthermore, we co-optimized the PE deconstruction process to produce predominantly C4 to C6 diacids and integrated three catabolic pathways into the engineered strain to enhance diacid utilization, maximizing the carbon conversion from PE. Finally, an engineered polyketide synthase was introduced into C. glutamicum to enable BKDL synthesis. This work demonstrates the potential of a chemo-biological hybrid strategy for recycling plastic waste, highlighting its promise in addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainable materials.

Dual-solver hybrid computational approaches for design and analysis of vertical lift vehicles

Abstract The cost of Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes simulations can be restrictive to implement in aeromechanics design and analysis of vertical lift configurations given the cost to resolve the flow on a mesh sufficient to provide accurate aerodynamic and structural loads. Dual-solver hybrid methods have been developed that resolve the configuration and the near field with the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes solvers, while the wake is resolved with vorticity-preserving methods that are more cost-effective. These dual-solver approaches can be integrated into an organisation’s workflow to bridge the gap between lower-fidelity methods and the expensive Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes when there are complex physics present. This paper provides an overview of different dual-solver hybrid methods, coupling approaches, and future efforts to expand their capabilities in the areas of novel configurations and operations in constrained and turbulent environments.

Lower hybrid current drive in a tokamak for correlated passes through resonance

Standard quasilinear descriptions are based on the constant magnetic field form of the quasilinear operator so improperly treat the trapped electron modifications associated with tokamak geometry. Moreover, successive poloidal transits of the Landau resonance during lower hybrid current drive in a tokamak are well correlated, and these geometrical details must be properly retained to account for the presence of trapped electrons that do not contribute to the driven current. The recently derived quasilinear operator in tokamak geometry accounts for these features and finds that the quasilinear diffusivity is proportional to a delta function with a transit or bounce averaged argument (rather than a local Landau resonance condition). The new quasilinear operator is combined with the Cordey ( Nucl. Fusion , vol. 16, 1976, pp. 499–507) eigenfunctions to properly derive a rather simple and compact analytic expression for the trapped electron modifications to the driven lower hybrid current and the efficiency of the current drive.

Two-Dimensional Copper Iodide-Based Inorganic–Organic Hybrid Semiconductors: Synthesis, Structures, and Optical and Transport Properties

A group of copper iodide-based hybrid semiconductors with the general formula of 2D-CuI(L) 0.5 (L = organic ligands) are synthesized and structurally characterized. All compounds are two-dimensional (2D) networks made of one-dimensional (1D) copper iodide staircase chains that are interconnected by bidentate nitrogen-containing ligands. Results from optical absorption and emission experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that their photoluminescence (PL) can be systematically tuned by adjusting the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energies of the organic ligands. Charge carrier transport measurements were carried out for the first time on single crystals of selected 2D-CuI(L) 0.5 structures, and the results show that they possess p-type conductivity with a Hall mobility of ~1 cm 2 V -1 s -1 for 2D-CuI(pm) 0.5 and 0.13 cm 2 V -1 s -1 for 2D-CuI(pz) 0.5 , respectively. These values are comparable to or higher than the mobilities of typical highly luminescent organic semiconductors. Finally, this work suggests that robust, high-dimensional copper iodide hybrid semiconductors are promising candidates to be considered as a new type of emissive layer for light-emitting diode (LED) devices.

Hydrogen Storage Performance of Preferentially Oriented Mg/rGO Hybrids

Chemical interactions on the surface of a functional nanoparticle are closely related to its crystal facets, which can regulate the corresponding energy storage properties like hydrogen absorption. In this study, we reported a one-step growth of magnesium (Mg) particles with both close- and nonclose-packed facets, that is, {0001} and {$2\overline{116}$} planes, on atomically thin reduced graphene oxide (rGO). The detailed microstructures of Mg/rGO hybrids were revealed by X-ray diffraction, selected-area electron diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and fast Fourier transform analysis. Hydrogen storage performance of Mg/rGO hybrids with different orientations varies: Mg with preferential high-index {$2\overline{116}$} crystal surface shows remarkably increased hydrogen absorption up to 6.2 wt % compared with the system exposing no preferentially oriented crystal surfaces showing inferior performance of 5.1 wt % within the first 2 h. First-principles calculations revealed improved hydrogen sorption properties on the {$2\overline{116}$} surface with a lower hydrogen dissociation energy barrier and higher stability of hydrogen atoms than those on the {0001} basal plane, supporting the hydrogen uptake experiment. In addition, the hydrogen penetration energy barrier is found to be much lower than that of {0001} because of low surface atom packing density, which might be the most critical process to the hydrogenation kinetics. Here, the experimental and calculation results present a new handle for regulating the hydrogen storage of metal hydrides by controlled Mg facets.

Novel 3D Cubic Topology in Hybrid Lead Halides with a Symmetric Aromatic Triammonium Exhibiting Water Stability

The limitations of three-dimensional (3D) perovskites are related to their narrow structural tunability of the organic cations and their moisture sensitivity. Herein, we report a new family of 3D cubic hybrid metal halides (T-Et 6 ) 3 Pb 11 X 31 (X = I, Br), where T is 1,3,5-tris-(4-aminophenyl)benzene. The materials are synthesized through an in situ N-alkylation of T and an efficient one-step solvothermal reaction containing ethanol, initiating a tunable synthetic avenue for the acquisition of structurally complex hybrid halides with luminophores. (T-Et 6 ) 3 Pb 11 X 31 consist of an unprecedented Ia3̅ framework of [Pb 11 X 31 ] 9– one-dimensional (1D) chains embedded with (T-Et 6 ) 3+ cations, affording an overall 3D topology. Here, the constituent [Pb 11 X 31 ] 9– chains include exclusively octahedral lead halide units with clusters of face- and edge-sharing connectivity, giving rise to weak broad emission centered at ~660 nm observed at 78 K. (T-Et 6 ) 3 Pb 11 I 31 demonstrates water stability for at least 7 days. Synthesis through ambient pressure results in tunable structural variations of zero-dimensional (0D) structures rendering T 7 Pb 3 Br 27 ·DMF and T 2 Sn 3 Br 18 ·4H 2 O·0.5Br 2 , both of which feature blue PL emission at room temperature.

Impact of Chiral Symmetry Breaking on Spin-Texture and Lone Pair Expression in Chiral Crystals of Hybrid Antimony and Bismuth Halides

Chiral organic building blocks can be incorporated into hybrid organic-inorganic metal-halide crystalline semiconductors so as to control and impact the interconversion between light, charge, and spin. Here, we report a series of hybrid antimony and bismuth halide materials of the general formula MBA 4 B 2 X 10 (B = Sb 3+ , Bi 3+ ; X = Br - , I - ) and study how chiral symmetry breaking imposed by the templating organic chiral methylbenzylammonium (MBA) cations induces symmetry breaking within the inorganic sublattice and leads to a unique spin-texture. The chiral MBA cations introduce two structural modifications to the metal-halide sublattice that consists of isolated edge-sharing dimers of B 2 X 10 octahedra: (1) the dimers have a chiral spatial arrangement with respect to one another and (2) there is an asymmetric distortion of the two subunits within the individual dimers with a higher distortion caused by strong stereochemical activity of the Sb 5s 2 lone pair electrons. The structural distortions and chiral arrangement result in circular dichroism (CD) at the band edge of the inorganic framework with dissymmetry factors in the range of 10 -4 . Chiral spin-splitting of the inorganic states, caused by breaking of the inversion symmetry and large spin-orbit coupling, is studied via density functional theory (DFT), and a multiband effective mass theory was developed that links the DFT-derived spin-splitting of helical character (i.e., spin expectation value not perpendicular to the crystal momentum) to the observed CD. Furthermore, we also find broad red photoluminescence from the MBA 4 Sb 2 Br 10 compounds, which we attribute to self-trapped excitonic emission driven by the large distortion due to the lone pair expression.

Mechanism of Vapor-Phase Infiltration of Organometallic Hf in Poly(Methyl Methacrylate) for Hybrid Resist Applications

Inorganic–organic hybrid thin films synthesized by vapor-phase infiltration (VPI) of metal oxides into organic photoresists, such as poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), have recently demonstrated their utility in extreme ultraviolet lithography, critical for angstrom-era semiconductor device miniaturization. Hafnium oxide infiltration has been reported recently for this purpose, but its detailed VPI mechanism has remained largely unexplored. In this study, we investigated the VPI characteristics and mechanisms of tetrakis(dimethylamido)hafnium (TDMAHf)─the hafnium precursor predominantly used for VPI in the field─into PMMA and examined its impact on electron-beam lithography (EBL) exposure behavior. VPI was performed at temperatures ranging from 85 to 150 °C, with chemical interactions characterized using infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy, and resist patterning performance was evaluated through EBL dose-sensitivity assessments. The results indicate that TDMAHf forms a reversible adduct with PMMA at temperatures up to 120 °C, whereas at 150 °C, covalent bond formation occurs, most likely via dealkylation that leads to acetate formation. EBL studies reveal that resist sensitivity is influenced by both infiltration temperature and developer selection, with aqueous isopropyl alcohol development demonstrating enhanced sensitivity compared to organic solvent-based development. The optimized infiltration protocol at 120 °C ensures a uniform inorganic distribution without compromising resist dissolution. These findings not only help refine hybrid resist patterning performance but also offer insights potentially applicable to the VPI of other homoleptic metal-amide organometallic VPI precursors that include TDMA ligands.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Biological Activity of Hybrid Thiosemicarbazone–Alkylthiocarbamate Metal Complexes

A series of hybrid ligands (H 2 L 1 –H 2 L 3 ) derived from 4-methyl-3-thiosemicarbazide and hydrazinecarbothioic acid O-alkyl esters were synthesized and characterized by NMR. The ligands were chelated with copper (4–6), nickel (7–9), and zinc (10–12) and characterized by spectroscopy, electrochemistry, and single crystal X-ray crystallography. The chelated metals displayed substantial anodic shifts in the Cu II/I reduction potential of ~160 mV relative to their bis(thiosemicarbazone) analogues. The metal chelates 4–12 were evaluated for potential anticancer activity by MTT assays, and selected results were confirmed by clonogenic and trypan blue assays. The copper derivatives 4 and 6 were found to have potent and cancer-selective antiproliferative effects, with GI 50 values less than 100 nM in A549 lung adenocarcinoma cells compared with at least 20-fold less activity in IMR90 nonmalignant lung fibroblasts. In comparison, the nickel complexes were much less active and had little cancer-selectivity. Varying by ligand, the zinc complexes were less potent or had comparable activity compared to that of the corresponding copper complex. UV–visible spectroscopy indicated that zinc complex 10 was transmetalated in the presence of equimolar copper, whereas nickel complex 7 was not. Copper complexes 4 and 6 were also assessed in the NCI60 screen and were found to have cytotoxic activity against most solid tumor cell lines. In MTT assays, 4 and 6 were substantially more active against A549 cancer cells than Cu(ATSM) and were more cancer-selective (for A549 compared to IMR-90) than Cu(GTSM). Finally, our results suggest that hybrid thiosemicarbazone–alkylthiocarbamate copper complexes have potential for development as new anticancer agents.

Rare Earth Nitrate Hybrid Double Perovskites [Me 4 N] 2 [MLn(NO 3 ) 6 ] (M = Na–Cs; Ln = La–Gd, ex. Pm)

An exploration of the synthetic and structural phase space of rare earth hybrid double perovskites A 2 B'BX 6 (A = organocation, B' = M + , B = M 3+ , X = molecular bridging anion) that include X = NO 3 – and B' = alkali metal is reported, complementing earlier studies of the [Me 4 N] 2 [KB(NO 3 ) 6 ] (B = Am, Cm, La–Nd, Sm–Lu, Y) (Me 4 N = (CH 3 ) 4 N + ) compounds. In the present efforts, the synthetic phase space of these systems is explored by varying the identity of the alkali metal ion at the B'-site. Herein, we report three new series of the form [Me 4 N] 2 [B'B(NO 3 ) 6 ] (B = La–Nd, Sm–Gd; B' = Na, Rb, Cs). The early members of the Na-series crystallize in the trigonal space group R3̅ from La to Nd where a phase transition occurs in the phase between 273 and 300 K, going from R3̅ to the high-symmetry, cubic space group Fm3̅m. The preceding trigonal members of the Na-series also undergo phase transitions to cubic symmetry at temperatures above 300 K, establishing a decreasing trend in the phase-transition temperature. The remainder of the Na-series, as well as the Rb- and Cs-series, all crystallize in Fm3̅m at 300 K. The temperature-dependent phase behavior of the synthesized phases is studied via variable-temperature spectroscopic methods and high-resolution powder X-ray diffractometry. All phases were characterized via single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and Raman spectroscopic methods. These results demonstrate the versatility of the perovskite structure type to include rare earth ions, nitrate ions, and a suite of alkali metal ions and serve as a foundation for the design of functional rare earth hybrid double perovskite materials such as those possessing useful multiferroic, optical, and magnetic properties.

Structural Diversity and Tunable Emission in Hybrid Organic–Inorganic Copper(I) Bromides

Recently, hybrid organic−inorganic copper(I) metal halides have attracted global attention due to their intriguing optical properties and low-cost solution processability. In this work, we report three hybrid organic−inorganic copper(I) bromides, [TMPA] 2 [Cu 2 Br 4 ], [TMPA] 4 [Cu 6 Br 10 ], and [TMPA] 2 [Cu 4 Br 6 ], synthesized through a slow evaporation method using trimethylphenylammonium (TMPA + ) as the organic cation. By precise control of the CuBr and TMPABr precursors, different copper halide [Cu 2 Br 4 ] 2− , [Cu 6 Br 10 ] 4− , and [Cu 4 Br 6 ] 2− structural units can be obtained. [TMPA] 2 [Cu 2 Br 4 ], [TMPA] 4 [Cu 6 Br 10 ], and [TMPA] 2 [Cu 4 Br 6 ] demonstrate distinct blue, orange, and greenish-yellow light emission, respectively. The first two compounds have zero-dimensional (0D) crystal structures in centrosymmetric triclinic space group P-1 and monoclinic space group P2 1 /n. In contrast, [TMPA] 2 [Cu 4 Br 6 ] features a unique one-dimensional (1D) structure and crystallizes in the centrosymmetric monoclinic space group P2 1 /c. Consequently, the observed greenish-yellow emission of [TMPA] 2 [Cu 4 Br 6 ] is also unique, in contrast to the typical orange-red emission of 0D [Cu 4 Br 6 ]-based compounds. This work provides insights into the design of copper halide light emitters and emphasizes the influence of structural dimensionality on photoluminescence. The tunable optical properties suggest the potential of these materials for multicolor photopatterning, information encryption, and anticounterfeiting applications.

Iodine Close Packing in Hybrid Halide Bismuth(III) and Antimony(III) Semiconductors: (NH 3 (CH 2 ) 7 NH 3 ) 2 Bi 2 I 10 and (NH 3 (CH 2 ) 7 NH 3 ) 2 Sb 2 I 10

Simple features in complex hybrid inorganic–organic crystalline materials provide opportunities for targeted discovery of materials with desired optoelectronic properties. In this study, we report the structure and optoelectronic properties of isostructural (NH 3 (CH 2 ) 7 NH 3 ) 2 Bi 2 I 10 and (NH 3 (CH 2 ) 7 NH 3 ) 2 Sb 2 I 10 . The crystal structures are characterized by corner-connected metal-iodide octahedral chains that form a cubic close-packed iodine inorganic framework. Variable temperature UV–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy reveals stark contrasts in the onset of absorption and color changes between the [MX6]3– based structures, due to differences in the interaction of the (NH 3 (CH 2 ) 7 NH 3 ) 2+ organic ammonium cation and the iodine packing of the inorganic framework. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal flat bands reflective of the pseudo-1D crystal structure. Dark microwave conductivity (DMC) and time-resolved microwave conductivity (TRMC) reveal an excitonic character with long carrier lifetimes, consistent with the electronically confined octahedral chains. Comparison of the structural features with those of other diammonium-containing crystals reveals that diammoniumheptane can substitute into structures, displacing inorganic octahedra while retaining a close-packed anion framework. This provides a means for targeting new hybrid materials in which “vacancy-ordering” provides a crystal chemical approach for targeting desirable optoelectronic properties.
