Development of AC impedance methods for evaluating corroding metal surfaces and coatings

In an effort to investigate metal surface corrosion and the breakdown of metal protective coatings the AC Impedance Method was applied to zinc chromate primer coated 2219-T87 aluminum. The model 368-1 AC Impedance Measurement System recently acquired by the MSFC Corrosion Research Branch was used to monitor changing properties of coated aluminum disks immersed in 3.5% NaCl buffered at ph 5.5 over three to four weeks. The DC polarization resistance runs were performed on the same samples. The corrosion system can be represented by an electronic analog called an equivalent circuit that consists of transistors and capacitors in specific arrangements. This equivalent circuit parallels the impedance behavior of the corrosion system during a frequency scan. Values for resistances and capacities that can be assigned in the equivalent circuit following a least squares analysis of the data describe changes that occur on the corroding metal surface and in the protective coating. A suitable equivalent circuit was determined that predicts the correct Bode phase and magnitude for the experimental sample. The DC corrosion current density data are related to equivalent circuit element parameters.

The corrosion mechanisms for primer coated 2219-T87 aluminum

To investigate metal surface corrosion and the breakdown of metal protective coatings, the ac Impedance Method was applied to zinc chromate primer coated 2219-T87 aluminum. The EG&GPARC Model 368 ac Impedance Measurement System, along with dc measurements with the same system using the Polarization Resistance Method, was used to monitor changing properties of coated aluminum disks immersed in 3.5 percent NaCl solutions buffered at pH 5.5 and pH 8.2 over periods of 40 days each. The corrosion system can be represented by an electronic analog called an equivalent circuit consisting of resistors and capacitors in specific arrangements. This equivalent circuit parallels the impedance behavior of the corrosion system during a frequency scan. Values for resistances and capacitances, that can be assigned in the equivalent circuit following a least squares analysis of the data, describe changes occurring on the corroding metal surface and in the protective coatings. A suitable equivalent circuit has been determined which predicts the correct Bode phase and magnitude for the experimental sample. The dc corrosion current density data are related to equivalent circuit element parameters.

VSAERO analysis of structurally decoupled tip planforms for a semispan wing

A numerical analysis has been conducted with the three-dimensional panel code VSAERO for two interacting lifting surfaces that are separated in the spanwise direction by a narrow gap, with the angle of attack of the outboard section being set independently of the inboard section, as in the 'free tip' rotor blade system proposed for helicopters. Computed values of tip surface lift and pitching moment coefficients are correlated with experimental data to determine the most suitable method for modeling the gap region between the surfaces. It is shown that the induced drag of the tip surface is reduced for negative incidence angles relative to the inboard section.

NASA's new technology reporting system: A review and future prospects

A systematic effort is made to describe how NASA's new technology reporting system operates today, and how that system might be enhanced. The system is documented in terms of organization, operational practices, and other program benefits. Identified and assessed are incentives or disincentives to reporting, program management, program follow through, and the feasibility of various means for improving the general process. NASA has the only system in the Federal Government for capturing and disseminating new technology developed under its sponsorship of research and development. This system can be improved in many ways, some of which require additional resources and/or more senior management attention, but many of which can be instituted within the authority of the leadership of the Technology Utilization program. The suggested options and actions presented are mutually compatible. Any single action will contribute to improving the process. However, the first and most important step is undoubtedly to gain senior management's attention to the central role played by a vigorous new technology reporting system in the success and value of NASA's broader technology utilization and technology transfer activities.

Preliminary experimental results of gas recycling subsystems except carbon dioxide concentration

Oxygen concentration and separation is an essential factor for air recycling in a controlled ecological life support system (CELSS). Furthermore, if the value of the plant assimilatory quotient is not coincident with that of the animal respiratory quotient, the recovery of oxygen from the concentrated CO2 through chemical methods will become necessary to balance the gas contents in a CELSS. Therefore, oxygen concentration and separation equipment using Salcomine and O2 recovery equipment, such as Sabatier and Bosch reactors, were experimentally developed and tested.

Initial adhesive screening of novel polyamide-imides and their copolymers

Continued interest by the research community in thermally stable, tough, high temperature adhesives has resulted in the investigation by Langley Research Center of two linear aromatic polyamide-imide (PAI) homopolymers and two linear aromatic PAI copolymers. The homopolymers were made with either 3,3'=DABA or 4,4'-DABA and BTDA. The two polymers were prepared with a monomer ratio of 0.75 DABP:0.25 DABA:1.00 BTDA. These aromatic PAIs possess high thermal stability because of intermolecular hydrogen bonding and chain stiffness. Lap shear strength (LSS) was the main criteria used to evaluate the polymers as adhesives. LSS of bonded Ti-6Al-4V was determined at room temperature (RT), 177, 204 and 232 C. The glass transition temperature and the type of bond failure were also determined. The best LSS values of the four adhesive systems investigated were obtained with the PAI copolymer identified in the report as LARC-TPI (25 percent 3,3'-DABA); however, it did not produce LSSs nearly as high as LARC-TPI. The poor flow properties observed appear to be due to a combination of high molecular weight and the increased interchain electronic interactions associated with the amide group.

Strain measurement technique for elevated temperature tensile and creep testing of foil-gage metals

This paper describes a strain measurement technique suitable for elevated-temperature tensile and creep testing of foil-gage metals, using a modified commonly available mechanical extensometer in conjunction with a displacement transducer. The extensometer was modified by attaching to it a counterbalance (to reduce the effect of the extensometer weight on the total maximum test load) and by incorporating a conical tip/flat-edge design (to minimize induced stresses in the specimen resulting from extensometer attachment). Creep tests were performed on 0.102-mm-thick specimens of Ti-6Al-4V at temperatures of 427 and 538 C, at nominal applied stresses of 310.3 and 172.4 MPa, respectively. Examination of the resulting creep curves suggested that the strain measurement system provided actual creep strain values with good accuracy.

Control of the induced microgravity environment of the Man Tended Free Flyer (MTFF)

Induced disturbance sources have been identified on board the Man Tended Free Flyer (MTFF). Vibration responses at sensitive payload/spacecraft interfaces have been predicted by the application of an empirically found spacecraft dynamic transfer function. Vibrations from fluid loops (Freon, water) and of reaction wheels are assessed to be the main contributors to the induced microgravity environment. The expected payload acceleration response amplitudes presented here are more than one hundred times higher than the admissible values given by the MTFF system requirement, not considering the structural striction-friction effects which could be avoided by appropriate design. Real responses will be significantly lower because the derivation of excitation and transmission functions are based on worst case assumptions. The results indicate that future activities must be concentrated on equipment design improvement and the implementation of vibration reduction along the disturbance transmission path. The activities must be accompanied by early equipment and assembly development tests and transmissibility measurements with the integrated spacecraft engineering and structural models in order to improve the accuracy of payload response predictions.

An electrochemical study of corrosion protection by primer-topcoat systems on 4130 steel with ac impedance and dc methods

To investigate metal surface corrosion and the breakdown of metal protective coatings, the ac impedance method is applied to six systems of primer coated and primer topcoated 4130 steel. Two primers were used: a zinc-rich epoxy primer and a red lead oxide epoxy primer. The epoxy-polyamine topcoat was used in four of the systems. The EG and G-PARC Model 368 ac impedance measurement system, along with dc measurements with the same system using the polarization resistance method, were used to monitor changing properties of coated 4230 steel disks immersed in 3.5 percent NaCl solutions buffered at pH 5.4 over periods of 40 to 60 days. The corrosion system can be represented by an electronic analog called an equivalent circuit consisting of resistors and capacitors in specific arrangements. This equivalent circuit parallels the impedance behavior of the corrosion system during a frequency scan. Values for the resistors and capacitors, that can be assigned in the equivalent circuit following a least-squares analysis of the data, describe changes that occur on the corroding metal surface and in the protective coatings. Two equivalent circuits have been determined that predict the correct Bode phase and magnitude of the experimental sample at different immersion times. The dc corrosion current density data are related to equivalent circuit element parameters. Methods for determining corrosion rate with ac impedance parameters are verified by the dc method.

Influence of impeller shroud forces on turbopump rotor dynamics

The shrouded-impeller leakage path forces calculated by Childs (1987) have been analyzed to answer two questions. First, because of certain characteristics of the results of Childs, the forces could not be modeled with traditional approaches. Therefore, an approach has been devised to include the forces in conventional rotordynamic analyses. The forces were approximated by traditional stiffness, damping and inertia coefficients with the addition of whirl-frequency-dependent direct and cross-coupled stiffness terms. The forces were found to be well-modeled with this approach. Finally, the effect these forces had on a simple rotor-bearing system was analyzed, and, therefore, they, in addition to seal forces, were applied to a Jeffcott rotor. The traditional methods of dynamic system analysis were modified to incorporate the impeller forces and yielded results for the eigenproblem, frequency response, critical speed, transient response and an iterative technique for finding the frequency of free vibration as well as system stability. All results lead to the conclusion that the forces have little influence on natural frequency but can have appreciable effects on system stability. Specifically, at higher values of fluid swirl at the leakage path entrance, relative stability is reduced. The only unexpected response characteristics that occurred are attributed to the nonlinearity of the model.

Testing general relativity with Landers on the Martian satellite Phobos

A planned experiment to obtain range and Doppler data with the Phobos 2 Lander on the surface of the Martian satellite Phobos is described. With the successful insertion on January 29, 1989 of Phobos 2 into Mars orbit, it is anticipated that the Lander will be placed on the surface of Phobos in April 1989. Depending on the longevity of the Lander, range and Doppler data for a period of from one to several years are expected. Because these data are of value in performing solar-system tests of general relativity, the current accuracy of the relevant relativity tests using Deep Space Network data from the Mariner-9 orbiter of Mars in 1971 and from the Viking Landers in 1976-1982 is reviewed. The expected improvement from data anticipated during the Phobos 2 Lander Mission is also discussed; most important will be an improved sensitivity to any time variation in the gravitational 'constant' as measured in atomic units.

Gravitational radiation from the Galaxy

The spectral flux of gravitational radiation incident on earth from the Galactic W UMa binaries, unevolved binaries, cataclysmic binaries, neutron star binaries, black hole-neutron star binaries, and close white dwarf binary (CWDB) systems is calculated. The peak values for the strain amplitude hv produced by the binaries are: log hv = -17.0/sq rt Hz at log v = -4.40 Hz for W UMa's; log hv = -16.5/sq rt Hz at log v = -5.50 Hz for unevolved binaries; log hv = -18.2/sq rt Hz at log v = -5.15 Hz for neutron star binaries; log hv = -17.0/sq rt Hz at log v = -4.7 Hz for black hole-neutron star binaries; log hv = -18.0 /sq rt Hz at log v = -4.10 Hz for cataclysmic binaries, and log hv = -27.0/sq rt Hz at log v = -4.0 Hz for CWDBs. The gravitational flux at ultralow frequencies is emitted mainly by unevolved binaries. The integrated flux incident on earth is about 2.4 x 10 to the -9th ergs/sq cm/s.

Dynamic Analysis and Control of Lightweight Manipulators with Flexible Parallel Link Mechanisms

The objective is the theoretical analysis and the experimental verification of dynamics and control of a two link flexible manipulator with a flexible parallel link mechanism. Nonlinear equations of motion of the lightweight manipulator are derived by the Lagrangian method in symbolic form to better understand the structure of the dynamic model. The resulting equation of motion have a structure which is useful to reduce the number of terms calculated, to check correctness, or to extend the model to higher order. A manipulator with a flexible parallel link mechanism is a constrained dynamic system whose equations are sensitive to numerical integration error. This constrained system is solved using singular value decomposition of the constraint Jacobian matrix. Elastic motion is expressed by the assumed mode method. Mode shape functions of each link are chosen using the load interfaced component mode synthesis. The discrepancies between the analytical model and the experiment are explained using a simplified and a detailed finite element model.

Magnetic field draping at the low-latitude magnetopause

Magnetohydrodynamic simulations are used to investigate the structure of the low-latitude magnetopause for interplanetary magnetic field conditions with a dominant southward component. The structure is self-consistently calculated as an initial-value problem in which the system is allowed to evolve into a quasi-steady state. All components of the 3D velocity and magnetic field as well as compressibility, resistivity, and viscosity are included in the 2D calculation. The simulation model shows that magnetic field draping can occur at the magnetopause boundary when magnetic merging takes place in the presence of a tangential shear flow. For 'normal' (positive Bx) draping, the higher-latitude portion of the field lines are curved toward the sun on the magnetospheric side of the magnetopause and away from the sun on the magnetosheath side. The thickness of the normal draping structure scales with the viscosity. The field-aligned current system that accompanies normal magnetic draping is consistent with the sense of the region 1 currents that flow into the dayside ionosphere.

The structural and electrical properties of low-resistance Ni contacts to InP

We have investigated the electrical and metallurgical behavior of the Ni-InP contact system. Specific contact resistivity (Rc) values in the low 10 exp -7 Omega-sq cm range are achieved with Ni-only contacts on n-InP by sintering at 400 C for several minutes. The postsinter contact metallization consists of three layers, arranged in the sequence: InP/Ni3P/Ni2P/In. Extended sintering (40 min) at 400 C brings about a rise in Rc to the 10 exp -4 Omega-sq cm range. After extended sintering, the contact metallization is found to consist of only two layers, arranged in the sequence: InP/Ni2P/In. Based on the correlation between low Rc and the presence of Ni3P at the metal-InP interface, it is suggested that the presence of Ni3P is the cause of the low Rc values. We show that the sintering schedule used to achieve low values of Rc is accompanied by substantial metal-InP interdiffusion that results in severe device degradation.
