New design is proposed for ferrofluidic solenoid with low magnetic flux leakage. Solenoid consists of a coil centered within a football-shaped elastomeric capsule filled with a ferromagnetic fluid. Fluid replaces the solid, movable core of conventional solenoids, and elastomeric capsule acts as return spring.
Design of thrust balancer minimizes leakage bypass and obviates need for conventional thrust balancer. System allows operation at low flow rates and high thrust capacity at cryogenic temperatures and high pressures.
Compressor performance was mapped during the Brayton cycle power system testing. The range of testing included three shaft speeds: the design speed of 36,000 rpm, 10 percent overspeed (39,600 rpm), and 10 percent underspeed (32,400 rpm). A range of compressor inlet temperatures from 60 F to 120 F and discharge pressures from 20 to 45 psia were included. The effects of turbine inlet temperatures (from 1200 F to 1600 F) on the compressor were also studied. The data presented include plots of weight flow, compressor pressure ratio, efficiency, and temperature-rise ratio.
Attempt to determine if peripheral visual response time (RT) could be used as a reliable advanced predictor of +G sub z-related blackout or grayout. The relatively high luminance of the peripheral stimuli used in the experiments may account for the finding that peripheral RT was not sensitive to impending blackout or grayout. The relatively consistent mean RTs within subjects across test days in bed is probably due to the relatively constant response characteristics of the retina and to the high repeatability of the stimuli.

Core alleviates many limitations of conventional nacelle construction methods. Radical core, made of metals or nonmetals, is fabricated either by joining nodes and then expanding, or by performing each layer and then joining nodes. Core may also be produced from ribbons or strips with joined nodes or ribbons oriented in longitudinal planes.

Bearings reduce friction by allowing air of vacuum gaps between rotating members through properly-applied magnetic fields. Advantages: There is no physical contact between rotor and support structure; bearings operate directly in vacuum environment without lubrication; and there is unlimited operating lifetime, independent of speed.
Growing planetesimals and a range of drag laws depending on the Reynolds number and on the ratio of particle size to mean free path are considered. Particles spiral in the direction of positive gradient, thus being concentrated toward toroidal concentrations of gas. The effect increases with decreasing rates of particle growth, i.e., with increasing time scales of planet formation by accretion. In the outer regions, where evidence suggests that comets were formed and Uranus and Neptune were so accumulated, the effect of the pressure gradient is to clear the forming comets from those regions. The large mass of Neptune may have developed because of this effect, perhaps Neptune's solar distance was reduced from Bode's law, and perhaps no comet belt exists beyond Neptune. In the asteroid belt, on a slow time scale, the effect may have spiraled planetesimals toward Mars and Jupiter, thus contributing to the lack of planet formation in this region.
Heat-transfer was investigated on an air-cooled turbine vane made from photoetched laminates that were joined by diffusion bonding. Data from the investigation were compared with data of an impingement-, convection-, and film-cooled vane and a full-coverage film-cooled vane, and data of a transpiration-cooled vane.
