Probing Quantum Anomalous Hall States in Twisted Bilayer WSe 2 via Attractive Polaron Spectroscopy

Moiré superlattices in semiconductors exhibit a rich variety of interaction-induced topological states, including quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effects. A recent study hinted that twisted WSe 2 homobilayer (tWSe 2 ) could host a QAH state but lacked direct evidence of ferromagnetism, a key hallmark of this phase. Here, we report the first direct evidence of QAH states in tWSe 2 with spontaneous ferromagnetism. Specifically, we employ polarization-resolved attractive polaron spectroscopy on a dual-gated, 2° tWSe 2 and observe direct signatures of spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking at hole filling 𝜈 = 1. Together with a Chern number (𝐶) measurement via Streda formula analysis, we identify this magnetized state as a topological state, characterized by 𝐶 = 1. Furthermore, we demonstrate that these topological and magnetic properties are tunable via a finite displacement field, between a QAH ferromagnetic state and an antiferromagnetic state. Our findings position tWSe 2 as a highly versatile, stable, and optically addressable platform for investigating topological order and strong correlations in two-dimensional landscapes.

Generalized Hall conductivities in local commuting projector models: Generalized symmetries and protected surface modes

Hall conductivities are important characterizations of phases of matter. It is known that nonzero Hall conductivities are difficult to realize in local commuting projector lattice models due to no-go theorems in (2+1)⁢D. In this work we construct local commuting projector models in (2+1)⁢D and (3+1)⁢D with nonzero generalized Hall conductivities for ordinary and higher-form continuous symmetries on tensor product Hilbert space of finite local dimension. The model is given by a standard ℤ 𝑁 toric code, but the symmetries do not admit expression in terms of on-site charge operators. The symmetry do not have local charges or currents on the lattice in the absence of boundaries, but there is still a notion of Hall conductivities that coincide with the continuum field theories. We construct protected gapless boundaries of the lattice models using modified Villain formalism. The generalized Hall conductivities are computed by surface currents as well as bulk flux insertion and many-body Chern number.

Resistivity anisotropy of quantum Hall stripe phases

In this work, quantum Hall stripe phases near half-integer filling factors $\nu$ $\geqslant$ 9/2 were predicted by Hartree-Fock (HF) theory and confirmed by discoveries of giant resistance anisotropies in high-mobility two dimensional electron gases. A theory of such anisotropy was proposed by MacDonald and Fisher, although they used parameters whose dependencies on the filling factor, electron density, and mobility remained unspecified. Here, we fill this void by calculating the hard-to-easy resistivity ratio as a function of these three variables. Quantitative comparison with experiment yields very good agreement, which we view as evidence for the “plain vanilla” smectic stripe HF phases

Thermal Hall conductance and a relative topological invariant of gapped two-dimensional systems

We derive a Kubo-like formula for the thermal Hall conductance of a 2d lattice systems which is free from ambiguities associated with the definition of energy magnetization. We use it to define a relative topological invariant of gapped 2d lattice systems at zero temperature. Up to a numerical factor, it can be identified with the difference of chiral central charges for the corresponding edge modes. This establishes the bulk-boundary correspondence for the chiral central charge. Here, we also show that for any local commuting projector Hamiltonian, the relative chiral central charge vanishes, while for free fermionic systems, it is related to the zero-temperature electric Hall conductance via the Wiedemann-Franz law.

Theoretical phase diagram of two-component composite fermions in double-layer graphene

Theory predicts that double layer systems realize “two-component composite fermions,” which are formed when electrons capture both intra- and inter-layer vortices, to produce a wide variety of new strongly correlated liquid and crystal states as a function of the layer separation. Recent experiments in double layer graphene have revealed a large number of layer-correlated fractional quantum Hall states in the lowest Landau level, many of which have not been studied quantitatively in previous theoretical works. We consider the competition between various liquid and crystal states at several of these filling factors (specifically, the states at total filling factors ν = 3/7, 4/9, 6/11, 4/7, 3/5, 2/3, and 4/5) to determine the theoretical phase diagram as a function of the layer separation. We compare our results with experiments and identify various observed states. In particular, we show that at small layer separations the states at total fillings ν = 3/7 and ν = 3/5 are partially pseudospin polarized, where pseudospin refers to the layer index. For certain fractions, such as ν = 3/7, interlayer correlations are predicted to survive to surprisingly large interlayer separations.

Hall viscosity of the composite-fermion Fermi seas for fermions and bosons

The Hall viscosity has been proposed as a topological property of incompressible fractional quantum Hall states and can be evaluated as Berry curvature. This paper reports on the Hall viscosities of composite-fermion Fermi seas at ν = 1/m, where m is even for fermions and odd for bosons. A well-defined value for the Hall viscosity is not obtained by viewing the 1/m composite-fermion Fermi seas as the n → ∞ limit of the Jain ν = n/(nm ± 1) states, whose Hall viscosities (±n + m)ℏρ/4 (ρ is the two-dimensional density) approach ±∞ in the limit n → ∞. A direct calculation shows that the Hall viscosities of the composite-fermion Fermi sea states are finite and also relatively stable with system size variation, although they are not topologically quantized in the entire τ space. Here, I find that the ν = 1/2 composite-fermion Fermi sea wave function for a square torus yields a Hall viscosity that is expected from particle-hole symmetry and is also consistent with the orbital spin of 1/2 for Dirac composite fermions. I compare my numerical results with some theoretical conjectures.

Crystal orientation dependence of interfacial magnetic anisotropy at heavy-metal/magnetic-garnet interfaces

Ferrimagnetic insulators capped with a heavy metal are becoming an increasingly interesting materials system in spintronics due to their unique ability for electrical manipulation and detection of magnetic states and spin textures via spin-orbit torques. The ability to engineer magnetic anisotropy is a powerful tool for tuning the recently discovered phenomena in these bilayers such as electrical switching or the stabilization of topological magnetic textures. Here, we observe large shifts in the magnetic anisotropy in Tm 3 Fe 5 O 13 and Y 3 Fe 5 O 12 thin films due to heavy-metal capping layers, which strongly depends on the orientation of the substrate and therefore the orientation of the epitaxial films. This work suggests large Rashba spin-orbit coupling at the metal/ferrimagneticinsulator interface, which can be engineered in spintronic devices that utilize spin-orbit torques for electrical control of the magnetization in magnetic insulators.

Partial equilibration of anti-Pfaffian edge modes at ν = 5 / 2

The thermal Hall conductance K of the fractional quantum Hall state at filling fraction ν = 5/2 has recently been measured to be K = 2.5π 2 $k$$^{2}_{B}$T/3h [M. Banerjee et al. Nature (London) 559, 205 (2018)]. Here, the half-integer value of this result (in units of π 2 $k$$^{2}_{B}$T/3h) provides strong evidence for the presence of a Majorana edge mode and a corresponding quantum Hall state hosting quasiparticles with non-Abelian statistics. Whether this measurement points to the realization of the PH-Pfaffian or the anti-Pfaffian state has been the subject of debate. Here we consider the implications of this measurement for anti-Pfaffian edge-state transport. We show that in the limit of strong Coulomb interaction and an approximate spin degeneracy in the lowest Landau level, the anti-Pfaffian state admits low-temperature edge phases that are consistent with the Hall conductance measurements. Furthermore, these edge phases can exhibit fully equilibrated electrical transport coexisting with partially equilibrated heat transport over a range of temperatures. Through a study of the kinetic equations describing low-temperature electrical and heat transport of these edge states, we determine regimes of parameter space, controlling the interactions between the different edge modes that agree with experiment.

Thermodynamics of energy magnetization

We construct the thermodynamics of energy magnetization in the presence of gravitomagnetic field. We show that the free energy must be modified to account for the modification of the energy current operator in the presence of a confining potential. The explicit expression of the energy magnetization is derived for a periodic system, and the Streda formula for the thermal Hall conductivity is rigorously established. Furthermore, we demonstrate our theory of the energy magnetization and the Streda formula in a Chern insulator.

Microscopic diagnosis of universal geometric responses in fractional quantum Hall liquids

Topological quantum liquids contain internal degrees of freedom that are coupled to geometric response. Yet, an explicit and microscopic identification of the geometric response remains difficult. Here, taking notable fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states as typical examples, we systematically investigate a promising protocol—the Dehn-twist deformation on the torus geometry—to probe the geometric response of correlated topological states and establish the relation between such response and universal properties of pertinent states. Based on analytical derivations and numerical simulations, we find that the geometry-induced Berry phase encodes features for a broad class of FQH states at the Laughlin, hierarchy, Halperin and non-Abelian Moore-Read fillings. Our findings conclusively demonstrate that the adiabatic Dehn-twist deformation can faithfully capture rich geometric and topological information, including the Hall viscosity and topological spin of the pertinent FQH state and the chiral central charge of the underlying edge conformal field theory. Our approach provides a powerful way to reveal topological orders of generic FQH states and address previously open questions.

Mirror symmetry breaking and lateral stacking shifts in twisted trilayer graphene

Here, we construct a continuum model of twisted trilayer graphene using ab initio density-functional-theory calculations, and we apply it to address twisted trilayer electronic structure. Our model accounts for moiré variation in site energies, hopping between outside layers, and hopping within layers. We focus on the role of a mirror symmetry present in ABA graphene trilayers with a middle layer twist. The mirror symmetry is lost intentionally when a displacement field is applied between layers, and unintentionally when the top layer is shifted laterally relative to the bottom layer. We calculate two band-structure characteristics that are directly relevant to transport measurements, namely the Drude weight and the weak-field Hall conductivity. We relate them via the Hall density to assess the influence of the accidental lateral stacking shifts currently present in all experimental devices on electronic properties. Finally, we comment on the role of the possible importance of accidental lateral stacking shifts for superconductivity in twisted trilayers.

Disentangling ( 2 + 1 ) D topological states of matter with entanglement negativity

We use the entanglement negativity, a bipartite measure of entanglement in mixed quantum states, to study how multipartite entanglement constrains the real-space structure of the ground state wavefunctions of (2 + 1)-dimensional topological phases. We focus on the (Abelian) Laughlin and (non-Abelian) Moore-Read states at filling fraction ν = 1/m. We show that a combination of entanglement negativities, calculated with respect to specific cylinder and torus geometries, determines a necessary condition for when a topological state can be disentangled, i.e., factorized into a tensor product of states defined on cylinder subregions. This condition, which requires the ground state to lie in a definite topological sector, is sufficient for the Laughlin state. On the other hand, we find that a general Moore-Read ground state cannot be disentangled even when the disentangling condition holds.

Abelian SU(N) 1 chiral spin liquids on the square lattice

In the physics of the Fractional Quantum Hall (FQH) effect, a zoo of Abelian topological phases can be obtained by varying the magnetic field. Aiming to reach the same phenomenology in spin-like systems, in this work we propose a family of SU(N)-symmetric models in the fundamental representation, on the square lattice with short-range interactions restricted to triangular units, a natural generalization for arbitrary N of an SU(3) model studied previously where time-reversal symmetry is broken explicitly. Guided by the recent discovery of SU(2) 1 and SU(3) 1 chiral spin liquids (CSL) on similar models we search for topological SU(N) 1 CSL in some range of the Hamiltonian parameters via a combination of complementary numerical methods such as exact diagonaliza- tions (ED), infinite density matrix renormalization group (iDMRG) and infinite Projected Entangled Pair State (iPEPS). Extensive ED on small (periodic and open) clusters up to N = 10 and an innovative SU(N)-symmetric version of iDMRG to compute entanglement spectra on (infinitely-long) cylinders in all topological sectors pro- vide unambiguous signatures of the SU(N) 1 character of the chiral liquids. An SU(4)-symmetric chiral PEPS, constructed in a manner similar to its SU(2) and SU(3) analogs, is shown to give a good variational ansatz of the N = 4 ground state, with chiral edge modes originating from the PEPS holographic bulk-edge correspondence. Finally, we discuss the possible observation of such Abelian CSL in ultracold atom setups where the possibility of varying N provides a tuning parameter similar to the magnetic field in the physics of the FQH effect.

Approximate two-body generating Hamiltonian for the particle-hole Pfaffian wave function

We present two two-body Hamiltonians that approximate the exact particle-hole Pfaffian wave function with their ground states for all the system sizes where this wave function has been numerically constructed to date. The approximate wave functions have high overlap with the original and reproduce well the low-lying entanglement spectrum and structure factor. The approximate generating Hamiltonians are obtained by an optimization procedure where three to four pseudopotentials are varied in the neighbourhood of second Landau level Coulomb interaction or of a noninteracting model. They belong to a finite region in the variational space of Hamiltonians where each point approximately generates the particle-hole Pfaffian. Here we diagonalize the identified Hamiltonians for up to 20 electrons and find that for them the particle-hole Pfaffian shift appears energetically more favorable. The possibility to interpret the data in terms of composite fermions is discussed.

Graviton chirality and topological order in the half-filled Landau level

The fractional quantum Hall state at the Landau level filling factor 5/2 is extremely interesting because it is likely the first non-Abelian state, but its precise nature remains unclear after decades of study. Here we demonstrate this can be resolved by studying the chirality of its graviton excitations, using circularly polarized Raman scattering. We discuss the advantage of this bulk probe over the existing edge probes.

Adiabatic construction of hierarchical quantum Hall states

We propose an exact model of anyon ground states including higher Landau levels, and use it to obtain fractionally quantized Hall states at filling fractions ν = p/(p(m - 1) + 1) with m odd, from integer Hall states at ν = p through adiabatic localization of magnetic flux. For appropriately chosen two-body potential interactions, the energy gap remains intact during the process. The construction hence establishes the existence of incompressible states at these fillings.

Scar states in a system of interacting chiral fermions

Here, we study the nature of many-body eigenstates of a system of interacting chiral spinless fermions on a ring. We find a coexistence of fermionic and bosonic types of eigenstates in parts of the many-body spectrum. Some bosonic eigenstates, native to the strong interaction limit, persist at intermediate and weak couplings, enabling persistent density oscillations in the system, despite it being far from integrability.
