Gravitational time delay in orthogonally polarized radiation passing by the sun

Two parallel investigations into the degree, if any, to which orthogonally polarized rays are deflected differently on passing through the gravitational field of the sun were previously conducted. The first involved very long and intermediate length baseline radio interferometry. The second was initially based on observations of radiation transmitted by the Pioneer 6 spacecraft, on passing behind the sun in 1968. This work was extended by using Helios-A and Helios-B spacecraft. It was calculated that the differential deflection between orthogonally polarized components is less than one part in 10 to the 7th power of the total gravitational deflection, or less than about 10 to the -7th power arc sec, in total.

Phase versus delay in geodetic VLBI

The conditions for the applicability of the phase observable in very long baseline interferometry are discussed and examples of adequate observation programs are given. These considerations apply in particular to the Mark 2 system, which is already in operation at many observatories.

Hydromagnetic wavelike phenomena from Helios time delay measurements by remote sensing

A survey of the electron content measurements during solar occultations of the Helios A and B spacecraft is presented, and a spectral analysis using the method of maximum entropy is discussed. Typical variations measured are on the order of 0.1-1.8 x 10 to the 18th/sq m, while typical values for the rate of change are 0.7-50 x 10 to the 13th per sq m per sec. Numerical results in agreement with findings from Helios radio science, reveal a fundamental period of about 70 minutes superimposed by minor spectral peaks corresponding to shorter time periods such as 35 and 25 minutes. In addition, the periodicities observed in electron content are discussed in terms of fast hydromagnetic waves excited by nonlinear Alfven waves via coupling terms before crossing the Helios ray path. It is noted that for the first time experimental evidence is presented that hydromagnetic waves may actually be propagating from the solar corona into the interplanetary medium.

Reassessment of a reported S-delay under Trindade

A correction to a paper by Okal and Anderson (1975) about multiple ScS travel-time anomalies is presented. Data for ScS2 surface bounces in the South Atlantic Ocean have been reanalyzed. From these data an ScS2-S residual of 23.6 seconds was found by Okal and Anderson (1975). This corresponded to an ScS2 surface bounce point under Trindade island and was inferred to be due to very slow upper mantle associated with the Trindade hot spot. The analysis presented here invalidates this conclusion. The nature of the upper mantle under Trindade is an open issue.

On the delay analysis of a TDMA channel with finite buffer capacity

The throughput performance of a TDMA channel with finite buffer capacity for transmitting data messages is considered. Each station has limited message buffer capacity and has Poisson message arrivals. Message arrivals will be blocked if the buffers are congested. Using the embedded Markov chain model, the solution procedure for the limiting system-size probabilities is presented in a recursive fashion. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the tradeoffs between the blocking probabilities and the buffer sizing strategy.

Evidence for delayed second phase acceleration in solar flares

Data gathered on solar gamma-ray events by the gamma-ray spectrometer on board the HEAO-3 satellite are discussed. Measurements were made of both hard X-ray and gamma-ray events. A total of 37 flare-like incidences were detected from October 1979 to July 1980. Power law spectra were fitted to the flux energies exceeding 420 keV. The appearance of two events with a 30 sec interval between radiation peaks, a slow rise and quick decay of the high energy component, and the softening of the low energy component are taken for evidence of two acceleration processes, one boosting electrons to hundreds of keV for the X ray bursts, the other producing gamma rays through ions accelerated to tens of MeV.

Discrete approximation methods for parameter identification in delay systems

Approximation schemes for parameter identification problems in which the governing state equation is a linear functional differential equation of retarded type are constructed. The basis of the schemes is the replacement of the parameter identification problem having an infinite dimensional state equation by a sequence of approximating parameter identification problems in which the states are given by finite dimensional discrete difference equations. The difference equations are constructed using linear semigroup theory and rational function approximations to the exponential. Sufficient conditions are given for the convergence of solutions to the approximating problems, which can be obtained using conventional methods, to solutions to the original parameter identification problem. Finite difference and spline based schemes using Paderational function approximations to the exponential are constructed, and shown to satisfy the sufficient conditions for convergence. A discussion and analysis of numerical results obtained through the application of the schemes to several examples is included.

The delayed energetic particle event of June 6-10, 1979

Energetic particle observations carried out with the ISEE-3 Medium-Energy Cosmic Ray experiment during the flare event of June 6-10, 1979 are reported. An expanded time history of the He nuclei particle spectra is given, and particle trajectory angles are identified with respect to the earth-sun line. The backward flow of the particle stream following the shock was analyzed, and it is found that the shock continued to accelerate particles beyond 1 AU from the sun. Polar plots of the number of protons counted in each sector of observation are given with their corresponding magnetic field directions.

Delayed production of sulfuric acid condensation nuclei in the polar stratosphere from El Chichon volcanic vapors

It is pointed out that measurements of the vertical profiles of atmospheric condensation nuclei (CN) have been conducted since 1973. Studies with a new instrument revealed that the CN concentration undergoes a remarkable annual variation in the 30-km region characterized by a large increase in the late winter/early spring period with a subsequent decay during the remainder of the year. The event particles are observed to be volatile at 150 C, suggesting a sulfuric acid-water composition similar to that found in the normal 20 km aerosol layer. The development of about 10 to the 7th metric tons of sulfuric acid aerosol following the injection of sulfurous gases by El Chichon in April 1982, prompted Hofmann and Rosen (1983) to predict a very large CN event for 1983. The present investigation is concerned with the actual observation of the predicted event. Attention is given to the observation of a very large increase of what appear to be small sulfuric acid droplets at 30-km altitude in January 1983 over Laramie, WY, in January 1983.

A synchronous data analyzer for the Minimum Delay Data Format (MDDF) and Launch Trajectory Acquisition System (LTAS)

The Synchronous Data Analyzer gives its user an independent source for checking the validity of raw MDDF and LTAS data. Its ability to produce real-time displays comprised of decoded parameters as well as its ability to capture several frames for non-real-time display makes it a valuable tool for monitoring and troubleshooting applications involving these data formats. Its composition of portable firmware and mostly commercial hardware makes it a low cost, easily fabricated product.

Automated problem scheduling and reduction of synchronization delay effects

It is anticipated that in order to make effective use of many future high performance architectures, programs will have to exhibit at least a medium grained parallelism. A framework is presented for partitioning very sparse triangular systems of linear equations that is designed to produce favorable preformance results in a wide variety of parallel architectures. Efficient methods for solving these systems are of interest because: (1) they provide a useful model problem for use in exploring heuristics for the aggregation, mapping and scheduling of relatively fine grained computations whose data dependencies are specified by directed acrylic graphs, and (2) because such efficient methods can find direct application in the development of parallel algorithms for scientific computation. Simple expressions are derived that describe how to schedule computational work with varying degrees of granularity. The Encore Multimax was used as a hardware simulator to investigate the performance effects of using the partitioning techniques presented in shared memory architectures with varying relative synchronization costs.

Devitrification and delayed crazing of SiO2 on single-crystal silicon and chemically vapor-deposited silicon nitride

The linear growth rate of cristobalite was measured in thin SiO2 films on silicon and chemically vapor-deposited silicon nitride. The presence of trace impurities from alumina furnace tubes greatly increased the crystal growth rate. Under clean conditions, the growth rate was still 1 order-of-magnitude greater than that for internally nucleated crystals in bulk silica. Crystallized films cracked and lifted from the surface after exposure to atmospheric water vapor. The crystallization and subsequent crazing and lifting of protective SiO2 films on silicon nitride should be considered in long-term applications.
