Highly-Active and Contaminant-Tolerant Cathodes for Durable Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

The objective of this project is to investigate the fundamental degradation methods occurring in solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) cathodes when exposed to chromium and carbon dioxide contamination and to rationally design alkaline earth-based catalysts to increase stability and tolerance to contaminate poisoning. With a mechanistic and fundamental understanding of the degradation methods, advanced catalytic surface modifications can be applied to reduce degradation. The specific technical objectives are: (1) To identify/develop new catalysts (alkaline-earth based-) that are compatible chemically with the state-of-the-art cathode materials at high temperatures required for fabrication and with contaminates commonly encountered under operating conditions; (2) To improve the infiltration process for optimal control of the thickness, composition, and uniformity of the catalyst coatings; (3) To evaluate the electro-catalytic activity toward ORR of the chemically-stable materials when exposed to different types of contaminants using electrical conductivity relaxation measurements on bar samples and performance evaluation of catalyst-infiltrated cathodes; (4) To unravel the contamination-tolerant mechanisms of the new catalyst coatings under realistic environmental conditions (with different types of contaminants) using powerful in situ and in operando characterization techniques performed on model cells with thin-film/pattern electrodes, as guided by modeling and simulation; (5) To establish scientific basis for rational design of new catalysts of high tolerance to contaminants; (6) To validate the long term stability of modified LSCF cathodes in commercially available cells/stacks under ROC. Alkaline earth-based catalysts have been systematically explored and tested under various contamination conditions. BaCoO 3-δ (BCO) was shown to produce the best catalytic activity enhancement as well as stability in a variety of contaminating conditions, including CO 2 and chromium. The microstructural evolution was investigated with SEM, EDS, and Raman spectroscopy, showing the BCO catalyst prevents the formation of insulating SrCrO 4 by forming electrically conductive BaCrO 4 . Electrochemical relaxation measurements determined the BCO catalyst coatings increased the surface diffusion coefficient but did not significantly affect the diffusion coefficient and determined an optimum surface modification layer of 100 nm. A novel Ba 0.9 Co 0.7 Fe 0.2 Nb 0.1 O x (BCFN) catalyst was also shown to have excellent stability in chromium containing atmospheres. A novel surface sol-gel (SSG) surface modification, which offers superior thickness and compositional control, was applied to SOFCs to produce BaO catalyst coatings. SSG BaO coatings were shown to produce conformal coatings on the electrode surface, greatly4 increasing stability in chromium containing atmospheres. An atomic level mechanistic approach was applied to investigate the stability of PrBa 0.8 Ca 0.2 Co 2 O 5+δ (PBCC) with respect to a variety of common contaminants, demonstrating thermodynamically its superior stability in CO 2 containing atmospheres. Finally, the best catalyst coatings demonstrated in this project, BCO and PBCC, were applied to full cells which demonstrated superior stability for over 300 hours in CO 2 and Cr atmospheres.

Phosphoric acid fuel cell platinum use study

The U.S. Department of Energy is promoting the private development of phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC) power plants for terrestrial applications. Current PAFC technology utilizes platinum as catalysts in the power electrodes. The possible repercussions that the platinum demand of PAFC power plant commercialization will have on the worldwide supply and price of platinum from the outset of commercialization to the year 2000 are investigated. The platinum demand of PAFC commercialization is estimated by developing forecasts of platinum use per unit of generating capacity and penetration of PAFC power plants into the electric generation market. The ability of the platinum supply market to meet future demands is gauged by assessing the size of platinum reserves and the capability of platinum producers to extract, refine and market sufficient quantities of these reserves. The size and timing of platinum price shifts induced by the added demand of PAFC commercialization are investigated by several analytical methods. Estimates of these price shifts are then used to calculate the subsequent effects on PAFC power plant capital costs.

Manual of phosphoric acid fuel cell stack three-dimensional model and computer program

A detailed distributed mathematical model of phosphoric acid fuel cell stack have been developed, with the FORTRAN computer program, for analyzing the temperature distribution in the stack and the associated current density distribution on the cell plates. Energy, mass, and electrochemical analyses in the stack were combined to develop the model. Several reasonable assumptions were made to solve this mathematical model by means of the finite differences numerical method.

Status of commercial phosphoric acid fuel cell power plant system development

A technology development and commercial feasibility evaluation is presented for phosphoric acid fuel cells (PAFCs) applicable to electric utility operations. The correction of identified design deficiencies in the control card and water treatment subsystems is projected to be able to substantially increase average powerplant availability from the 63 percent achieved in recent field tests of a PAFC system. Current development work is proceeding under NASA research contracts at the output levels of a multimegawatt facility for electric utility use, a multikilowatt on-site integrated energy generation facility, and advanced electrocatalysts applicable to PAFCs.

Computer-based phosphoric acid fuel cell analytical tools Descriptions and usages

Simulation models have been developed for the prediction of phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC) powerplant system performance under both transient and steady operation conditions, as well as for the design of component configurations and for optimal systems synthesis. These models, which are presently computer-implemented, are an engineering and a system model; the former being solved by the finite difference method to determine the balances and properties of different sections, and the latter using thermodynamic balances to set up algebraic equations that yield physical and chemical properties of the stream for one operating condition.

Synthesis and Characterization of Polymers for Fuel Cells Application

The goal of this summer research is to prepare Polymer Exchange Membranes (PEM s) for fuel cell application. Several high temperature polymers such as polybenzimidazoles and polyether ketones were known to possess good high temperature stability and had been investigated by post-sulfonation to yield sulfonated polymers. The research project will involve two approaches: 1. Synthesis of polybenzimidazoles and then react with alkyl sultonse to attach an aliphatic sulfonic groups. 2. Synthesis of monomers containing sulfonic acid units either on a aromatic ring or on an aliphatic chain and then polymerize the monomers to form high molecular weight sulfonate polymers.

Hydrogen-Oxygen PEM Regenerative Fuel Cell Development at the NASA Glenn Research Center

The closed-cycle hydrogen-oxygen PEM regenerative fuel cell (RFC) at the NASA Glenn Research Center has successfully demonstrated closed cycle operation at rated power for multiple charge-discharge cycles. During charge cycle the RFC has absorbed input electrical power simulating a solar day cycle ranging from zero to 15 kWe peak, and delivered steady 5 kWe output power for periods exceeding 8 hr. Orderly transitions from charge to discharge mode, and return to charging after full discharge, have been accomplished without incident. Continuing test operations focus on: (1) Increasing the number of contiguous uninterrupted charge discharge cycles; (2) Increasing the performance envelope boundaries; (3) Operating the RFC as an energy storage device on a regular basis; (4) Gaining operational experience leading to development of fully automated operation; and (5) Developing instrumentation and in situ fluid sampling strategies to monitor health and anticipate breakdowns.

Proton conducting membranes for high temperature fuel cells with solid state water free membranes

A water free, proton conducting membrane for use in a fuel cell is fabricated as a highly conducting sheet of converted solid state organic amine salt, such as converted acid salt of triethylenediamine with two quaternized tertiary nitrogen atoms, combined with a nanoparticulate oxide and a stable binder combined with the converted solid state organic amine salt to form a polymeric electrolyte membrane. In one embodiment the membrane is derived from triethylenediamine sulfate, hydrogen phosphate or trifiate, an oxoanion with at least one ionizable hydrogen, organic tertiary amine bisulfate, polymeric quaternized amine bisulfate or phosphate, or polymeric organic compounds with quaternizable nitrogen combined with Nafion to form an intimate network with ionic interactions.

Develop and test fuel cell powered on-site integrated total energy systems: Phase 3, full-scale power plant development

A 25 cell stack of the 13 inch x 23 inch cell size (about 4kW) remains on test after 6000 hours, using simulated reformate fuel. A similar stack was previously shut down after 7000 hours on load. These tests were carried out for the purpose of assessing the durability of fuel cell stack components developed through the end of 1983. In light of the favorable results obtained, a 25kW stack that will contain 175 cells of the same size is being constructed using the same technology base. The components for the 25kW stack have been completed. A methanol steam reformer with a design output equivalent to 50kW has been constructed to serve as a hydrogen generator for the 25kW stack. This reformer and the balance of the fuel processing sub system are currently being tested and debugged. The stack technology development program focused on cost reduction in bipolar plates, nonmetallic cooling plates, and current collecting plates; more stable cathode catalyst support materials; more corrosion resistant metal hardware; and shutdown/start up tolerance.

Critical Parameter Identification of Fuel-Cell Models Using Sensitivity Analysis

Numerical modeling has been a vital tool in proton-exchange-membrane fuel-cell (PEMFC) analysis; however, the predictive capabilities of these models depend on the input physical parameters, several of which are either not experimentally measured or have large scatter in measured values. This article presents an uncertainty propagation-based sensitivity analysis to identify the model parameters that impact the model predictions most. A comprehensive 2-D membrane electrode assembly (MEA) model is used to perform local sensitivity analysis at multiple operating conditions, which encompass the range of environments and operating conditions a cell can encounter. While at lower humidities, cathode kinetics and membrane-ohmic-loss related parameters are crucial, gas transport and porous-media saturation behavior are more important at humidified conditions. Several of these findings are different from previous studies presented in literature. Identifying the crucial parameters helps focus future material and cell optimization studies as well as experimental studies to quantify these parameters with higher accuracy.

Manual of phosphoric acid fuel cell power plant optimization model and computer program

An optimized cost and performance model for a phosphoric acid fuel cell power plant system was derived and developed into a modular FORTRAN computer code. Cost, energy, mass, and electrochemical analyses were combined to develop a mathematical model for optimizing the steam to methane ratio in the reformer, hydrogen utilization in the PAFC plates per stack. The nonlinear programming code, COMPUTE, was used to solve this model, in which the method of mixed penalty function combined with Hooke and Jeeves pattern search was chosen to evaluate this specific optimization problem.
