Characterizing Acoustic Signals in the Buildup to a Magnet Quench

In superconducting magnets, the irreversible transition of a portion of the coils to the resistivestate is called a quench. Repeated quenches are very costly, but there is currently no way ofanticipating quenches before they arrive, and relatively little is understood theoretically about thebuildup to a quench. In this study, we examine the relationship between the energy of acoustic eventsin the magnet during training and the minimum quench energy (MQE), an analytical formula forthe minimum possible energy needed to sustain a quench. We nd a tendency for the ratio ofevent energy to MQE (henceforth known as the "energy ratio") to increase over time in some rampsbut not others. Moreover, there are occasional outlier events that are unusually strong, and thereappears to be no consistent threshold for a quench. We further uncover concerns about the validityof the acoustic data, including signicant variations in the relative strengths of an event in dierentsensors and a few inconsistencies between sensors concerning the arrival times of acoustic events. Weultimately conclude that, while the energy ratio does often increase over time, any further researchendeavors will require the data to be improved in many ways.

Method for active sensor signal optimization

A system and method for optimizing a fiber optic sensor by properly clocking or rotationally orienting a window with a fiber optic focuser. This method may include shining light through the focuser into the window and receiving with a reflectometer a first reflection from a first surface of the window and a second reflection from a second surface of the window. Next, the method may include calculating a delta of intensities between the first and second reflections, and then rotating an orientation of the window to a next rotational orientation. The steps of rotating the orientation of the window, receiving reflections, and calculating their delta may be repeated any plurality of times to solve for a plurality of deltas. Then, the method may include the steps of determining which one of the deltas is the largest and fixing the window to the focuser at a rotational orientation associated therewith.

Methods, systems, and devices for accurate signal timing of power component events

Disclosed herein are methods, systems, and devices for system event detection associated with power grid components. Methods include detecting, at a plurality of sensors, emissions from a system event associated with at least one winding of a power component. Methods also include determining, using a processor, a plurality of event parameters based, at least in part, on measurements made by the plurality of sensors, the event parameters identifying arrival times of the emissions at each of the plurality of sensors. Methods further include generating, using the processor, an output identifying an estimate of a position of the system event within the power component, the estimate being generated based, at least in part, on the arrival times identified by the plurality of event parameters.
