CO and CS in the Orion Nebula

The reported observations were made with an 11-m radio telescope. The CO map considered has a peak near the position of the infrared continuum source. There is little correlation between the CO contours and any optical structure. The CO contours show a pronounced north-south orientation. CS was observed as a representative example of a stable molecule with a higher dipole moment than CO. Questions regarding the structure of Orion A are discussed, giving attention to various models.

Heterogeneities in the solar nebula

Oxygen isotopic compositions of the high-temperatue phases in carbonaceous chondrites define a mixing line with an O-16 rich component and show little superimposed chemical isotope fractionation. Within a single inclusion in Allende, variations of delta O-18 and delta O-17 of 39% are found. The ordinary chondrites are slightly displaced from the terrestrial fractionation trend, implying that at least 0.2% of the oxygen in terrestrial rocks was derived from the O-16 rich component.

The 1973 solar occultation of the Crab Nebula pulsar

The mean electron density of the solar corona was determined by measuring the dispersion of radiofrequency pulses from pulsar NP 0532 during the June 1973 solar occultation. Trends continued which were noticed in 1971 as solar activity declined. Model fitting results suggest that the corona continued to become even more concentrated toward the equator in 1973 than in 1971. The number density of electrons in most regions decreased. The best model of the distribution of corona electrons is suggested to be one with zero density at the poles. K-corona isophotes and contours of equal path-integrated density are presented for several models. Electron density versus date and position in the corona are tabulated. It is seen that there is no simple relationship between the onset of major solar activity and density or scattering enhancements.

High-velocity gas in the Orion infrared nebula

Sensitive observations of carbon monoxide toward the Kleinmann-Low (KL) infrared nebular in Orion have revealed the presence of low-level emission extending over a radial velocity range of at least 150 km/s. The high-velocity emission appears to be localized in a region not exceeding about 1 arcmin in diameter centered on KL. The high-velocity gas is probably associated with pre-rather than post-main-sequence object(s). However, the intensity of line radiation at these high velocities is not easily explained with simple models of mass outflow, gravitational collapse, or rotation.

Emission nebulae in the Magellanic Clouds. I - The H II regions

A review of optical and radio studies of the H II regions in the Magellanic Clouds is presented. Recent studies are emphasized, particularly optical studies of the kinematics, spectra, and chemical composition. The implications of the studies for the understanding of the evolution of stars and galaxies in general, and the Magellanic Clouds in particular, are noted. Suggestions for future work are also given.

Observations of the unidentified 3.3 micron emission feature in nebulae

Spectrophotometric observations from 2.1 to 4.1 microns of a variety of objects exhibiting the 3.3-micron emission feature (first detected in NGC 7027) are reported. The characteristics of the feature, the various environments in which it is found, and possible emission mechanisms are discussed in light of all the available observations of the feature to date. A resonance feature in solids is the most probable emission mechanism; however, no satisfactory identification has yet been made on the basis of infrared spectroscopy of terrestrial materials.
