AWP: NASA's Aerosol Wind Profiler Coherent Doppler Wind Lidar

A new airborne coherent Doppler Wind Lidar (DWL) instrument has been implemented leveraging NASA's development of the 2-micron Wind-Space Pathfinder (Wind-SP) lidar transceiver. A technology development project, Wind-SP refined and demonstrated numerous components required for a coherent-detection space wind lidar instrument. Aerosol Wind Profiler (AWP) transitioned this transceiver into an airborne wind lidar capable of providing full 3-D wind vector retrievals. AWP operates with laser pulse energy and repetition rate combination required for high spatial and vertical resolution wind profiling from space. Operation from aircraft platforms will yield very strong signal return required for detailed process studies at <2km spatial and <100m vertical resolution under most conditions. AWP will serve as NASA’s wind calibration and validation instrument for future space-based wind observations over the coming decades, while also providing data supporting space wind lidar simulation studies. The AWP instrument is introduced and preliminary results from recent AWP demonstration flights are presented.

A Comparison of Impedance Eduction Test Rigs with Different Flow Profiles

The experimental characterization of acoustic liners applied for turbofan engines has been in the spotlight of the community for the last few decades. In general, such characterization is done by measurements of the liner acoustic impedance using different techniques in conditions as close as possible to those encountered in turbofan engines. Although a great amount of work has been published related to these techniques, few comparisons between different experimental setups using identical samples are available. The goal of the present study is to provide a comparison between educed acoustic impedances for two nominally identical liner samples in theUFSC Impedance Test Rig and the NASA Langley Research Center Grazing Flow ImpedanceTube (GFIT). Due to the geometrical differences between the test rigs, it is possible to consider the effect of different grazing flow profiles on the educed impedance. Impedance measurements between the two facilities show similar results in absence of grazing flow, while different ones when the grazing flow is present. Results are presented with both test rigs targeted to two different conditions: (i) same centerline Mach number and; (ii) same average Mach number. Both comparisons suggest a higher acoustic resistance obtained with the UFSC Impedance TestRig. A comparison using semi-empirical predictive models was also conducted. The results suggest that the main source for the observed difference is the grazing flow profile, represented by its boundary layer displacement thickness.

X-57 Cruise Motor and High-Lift Motor Mission Profile Power Analysis

The X-57 Mission Profile Power Analysis was developed to evaluate the X-57 traction battery’s performance against Mod II, Mod III and Mod IV generic flight mission profiles. Traction battery system performance acceptance testing requirements were developed using data generated by this analysis. This analysis was also used to define the maximum power requirements for the traction system components.

Homogenized Ground-Based and Profile Ozone Datasets From the TOAR-II/HEGIFTOM Project: Methods and Station Trends

Within the framework of the second phase of the Tropospheric Ozone Assessment Report (TOAR-II), it was recognized that an essential first step for deriving accurate trends from the ground-based networks that monitor ozone in the free troposphere is putting the measurements on the same basis with respect to absolute references and processing methods. The relevant procedures are referred to as “harmonization” or “homogenization”. The TOAR II working group, “HEGIFTOM” (Harmonization and Evaluation of Ground-based Instruments for Free-Tropospheric Ozone Measurements), has carried out harmonization for five types of network (Figure below) instruments (mid-1990s to 2020): ozonesondes, commercial aircraft IAGOS landing/takeoff profiles, Fourier-Transform Infrared spectrometer (FTIR), tropospheric Lidar, and Brewer/Dobson Umkehr. First, we summarize the homogenization effort for each network that provides new quality-assessed ozone profile or segment (partial column) data sets, including uncertainty estimates and quality flags. Second, with the HEGIFTOM datasets forming the basis for a global assessment of tropospheric ozone column trends, results derived with various trend detection algorithms will be presented. The ultimate goal is evaluation of the consistency of the calculated trends among different techniques at selected stations and/or regions.

Fast, Space Qualified 3000 V Modulator for a Cloud Profiling Radar

Cloudsat's Cloud Profiling Radar (CPR) delivers a 2 kW of RF pulse using an extended Interaction Klystron (EIK). 'To drive such an EIK, it was necessary to develop a -16.3 kV High Voltage Power Supply (HVPS) and a Focus Electrode Modulator (FEM), floating at Cathode potential to turn the EIK's Beam on and off -45V to -3kV with respect to the Cathode. This paper describes the design approach for the FEM and its performance at EM and Flight Configuration. In author's opinion it a simple but universal approach which allow designer to achieve greater flexibility and freedom in designing high swinging space qualifiable FEM.
