Slides for Focus Group-UTM
These slides form the first talking points for the CON3 focus groups. They are designed to give an overview of the UTM project to people with no prior knowledge so they can help us with ideas for a public portal USS.
RUMS - Realtime Visualization and Evaluation of Live, Virtual, Constructive Simulation Data
This paper describes the tools and display capabilities being developed to visualize aircraft flight and trajectory information that is produced during a distributed Live, Virtual, Constructive (LVC) simulation events involving a mix of manned and unmanned aircraft. This paper discusses the design approach and general software architecture of the Remote User Monitor Service (RUMS) application. The simulations and flight tests are conducted over a nationwide network with components communicating via software gateways that translate the messages and provide a location to access and collect data. The data collected is not only archived for post-processing and analysis, but also processed in real-time by RUMS, which allows dynamic viewing of the information via a web browser. This real-time dynamic viewing of the data allows test conductors and researchers to monitor the health of the distributed system and of the data being collected not only in situ where tests are conducted but also at remote locations.
Embracing Innovation in Aviation While Respecting Its Safety Tradition
Emerging markets for drones and urban air mobility are going to impact the airspace operations environment. Changes to the current system is necessary to enable new innovations without compromising safety. This presentation discusses how a UTM-inspired air traffic management system can address these needs.
A Fuzzy Logic Approach for Separation Assurance and Collision Avoidance for Unmanned Aerial Systems
In the coming years, operations in low altitude airspace will vastly increase as the capabilities and applications of small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS) continue to multiply. Therefore, solutions to managing sUAS in highly congested airspace must be explored. In this study, a Fuzzy Logic based approach was used to help mitigate the risk of collisions between aircraft using separation assurance and collision avoidance techniques. The system was evaluated for its effectiveness to mitigate the risk of mid-air collisions between aircraft. This system utilizes only current state information and can resolve potential conflicts without knowledge of intruder intent. The avoidance logic was verified using formal methods and shown to select the correct action in all instances. Additionally, the Fuzzy Logic Controllers were shown to always turn the vehicles in the correct direction. Numerical testing demonstrated that the avoidance system was able to prevent a mid-air collision between two sUAS in all tested cases. Simulations were also performed in a three-dimensional environment with a heterogenous fleet of sUAS performing a variety of realistic missions. Simulations showed that the system was 99.98 effective at preventing mid-air collisions when separation assurance was disabled (unmitigated case) and 100 effective when enabled (mitigated case).
Better Tracking and Management
The global airline industry continued to grow in 2014, with profits projected to expand from $12.9 billion in 2013 to $18.7 billion by the end of this year. Key factors driving this increase include continued improvement in overall economic conditions, greater air cargo volumes and stable fuel prices. However, the razor-thin profit margin of 2.5 percent is susceptible to various risks, including the possibility of higher fuel prices due to political crises around the world. In addition, new orders for Airbus and Boeing aircraft are expected to be half of the nearly 3,000 ordered in 2013.

Impact of Airborne Radar Uncertainties on Detect-and-Avoid Systems’ Performance
Impact of sensor uncertainty on Detect-and-Avoid (DAA) systems’ performance is investigated. Key metrics analyzed are the loss of DAA well clear ratio, the near-mid-air-collision risk ratio, the alert ratio, and the number of maneuvers per loss of DAA well clear. Sensitivity of these metrics to the magnitude of sensor uncertainty, pilots’ selection of maneuver, and surveillance range is investigated. Benefits of a dynamic buffer around the DAA well clear separation boundary, computed based on track accuracies, are also analyzed. These metrics are computed from open- and closed-loop simulations of a large number of representative encounters between an unmanned aircraft system and a manned aircraft. Results show that sensor uncertainty degrades safety metrics considerably but has only a minor effect on the number of maneuvers per loss of DAA well clear. The number of maneuvers, nonetheless, can be reduced by a 5◦ buffer away from the edge of the range of conflict-resulting heading in pilots’ selection of maneuver.
