Suppressed Fluctuations as the Origin of the Static Magnetic Order in Strained Sr 2 RuO 4

Combining first-principles density-functional calculations and Moriya's self-consistent renormalization theory, we explain the recently reported counterintuitive appearance of an ordered magnetic state in uniaxially strained Sr 2 RuO 4 beyond the Lifshitz transition. We show that strain weakens the quantum spin fluctuations, which destroy the static order, more strongly than the tendency to magnetism. Furthermore, a different rate of decrease of the spin fluctuations vs magnetic stabilization energy promotes the onset of a static magnetic order beyond a critical strain.

Nuclear Astrophysics in the Storage Ring: Background Suppressed Simultaneous Measurement of (p,γ) and (p,n) Reactions

We report the application of the new elimination of Rutherford elastic scattering technique for the measurement of proton-induced reaction cross sections utilizing stored ions decelerated to astrophysical energies. This approach results in a background reduction factor of about 1 order of magnitude, enabling the first measurement of a (p, n) cross section in a storage ring. Here, the reaction channels 124 Xe⁢(p,n) and 124 Xe⁢(p,γ) have been studied just above the neutron threshold energy. The new data provide valuable constraints for Hauser-Feshbach theory and extrapolation of the (p,γ) cross section to lower energies. Most importantly, for nuclei of limited availability, the method represents a powerful improvement to efficiently study proton-induced reactions at energies within or close to the astrophysical Gamow window, bringing many reaction measurements within reach that were previously inaccessible in the laboratory.

Suppressing Quantum Circuit Errors Due to System Variability

We present a quantum circuit optimization technique that takes into account the variability in error rates that is inherent across present-day noisy quantum computing platforms. This method can be run after qubit routing or postcompilation and consists of computing isomorphic subgraphs to input circuits and scoring each using heuristic cost functions derived from system calibration data. Using an independent standard algorithmic test suite, we show that it is possible to recover on average nearly 40% of missing fidelity using better qubit selection via efficient to compute cost functions. We demonstrate additional performance gains by considering qubit placement over multiple quantum processors. The overhead from these tools is minimal with respect to other compilation steps, such as qubit routing, as the number of qubits increases. As such, our method can be used to find qubit mappings for problems at the scale of quantum advantage and beyond.

A Voltage Injection-Based Current Harmonics Suppression Strategy for Six-Phase PMSM With Nonsinusoidal Back EMF

This article presents a voltage injection-based current harmonic minimization method for wide bandgap device-based six-phase permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) drives. The presence of low-order harmonics is common in the back EMF of PMSMs with low slot and high pole numbers. The back EMF harmonics generate low-order harmonic currents that increase torque ripples. Furthermore, zero-sequence current (ZSC) is also observed if all six phases are connected to a common neutral point. ZSC does not affect the torque ripple but reduces the system efficiency. A special technique is required to reduce ZSC for variable speed drives as direct ac component to synchronous reference frame (SRF) dc transformation is not possible for ZSC. In this article, a voltage injection-based current harmonics reduction method is proposed. The injected harmonic voltage coefficients are calculated from the harmonic estimations of back EMF and updated using closed-loop harmonic compensators to improve steady-state performance. For ZSC reduction, third harmonics power controller, and for 6n ± 1 (n = 1, 2,...) order harmonic current reduction, SRF current controllers are presented in this article. Furthermore, the current harmonics minimization method is experimentally verified using a GaN-based three-level active neutral point clamped inverter-driven six-phase PMSM.

Wideband Impedance Passivation of MMCs for Suppressing Harmonic Oscillations

Harmonic instability and associated oscillation events have become one of the main concerns in MMC-based HVdc systems. These oscillations can appear in the range from a few hundred hertz to several kilohertz, and the root cause is identified as delay-induced negative damping of MMC impedance appearing at the system resonance frequency. Here, this paper introduces a wideband impedance reshaping method through MMC control to eliminate such negative damping for both grid-following (GFL) and grid-forming (GFM) MMCs, which makes the MMC impedance completely passive from the second harmonic frequency upward, thus preventing all harmonic oscillations. First, simplified impedance models of MMCs are derived for the harmonic stability analysis and the impedance reshaping control design. Next, a passivity-based impedance reshaping method is presented, as well as practical considerations for its implementation. In addition, to maintain the MMC's disturbance ride-through capability, an adaptive activation scheme is developed, which enables the wideband impedance reshaping control only in the presence of harmonic oscillation events. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated by frequency domain analysis and by electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulations of two typical MMC-based power systems.

Microbial community shifts correspond with suppression of decomposition 25 years after liming of acidic forest soils

Microbial community structure and function regularly covary with soil pH, yet effects of these interactions on soil carbon are rarely tested experimentally within natural ecosystems. We investigated the enduring (25 year) impacts of liming on microbial community structure and decomposition at an acidic northern hardwood forest, where experimental liming increased pH one unit and surprisingly doubled the organic carbon stocks of the forest floor. Here we show that this increase in carbon storage corresponded with restructuring of the bacterial and fungal communities that drive decomposition. In the Oe horizon, liming reduced the activities of five extracellular enzymes that mediate decomposition, while the Oa horizon showed an especially large (64%) reduction in the activity of a sixth, peroxidase, which is an oxidative enzyme central to lignocellulose degradation. Decreased enzyme activities corresponded with loss of microbial taxa important for lignocellulose decay, including large reductions in the dominant ectomycorrhizal genera Russula and Cenococcum, saprotrophic and wood decaying fungi, and Actinobacteria (Thermomonosporaceae). These results demonstrate the importance of pH as a dominant regulator of microbial community structure and illustrate how changes to this structure can produce large, otherwise unexpected increases in carbon storage in forest soils.
