Northstar Accelerator Based Mo99 Production Facility Design Support

Facility design support in FY20 centered on transfer of the target insertion and design details to MBraun and Springs, the companies under contract via Northstar to do the hot cell, target insertion and the local target shielding. A significant number of changes have been introduced by these vendors which have been reviewed and critiqued. In addition, the company contracted to produce the Mo100 disks announced that the tolerance on the thickness of 0.5 mm would be ±25%. An alternative design of the target holder was proposed. Bulk shielding and local target shielding design work has continued also and will be reported. Ongoing design and cooling issues continue to arise as the facility takes shape and moves toward completion. LANL is part of the team identifying, analyzing and designing solutions to these issues. Many of these are covered in this report.

Examination of the Extreme Cold Weather Event Affecting the Power System in Texas - February 2021 [Slides]

This presentation examines the extreme cold weather event that affected the power system in Texas in February 2021. The Texas load-shedding events were caused by a combination of record-high demand and cold weather issues that reduced the output from all types of generation. While some wind turbines were shutting down due to cold temperatures and icing and a lack of cold-weather packages, hourly wind output was accurately predicted. Extreme weather events historically drive grid reliability. Additional examination of more extreme events is needed to understand their impacts on the power system. As a national lab, NREL has the capabilities and facilities to help the industry address these types of challenges. NREL also has significant simulation and analysis capabilities (such as NAERM) that can help understand the impacts of extreme events. NREL also developed the Advanced Research on Integrated Energy Systems (ARIES) Research Platform, which enables evaluation of technologies that smooth grid operations during events like this.

Enhanced Beam Diagnostics with Existing BPPMs via GPU-powered Multi-Particle Simulation

This research aims to utilize the multi-particle code, High-Performance Simulator (HPSim), to realistically model the Side-Coupled-Cavity Linac (CCL) lattice of the LANSCE accelerator. This new model would allow us to predict the beam’s bunch length (the longitudinal spread), which is unavailable for individual accelerating modules or only accessible at the end of the linac. However, a correct bunch length is critical for the high-energy beam transport after the CCL. Its impact would be most significant in the Proton Storage Ring (PSR), where we should be able to reduce losses for the circulating beam. The PSR is scheduled to have a 25% current increase for the neutron spallation target upgrade at the Lujan Center. A highly bunched beam would be necessary to reduce the particle losses and lower the radiation levels produced from the ring. A realistic HPSim model with >1M macro-particles can help tackle the beam losses at the sub-percent level. This new work would also create a realistic surrogate model for future machine learning projects.

The Demand-Side Opportunity: The Roles of Distributed Solar and Building Energy Systems in a Decarbonized Grid

Building energy systems represent a significant and largely untapped demand-side grid resource. Buildings use about 75% of electricity in the United States, including around 80% of peak demand, meaning that changes in building energy use have significant implications for grid operations. Building energy technologies-including energy-efficient devices, flexible loads, and energy storage-can be coordinated and aggregated to perform similar functions as centralized grid assets. Recent advances in information and communication (ICT) technologies have significantly improved building energy technology automation, coordination, and aggregation capabilities. With declining costs and technological advances, building energy systems can increasingly compete with conventional grid assets such as natural gas plants. Building energy technologies enable the deployment of distributed solar photovoltaics (DPV). Energy-efficient buildings allow DPV to meet greater shares of building load while flexible loads and energy storage can reshape building load profiles to optimize the on-site use of DPV. Optimized on-site use of DPV increases the value proposition for DPV adoption and can help utilities cost-effectively integrate higher levels of DPV penetration. Together, DPV and building energy technologies could help grids achieve deep decarbonization more quickly and cost-effectively.

Northstar Mo99 Window Tests

Tests were completed for window to “first disk” (actually a steel plate for these expariments) gaps of 20 mil as per design gap as well as 10 mil and 30 mil gaps to span the range of possible variations. With possible disk distortion in beam, another test with 0 gap was performed. Based on deflections measured during the pressure test, the 0 gap was most likely very near 3 mil.

New accelerator capabilities with the high-gradient C-band [Slides]

LANSCE accelerator upgrades: Applications such as pRad desire higher proton beam energy. Material science at LANL will benefit from powerful directional high repetition rate X-ray sources. As it considers itself to be the NNSA accelerator laboratory, LANL should play role in developing compact accelerators for various national security missions.

Ducted Fuel Injection and Cooled Spray Technologies for Particulate Control in Heavy-Duty Diesel Engines

Heavy-Duty diesel engine manufacturers are continuously in pursuit of simple and low-cost technologies that can reduce emissions. Ducted fuel injection (DFI) and Cooled Spray (CS) technologies are two technologies that continue to show promise for significant particulate emissions reductions. These technologies represent a breakthrough in diesel engine combustion from the potential of nearly sootless diesel combustion. This can provide a significant decrease in harmful PM emissions and may enable further system optimization for reduced NOx emissions and increased efficiency. Combustion vessel experiments and engine demonstrations at Sandia, together with the large bore engine tests performed by Wabtec show that this technology may be applicable to heavy duty diesel engines across a wide range of engine sizes and speeds representing the majority of off-road diesel engines. However, very little is known about the ideal geometry, scaling properties or effectiveness of these technologies over the engine operating map. This project will address those uncertainties through a series of experiments performed in an optical and a metal single-cylinder engine.

Beam Coupling Impedances of Inter-cell Section in Scorpius Linac

The following technical note is prepared for distribution to external project collaborators. An inter-cell pumping section in the Scorpius linac contains a pumping grid with slots, bellows, and vacuum plenum. The beam coupling impedances of the inter-cell section are calculated with CST Studio. Important to note that all impedance values in the tech note below should be divided by a factor of 2 to obtain the beam coupling impedances in their standard definition; see reference for details.

Mo-100 Disk Structural Integrity Tests I

The NorthStar pressed and sintered 29 mm diameter, 0.5 mm thick Mo-100 disks will be subjected to large temperature gradients when in beam during production. The beam preferentially heats the disk center, while the aggressive cooling by the helium keeps areas outside the beam spot relatively cool. The result is a temperature gradient of up to 900°C over the radial distance of 14.5 mm. To test the disk integrity with this high temperature gradient, a special holder for a single disk was made such that proper cooling can be applied as in the design target and the disk heating can be replicated with induction heating. NorthStar press and sintered disks were used for these tests.

Step Catalysis to Synthesize Fossil-Free Ammonia at Atmospheric Pressure (Final Technical Report)

Affordable fossil-free ammonia synthesis will enable high-yield sustainable crop production for a growing world population while preserving the planet and making the best use of water and land. Simple technology amenable to intermittent operation using renewable energy will be made available through step catalysis activating dinitrogen at atmospheric pressure by nitride formation. Project objectives: (1) At the single particle level, quantify and analyze N2 activation by doped or alloyed manganese macroscopic- and nano particles at atmospheric pressure, (2) Quantify and analyze ammonia synthesis from doped or alloyed metal nitride particles when contacting them with hydrogen at atmospheric pressure, and (3) Integrate experimental data and atomic-level computational models to predict the behavior of metal alloys in nitrogen activation and subsequent ammonia synthesis.
