Implementation of ISEE-3 trajectory control

Control of the trajectory and attitude for the International Sun-Earth Explorer-3 (ISEE-3) spacecraft is performed using an onboard hydrazine propulsion system. This paper describes the spacecraft hardware and operational limitations that were considered in the planning, execution, and evaluation of all ISEE-3 maneuvers performed to date. Propulsion system performance and spacecraft dynamics models as implemented in the maneuver support computer software are described. Examples are presented that show how maneuver goals are achieved while satisfying mission orbit and attitude constraints. Procedures used in the development of maneuver plans are detailed for the second midcourse correction maneuver which typifies maneuver operations in general.

Implementing a bubble memory hierarchy system

This paper reports on implementation of a magnetic bubble memory in a two-level hierarchial system. The hierarchy used a major-minor loop device and RAM under microprocessor control. Dynamic memory addressing, dual bus primary memory, and hardware data modification detection are incorporated in the system to minimize access time. It is the objective of the system to incorporate the advantages of bipolar memory with that of bubble domain memory to provide a smart, optimal memory system which is easy to interface and independent of user's system.

Issues in the digital implementation of control compensators

Techniques developed for the finite-precision implementation of digital filters were used, adapted, and extended for digital feedback compensators, with particular emphasis on steady state, linear-quadratic-Gaussian compensators. Topics covered include: (1) the linear-quadratic-Gaussian problem; (2) compensator structures; (3) architectural issues: serialism, parallelism, and pipelining; (4) finite wordlength effects: quantization noise, quantizing the coefficients, and limit cycles; and (5) the optimization of structures.

Implementation of a trapezoidal ring element in NASTRAN for elastic-plastic analysis

The explicit expressions for an elastic-plastic trapezoidal ring element are presented and implemented in NASTRAN computer program. The material is assumed to obey the von Mises' yield criterion, isotropic hardening rule and the Prandtl-Reuss flow relations. For the purpose of demonstration, two elastic-plastic problems are solved and compared with previous results. The first is a plane-strain tube under uniform internal pressure and the second, a finite-length tube loaded over part of its inner surface. A very good agreement was found in both test problems.

Implementation of NASTRAN on the IBM/370 CMS operating system

The NASA Structural Analysis (NASTRAN) computer program is operational on the IBM 360/370 series computers. While execution of NASTRAN has been described and implemented under the virtual storage operating systems of the IBM 370 models, the IBM 370/168 computer can also operate in a time-sharing mode under the virtual machine operating system using the Conversational Monitor System (CMS) subset. The changes required to make NASTRAN operational under the CMS operating system are described.

Correlator computer interface and module implementation: Mark 3 processor

Two hardware aspects of the Mark 3 correlator are briefly described. The first area concerns the choice of interface to the controlling minicomputer and the second area concerns the implementation of the correlator module. Multiple computer automated measurement and control (CAMAC) modules and a single large CAMAC module were considered as possible packaging forms for the correlator. The large CAMAC module approach was chosen because of the difficulty in partitioning the correlator with minimum interconnections, the fabrication economy of a single large planar assembly, and the desire to minimize the number of modules.

Remote sensing inputs to National Model Implementation Program for water resources quality improvement

The Lake Herman watershed in southeastern South Dakota has been selected as one of seven water resources systems in the United States for involvement in the National Model Implementation Program (MIP). MIP is a pilot program initiated to illustrate the effectiveness of existing water resources quality improvement programs. The Remote Sensing Institute (RSI) at South Dakota State University has produced a computerized geographic information system for the Lake Herman watershed. All components necessary for the monitoring and evaluation process were included in the data base. The computerized data were used to produce thematic maps and tabular data for the land cover and soil classes within the watershed. These data are being utilized operationally by SCS resource personnel for planning and management purposes.

The Seasat scanning multichannel microwave radiometer /SMMR/: Antenna pattern corrections - Development and implementation

The antenna temperatures measured by the Seasat scanning multichannel microwave radiometer (SMMR) differ from the true brightness temperatures of the observed scene due to antenna pattern effects, principally from antenna sidelobe contributions and cross-polarization coupling. To provide accurate brightness temperatures convenient for geophysical parameter retrievals the antenna temperatures are processed through a series of stages, collectively known as the antenna pattern correction (APC) algorithm. A description of the development and implementation of the APC algorithm is given, along with an error analysis of the resulting brightness temperatures.

Formulation and implementation of a practical algorithm for parameter estimation with process and measurement noise

A new formulation is proposed for the problem of parameter estimation of dynamic systems with both process and measurement noise. The formulation gives estimates that are maximum likelihood asymptotically in time. The means used to overcome the difficulties encountered by previous formulations are discussed. It is then shown how the proposed formulation can be efficiently implemented in a computer program. A computer program using the proposed formulation is available in a form suitable for routine application. Examples with simulated and real data are given to illustrate that the program works well.

Implementing the UCSD PASCAL system on the MODCOMP computer

The implementation of an interactive software development system (UCSD PASCAL) on the MODCOMP computer is discussed. The development of an interpreter for the MODCOMP II and the MODCOMP IV computers, written in MODCOMP II assembly language, is described. The complete Pascal programming system was run successfully on a MODCOMP II and MODCOMP IV under both the MAX II/III and MAX IV operating systems. The source code for an 8080 microcomputer version of the interpreter was used as the design for the MODCOMP interpreter. A mapping of the functions within the 8080 interpreter into MODCOMP II assembly language was the method used to code the interpreter.

As-Built documentation of programs to implement the Robertson and Doraiswamy/Thompson models

The software which implements two spring wheat phenology models is described. The main program routines for the Doraiswamy/Thompson crop phenology model and the basic Robertson crop phenology model are DTMAIN and BRMAIN. These routines read meteorological data files and coefficient files, accept the planting date information and other information from the user, and initiate processing. Daily processing for the basic Robertson program consists only of calculation of the basic Robertson increment of crop development. Additional processing in the Doraiswamy/Thompson program includes the calculation of a moisture stress index and correction of the basic increment of development. Output for both consists of listings of the daily results.

The implementation and use of Ada on distributed systems with high reliability requirements

The use and implementation of Ada in distributed environments in which the hardware components are assumed to be unreliable is investigated. The possibility that a distributed system can be programmed entirely in Ada so that the individual tasks of the system are unconcerned with which processor they are executing on, and that failures can occur in the underlying hardware is considered. The reduced cost of computer hardware and the advantages of distributed processing (for example, increased reliability through redundancy and greater flexibility) indicate that many aerospace computer systems can be distributed. The use of Ada and distributed systems is a good combination for aerospace embedded systems.

CONSCAN implementation for Antenna Control Assembly

The specifics of the CONSCAN, including calibration, signal cleanup, and system protection are presented. The CONSCAN was previously recommended for implementation in the antenna control assembly. Equations for programming the algorithms are provided. The described treatment is designed to lead to developing K-band. The recommended techniques to be employed in conjunction with CONSCAN are summarized: (1) for initial acquisition, employ stepped spiral search; (2) employ continued and incessant testing of signals to verify: in-lock, reasonable in level, and within limits; (3) use FFT for signal processing if feasible, as it provides more tests and insight into existence of glitches and spurious content of the input signal level.
