A fast, time-accurate unsteady full potential scheme

The unsteady form of the full potential equation is solved in conservation form by an implicit method based on approximate factorization. At each time level, internal Newton iterations are performed to achieve time accuracy and computational efficiency. A local time linearization procedure is introduced to provide a good initial guess for the Newton iteration. A novel flux-biasing technique is applied to generate proper forms of the artificial viscosity to treat hyperbolic regions with shocks and sonic lines present. The wake is properly modeled by accounting not only for jumps in phi, but also for jumps in higher derivatives of phi, obtained by imposing the density to be continuous across the wake. The far field is modeled using the Riemann invariants to simulate nonreflecting boundary conditions. The resulting unsteady method performs well which, even at low reduced frequency levels of 0.1 or less, requires fewer than 100 time steps per cycle at transonic Mach numbers. The code is fully vectorized for the CRAY-XMP and the VPS-32 computers.

Fast turbulent correlations from phase coherence velocimetry

Flows with coherent structures allow see-free measurements of local velocity and velocity fluctuations. Continuous turbulent velocity histories in ionizing shock waves are obtained at a 10-MHz sampling rate. From this, correlation profiles and frequency spectra are determined which reveal the presence of prominent high-frequency components.

Opening of the magnetic field lines in a fast rotating magnetosphere, with an application to Jupiter

A simple model of a magnetosphere rotating around a rotating Jupiter-like object with a spin-aligned dipolar moment mu is considered. A low-energy plasma is released by inner sources located beyond the corotation radius and is diffused outward through closed lines. The lines form a closed thin equatorial disk, maintaining a quasi-static balance between the centrifugal force and the magnetic tension. Solutions are obtained for the analytical equations characterizing the plasma in the closed region; the structure of the magnetic field outside the disk; and the self-consistent value of the critical radius r sub zero. The analytical solutions are compared to the observed properties of the Jovian magnetosphere, and the results are discussed in detail.

Fast Glazing of Alumina/Silica Tiles

Technique for applying ceramic coating to fibrous silica/alumina insulation tiles prevents cracks and substantially reduces firing time. To reduce thermal stresses in tile being coated, high-temperature, shorttime firing schedule implemented. Such schedule allows coating to mature while substrate remains at relatively low temperature, reducing stress differential between coating and substrate. Technique used to repair tiles with damaged coatings and possibly used in heat-treating objects made of materials having different thermal-expansion coefficients.

Solution of elliptic partial differential equations by fast Poisson solvers using a local relaxation factor. 1: One-step method

An algorithm for solving a large class of two- and three-dimensional nonseparable elliptic partial differential equations (PDE's) is developed and tested. It uses a modified D'Yakanov-Gunn iterative procedure in which the relaxation factor is grid-point dependent. It is easy to implement and applicable to a variety of boundary conditions. It is also computationally efficient, as indicated by the results of numerical comparisons with other established methods. Furthermore, the current algorithm has the advantage of possessing two important properties which the traditional iterative methods lack; that is: (1) the convergence rate is relatively insensitive to grid-cell size and aspect ratio, and (2) the convergence rate can be easily estimated by using the coefficient of the PDE being solved.

A fast-response aspirating probe for measurements of total temperature and pressure in transonic cryogenic wind tunnel

A newly developed, 3-mm-diam, dual hot-wire aspirating probe was used to measure the time-resolved stagnation temperature and pressure in a transonic cryogenic wind tunnel. The probe consists of two coplanar constant temperature hot wires at different overheat ratios operating in a 1.5-mm-diam channel with a choked exit. Thus, the constant Mach number flow by the wires is influenced only by free-stream stagnation temperature and pressure. Diffusion of the free-stream Mach number to a lower value in the channel reduces the dynamic drag on the hot-wire. Frequency response of the present design is dc to 20 kHz. The probe was used to measure the unsteady wake shed from an oscillating airfoil tested in the 0.3-m Transonic Cryogenic Tunnel at NASA-Langley Research Center. The hot-wire lasted for more than ten hours before breaking, proving the ruggedness of the probe and the usefulness of the technique in a high dynamic pressure, transonic cryogenic wind tunnel. Typical data obtained from the experiment are presented after reduction to stagnation pressure and temperature.

Surface effects on phase distributions of a fast-quenched miscibility gap type system - Succinonitrile-water

If a binary homogeneous melt is cooled into an immiscible region, the newly formed second phase will generally have a density different from the parent phase, and will separate readily by sedimentation. Observation of solidification processes in microgravity indicates that outside of sedimentation, at least two other important effets can separate the phases: (1) preferential wetting, and (2) thermal migration of second-phase droplets due to interfacial tension gradients. The latter effect would drive the minority phase along the thermal gradient toward the hottest part (assuming the interfacial tension decreases with increasing temperature), which is usually away from the crucible wall. On the other hand, if the minority phase preferentially wets the crucible, a minority phase layer which thickens as initial solution compositions approach critical, will form adjacent to the solid surface and remain in the coldest region of the ingot. This study presents compelling preliminary evidence that these two effects do exist and that they compete with one another. However, the temperature dependence of preferential wetting below T(c) for the current system of study is, as yet, undetermined. These effects are sensitive to the initial concentration of a hypermonotectic solution cooling through a miscibility gap.

Fast approach for calculating film thicknesses and pressures in elastohydrodynamically lubricated contacts at high loads

The film thicknesses and pressures in elastohydrodynamically lubricated contacts have been calculated for a line contact by using an improved version of Okamura's approach. The new approach allows for lubricant compressibility, the use of Roelands' viscosity, a general mesh (nonconstant step), and accurate calculations of the elastic deformation. The new approach is described, and the effects on film thickness, pressure, and pressure spike of each of the improvements are discussed. Successful runs have been obtained at high pressure (to 4.8 GPa) with low CPU times.

Controller for Fast-Acting Furnaces

Circuit slows responses of certain furnace types. Circuit output actuates external power supply, which furnishes heater power to furnace in response to furnace temperature sensed by thermocouple. Temperaturecontrol circuit suppresses temperature oscillations in rapidly responding laboratory furnaces. Ordinarily, such furnaces difficult to control because temperatures change very rapidly with changes in delivered electric power. Ordinary commercial controllers not designed to handle this kind of response.

Solution of elliptic partial differential equations by fast Poisson solvers using a local relaxation factor. 2: Two-step method

A two-step semidirect procedure is developed to accelerate the one-step procedure described in NASA TP-2529. For a set of constant coefficient model problems, the acceleration factor increases from 1 to 2 as the one-step procedure convergence rate decreases from + infinity to 0. It is also shown numerically that the two-step procedure can substantially accelerate the convergence of the numerical solution of many partial differential equations (PDE's) with variable coefficients.

Design and development of a large diameter high pressure fast acting propulsion valve and valve actuator

The design and development of a large diameter high pressure quick acting propulsion valve and valve actuator is described. The valve is the heart of a major test facility dedicated to conducting full scale performance tests of aircraft landing systems. The valve opens in less than 300 milliseconds releasing a 46-centimeter- (18-in.-) diameter water jet and closes in 300 milliseconds. The four main components of the valve, i.e., valve body, safety shutter, high speed shutter, and pneumatic-hydraulic actuator, are discussed. This valve is unique and may have other aerospace and industrial applications.

A fast data acquisition system for the study of transient events by high repetition rate time-of-flight mass spectrometry

Recent advances in commercially available data acquisition electronics embodying high speed A/D conversion coupled to increased memory storage have now made practical (at least within time intervals of a third of a millisecond or more) the capturing of all of the data generated by a high repetition rate time-of-flight mass spectrometer producing complete spectra every 25 to 35 microseconds. Such a system was assembled and interfaced with a personal computer for control and management of data. The applications are described for recording time-resolved spectra of individual vapor plumes induced from the pulsed-laser heating of material. Each laser pulse triggers the system to generate automatically a 3-dimensional (3-D) presentation of the time-resolved spectra with m/z labeling of the major mass peaks, plus an intensity versus time display of both the laser pulse and the resulting vapor pulse. The software also permits storing of data and its presentation in various additional forms.

A very efficient massively parallel processor (MPP) algorithm is described for performing one important class of Ising spin simulations. Results and physical significance of MPP calculations using the method described is discussed elsewhere. A few comments, however, are made on the problem under study and results so far are reported. Ted Einstein provided guidance in interpreting the initial results and in suggesting calculations to perform.

Solution of elliptic PDEs by fast Poisson solvers using a local relaxation factor

A large class of two- and three-dimensional, nonseparable elliptic partial differential equations (PDEs) is presently solved by means of novel one-step (D'Yakanov-Gunn) and two-step (accelerated one-step) iterative procedures, using a local, discrete Fourier analysis. In addition to being easily implemented and applicable to a variety of boundary conditions, these procedures are found to be computationally efficient on the basis of the results of numerical comparison with other established methods, which lack the present one's: (1) insensitivity to grid cell size and aspect ratio, and (2) ease of convergence rate estimation by means of the coefficient of the PDE being solved. The two-step procedure is numerically demonstrated to outperform the one-step procedure in the case of PDEs with variable coefficients.
