Digital test signal generation: An accurate SNR calibration approach for the DSN

In support of the on-going automation of the Deep Space Network (DSN) a new method of generating analog test signals with accurate signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is described. High accuracy is obtained by simultaneous generation of digital noise and signal spectra at the desired bandwidth (base-band or bandpass). The digital synthesis provides a test signal embedded in noise with the statistical properties of a stationary random process. Accuracy is dependent on test integration time and limited only by the system quantization noise (0.02 dB). The monitor and control as well as signal-processing programs reside in a personal computer (PC). Commands are transmitted to properly configure the specially designed high-speed digital hardware. The prototype can generate either two data channels modulated or not on a subcarrier, or one QPSK channel, or a residual carrier with one biphase data channel. The analog spectrum generated is on the DC to 10 MHz frequency range. These spectra may be up-converted to any desired frequency without loss on the characteristics of the SNR provided. Test results are presented.

Electrochemical Behavior of Cerium at an Indium Tin-Doped Oxide Electrode in Acidic Media

The redox behavior and speciation of cerium at mesoporous thin films composed of nanoparticles of indium tin-doped oxide (nITO) electrodes were characterized in pH 4.8, 0.1 M acetate buffer and both 0.1 and 1 M HNO 3 using electrochemical techniques and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Anodic deposition of ceria species from Ce(III) to the nITO electrode was achieved under all solvent conditions via spontaneous condensation of electrochemically generated ceric hydroxide species. In 1 M nitric acid, the rate of CeO 2 dissolution is on the same order as CeO 2 deposition, resulting in negligible amounts of CeO 2 electrodeposited at the nITO surface. The cathodic stripping of CeO 2 from the nITO substrate deposited in 0.1 M nitric acid or pH 4.8 acetate buffer follows a 2-step process where Ce(IV)-oxide is initially reduced to an unstable Ce(III)-oxide species that rapidly undergoes acid catalyzed dissolution to yield soluble Ce(III) (aq) . These findings provide a foundation for the pH and anodic potential controlled deposition of CeO 2 thin films to ITO substrates, which can aid in the development of materials composed of ceria. As a result, they can also be used to infer likely analogous actinide redox behavior and speciation at these electrodes.

In-situ resonant band engineering of solution-processed semiconductors generates high performance n-type thermoelectric nano-inks

Thermoelectric devices possess enormous potential to reshape the global energy landscape by converting waste heat into electricity, yet their commercial implementation has been limited by their high cost to output power ratio. No single “champion” thermoelectric material exists due to a broad range of material-dependent thermal and electrical property optimization challenges. While the advent of nanostructuring provided a general design paradigm for reducing material thermal conductivities, there exists no analogous strategy for homogeneous, precise doping of materials. Here, we demonstrate a nanoscale interface-engineering approach that harnesses the large chemically accessible surface areas of nanomaterials to yield massive, finely-controlled, and stable changes in the Seebeck coefficient, switching a poor nonconventional p- type thermoelectric material, tellurium, into a robust n -type material exhibiting stable properties over months of testing. These remodeled, n -type nanowires display extremely high power factors (~500 µW m -1 K -2 ) that are orders of magnitude higher than their bulk p -type counterparts.

Para-particle oscillator simulations on a trapped-ion quantum computer

Deformed oscillators allow for a generalization of the standard fermions and bosons, namely, for the description of para-particles. Such particles remain hypothetical and unobserved in nature; yet, they can model physical phenomena, such as topological phases of matter. Here, we report the digital quantum simulation of para-particle oscillators by mapping para-particle states to the state of a qubit register, which allows us to identify the para-particle oscillator Hamiltonian as an XY model and further digitize the system onto a universal set of gates. In both instances, the gate depth grows polynomially with the number of qubits used. To establish the validity of our results, we experimentally simulate the dynamics of para-fermions and para-bosons, demonstrating full control of para-particle oscillators on a quantum computer. Furthermore, we compare the overall performance of the digital simulation of dynamics of the driven para-Fermi oscillator to a recent analog quantum simulation result.

Optically controlled microwave devices and circuits: Emerging applications in space communications systems

Optical control of microwave devices and circuits by an optical fiber has the potential to simplify signal distribution networks in high frequency communications systems. The optical response of two terminal and three terminal (GaAs MESFET, HEMT, PBT) microwave devices are compared and several schemes for controlling such devices by modulated optical signals examined. Monolithic integration of optical and microwave functions on a single semiconductor substrate is considered to provide low power, low loss, and reliable digital and analog optical links for signal distribution.

What FM can offer DFCS design

The results of aircrafts and spacecrafts flight tests are reported. It is shown that the problems of Digital Flight Control Systems (DFCS) are the problems of systems whose complexity has exceeded the reach of the intellectual tools employed. It is also shown that intuition, experience, and techniques derived from mechanical and analog systems are insufficient for complex, integrated, digital systems. Formal Methods (FM) of computer science can offer DFCS systematic techniques for the construction of trustworthy software, including: techniques for the precise specification of requirements and the development of designs; systematic approaches to the design and structuring of distributed and concurrent systems; fault tolerance algorithms; and systematic methods of testing and analytic methods of verification.

International Space Station as Analog of Interplanetary Transit Vehicle For Biomedical Research

Astronaut missions lasting up to six months aboard the International Space Station (ISS) have much in common with interplanetary flights, especially the outbound, Earth-to-Mars transit portion of a Mars mission. Utilization of ISS and other appropriate platforms to prepare for crewed expeditions to planetary destinations including Mars has been the work of NASA's Human Research Program (HRP) since 2005. HRP is charged specifically to understand and reduced the risks to astronaut health and performance in space exploration missions: everything HRP does and has done is directly related to that responsibility. Two major categories of human research have capitalized on ISS capabilities. The first category centers on the biomedical aspects of long-duration exposure to spaceflight factors, including prolonged weightlessness, radiation exposure, isolation and confinement, and actual risk to life and limb. These studies contribute to astronaut safety, health and efficiency on any long-duration missions, whether in low Earth orbit (LEO) or beyond. Qualitatively, weightlessness is weightlessness, whether in LEO or en route to Mars. The HRP sponsors investigations into losses in muscle and bone integrity, cardiovascular function, sensory-motor capability, immune capacity and psychosocial health, and development and demonstration of appropriate treatments and preventative measures. The second category includes studies that are focused on planetary expeditions beyond LEO. For these, ISS offers a high fidelity analog to investigate the combined effects of spaceflight factors (described above) plus the isolation and autonomy associated with simulated increasing distance from Earth. Investigations address crew cohesion, performance and workload, and mission control performance. The behavioral health and performance and space human factors aspects of planetary missions dominate this category. Work has already begun on a new investigation in this category which will examine the effects of a simulated lag in communications (mimicking that expected in transit to Mars) on astronaut performance aboard ISS. Extension of the current ISS increment duration from six months to nine or even twelve months would provide opportunities for expanded research relevant to long duration missions, albeit at the cost of fewer astronauts as subjects for those investigations. Given the possible limited access to ISS after 2020, if ISS is intended to facilitate future exploration missions, then the in-flight human investigations should focus on those that clearly enable future exploration missions.

Antenna Controller Replacement Software

The Antenna Controller Replacement (ACR) software accurately points and monitors the Deep Space Network (DSN) 70-m and 34-m high-efficiency (HEF) ground-based antennas that are used to track primarily spacecraft and, periodically, celestial targets. To track a spacecraft, or other targets, the antenna must be accurately pointed at the spacecraft, which can be very far away with very weak signals. ACR s conical scanning capability collects the signal in a circular pattern around the target, calculates the location of the strongest signal, and adjusts the antenna pointing to point directly at the spacecraft. A real-time, closed-loop servo control algorithm performed every 0.02 second allows accurate positioning of the antenna in order to track these distant spacecraft. Additionally, this advanced servo control algorithm provides better antenna pointing performance in windy conditions. The ACR software provides high-level commands that provide a very easy user interface for the DSN operator. The operator only needs to enter two commands to start the antenna and subreflector, and Master Equatorial tracking. The most accurate antenna pointing is accomplished by aligning the antenna to the Master Equatorial, which because of its small size and sheltered location, has the most stable pointing. The antenna has hundreds of digital and analog monitor points. The ACR software provides compact displays to summarize the status of the antenna, subreflector, and the Master Equatorial. The ACR software has two major functions. First, it performs all of the steps required to accurately point the antenna (and subreflector and Master Equatorial) at the spacecraft (or celestial target). This involves controlling the antenna/ subreflector/Master-Equatorial hardware, initiating and monitoring the correct sequence of operations, calculating the position of the spacecraft relative to the antenna, executing the real-time servo control algorithm to maintain the correct position, and monitoring tracking performance.

Logic operations with active topological defects

Logic operations performed by semiconductor-based transistors are the basis of modern computing. There is considerable interest in creating autonomous materials systems endowed with the capability to make decisions. In this work, we introduce the concept of using topological defects in active matter to perform logic operations. When an extensile active stress in a nematic liquid crystal is turned on, +1/2 defects can self-propel, in analogy to electron transport under a voltage gradient. By relying on hydrodynamic simulations of active nematics, we demonstrate that patterns of activity, when combined with surfaces imparting certain orientations, can be used to control the formation and transport of +1/2 defects. We further show that asymmetric high- and low-activity patterns can be used to create effective defect gates, tunnels, and amplifiers. The proposed active systems offer the potential to perform computations and transmit information in active soft materials, including actin-, tubulin-, and cell-based systems.

Porin-Inspired Ionomers with sub-nm Gated Ion Channels for High Ion Conductivity and Selectivity (Final Project Report (2026))

The physiological functions of living systems heavily rely on biological ion channels, whose malfunction can lead to disease. These channels enable selective and regulated transport of water, ions, or small molecules across membranes. Analogously, ionomers used in energy conversion and storage technologies govern ion transport within membrane separators and catalyst binder layers. This DOE Office of Science Early CAREER project aimed to achieve molecular-level control over ionic conductivity and ion permselectivity by translating the functionalities of biological, gated ion channels into a novel class of ion-conducting polymers (ionomers) incorporating macrocyclic calix[4]arene-based repeat units. The overarching goal was to establish fundamental design principles and elucidate proton conduction mechanisms through strategic design of macrocyclic calix[4]arene-containing ionomers, with close relevance to energy conversion and storage devices, including proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The project leveraged sub-nm-sized macrocyclic pores to facilitate exceptionally fast ion transport (beneficial to addressing sluggish ORR kinetics of PEMFC electrodes) and achieve functionalities of ionic diodes under applied electrochemical fields, beneficial for selective transport/separation.
