This data file contains retrievals of cloud-effective-radius and cloud-droplet-number-concentration for low clouds based on the Dong et al. 1998 retrieval technique for the MICRE campaign. The retrieval is based on observed downwelling broadband SW fluxes and microwave-radiometer-retrieved-liquid-water-path averaged on a 5 minute time scale (mean when low cloud is present). Details on the algorithm and analysis of results are given in Tansey et al. 2024 (submitted DOI: 10.22541/essoar.173482310.03809503/v1). The data is limited to the period 20160410 to 20160612 AND 20170103 to 20170214 during which time good quality microwave-radiometer measurements are available.

Talk #1: Behavioral Generative Agents for Energy Operations Presenter: Dr. Cong Chen (Thayer School of Engineering, Dartmouth College) Abstract: Accurately modeling consumer behavior in energy operations remains challenging due to inherent uncertainties, behavioral complexities, and limited empirical data. This talk introduces a novel approach leveraging generative agents--artificial agents powered by large language models--to realistically simulate customer decision-making in dynamic energy operations. Talk #2: Simulating multiple human perspectives in socio-ecological systems using large language models Presenter: Dr. Yongchao Zeng (Institute of Meteorology and Climate Research, Atmospheric Environmental Research (IMK-IFU) of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany) Abstract: Understanding socio-ecological systems requires insights from diverse stakeholder perspectives. This talk describes a novel simulation system called HoPeS (Human-oriented Perspective Shifting). HoPeS enables model users to not only explore simulated socio-ecological systems (SESs) from a third-person observer's perspective but also take any of the simulated stakeholder roles, like playing an RPG game. By shifting multiple perspectives, model users can reflect and integrate the situated knowledge learned through the participatory simulation, approximating a more holistic and less biased understanding of SESs. Accumulative weights program

Program provides capability of assessing weight above given structural station planes for inert and variable masses for any selected loading condition. Output is produced that yeilds weight data concentrated on and/or cantilevered from stations along Saturn 5 vehicle's verticle axis. Input data availability limits program's function to vertical structures.

Fault tolerant data management system

Described in detail are: (1) results obtained in modifying the onboard data management system software to a multiprocessor fault tolerant system; (2) a functional description of the prototype buffer I/O units; (3) description of modification to the ACADC and stimuli generating unit of the DTS; and (4) summaries and conclusions on techniques implemented in the rack and prototype buffers. Also documented is the work done in investigating techniques of high speed (5 Mbps) digital data transmission in the data bus environment. The application considered is a multiport data bus operating with the following constraints: no preferred stations; random bus access by all stations; all stations equally likely to source or sink data; no limit to the number of stations along the bus; no branching of the bus; and no restriction on station placement along the bus.

Enhanced indirect optical absorption in AlAs and GaP.

Measurement and analysis of indirect interband optical absorption in GaP. Deviations from a simple indirect absorption law are shown to be consistent with those given by a model which takes into account both the variation of the energy denominators with photon energy and indirect absorption to higher-energy conduction-band valleys. The analysis of the GaP data indicates that such an analysis on data of limited absorption-constant range can provide reasonably accurate values of the direct band gap. The value of the direct band gap best fitting this model for AlAs at 6 K is 3.13 eV. In GaP and AlAs there is evidence of a higher set of extrema giving rise to an additional indirect absorption component 0.34 and 0.20 eV, respectively, above that due to the lowest-energy conduction-band minima. The strength of the absorption due to these higher-energy valleys indicates that they contain states of X sub 3 symmetry.

The octahedral shear strain theory and its relation to biaxial cumulative fatigue damage.

The octahedral shear strain range concept is used in analyzing multiaxial fatigue damage. Limited test data from a two-step loading sequence show that the loading effect is still pronounced in the multiaxial case and that the relation between damage and cycle ratio is nonlinear. Among uniaxial cumulative damage concepts, the modified multiaxial double linear damage rule seems to show the most favorable experimental results.

Determination of contamination character of materials in space technology testing

The contamination character of selected materials used in space technology testing is presented. Many of these materials contain components that become volatile in a space environment. Most previous data were limited to weight loss or vapor pressure. However, these parameters are not necessarily a direct measure of the contamination character of these materials. Selected materials were exposed to a thermal-vacuum environment, and the degree of contamination was measured by collecting the outgases from these materials on a cold test mirror surface. The degradation of reflectivity of the mirror was measured over a spectral range from 1100 A to 2.5 microns. Half the mirror's surface was also exposed to UV irradiation to determine its effects on the contaminative character of the depositing outgases. The amount of deposit per unit area was measured by microbalances mounted near the mirror; the sensor of one microbalance was UV irradiated. A quadrupole mass spectrometer was used to determine the composition of the outgases.

Effects of vane-induced rotation on diffuser flow distortion in an axisymmetric mixed-compression inlet

An investigation of vane-induced flow rotation to modify distorted steady-state total-pressure patterns in the subsonic diffuser of a supersonic mixed-compression inlet was conducted. Radial static-pressure gradients generated by the rotation was the mechanism used to modify the total-pressure distributions. Significant redistribution of circumferential distortion patterns into more compatible radial patterns was realized, but flow problems near the duct walls reduced the general effectiveness of the technique. Total-pressure losses associated with the swirl vanes were slight. Limited turbulence data indicated that vane istallation resulted in reduced turbulence levels.

Approximate thermochemical tables for some C-H and C-H-O species

Approximate thermochemical tables are presented for some C-H and C-H-O species and for some ionized species, supplementing the JANAF Thermochemical Tables for application to finite-chemical-kinetics calculations. The approximate tables were prepared by interpolation and extrapolation of limited available data, especially by interpolations over chemical families of species. Original estimations have been smoothed by use of a modification for the CDC-6600 computer of the Lewis Research Center PACl Program which was originally prepared for the IBM-7094 computer Summary graphs for various families show reasonably consistent curvefit values, anchored by properties of existing species in the JANAF tables.

A provisional analysis of two-dimensional turbulent mixing with variable density

A predictive method for the titled flows based on the Prandtl energy method was developed and assessed by comparing predicted results with experimental results. For constant-density flows, both gross properties such as spreading rate and maximum turbulent kinetic energy and detailed properties such as mean shear stress distributions are shown to be well predicted. For variable-density flows, considerable attention is devoted to the inclusion in the analysis of the added effect of pressure fluctuations and of the variation in the several extant empirical parameters on the turbulent kinetic energy. It is found that a variation with Mach number of the characteristic Reynolds number for turbulent transport is needed to account for the observed decrease in spreading rate. The predictions which result from these considerations are compared with the limited experimental data presently available for the two crucial cases: compressible adiabatic mixing and low-speed isothermal mixing of two dissimilar gases.

Prediction of fluctuating pressure environments associated with plume-induced separated flow fields

The separated flow environment induced by underexpanded rocket plumes during boost phase of rocket vehicles has been investigated. A simple semi-empirical model for predicting the extent of separation was developed. This model offers considerable computational economy as compared to other schemes reported in the literature, and has been shown to be in good agreement with limited flight data. The unsteady pressure field in plume-induced separated regions was investigated. It was found that fluctuations differed from those for a rigid flare only at low frequencies. The major difference between plume-induced separation and flare-induced separation was shown to be an increase in shock oscillation distance for the plume case. The prediction schemes were applied to PRR shuttle launch configuration. It was found that fluctuating pressures from plume-induced separation are not as severe as for other fluctuating environments at the critical flight condition of maximum dynamic pressure.

Monitoring and control of fuel-cell system by digital computer

The computer was programmed to handle data, perform limit checks, control normal operation, take corrective actions, and initiate shutdown for a fuel-cell system. The system was operated under computer control for periods up to 30 hr. The adequacy of the programming and interfacing techniques used was verified.

Analysis of high aspect ratio jet flap wings of arbitrary geometry.

Paper presents a design technique for rapidly computing lift, induced drag, and spanwise loading of unswept jet flap wings of arbitrary thickness, chord, twist, blowing, and jet angle, including discontinuities. Linear theory is used, extending Spence's method for elliptically loaded jet flap wings. Curves for uniformly blown rectangular wings are presented for direct performance estimation. Arbitrary planforms require a simple computer program. Method of reducing wing to equivalent stretched, twisted, unblown planform for hand calculation is also given. Results correlate with limited existing data, and show lifting line theory is reasonable down to aspect ratios of 5.

Method for estimating fracture strength of specially orthotropic composite laminates.

A method is presented for estimating the stress intensity factor characteristic of crack extension in a specially orthotropic advanced fiber composite laminate, based on the elastic properties and ultimate principal strengths of a lamina, the laminate construction, and the experimentally determined value of the characteristic stress intensity factor of an arbitrary angle-plied, midplane symmetric laminate. A comparison of the results obtained from this method with limited experimental data for graphite/epoxy laminates indicates that the method is quite accurate for this particular material system. The predictive method is also used, in conjunction with experimental data, to estimate the size of a damage zone surrounding the crack tip.
