The staging system: Display and edit module

The Display and Edit (D and E) Module described is one of six major modules being developed for the STAGING (STructural Analysis through Generalized INteractive Graphics) System. Several remarks are included concerning the computer environment and the architecture of the data base. The utility of this module is emphasized.

Processing and display techniques for Doppler flow signals

The goals of various processing and display techniques are derived from the Doppler spectrum. A meaningful measure of flow phenomenon was investigated, and this measure was presented to an operator. Important measures went beyond indication of velocity of flow or volume flow and included indications of the type of flow, i.e., laminar or turbulent, as well as geometric parameters such as depth, width or cross sectional area of the flow stream.

Three-dimensional reconstruction and display of the heart, lungs and circulation by multiplanar X-ray scanning videodensitometry

A device was developed which makes possible the dynamic reconstruction of the heart and lungs within the intact thorax of a living dog or human and which can record approximately 30 multiplanar X-ray images of the thorax practically instantaneously, and at frequent enough intervals of time and with sufficient density and spatial resolution to capture and resolve the most rapid changes in cardiac structural detail throughout each cardiac cycle. It can be installed in a clinical diagnostic setting as well as in a research environment and its construction and application for determination and display in real-time modes of cross sections of the functioning thorax and its contents of living animals and man is technologically feasible.

Flight evaluation of advanced flight control systems and cockpit displays for powered-lift STOL Aircraft

A flight research program was conducted to assess the improvements, in longitudinal path control during a STOL approach and landing, that can be achieved with manual and automatic control system concepts and cockpit displays with various degrees of complexity. NASA-Ames powered-lift Augmentor Wing Research Aircraft was used in the research program. Satisfactory flying qualities were demonstrated for selected stabilization and command augmentation systems and flight director combinations. The ability of the pilot to perform precise landings at low touchdown sink rates with a gentle flare maneuver was also achieved. The path-control improvement is considered to be applicable to other powered-lift aircraft configurations.

Binocular device for displaying numerical information in field of view

An apparatus is described for superimposing numerical information on the field of view of binoculars. The invention has application in the flying of radio-controlled model airplanes. Information such as airspeed and angle of attack are sensed on a model airplane and transmitted back to earth where this information is changed into numerical form. Optical means are attached to the binoculars that a pilot is using to track the model air plane for displaying the numerical information in the field of view of the binoculars. The device includes means for focusing the numerical information at infinity whereby the user of the binoculars can see both the field of view and the numerical information without refocusing his eyes.

A four digit memory-mapped display

A circuit for interfacing the JOLT (TM) microprocessor to four digital displays was designed and fabricated. Circuit operation and test program are described and presented in detail.

Accurate positioning of characters on CRT displays

Two systems, one digital and one analog, improve positioning of characters in cathode-ray tube (CRT) display systems. Circuits minimize effects of amplifier settling times--effects that can displace and distort characters in high-speed multiplexed systems.

Data processing and display of laser Doppler experimental results, volume 1

Contract activities performed in developing a laser Doppler system for detecting, tracking, and measuring aircraft wake vortices are summarized. The computer program for processing and displaying the Dust Devil experimental data is presented. Program listings are included in the appendix.

Projection system for display of parallax and perspective

A projection system for the display of parallax and perspective of a real image from a hologram is presented. A reference beam was projected in a sequence of several projections at selected angles of perspective through the hologram, this sequence being rapidly performed. The resulting angular spaced images emitting from the hologram were directed onto a mirror which was coordinately tilted to reflect all of the resulting images to register onto a screen where they appeared as a single three dimensional image.

Orbit IMU alinement interpretation of onboard display data

The space shuttle inertial measurement unit (IMU) alinement algorith was examined to determine the most important alinement starpair selection criterion. Three crew displayed parameters were considered: (1) the results of the separation angle difference (SAD) check for each starpair; (2) the separation angle of each starpair; and (3) the age of each star measurement. It was determined that the SAD for each pair cannot be used to predict the IMu alinement accuracy. If the age of each star measurement is less than approximately 30 minutes, time is a relatively unimportant factor and the most important alinement pair selection criterion is the starpair separation angle. Therefore, when there are three available alinement starpairs and all measurements were taken within the last 30 minutes, the pair with the separation angle closest to 90 degrees should be selected for IMU alinement.

Analysis and in-simulator evaluation of display and control concepts for a terminal configured vehicle in final approach in a windshear environment

Display Control configurations for the Terminal configured Vehicle in approach to landing situations were analyzed. A pilot/vehicle model was used to compare with a real time simulation study. Model results are presented and extended for the approach task during wind shear and random turbulence environments. In general, model results of performance trends matched those obtained experimentally.

Project plan for joint FAA/NASA head-up display concept evaluation

Head-Up Display (HUD) concept for large commercial turbojet transport aircraft is considered for the its contribution to aviation safety in the form of improved performance during the approach and landing phase flight. The basic reearch areas represent fundamental questions that are still unresolved and which were considered important to the effective use of the HUD by pilots. Project documentation and management responsibilities are outlined.
