The high-yield direct synthesis of dimethyl ether from CO 2 and H 2 in a dry reaction environment

Direct dimethyl ether (DME) synthesis from CO 2 and H 2 is considered a promising production route. However, this process is thermodynamically and kinetically restricted by the presence of water as a byproduct. In this study, a water-conduction membrane was incorporated into the direct DME synthesis reactor to generate a dry reaction environment. In the absence of water, the activities of the CO 2 hydrogenation catalyst (CZA) and methanol dehydration catalyst (HZSM-5) were boosted 4- and 10-fold, respectively, and single-pass CO 2 conversion of up to 73.4%, far beyond equilibrium, and DME yields of up to 54.5% were obtained. Moreover, the good protection of the catalysts against fast deactivation was demonstrated.

Boosted piezoelectricity with excellent thermal stability in tetragonal NaNbO 3 -based ceramics

The realization of high piezoelectric performance and excellent temperature stability simultaneously in Pb-free ceramics is the key for replacing Pb-containing perovskites in the industry. In this study, large piezoelectric performance (d 33 = 354 pC N –1 ) was achieved in a wide temperature sinterable potassium-free NaNbO 3 –BaTiO 3 –BaSnO 3 system, which is twice more than the piezoelectricity found in NaNbO 3 –BaTiO 3 binary ceramics. Structural refinement of high-energy synchrotron powder diffraction data suggests a single tetragonal structure with P4bm symmetry for the studied NaNbO 3 -based Pb-free ceramic. The results indicate that the small axial ratio favoring polarization reorientation benefits strong piezoelectricity, while the large oxygen octahedron tilt enhances the stability of the P4bm structure during the changing temperature according to the in situ high-energy synchrotron X-ray diffraction measurements and provides the foundation for the excellent thermal stability (20–100 °C) of the piezoelectric properties. Furthermore, a single tetragonal phase with a tiny axial ratio and large oxygen octahedron tilt effectively balances the piezoelectricity and thermal stability in Pb-free systems.

A macromolecular assembly directed ceramic aerogel monolith material

Ceramic aerogels exhibit remarkable thermal insulation for energy efficient building applications, while it is indispensable to understand their nanoporous structure evolution to control their thermal regulation performance. In this study, we design and synthesize a lightweight porous silica aerogel monolithic material, and demonstrate its thermal insulation performance regulated by the morphology of porous nanostructures controlled by surfactant induced self-assembly. The micelle networks and in situ gas bubble formation guide the formation of uniform pores in the as-synthesized monolith, which shows superior thermal and acoustic insulation and robust mechanical stability with a thermal conductivity of 0.032 W m –1 K –1 , a soundproof performance improvement by 17% at a frequency of 800 Hz, and a 1.3 MPa compressive strength with a Young's modulus of 15 MPa. Lastly, these findings provide a new route to manufacture low-cost aerogel monolithic insulation materials for energy efficient building applications.

Anionic redox reaction triggered by trivalent Al 3+ in P3-Na 0.65 Mn 0.5 Al 0.5 O 2

P3-Na 0.65 Mn 0.5 Al 0.5 O 2 (NMAO) has been synthesized and studied as a cathode for sodium batteries, and shows anionic redox reaction (ARR) and exhibits a first charging capacity of ~110 mA h g -1 . The electrochemical mechanism of NMAO was comprehensively investigated by X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The reversible oxygen redox behaviour is triggered by Al 3+ through oxygen quasi non-bonding states generated by the relatively ionic interaction of Al and O. Furthermore, the presence of Al 3+ can suppress oxygen loss in ARR. Overall, this work provides new insights into the design and mechanism of anionic redox active cathode materials.

Tandem synthesis of tetrahydroquinolines and identification of the reaction network by operando NMR

The study of the reaction mechanism and complex network for heterogeneously catalyzed tandem reactions is challenging but can guide reaction design and optimization. Here, we describe a case study using bifunctional metal–organic framework supported Pd nanoparticles (Pd/UiO-66(HCl)) for the one-pot tandem synthesis of substituted tetrahydroquinolines via the Claisen–Schmidt condensation and reductive intramolecular cyclization. The directly observed evolution of intermediates and products, including reactive species containing hydroxylamine group and unstable intermediate 2-phenyl-3,4-dihydroquinoline, was enabled by operando magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance studies under 50 bar H 2 . The reaction network of the tandem reaction is deduced based on reaction kinetic information obtained from the operando study. The optimized procedure was applied to various acetophenone and nitrobenzaldehyde derivatives carrying different functional groups, and eight valuable substituted tetrahydroquinolines were obtained in moderate to good yields. This work provides a molecular-level understanding of the catalytic system and brings up new opportunities for efficient and sustainable synthesis of medicinally relevant building blocks.

Local chemical fluctuation mediated ultra-sluggish martensitic transformation in high-entropy intermetallics

Superelasticity associated with martensitic transformation has found a broad range of engineering applications, such as in low-temperature devices in the aerospace industry. Nevertheless, the narrow working temperature range and strong temperature sensitivity of the first-order phase transformation significantly hinder the usage of smart metallic components in many critical areas. Here, we scrutinized the phase transformation behavior and mechanical properties of multicomponent B2-structured intermetallic compounds. Strikingly, the (TiZrHfCuNi) 83.3 Co 16.7 high-entropy intermetallics (HEIs) show superelasticity with high critical stress over 500 MPa, high fracture strength of over 2700 MPa, and small temperature sensitivity in a wide range of temperatures over 220 K. The complex sublattice occupation in these HEIs facilitates formation of nano-scaled local chemical fluctuation and then elastic confinement, which leads to an ultra-sluggish martensitic transformation. The thermal activation of the martensitic transformation was fully suppressed while the stress activation is severely retarded with an enhanced threshold stress over a wide temperature range. Moreover, the high configurational entropy also results in a small entropy change during phase transformation, consequently giving rise to the low temperature sensitivity of the superelasticity stress. Furthermore, our findings may provide a new paradigm for the development of advanced superelastic alloys, and shed new insights into understanding of martensitic transformation in general.

Inverse deep learning methods and benchmarks for artificial electromagnetic material design

In this work we investigate the use of deep inverse models (DIMs) for designing artificial electromagnetic materials (AEMs) – such as metamaterials, photonic crystals, and plasmonics – to achieve some desired scattering properties (e.g., transmission or reflection spectrum). DIMs are deep neural networks (i.e., deep learning models) that are specially-designed to solve ill-posed inverse problems. There has recently been tremendous growth in the use of DIMs for solving AEM design problems however there has been little comparison of these approaches to examine their absolute and relative performance capabilities. In this work we compare eight state-of-the-art DIMs on three unique AEM design problems, including two models that are novel to the AEM community. Our results indicate that DIMs can rapidly produce accurate designs to achieve a custom desired scattering on all three problems. Although no single model always performs best, the Neural-Adjoint approach achieves the best overall performance across all problem settings. As a final contribution we show that not all AEM design problems are ill-posed, and in such cases a conventional deep neural network can perform better than DIMs. We recommend that a deep neural network is always employed as a simple baseline approach when addressing AEM design problems. Furthermore, we publish python code for our AEM simulators and our DIMs to enable easy replication of our results, and benchmarking of new DIMs by the AEM community.

Dual functionality of over-lithiated NMC for high energy silicon-based lithium-ion batteries

Owing to their high specific capacity and suitably low operating potential, silicon-based anodes are an attractive alternative to graphite in next-generation lithium-ion batteries. However, silicon anodes suffer from low initial coulombic efficiency and fast capacity decay, limiting their widespread application. Pre-lithiation strategies are highly appealing to compensate for irreversible active lithium loss and to boost the cell energy density. In this work, we maximize the cell energy density by direct pre-lithiation of the NMC (LiNi 0.5 Mn 0.3 Co 0.2 O 2 ) cathode to Li 1+x NMCO 2 without introducing inactive deadweight to either electrode. First, we demonstrate that Li 1+x NMCO 2 can be synthesized chemically, via reaction between NMC and lithium napthalide, and electrochemically. The NMC cathode is tolerant of a one-time over-lithiation up to 60 mA h g NMC -1 , giving capacity retention on par with untreated NMC in half cell electrochemical cycling. Using synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy (ex situ) and diffraction (in situ), we demonstrate that higher amounts of over-lithiation lead to local structure distortion – driven by transition metal reduction to Jahn–Teller active Mn 3+ and Co 2+ – as well as bulk structural hysteresis during over-lithiation and layer “buckling” that increases the amount of lithium extracted from the structure in the charged state. The Li 1+x NMCO 2 with low-to-moderate over-lithiation capacity (23, 46, and 70 mA h g NMC -1 ) is proven to be a highly effective dual-purpose lithium source and cathode material in full cell tests with a commercially relevant Si–graphite anode. These cells show higher capacity, superior cycle life, and improved coulombic efficiencies when compared to those with stoichiometric NMC cathodes. Finally, this study introduces a new and simple method to pre-lithiate layered transition metal oxide cathodes, opening up new possibilities for the development of high energy density lithium-ion batteries with next-generation anodes.

Oxygen redox chemistry in P2-Na 0.6 Li 0.11 Fe 0.27 Mn 0.62 O 2 cathode for high-energy Na-ion batteries

Owing to the abundance of raw material reserves and low cost, Na-ion batteries (NIBs) have successfully gained widespread attention from academic and industrial communities in the past few decades. However, the insufficient cathode energy density is still one of the critical bottlenecks restricting the development of NIBs. Following a strategy of introducing Li+ into the transition-metal (TM) layer to enhance the oxygen redox reaction, a novel layered cathode material P2-Na 0.6 Li 0.11 Fe 0.27 Mn 0.62 O 2 (NLFMO) was designed and successfully synthesized. This NLFMO cathode not only delivers a large initial reversible capacity of 207.3 mA h g -1 , but also shows a good cycling performance (104.2 mA h g -1 after 80 cycles) and rate capability (126.2 mA h g -1 at 1C). The ultrahigh capacity is contributed by both cationic (Fe 3+ /Fe 4+ and Mn 3+ /Mn 4+ ) and partially reversible anionic redox (O 2- /O n- ) reactions, revealed by in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. Moreover, no detrimental P2–O2 phase transition was observed in ex situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, confirming the high structural stability during Na + deintercalation/intercalation processes. These results provide valuable information about the high-energy density layered cathode materials based on anionic redox reactions for NIBs.

Approaching theoretical specific capacity of iron-rich lithium iron silicate using graphene-incorporation and fluorine-doping

Lithium iron silicate, Li 2 FeSiO 4 , is a promising cathode material for lithium ion batteries due to its high theoretical specific capacity, earth abundance, low cost, and environmental friendliness. The challenges of Li 2 FeSiO 4 as a practical cathode material are (1) the low electronic and ionic conductivity and (2) the low discharge voltage. The approach of incorporating graphene sheets into the nanostructure of Li 2 FeSiO 4 is used for dealing with the low conductivities while fluorine doping is intended to increase the discharge voltage. The fluorine-doped and graphene-incorporated iron-rich lithium iron silicate F-LFSO/G nanomaterials were successfully synthesized using a facile/efficient hydrothermal method with excellent performance, 328.43 mA h g -1 at 0.1C rate, approaching their theoretical specific capacity, 99% of 331 mA h g -1 . This clearly reveals that the reversible (de)lithiation of 2 Li + ions per F-LFSO has been realized as a result of these approaches. The (de)lithiation process has been studied using in operando high energy synchrotron X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy aided by theoretical modeling, which reveals that F doping deeply changes the O electron configuration in F-LFSO, and consequently makes the Li + ion transfer easier, while the reversible redox of oxygen can be utilized to achieve high specific capacity.

Diffusion characteristics of water molecules in a lamellar structure formed by triblock copolymers

The distribution and diffusion of water molecules are playing important roles in determining self-assembly and transport properties of polymeric systems. Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) experiments and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation have been applied to understand the distribution of water molecules and their dynamics in the lamellar membrane formed by Pluronic L62 block copolymers. Penetration of water molecules into the polyethylene oxide (PEO) layers of the membranes has been estimated using scattering length density (SLD) profiles obtained from SANS measurements, which agree well with the molecular distribution observed from MD simulations. The water diffusion coefficient at different regions of the lamellar membrane was further investigated using MD simulation. The diffusion characteristic shows a transition from normal to anomalous diffusion as the position of the water molecule changes from the bulk to PEO and to the polypropylene oxide (PPO) layer. Here we find that water molecules within the PEO or PPO layers follow subdiffusive dynamics, which can be interpreted by the model of fractional Brownian motion.

Trapping Ca + inside a molecular cavity: computational study of the potential energy surfaces for Ca + -[ n ]cycloparaphenylene, n = 5–12

Ion trap quantum computing utilizes electronic states of atomic ions such as Ca + to encode information on to a qubit. To explore the fundamental properties of Ca + inside molecular cavities, we describe here a computational study of Ca + bound inside neutral [n]-cycloparaphenylenes (n = 5–12), often referred to as “nanohoops”. This ab initio study characterizes optimized structures, harmonic vibrational frequencies, potential energy surfaces, and ion molecular orbital distortion as functions of increasing nanohoop size. Here the results of this work provide a first step in guiding experimental studies of the spectroscopy of these ion-molecular cavity complexes.
