Events leading to the development of the San Marco Equatorial Range are presented. Included are background information leading to the cooperative space program between the United States and Italy, conceptual planning, training activities, equipment design and fabrication, and range utilization. The technical support provided the San Marco Program by Scout Project Office, and other NASA installations is described.
A summary of S-2 Program problems and the solutions that were implemented is presented. The problems occurred during a period starting with the initial design concepts and continuing through the launch of the tenth S-2 flight stage information is from nine separate disciplines: design, facilities, logistics, manufacturing, material, program management, quality assurance, safety, and tests.
The quality control monitoring system, using accounting and quality control data bases, made it possible to perform an in-depth analysis. Results show that the percentage of useable data files for experimenter analysis was 97.7%; only 0.4% of the data sequences supplied to the experimenter exhibited missing data. The 50 percentile probability delay values (referenced to station record data) indicate that the analog tapes arrived within 11 days, the data were digitized within 4.2 weeks, and the experimenter tapes were delivered in 8.95 weeks or less.
A worst case analysis is reported on the safety of time watch movements for triggering explosive packages on the lunar surface in an experiment to investigate physical lunar structural characteristics through induced seismic energy waves. Considered are the combined effects of low pressure, low temperature, lunar gravity, gear train error, and position. Control measures constitute a seal control cavity and design requirements to prevent overbanking in the mainspring torque curve. Thus, the potential hazard is reduced to safety negligible.
