Broadband ultraviolet reflectance filters for space applications.

It is shown that a simple metal-dielectric-metal filter for broadband ultraviolet (BUV) reflectance control can provide a stable and effective means for reducing stray visible radiation in UV reflective optical systems. The application of such a filter in a BUV instrument resulted in a reduction of scattered visible light by at least an order of magnitude. The instrument has been in orbit for 2.5 year without loss of sensitivity or an increase in scattered light background.-

On the design of wave digital filters with low sensitivity properties.

The wave digital filter patterned after doubly terminated maximum available power (MAP) networks by means of the Richard's transformation has been shown to have low-coefficient-sensitivity properties. This paper examines the exact nature of the relationship between the wave-digital-filter structure and the MAP networks and how the sensitivity property arises, which permits implementation of the digital structure with a lower coefficient word length than that possible with the conventional structures. The proper design procedure is specified and the nature of the unique complementary outputs is discussed. Finally, an example is considered which illustrates the design, the conversion techniques, and the low sensitivity properties.

Shuttle unified navigation filter, revision 1

Equations designed to meet the navigation requirements of the separate shuttle mission phases are presented in a series of reports entitled, Space Shuttle GN and C Equation Document. The development of these equations is based on performance studies carried out for each particular mission phase. Although navigation equations have been documented separately for each mission phase, a single unified navigation filter design is embodied in these separate designs. The purpose of this document is to present the shuttle navigation equations in a form in which they would most likely be coded-as the single unified navigation filter used in each mission phase. This document will then serve as a single general reference for the navigation equations replacing each of the individual mission phase navigation documents (which may still be used as a description of a particular navigation phase).

Lunar laser ranging data deposited in the National Space Science Data Center: Filtered observations for January - June 1972 and unfiltered photon detections for July - December 1972

The documentation to be used in conjunction with the filtered data deposited in the National Space Science Data Center is presented. The data was obtained during laser ranging operations between the McDonald Observatory and Apollo 11, 14, and 15 reflectors for the six months ending June 30, 1972. Unfiltered photon detections for the succeeding six months are also included in the system. Nominal coordinates for the laser ranging equipment are given and the calibration code for filtered data is shown. Data format using the CDC 6600 computer is described.

Design of FIR digital filters for pulse shaping and channel equalization using time-domain optimization

Three algorithms are developed for designing finite impulse response digital filters to be used for pulse shaping and channel equalization. The first is the Minimax algorithm which uses linear programming to design a frequency-sampling filter with a pulse shape that approximates the specification in a minimax sense. Design examples are included which accurately approximate a specified impulse response with a maximum error of 0.03 using only six resonators. The second algorithm is an extension of the Minimax algorithm to design preset equalizers for channels with known impulse responses. Both transversal and frequency-sampling equalizer structures are designed to produce a minimax approximation of a specified channel output waveform. Examples of these designs are compared as to the accuracy of the approximation, the resultant intersymbol interference (ISI), and the required transmitted energy. While the transversal designs are slightly more accurate, the frequency-sampling designs using six resonators have smaller ISI and energy values.

Capacitance multiplier and filter synthesizing network

A circuit using a differential amplifier multiplies the capacitance of a discrete interating capacitor by (r sub 1 + R sub 2)/R sub 2, where R sub 1 and R sub 2 are values of discrete resistor coupling an input signal e sub 1 of the amplifier inputs. The output e sub 0 of the amplifier is fed back and added to the signal coupled by the resistor R sub 2 to the amplifier through a resistor of value R sub 1. A discrete resistor R sub x may be connected in series for a lag filter, and a discrete resistor may be connected in series with the capacitor for a lead-lag filter. Voltage dividing resistors R sub a and R sub b may be included in the feedback circuit of the amplifier output e sub o to independently adjust the circuit gain e sub i/e sub o.

A square-root data array solution of the continuous-discrete filtering problem

The Dyer-McReynolds (1969) discrete square-root filtering algorithm is extended to accommodate continuous dynamics. Differential equations are given to represent the time evolution of the filter data array. These equations are nonlinear, but it is shown that the nonlinearities act to enhance the stability of the solution.

Real-time shipboard orbit determination using Kalman filtering techniques

The real-time tracking and orbit determination program used on board the NASA tracking ship, the USNS Vanguard, is described in this paper. The computer program uses a variety of filtering algorithms, including an extended Kalman filter, to derive real-time orbit determinations (position-velocity state vectors) from shipboard tracking and navigation data. Results from Apollo missions are given to show that orbital parameters can be estimated quickly and accurately using these methods.

Evaluation of film type QX 807 (SO-368, Kodak Ektachrome MS, Estar thin base, with an equivalent Wratten 2A filter overcoat)

A color film with a sensitivity and color balance equal to SO-368, Kodak MS Ektachrome (Estar thin base) was required for use on the Apollo-Soyuz test project (ASTP). A Wratten 2A filter was required for use with the film to reduce short wavelength effects which frequently produce a blue color balance in aerial photographs. The background regarding a special emulsion which was produced with a 2A filter equivalent as an integral part of an SO-368 film manufactured by Eastman Kodak, the cost for production of the special film, and the results of a series of tests made within PTD to certify the film for ASTP use are documented. The tests conducted and documented were physical inspection, process compatibility, effective sensitivity, color balance, cross section analysis, resolution, spectral sensitivity, consistency of results, and picture sample analysis.

A digital algorithm for spectral deconvolution with noise filtering and peak picking: NOFIPP-DECON

Noise-filtering, peak-picking deconvolution software incorporates multiple convoluted convolute integers and multiparameter optimization pattern search. The two theories are described and three aspects of the software package are discussed in detail. Noise-filtering deconvolution was applied to a number of experimental cases ranging from noisy, nondispersive X-ray analyzer data to very noisy photoelectric polarimeter data. Comparisons were made with published infrared data, and a man-machine interactive language has evolved for assisting in very difficult cases. A modified version of the program is being used for routine preprocessing of mass spectral and gas chromatographic data.

Sequential filtering applied to the determination of tracking station locations

The extended sequential filter has been applied to the problem of dynamically determining the geocentric coordinates of two laser satellite tracking stations. This filter provides significant advantages over the classical batch methods through (1) fewer iterations required for convergence, (2) wider radius of convergence, and (3) availability of the parameter estimate evolution. Processing the data sequentially readily identifies the data arcs required to minimize the effects of geopotential model errors. By means of the Smithsonian standard earth 2 and the Goddard earth model 1 geopotentials to reduce laser range observations of the Beacon Explorer-C satellite, it is demonstrated that a two-pass arc is optimal for estimating the height of one station and all coordinates of the second station while minimizing the effect of geopotential model error. These two-pass estimates are in good agreement with other determinations that utilize considerably more data as well as different satellites.

A note on optimal filtering in the presence of unknown biases

This note considers some aspects of the optimal filtering problem for linear processes in the presence of unknown biases in the input and the observations. It is proved via duality that the optimal filtering problem in the presence of an input bias is equivalent to a certain optimal regulator problem incorporating integral feedback. The question of observability of the augmented system used in the state and bias estimation is answered by deriving necessary and sufficient conditions when bias is present (1) in the input, (2) in the observations and (3) both in the input and the observations.
