Unconventional supercurrent phase in Ising superconductor Josephson junction with atomically thin magnetic insulator

Abstract In two-dimensional (2D) NbSe 2 crystal, which lacks inversion symmetry, strong spin-orbit coupling aligns the spins of Cooper pairs to the orbital valleys, forming Ising Cooper pairs (ICPs). The unusual spin texture of ICPs can be further modulated by introducing magnetic exchange. Here, we report unconventional supercurrent phase in van der Waals heterostructure Josephson junctions (JJs) that couples NbSe 2 ICPs across an atomically thin magnetic insulator (MI) Cr 2 Ge 2 Te 6 . By constructing a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID), we measure the phase of the transferred Cooper pairs in the MI JJ. We demonstrate a doubly degenerate nontrivial JJ phase ( ϕ ), formed by momentum-conserving tunneling of ICPs across magnetic domains in the barrier. The doubly degenerate ground states in MI JJs provide a two-level quantum system that can be utilized as a new dissipationless component for superconducting quantum devices. Our work boosts the study of various superconducting states with spin-orbit coupling, opening up an avenue to designing new superconducting phase-controlled quantum electronic devices.

Charge transfer in transition metal dichalcogenide alloy heterostructures

Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides and their alloys provide a unique platform for exploring interlayer charge transfer in van der Waals heterostructures. These structures are crucial for advancing the next-generation electronic, optoelectronic, and quantum devices. In this study, interlayer charge transfer in heterostructures composed of MoSe 2 , MoS 2 , and their alloy, MoSSe, is investigated using transient absorption, Raman, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The experimental results reveal that electron transfer in the alloy heterostructures, MoSSe/MoS 2 and MoSe 2 /MoSSe, is faster than in the pure MoSe 2 /MoS 2 heterostructure, despite the smaller conduction band offsets of the alloy systems. Raman spectroscopy confirms that alloy layers support phonon modes matching those of the pure layers, aligning with theoretical models of phonon-assisted interlayer charge transfer. Additionally, efficient hole transfer is observed in both alloy heterostructures. The findings suggest transition metal dichalcogenides alloys can be used for engineering heterostructures with desired charge transfer properties. By leveraging compositionally tunable band gaps and optical properties, alloy-based heterostructures offer opportunities for designing tailored materials suitable for diverse applications such as photodetectors, light-emitting devices, and flexible electronics. Furthermore, the ultrafast charge transfer observed in these systems provides insights into the fundamental mechanisms governing interlayer interactions in 2D materials.

Anomalous Thermal Hall Effect in an Insulating van der Waals Magnet

Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) magnets have been a fertile playground for the discovery and exploration of physical phenomena and new physics. In this Letter, we report the observation of an anomalous thermal Hall effect (THE) with κ xy ~ 1 × 10 -2 WK -1 m -1 in an insulating van der Waals ferromagnet VI 3 . The thermal Hall signal persists in the absence of an external magnetic field and flips sign upon the switching of the magnetization. In combination with theoretical calculations, we show that VI 3 exhibits a dual nature of the THE, i.e., dominated by topological magnons hosted by the ferromagnetic honeycomb lattice at higher temperatures and by phonons induced by the magnon-phonon coupling at lower temperatures. Our results not only position VI 3 as the first ferromagnetic system to investigate both anomalous magnon and phonon THEs, but also render it as a potential platform for spintronics-magnonics applications.

A Physical Model for Understanding the Activation of MoS 2 Basal-plane Sulfur Atoms for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

All the DFT calculations are done with the Vienna Ab Initio Simulation Package (VASP) using the projector augmented wave method. The Bayesian error estimation exchange-correlation functionals (BEEF) with van der Waals interactions are employed. A plane-wave cutoff energy of 400 eV is used together with PAW-PBE potentials where semi core p states are treated as valence. All the calculations allow for spin-polarization. The structures are relaxed until the force is converged to < 0.01 eV/Å. The lattice parameter of MoS 2 unit cell, optimized with this functional, is 3.19 Å. A (4×4) supercell is used to model all the transition metal doped MoS 2 systems studied here, including those with S vacancies. For calculations in the initial dopant structure exploration, the Brillouin zone is sampled with a 3x3x1 Monkhorst-Pack k-point mesh. A 6×6×1 Monkhorst-Pack k-point mesh is used for the H binding energy and density of states calculations. In all calculations, the vacuum layer is set as 15 Å to eliminate periodic interaction perpendicular to the basal plane.

Benchmark Data Set of Crystalline Organic Semiconductors

This work reports a Benchmark Data set of Crystalline Organic Semiconductors to test calculations of the structural and electronic properties of these materials in the solid state. The data set contains 67 crystals consisting of mostly rigid molecules with a single dominant conformer, covering the majority of known structural types. The experimental crystal structure is available for the entire data set, whereas zero-temperature unit cell volume can be reliably estimated for a subset of 28 crystals. Using this subset, we benchmark r 2 SCAN-D3 and PBE-D3 density functionals. Then, for the entire data set, we benchmark approximate density functional theory (DFT) methods, including GFN1-xTB and DFTB3(3ob-3-1), with various dispersion corrections against r 2 SCAN-D3. Our results show that r 2 SCAN-D3 geometries are accurate within a few percent, which is comparable to the statistical uncertainty of experimental data at a fixed temperature, but the unit cell volume is systematically underestimated by 2% on average. The several times faster PBE-D3 provides an unbiased estimate of the volume for all systems except for molecules with highly polar bonds, for which the volume is substantially overestimated in correlation with the underestimation of atomic charges. Considered approximate DFT methods are orders of magnitude faster and provide qualitatively correct but overcompressed crystal structures unless the dispersion corrections are fitted by unit cell volume.

Existence of a flat band in highly correlated metal BaCo 2 P 2

We report on the observation of a flat band situated at the Fermi level E F along with the structural, electrical transport, and magnetic properties of BaCo 2 P 2 that crystallizes in the ThCr 2 Si 2 -type body-center tetragonal structure. This compound has the largest inter-layer pnictide (Pn) distance d Pn–Pn as well as the largest c/a ratio among all the known ACo 2 Pn 2 (A = alkaline earth metal) compounds, where a and c are the tetragonal lattice parameters. Hence, the magnetic and electronic properties of this compound are expected to have a quasi-two-dimensional character. Despite the evidence of the presence of sizable magnetic interactions, magnetic susceptibility χ(T) of BaCo 2 P 2 does not show magnetic ordering down to 1.8 K. The material shows good metallic conduction with a large residual resistivity ratio ρ 300 K /ρ 1.8 K ≈ 70 and a Fermi liquid behavior at low temperature. Kadowaki–Woods ratio R KW of BaCo 2 P 2 suggests the presence of sizable electronic correlations within this system. Additionally, a large many-body enhancement of 2.3 of the experimental density of states D γ (E F ) over the band-structure D band (E F ) is inferred to arise from sizable electron-electron and/or electron-phonon interactions leading to a substantial deviation from the free-electron behavior.

Unraveling Strain Gradient Induced Electromechanical Coupling in Twisted Double Bilayer Graphene Moiré Superlattices

Moiré superlattices of 2D materials with a small twist angle are thought to exhibit appreciable flexoelectric effect, though unambiguous confirmation of their flexoelectricity is challenging due to artifacts associated with commonly used piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). For example, unexpectedly small phase contrast (≈8°) between opposite flexoelectric polarizations is reported in twisted bilayer graphene (tBG), though theoretically predicted value is 180°. We report a methodology is developed to extract intrinsic moiré flexoelectricity using twisted double bilayer graphene (tDBG) as a model system, probed by lateral PFM. For small twist angle samples, it is found that a vectorial decomposition is essential to recover the small intrinsic flexoelectric response at domain walls from a large background signal. The obtained threefold symmetry of commensurate domains with significant flexoelectric response at domain walls is fully consistent with the theoretical calculations. Incommensurate domains in tDBG with relatively large twist angles can also be observed by this technique. A general strategy is provided here for unraveling intrinsic flexoelectricity in van der Waals moiré superlattices while providing insights into engineered symmetry breaking in centrosymmetric materials.

Flat-band driven Kondo breakdown and reentrant effects in heavy-fermion moiré superlattices

Moiré superlattices (MSLs) in van der Waals heterostructures have demonstrated their incredible power in driving emergent electronic phenomena, some of which are reminiscent of those usually only observed in bulk strongly correlated quantum materials. With the recent discovery of van der Waals 𝑓-electron materials, the design of novel MSLs of intrinsic strong correlation is now within the reach. Here we study the novel electron phases of two-dimensional heavy-fermion MSL with increasingly diluted 𝑓-electron local moments. By applying dynamical mean-field theory with numerical renormalization group as an impurity solver, we demonstrate the appearance of a different energy scale and a reentrant Kondo breakdown in connection with the emergence of a flat band in the system. We further compare our numerical findings with predictions derived from the Lieb-Mattis theorem and show the necessity of this energy scale to consistently reconcile the predictions with the conventional single-impurity limit for exceedingly large unit cells.

Direct Measurement of Terahertz Conductivity in a Gated Monolayer Semiconductor

Two-dimensional semiconductors and their moiré superlattices have emerged as important platforms for investigating correlated electrons. However, many key properties of these systems, such as the frequency-dependent conductivity, remain experimentally inaccessible because of the mesoscopic sample size. Here we report a technique to directly measure the complex conductivity of electrostatically gated two-dimensional semiconductors in the terahertz frequency range. Applying this technique to a WSe2 monolayer encapsulated in hBN, we observe a clear Drude-like response between 0.1 and 1 THz, in a density range challenging to access even in DC transport. Our work opens a new avenue for studying tunable van der Waals heterostructures using terahertz spectroscopy.

DERMS Online: A New Voltage Sensitivity-Enabled Feedback Optimization Framework: Preprint

This paper proposes a distributed energy resource management system (DERMS) solution by developing a new voltage sensitivity enabled feedback optimization framework. The key idea is to adopt a measurement feedback scheme to reformulate the original nonlinear optimization into a linear programming (LP) problem via perturb and observe-based voltage sensitivity analysis. The proposed solution eliminates the dependence on load knowledge and can be implemented online thanks to an efficient open-source solver for LP problems. The proposed DERMS online platform is generalizable to deal with various types of distributed energy resources (DERs), including distributed photovoltaics (PVs), energy storage, electric vehicles, demand response, etc. Comparison results with other control methods on a realistic distribution feeder in Southern California highlight the feasibility as well as benefits for the proposed framework.

Clean 2D superconductivity in a bulk van der Waals superlattice

Alternative route to a 2D superconductor Single layers of transition metal dichalcogenides exhibit exotic properties, including superconductivity. The usual route to obtaining such samples is to exfoliate a three-dimensional (3D) crystal. Devarakonda et al. instead grew a superlattice comprising alternating layers of the transition metal dichalcogenide hexagonal NbS 2 and the material Ba 3 NbS 5 (see the Perspective by Schoop). The inert Ba 3 NbS 5 layers serve to dissociate the superconducting NbS 2 layers from one another, resulting in 2D superconductivity with high carrier mobility. The combination of high mobility and reduced dimensionality may give rise to exotic quantum phases. Science , this issue p. 231 see also p. 170

Irradiation-enhanced torsional buckling capacity of carbon nanotube bundles

Molecular dynamics simulations are used to understand the torsional buckling of pristine and irradiated carbon nanotube (CNT) bundles. Irradiation-induced inter-tube defects are shown to significantly increase the critical buckling torque and critical buckling angle, while slightly increasing the torsional stiffness. In contrast, intra-tube defects are found to degrade the torsional properties. Such competing interactions cause irradiation enhancement to occur in large bundles where significant inter-tube bonding can occur. However, the irradiation enhancement effect becomes weak for very large bundles in which enhanced inter-tube interactions already exist in unirradiated bundles. In pristine CNT bundles of all sizes under torsional loading, CNTs can slip via the weakly interacting van der Waals force, whereas in the irradiated bundles, the inter-tube defects prevent slipping. The study further shows that the formation of one-dimensional carbon chain defects contributes to enhanced friction under slipping.

Impact of Aggregated PV on Subsynchronous Torsional Interaction

This paper investigates induced oscillation (specifically subsynchronous torsional interactions) in power systems arising from photovoltaic (PV) power modulation. Time domain simulations of a modified IEEE first-benchmark system are presented and analyzed. In the IEEE benchmark system, a PV generator was added at the same bus where the synchronous generator is connected. The impact of different parameters of the PV inverters’ volt-volt-ampere reactive (volt-var) curve on SSTI is examined. The most severe impact found arises from the time response of the inverter’s reactive power change. A second-order time response with natural frequency matching the rotor speed deviation oscillation frequency and low-damping ratio quickly drives the system to an unstable region. Although it is highly unlikely that conditions necessary for distributed energy resource-induced oscillations would occur in the field, with knowledge of this vulnerability in mind, inverters' control parameters can be designed to avoid it.

Thermal Hysteresis and Ordering Behavior of Magnetic Skyrmion Lattices

The physics of phase transitions in two-dimensional (2D) systems underpins research in diverse fields including statistical mechanics, nanomagnetism, and soft condensed matter. However, many aspects of 2D phase transitions are still not well understood, including the effects of interparticle potential, polydispersity, and particle shape. Magnetic skyrmions are chiral spin-structure quasi-particles that form two-dimensional lattices. Here, in this study, we show, by real-space imaging using in situ cryo-Lorentz transmission electron microscopy coupled with machine learning image analysis, the ordering behavior of Néel skyrmion lattices in van der Waals Fe 3 GeTe 2 . We demonstrate a distinct change in the skyrmion size distribution during field-cooling, which leads to a loss of lattice order and an evolution of the skyrmion liquid phase. Remarkably, the lattice order is restored during field heating and demonstrates a thermal hysteresis. This behavior is explained by the skyrmion energy landscape and demonstrates the potential to control the lattice order in 2D phase transitions.

Understanding the effect of density functional choice and van der Waals treatment on predicting the binding configuration, loading, and stability of amine-grafted metal organic frameworks

Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are crystalline, three-dimensional structures with high surface areas and tunable porosities. Made from metal nodes connected by organic linkers, the exact properties of a given MOF are determined by node and linker choice. MOFs hold promise for numerous applications, including gas capture and storage. M2(4,4′-dioxidobiphenyl-3,3′-dicarboxylate)—henceforth simply M2(dobpdc), with M = Mg, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, or Zn—is regarded as one of the most promising structures for CO2 capture applications. Further modification of the MOF with diamines or tetramines can significantly boost gas species selectivity, a necessity for the ultra-dilute CO2 concentrations in the direct-air capture of CO2. There are countless potential diamines and tetramines, paving the way for a vast number of potential sorbents to be probed for CO2 adsorption properties. The number of amines and their configuration in the MOF pore are key drivers of CO2 adsorption capacity and kinetics, and so a validation of computational prediction of these quantities is required to suitably use computational methods in the discovery and screening of amine-functionalized sorbents. In this work, we study the predictive accuracy of density functional theory and related calculations on amine loading and configuration for one diamine and two tetramines. In particular, we explore the Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof (PBE) functional and its formulation for solids (PBEsol) with and without the Grimme-D2 and Grimme-D3 pairwise corrections (PBE+D2/3 and PBEsol+D2/3), two revised PBE functionals with the Grimme-D2 and Grimme-D3 pairwise corrections (RPBE+D2/3 and revPBE+D2/3), and the nonlocal van der Waals correlation (vdW-DF2) functional. We also investigate a universal graph deep learning interatomic potential’s (M3GNet) predictive accuracy for loading and configuration. These results allow us to identify a useful screening procedure for configuration prediction that has a coarse component for quick evaluation and a higher accuracy component for detailed analysis. Our general observation is that the neural network-based potential can be used as a high-level and rapid screening tool, whereas PBEsol+D3 gives a completely qualitatively predictive picture across all systems studied, and can thus be used for high accuracy motif predictions. We close by briefly exploring the predictions of relative thermal stability for the different functionals and dispersion corrections.
