Big Hole Drilling Support for Nuclear Testing, 1985-1992: An Architectural Survey of the Area 1 Subdock, Nevada National Security Site, Nye County, Nevada

The U.S. Department of Energy, National Nuclear Security Administration Nevada Field Office (NNSA/NFO) planned to demolish two buildings at the Area 1 Subdock at the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) in Nye County, Nevada, to meet environmental management mission requirements. A review was conducted under Title 54 United States Code (USC) § 306101 (commonly known as Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act) and its implementing regulations, 36 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Part 800. As a result, a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was developed to mitigate the effects of the building demolitions. Stipulation III.B of the MOA requires an architectural survey of the Area 1 Subdock. Prior to this survey, the Subdock had not been systematically recorded. Therefore, an area of approximately 33 hectares (81 acres) was surveyed for historic properties by Desert Research Institute personnel. This effort resulted in the identification, recording, and evaluation of the potential Area 1 Subdock Historic District (SHPO Resource No. D377), including the identification of its contributing components. This district is recommended as eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) under Criteria A and C. It contains 14 primary resources which include individual buildings, structures, storage yards, and infrastructure. Of these resources, all except one are recommended as elements that contribute to the district during its period of significance corresponding to nuclear testing from 1985 through 1992. Four of the resources (B18847, B18848, S2772, S2773) are recommended as individually eligible for the NRHP.

QSCOUT Progress Report, June 2022 [Quantum Scientific Computing Open User Testbed]

Quantum information processing has reached an inflection point, transitioning from proof-of-principle scientific experiments to small, noisy quantum processors. To accelerate this process and eventually move to fault-tolerant quantum computing, it is necessary to provide the scientific community with access to whitebox testbed systems. The Quantum Scientific Computing Open User Testbed (QSCOUT) provides scientists unique access to an innovative system to help advance quantum computing science.

Electrodeposition method development for Californium Rare Isotope Breeder Upgrade (CARIBU) Source

Electrodeposition is one of the most widely utilized techniques for thin-film production with high yields. Although it is used extensively, this technique still presents several issues limiting its usefulness, including excess thickness and frequent cracking of deposited films. Efforts to improve thin-film production recently undertaken at Oak Ridge Laboratory by the authors have included studying operating conditions and applied electrolytes. Samarium was used as a surrogate material for californium, and yield was compared with different deposition condition. The final procedure from the optimized condition will be applied during production of the californium-252 source for the Californium Rare Isotope Breeder Upgrade (CARIBU) project, and the fission fragment will be analyzed.

Extending in situ X-ray Temperature Diagnostics to Internal Components

Time-resolved X-ray thermometry is an enabling technology for measuring temperature and phase change of components. However, current diagnostic methods are limited in their ability due to the invasive nature of probes or the requirement of coatings and optical access to the component. Our proposed developments overcome these challenges by utilizing X-rays to directly measure the objects temperature. Variable-Temperature X-ray Diffraction (VT-XRD) was performed over a wide range of temperatures and diffraction angles and was performed on several materials to analyze the patterns of the bulk materials for sensitivity. "High-speed" VT-XRD was then performed for a single material over a small range of diffraction angles to see how fast the experiments could be performed, whilst still maintaining peaks sufficiently large enough for analysis.

Analysis of a Bulk 237 Np Oxide Sample for Trace Actinides

A neptunium oxide sample was dissolved and trace actinide constituents were measured by isotope dilution ICP-MS (for 239–244 Pu, 233–238 U, 237 Np, 241–243 Am) and alpha spectrometry ( 238 Pu, 242 Cm, 244 Cm). This material contained significant quantities of transuranic elements, notably americium and curium. The isotopic composition of the material will continue to evolve over time due to radioactive decay; the measurements reported here include all isotopes decay corrected to a reference date of 1/1/2022. These factors may be considerations in criticality studies of the related 237 Np sphere.
