Using Dome Concordia to Characterize the Long-Term Stability of VIIRS Thermal Emissive Bands

The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instruments aboard the Suomi NPP and NOAA-20 spacecraft have successfully provided Earth image products since 2011 and 2017, respectively. Maintaining accurate radiometric calibration and calibration consistency between the two sensors is a necessity for the continued quality of long-term data records. In this work, the use of frequent VIIRS measurements of brightness temperature over the area surrounding Dome Concordia (Dome C), Antarctica (75.1 °S, 123.4°E) to track the long-term stability of its thermal emissive bands (TEB) is presented. The extremely dry, cold, and rarefied atmosphere of the site makes it ideal to track and detect long-term changes in the TEB responses via analysis of near-nadir and off-nadir VIIRS overpasses in reference to the surface temperature measurements provided by an automated weather station (AWS). Multi-year Dome C measurements have been used to assess the stability of the VIIRS response-versus-scan-angle (RVS) of the half-angle-mirror (HAM), derived from prelaunch characterization, and detector differences at multiple scan angles. Also, included in this work is the RVS stability assessments using the Dome C overpasses. The methodology developed via this work will also be applied to the recently launched VIIRS instrument onboard the NOAA-21 satellite (previously JPSS-2) in the future.

Aerodynamic stability and control of ducted- propeller aircraft

Test results from studies of small and large powered models of a dual, tandem, ducted-propeller VTOL design are reviewed, with emphasis on stability and control characteristics through the transition speed range. The characteristics are generally satisfactory. Stability augmentation may be required to reduce Dutch roll tendencies. Further study is needed to evaluate the apparently large side-force gradients in sideslip. Reductions in control effectiveness due to ground proximity are similar to those for tilt-wing V /STOL designs.

Airplane stability calculations and their verification by flight tests

For some time, the designers of airplanes have begun to occupy themselves with the question of longitudinal stability. In their quest to simplify calculation and data collection, the designers have attached the greatest importance to the coefficient of initial longitudinal stability. In this study a diagram was constructed from the data of the tunnel tests, which depends neither on the position of the center of gravity nor of the angle of deflection of the elevators. This diagram is constructed by means of straight lines drawn through the metacenters of the complete airplane, in a direction parallel to the tangents to the polar of the airplane relative to a system of axes fixed with reference to the airplane.

Effect of Taper Ratio on the Low-speed Rolling Stability Derivatives of Swept and Unswept Wings of Aspect Ratio 2.61

Results of tests conducted in the 6-foot-diameter rolling-flow test section of the Langley stability tunnel to determine the effects of varying taper ratio on the rolling and static stability characteristics of a swept wing are presented; results are also given for the effects of varying taper ratio on an unswept wing and for the effects of sweep on a tapered wing. All the models were of aspect ratio 2.61 and had NACA 0012 sections normal to the quarter-chord line. Taper ratios of 1.00, 0.50, and 0.25 and sweep angles of 0 degrees and 45 degrees were investigated.

Flight measurement of the stability characteristics of the Douglas D-558-1 airplane (BuAero No. 37971) in sideslips

Measurements have been made of the stability characteristics of the D-558-1 airplane in steadily increasing sideslip at various Mach numbers from 0.50 to 0.80 at 10,000 feet altitude and at Mach numbers from 0.50 to 0.84 at 30,000 feet altitude. The results of these tests show that the apparent directional stability of the airplane is high and increases with increasing Mach number and dynamic pressure. The dihedral effect is positive at all speeds, there is little or no change in pitching moment with sideslip, and the cross-wind force is positive.

Extreme Dimensional Stability Thermal Control Test

Two observatories under consideration in the 2020 decadal survey include coronagraphs for characterizing the atmospheric composition of exoplanets. The telescope in those observatories must provide a wavefront that is stable to the picometer level for the coronagraph to provide enough starlight rejection to capture light reflected off of an Earth-like exoplanet. Therefore, picometer dimensional stability and control are required for these missions. Analysis indicates the thermal environment around the primary mirror must be stable to milliKelvin for the primary mirror’s thermally induced wavefront error to be stable to picometers. Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) partnered with L3-Harris Corporation to design and build a 1.5mthermal control system capable of milliKelvin stability. MSFC tested this thermal control system in the X-Ray and Cryogenic Facility’s large chamber to characterize how well the system controlled a 1.5m ULE® mirror.

Stability Analysis of Streaks Induced by Optimized Vortex Generators

Numerical computations are performed to investigate the potential for transition control in an axisymmetric boundary layer via fully realizable, streamwise stationary streaks induced by an azimuthally periodic array of surface mounted vortex generators (VGs). Previous work has shown that suitable streaks of this type can significantly reduce the growth of Mack’s second mode instabilities, but large streak amplitudes can make the flow susceptible to previously absent streak instabilities that can become the leading cause of transition. Here, we use the adjoint capabilities of the SU2 flow solver to optimize the VG shape to maximize the reduction in the growth of second-mode disturbances while also preventing the streak amplitudes from reaching large enough values to precipitate an earlier onset of transition via streak instabilities. The geometry and the freestream flow conditions are selected to match a relevant trajectory lo-cation from the HIFiRE-1 flight experiment. Results show that the optimized VGs can increase the mean streak amplitude by 117% with respect to a manually developed baseline design. The stability of this optimized basic state is analyzed via the plane-marching parabolized stability equations, predicting a fully laminar flow over the entire cone, or equivalently, yielding transition delay of 130% versus the 17% for the baseline VGs.

STABILITY OF FILM BOILING TWO-PHASE FLOW IN CRYOGENIC SYSTEMS

The stability of film boiling two phase flow is investigated referring in particular to saturated cryogenic liquids. This type of fluid motion is unstable, such that a range of wave numbers will always be present in which disturbances are amplified. Further the mode of operation of the energy supply system may favour temperature fluctuations of large amplitude if the circuit does not provide feed-back compensation. The theoretically predicted stabilization due to capillarity is reduced considerably in liquefied gases with low surface tension, such as hydrogen. This effect causes the transition to turbulent flow to occur at low Reynolds numbers, and increases the heat transport in the turbulent regime. A comparison with experimental data, (horizontal cylinder), shows that the "critical" film Reynolds number ūδ/𝜈, at which instabilities become effective, is lowered from approximately 200, (O2), to about 30, (H2). Similar results have been found with other configurations. Therefore application of laminar film boiling solutions is restricted to small objects, entrance regions, or stagnation points. Turbulent correlations given so far are valid only for a certain group of substances with similar behavior.
