Feasibility study for the hard x-ray free electron laser based on synergistic use of conventional and plasma accelerator technologies

Hard x-ray free electron lasers (XFELs) are great diagnostic tools in modern science. A number of XFELs have been constructed worldwide in the past decade. In the past, Los Alamos National Laboratory has expressed interest in hosting a similar facility to support ongoing Programs. The facility has been envisioned based on a conventional radio frequency (RF) accelerator technology. As a result, the estimated size and cost of the anticipated facility turned out to be large, which significantly decreased attractiveness of this project.

Advanced Grid Operational Technology Edge-Level Threat Detection

This report presents a deployable solution to improve the cybersecurity situational awareness of the legacy SCADA system infrastructure in power grids. The main goal of this project is to provide system owners and operators a highly trusted, intelligent alarm system and comprehensive situational awareness of ongoing or potential cybersecurity threats on the grid network. The key contributions of this project include: (1) the development of software, the Intrusion Detection Visualizer for the Operational Technology Network (IViz-OT), to visualize and locate intrusions on the grid network; (2) testing the signature-based Hybrid Intrusion Detection for Energy Systems (HIDES) for different types of intrusions; (3) the integration of HIDES and IViz-OT into the visualization dashboard; and (4) real-time testing using a hardware-in-the-loop test bed.

Demonstration of the Human and Technology Integration Guidance for the Design of Plant-Specific Advanced Automation and Data Visualization Techniques

Nuclear power continues to be a safe, reliable, and carbon-free electricity generating source for the United States, though the cost of operating and maintaining the current United States nuclear power plant fleet has become uncompetitive with other sources. This gap is attributed to the advent of new digital instrumentation and control technologies that other electricity generating industries are currently leveraging to streamline work and greatly reduce operating, maintenance, and support costs. Digital instrumentation and control systems and control room modernization offers significant opportunities to reduce operating and maintenance costs to ensure the continued operation of the existing United States light-water reactors.

Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Nondestructive Examination Efforts at Idaho National Laboratory: Report of FY-24 Efforts

This report details FY-24 nondestructive examination (NDE) efforts at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) in support of the Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies (AMMT) program. While the goal of this endeavor is to develop a multi-modal, multi-length scale workflow for nondestructive characterization of advanced manufactured (AM) nuclear reactor components, substantial development remains until this is a reality. In support of this effort X-ray computed tomography (XCT), X-ray diffraction (XRD), neutron computed tomography (nCT), neutron diffraction, lock-in thermography (LIT), multi-point lock-in thermography (MLIT), and positron annihilation spectroscopy (PAS) were all used on AM specimens to examine defects such as voids, porosity, and residual stress. In addition to summarizing the results of these NDE applications, recommendations for integrating these into a more comprehensive undertaking to promote NDE of engineering-scale components are also included.
