Machine Learning for Improved Availability of the SNS Klystron High Voltage Converter Modulators

Beam availability has increased at the SNS, however, the targeted availability is greater than 95 %, while the SNS has failed to meet lower targets in the past. The HVCM used to power the linac klystrons have been one source of lost beam time and was chosen to explore using AI/ML techniques to improve reliability. Among the possibilities being explored are automating the tuning of HVCMs and predicting component failures such as capacitor aging, rectifier assemblies containing hundreds of diodes, and insulating oil degradation. The methodology pursued includes data cleaning, de-noising, post-analysis data labeling, and machine learning model development. We explore using Long Short-Term Memory and autoencoders for anomaly detection and prognostication used to schedule maintenance. We evaluate the use of model regularizers and constraints to improve the performance of the model and investigate methods to estimate the uncertainty of the models to provide a robust prediction with statistical interoperability. This paper describes the operational experience and known failures of the HVCMs and the proposed ML methodology and the preliminary results of training the AI/ML algorithms.

Method of manufacturing a complex product by an additive process

A method of producing a complex product includes designing a three dimensional preform of the complex product, creating a three dimensional preform of the complex product using the model, depositing a material on the preform, and removing the preform to complete the complex product. In one embodiment the system provides a complex heat sink that can be used in heat dissipation in power electronics, light emitting diodes, and microchips.

The second H bridge circuit includes one or more anti-series diodes for preventing current from the first power supply from passing through the second H bridge circuit to the second power supply. The first H bridge circuit and the second H bridge circuit are configured to conductively couple to the electronic component for providing a voltage with a predefined waveform to the electronic component.

Efficiency Improvement Progress in Green, Yellow and Red III Nitride LEDs

Large improvements in the efficiencies of visible light emitting diodes (LEDs) have been realized over the last decade. Extending the range of wavelengths over which efficient emission can be realized continues to be a goal of active research. Efficiency droop refers to a non-thermal decrease in internal quantum efficiency with increasing current density that affects III-nitride LEDs in general, but more severely those with longer emission wavelengths. The so-called green gap is mainly related to the wavelength dependence of efficiency droop. The peak EQE in commercial green LEDs exceeds 60% but corresponds to a current density that is an order of magnitude lower than required for applications. In this presentation, we will review some of the underlying physics that contribute to the wavelength dependence of droop. We will discuss some challenges in the development of long wavelength III-nitride LEDs and possible strategies to mitigate efficiency droop based on the understanding that nonradiative Auger recombination is the root cause. One general strategy is to engineer the multi-quantum well active region to minimize the average carrier density. Another approach is to design wells with a more favorable balance between the radiative and Auger coefficients. Finally, we will present the current status of the performance of green, yellow and red III-Nitride LEDs.

A 40 Gbps Optical Transceiver for Particle Physics Experiments

We present the design and the test results of a quad-channel optical transceiver module (QTRx) possibly for future particle physics experiments. The transmitters of QTRx, each at 10 Gbps, are based on a Quad-channel VCSEL Diode array Driver (QLDD) and 1 x 4 VCSEL array. The receivers of QTRx, with data rates of 2.56 Gbps or 10 Gbps per channel, are based on a Quad-channel Trans-Impedance and limiting Amplifier (QTIA) and 1 x 4 photodiode array of GaAs or InGaAs. QTRx is 20 mm x 10 mm x 5 mm and couples to an MT fiber connector. Test results indicate that QTRx achieves the design goals with a power consumption of 124 mW per transmitter channel at 10 Gbps and 120 mW at 2.56 Gbps for the receiver channel with an on-chip charge pump. The sensitivities of QTIA are -17 dBm at 2.56 Gbps and -8 dBm at 10 Gbps, respectively. Further improvements with a gold-finger interface and a more compact optical lens are being designed.

Electrostatic energy harvester

An electrostatic energy harvester broadly comprises an electrical energy storage component, an electrical energy transfer stage, first and second variable capacitors, and a switching control module. The electrical energy transfer stage includes diode-connected transistors and dictates electrical energy transfer between the electrical energy storage component and the variable capacitors. The switching control module timely switches between the first and second variable capacitors according to a state machine. Subsequent electrical energy investments from the electrical energy storage component are less than an initial electrical energy investment due to remnant electrical energy remaining at the previously active one of the first and second variable capacitors from previous electrical energy harvesting.

Plasma-based edge terminations for gallium nitride power devices

A p-n diode includes a first electrode, a n-GaN layer on the first electrode, a p-GaN layer on the n-GaN layer, and a second electrode on a first portion of the p-GaN layer. A region of the p-GaN layer surrounding the electrode is a passivated region. Treating a GaN power device having a p-GaN layer includes covering a portion of the p-GaN layer with a metal layer, exposing the p-GaN layer to a hydrogen plasma, and thermally annealing the p-GaN layer, thereby passivating a region of the p-GaN layer proximate the metal layer.

Effective Selective Area Doping for GaN Vertical Power Transistors Enabled by Innovative Materials Engineering

GaN vertical power transistors have emerged as promising candidates for future high efficiency high power electronic applications, with the potential to outperform conventional GaN lateral power devices in terms of power, breakdown, and avalanche characteristics. However, the development of current GaN vertical power transistors is seriously hindered by the poor materials performance of selective area doped p-n junctions. A mechanistic understanding of these fundamental materials issues is essential in order to achieve high performance selective area doped p-n junctions and consequently to advance the GaN vertical power transistor technology. To address this challenge, we carried out a comprehensive research program that advance fundamental knowledge in the selective area doping for GaN materials, and which will lead to the development of high performance GaN vertical power transistors. First, we developed innovative fabrication processes, including novel surface etching, surface passivation, and metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) growth, which provided enhanced opportunities for solving the unique challenges of selective area doping in GaN materials. Second, we performed a fundamental materials study using powerful characterization methods including transmission electron microscopy (TEM), ultraviolet (UV-), x-ray and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS/XPS/ARPES), electron holography, and cathodoluminescence (CL); Third, we investigated several related issues, including Mg incorporation, polarization effects in carrier transport, and non-ideal material effects, which have rarely been explored so far. At the end of this project, we successfully demonstrated (1) fundamental understanding of selective area etching, regrowth, and doping of GaN, and associated knowledge on defects, interface, and breakdown properties. (2) Effective etch and regrowth processing recipes to achieve etch/regrowth GaN p-n diodes with very low leakage of 3.5 nA at 600 V, which meets the ARPA-E target. (2) High performance vertical GaN p-n didoes and vertical junction termination extension (JTE) devices with breakdown voltage of ~ 2 kV, and breakdown electric field of ~ 3.5 MV/cm, which are close to the performance limit of GaN. The successful outcome has resulted in new fundamental understandings in the selective area doping and regrowth process for GaN, which will lead to groundbreaking GaN vertical transistors for high performance next generation power electronics.
