Modal control of the planar motion of a long flexible beam in orbit

Attitude control techniques for the pointing and stabilization of very large, inherently flexible spacecraft systems are investigated. The attitude dynamics and control of a long, homogeneous flexible beam whose center of mass is assumed to follow a circular orbit is analyzed. In this study, first order effects of gravity-gradient are included, whereas external perturbations and related orbital station keeping maneuvers are neglected. A mathematical model which describes the system deflections within the orbital plane has been developed by treating the beam as having a maximum of three discretized mass particles connected by massless, elastic structural elements. The uncontrolled dynamics of this system are simulated and, in addition, the effects of the control devices are considered. The concept of distributed modal control, which provides a means for controlling a system mode independently of all other modes, is examined. The effect of varying the number of modes in the model as well as the number and location of the control devices are also considered.

Interactive aircraft flight control and aeroelastic stabilization

An analytical model has been used to study the problem of integrated control system/structural dynamic design. This model utilizes the traditional typical section lifting surface with a control surface attached in 2-D unsteady incompressible flow. The studies have as their purpose the examination of the use of the location of the elastic axis of the airfoil as a design variable in the search for an actively controlled configuration that has a specified flutter margin. Items of interest include the determination of flutter speed and divergence speed as functions of a nondimensional parameter, a sub c, that measures the location (in semi-chords) of the elastic axis with respect to the airfoil midchord. All other parameters are fixed. The behavior of velocity root locus curves with changes in a sub c is illustrated. Also shown is an example of the use of sensitivity derivatives to reposition poles of the open loop system. The behavior of the actively controlled or closed loop system is also discussed. A set of examples are presented to indicate how the shear center parameter, a sub c, affects the design of the controlled system.

Hybrid Differential Dynamic Programming with Stochastic Search

Differential dynamic programming (DDP) has been demonstrated as a viable approach to low-thrust trajectory optimization, namely with the recent success of NASAs Dawn mission. The Dawn trajectory was designed with the DDP-based Static Dynamic Optimal Control algorithm used in the Mystic software. Another recently developed method, Hybrid Differential Dynamic Programming (HDDP) is a variant of the standard DDP formulation that leverages both first-order and second-order state transition matrices in addition to nonlinear programming (NLP) techniques. Areas of improvement over standard DDP include constraint handling, convergence properties, continuous dynamics, and multi-phase capability. DDP is a gradient based method and will converge to a solution nearby an initial guess. In this study, monotonic basin hopping (MBH) is employed as a stochastic search method to overcome this limitation, by augmenting the HDDP algorithm for a wider search of the solution space.

A dynamic model of the human postural control system

A digital simulation of the pitch axis dynamics of a stick man of figures is described. Difficulties encountered in linearizing the equations of motion are discussed; the conclusion reached is that a completely linear simulation is of such restricted validity that only a nonlinear simulation is of any practical use. Typical simulation results obtained from the full nonlinear model are presented.

Control of turbofan lift engines for VTOL aircraft.

This paper presents the results of an analytical study of the dynamics and control of turbofan lift engines, and proposes methods of meeting the response requirements imposed by the VTOL aircraft application. Two types of lift fan engines are discussed: the integral and remote. The integral engine is a conventional two-spool, high bypass ratio turbofan designed for low noise and short length. The remote engine employs a gas generator and a lift fan which are separated by a duct, and which need not be coaxial. For the integral engine, a control system design is presented which satisfies the VTOL response requirements. For the remote engine, two unconventional methods of control involving flow transfer between lift units are discussed.

Control of Flexible Structures (COFS) Flight Experiment Background and Description

A fundamental problem in designing and delivering large space structures to orbit is to provide sufficient structural stiffness and static configuration precision to meet performance requirements. These requirements are directly related to control requirements and the degree of control system sophistication available to supplement the as-built structure. Background and rationale are presented for a research study in structures, structural dynamics, and controls using a relatively large, flexible beam as a focus. This experiment would address fundamental problems applicable to large, flexible space structures in general and would involve a combination of ground tests, flight behavior prediction, and instrumented orbital tests. Intended to be multidisciplinary but basic within each discipline, the experiment should provide improved understanding and confidence in making design trades between structural conservatism and control system sophistication for meeting static shape and dynamic response/stability requirements. Quantitative results should be obtained for use in improving the validity of ground tests for verifying flight performance analyses.

New control concept of anthropomorphic manipulators

The control of active articulated mechanisms involves the construction of trajectories and corresponding forces (torques). Two procedures for developing mathematical models of manipulator dynamics are explored. The control task can be formulated as follows: define the dynamic control parameters of the basic manipulator configuration with three degrees of freedom, which should perform movements at N points of the working space. The task can be solved by forming programmed coordinated motion which have to realize the adopted tip trajectory.

Flight Control Overview of STS-88, the First Space Station Assembly Flight

When the Space Shuttle Endeavour undocked from the Zarya/Unity configuration on STS-88 it marked the completion of the most challenging shuttle mission to date and the beginning of an enormous task of assembling the International Space Station. The flight offered an array of complex dynamics and control related challenges to mate the American module 'Unity' to the Russian module 'Zarya'. Capability demonstrated on the flight included closed-loop thruster control in the presence of low frequency structural dynamics and mated-vehicle translational maneuvers in the presence of structural loads and thruster hardware constraints. The flight was a complete success from all aspects. This paper will give an overview of the flight control challenges encountered and the actual control performance observed for the on-orbit operations. Included will be the shuttle analysis and filtering strategies to ensure control system stability in the presence of low frequency flex-body dynamics.

Suppression of Nonlinear Rotary Slosh Dynamics Using the SLS Adaptive Augmenting Control System Demonstration on a Quadcopter Testbed

Liquid propellant makes up a significant portion of the total weight for large launch vehicles such as Saturn V, Space Shuttle, and the Space Launch System. Careful attention must be given to the influence of fuel slosh motion on the stability of the vehicle in the design of the Flight Control System (FCS). Historically, there have been instances where a poorly designed FCS in addition to a lack of passive damping have caused the slosh mass to drive the launch vehicle unstable. The dynamics behind controlling a quadcopter/hanging mass configuration is analogous to that of controlling the attitude of a rocket with a single propellant tank. The quadcopter/hanging mass configuration offers a reasonably accurate platform for assessing the real-time effectiveness of the SLS Adaptive Augmenting Controller in suppressing slosh instability. Flight test experiments were carried out at the NASA Langley Research Center's Autonomy Incubator. During both simulation and flight test, the hanging mass was intentionally made unstable and the adaptive algorithm successfully suppressed the instability as expected.

Robust computer-aided synthesis and optimization of linear multivariable control systems with varying plant dynamics via AUTOCON

AUTOCON is an automated computer-aided design tool for the synthesis and optimization of linear multivariable control systems based upon user-defined control parameter optimization. Violations in stability and performance requirements are computed from constraints on Single Input/Single Output (SISO) open- and closed-loop transfer function frequency responses, and from constraints on the singular-value frequency responses of Multiple Input/Multiple Output (MIMO) transfer functions, for all critical plant variations. Optimum nonlinear programming algorithms are used in the search for local constrained solutions in which violations in stability and performance are caused either to vanish or be minimized for a proper selection of the control parameters. Classical control system stability and performance design can, in this way, be combined with modern multivariable robustness methods to offer general frequency response loop-shaping via a computer-aided design tool. Complete Nichols, Nyquist, Bode, singular-value Bode magnitude and transient response plots are produced, including user-defined boundary responses. AUTOCON is used to synthesize and optimize the lateral/directional flight control system for a typical high-performance aircraft.
