The highly exothermic hydrogen abstraction reaction H 2 Te + OH → H 2 O + TeH: comparison with analogous reactions for H 2 Se and H 2 S

The “gold standard” CCSD(T) method is adopted along with the correlation consistent basis sets up to aug-cc-pV5Z-PP to study the mechanism of the hydrogen abstraction reaction H 2 Te + OH. Here, the predicted geometries and vibrational frequencies for reactants and products are in good agreement with the available experimental results. With the ZPVE corrections, the transition state in the favorable pathway of this reaction energetically lies 1.2 kcal mol -1 below the reactants, which is lower than the analogous relative energies for the H 2 Se + OH reaction (-0.7 kcal mol -1 ), the H 2 S + OH reaction (+0.8 kcal mol -1 ) and the H 2 O + OH reaction (+9.0 kcal mol -1 ). Accordingly, the exothermic reaction energies for these related reactions are predicted to be 47.8 (H 2 Te), 37.7 (H 2 Se), 27.1 (H 2 S), and 0.0 (H 2 O) kcal mol -1 , respectively. Geometrically, the low-lying reactant complexes for H 2 Te + OH and H 2 Se + OH are two-center three-electron hemibonded structures, whereas those for H 2 S + OH and H 2 O + OH are hydrogen-bonded. With ZPVE and spin–orbit coupling corrections, the relative energies for the reactant complex, transition state, product complex, and the products for the H 2 Te + OH reaction are estimated to be -13.1, -1.0, -52.0, and -52.6 kcal mol -1 , respectively. Finally, twenty-eight DFT functionals have been tested systematically to assess their ability in describing the potential energy surface of the H 2 Te + OH reaction. The best of these functionals for the corresponding energetics are -9.9, -1.4, -46.4, and -45.4 kcal mol -1 (MPWB1K), or -13.1, -2.4, -57.1, and -54.6 kcal mol -1 (M06-2X), respectively.

Strong metal–support bonding enhanced thermal stability in Au–Al 2 O 3 core–shell nanowires characterized by in situ transmission electron microscopy

In this study, the thermal stability of Au–Al 2 O 3 core–shell and Au nanowires was investigated by in situ scanning transmission electron microscopy and other techniques. Here, the nanowires were synthesized by the helium droplets method and deposited on various substrates. The in situ characterization of Au–Al 2 O 3 thermal stability demonstrated a substantially enhanced stability as compared to that of pure Au nanowires, which can be a transformative approach to design more durable Au-based nanocatalysts. Our study also revealed the existence of strong metal–support bonding in the Au/Al 2 O 3 system.

XANES analysis of phosphate glasses melted with Tb 4 O 7 and SnO: evaluating the impact of valence states on structural, thermal, and luminescent properties

Barium phosphate glasses were prepared with 0.5 mol% Tb 4 O 7 added alongside SnO up to 5 mol% with the purpose of evaluating the resulting terbium and tin oxidation states and their impact on glass structural, thermal, and luminescent properties. In this work, following material synthesis by melt-quenching, the composition-structure–property investigation was pursued encompassing measurements by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES), Raman spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dilatometry, and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. While XRD confirmed the amorphous nature of the glasses, results from XANES indicated that terbium occurs as terbium(III) with a predisposition for tin to exist as tin(IV) which decreased at high SnO content. The structural as well as the thermal properties appeared to be mostly impacted by the presence of tin(IV). Specifically, glass depolymerization was indicated to be induced by Sn 4+ ions, and their concentration was observed to correlate with glass transition and softening temperatures. On the other hand, the tin(II) remnants were observed to exert an impact on the luminescent properties shifting light emission from the green towards the blue-green (cyan). It is indicated that Tb 4 O 7 reacting to produce Tb 2 O 3 supports the oxidation of tin(II) to tin(IV) which in turn dominates the physical properties. However, this was somewhat circumvented at the highest SnO content wherein tin(IV) appeared to be lower.

Photo-induced structural dynamics of o -nitrophenol by ultrafast electron diffraction

The photo-induced dynamics of o-nitrophenol, particularly its photolysis, has garnered significant scientific interest as a potential source of nitrous acid in the atmosphere. Although the photolysis products and preceding photo-induced electronic structure dynamics have been investigated extensively, the nuclear dynamics accompanying the non-radiative relaxation of o-nitrophenol on the ultrafast timescale, which include an intramolecular proton transfer step, have not been experimentally resolved. Herein, we present a direct observation of the ultrafast nuclear motions mediating photo-relaxation using ultrafast electron diffraction. Here, this work spatiotemporally resolves the loss of planarity which enables access to a conical intersection between the first excited state and the ground state after the proton transfer step, on the femtosecond timescale and with sub-Angstrom resolution. Our observations, supported by ab initio multiple spawning simulations, provide new insights into the proton transfer mediated relaxation mechanism in o-nitrophenol.

Reversible Cl/Cl - redox in a spinel Mn 3 O 4 electrode

A unique prospect of using halides as charge carriers is the possibility of the halides undergoing anodic redox behaviors when serving as charge carriers for the charge-neutrality compensation of electrodes. However, the anodic conversion of halides to neutral halogen species has often been irreversible at room temperature due to the emergence of diatomic halogen gaseous products. Here, we report that chloride ions can be reversibly converted to near-neutral atomic chlorine species in the Mn 3 O 4 electrode at room temperature in a highly concentrated chloride-based aqueous electrolyte. Notably, the Zn 2+ cations inserted in the first discharge and trapped in the Mn 3 O 4 structure create an environment to stabilize the converted chlorine atoms within the structure. Characterization results suggest that the Cl/Cl - redox is responsible for the observed large capacity, as the oxidation state of Mn barely changes upon charging. Computation results corroborate that the converted chlorine species exist as polychloride monoanions, e.g., [Cl 3 ] - and [Cl 5 ] - , inside the Zn 2+ -trapped Mn 3 O 4 , and the presence of polychloride species is confirmed experimentally. Our results point to the halogen plating inside electrode lattices as a new charge-storage mechanism.

Boosting the performance of reversible solid oxide electrochemical cells with a novel hybrid oxygen electrode, Pr 1.39 Ba 0.14 Sr 0.53 Co 1.48 Fe 0.76 O 6- δ -Ba 0.66 Sr 0.34 CoO 3- δ

Solid oxide electrochemical cells (SOECs) stand out as a highly promising clean energy technology that offers several benefits, showing significant potential to play a pivotal role in the transition towards a sustainable and low-carbon energy future. SOECs can efficiently convert the chemical energy stored in fuels to electricity in fuel cell mode, and produce various chemicals from abundant feedstocks (e.g., CO 2 , H 2 O) and intermittent solar/wind-based renewable electricity. Despite extensive efforts that have been devoted to designing novel materials and optimizing SOEC manufacturing processes, aiming to achieve enhanced energy efficiency, the current SOECs still suffer from poor performance, which is mainly due to the sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics. To address this challenge, in this work, we have successfully designed an in situ formed hybrid oxygen electrode material (Pr 1.39 Ba 0.14 Sr 0.53 Co 1.48 Fe 0.76 O 6- δ -Ba 0.66 Sr 0.34 CoO 3- δ ), which significantly improves the surface oxygen exchange coefficient and bulk oxygen-ion diffusion coefficient, enhancing the OER and ORR electrocatalytic activities. Further, the SOECs equipped with this newly developed oxygen electrode achieved exceptional performance for power generation using both hydrogen and propane as the fuels. At 750 °C, a peak power density of 2.4 W cm -2 was obtained with H 2 as the fuel. Additionally, the SOECs attain unprecedented performance in steam electrolysis mode. A current density of 4.4 A cm -2 was achieved at 1.3 V and 750 °C, which represents the highest performance among all yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte-based SOECs. The SOECs also deliver remarkable stability during the accelerated stability testing, highlighting the great potential of Pr 1.39 Ba 0.14 Sr 0.53 Co 1.48 Fe 0.76 O 6- δ -Ba 0.66 Sr 0.34 CoO 3- δ as a high-performance oxygen electrode for next generation SOECs.

Floating zone crystal growth, structure, and properties of a cubic Li 5.5 La 3 Nb 1.5 Zr 0.5 O 12 garnet-type lithium-ion conductor

As a promising candidate for solid-state electrolytes in Li-ion batteries, the garnet-type Li-ion conductor series Li 5+x La 3 Nb 2-x Zr x O 12 (LLNZO) (0 ≤ x ≤ 2) exhibits high ionic conductivity at room temperature. However, no previous single-crystal growth or characterization has been reported for LLNZO compositions 0 ≤ x ≤ 1. To obtain a complete understanding of the trend in the structure–property relationship in this class of materials, we used the floating zone (FZ) method to grow a single crystal of Li 5.5 La 3 Nb 1.5 Zr 0.5 O 12 that was 4 mm in diameter and 10 mm in length. Using Laue neutron single-crystal diffraction, two distinct Li sites were observed: tetrahedral 24d and octahedral 96h sites. The maximum entropy method (MEM) based on neutron single-crystal diffraction data was used to map Li nuclear density and estimate that the bottleneck of Li transport exists between neighboring tetrahedral and octahedral sites, and that Li is delocalized between split octahedral sites. Room-temperature Li-ion conductivity in Li 5.5 La 3 Nb 1.5 Zr 0.5 O 12 measured with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was 1.37 × 10 -4 S cm -1 . The Li migration activation energy was estimated to be 0.50 eV from EIS and 0.47 eV from dielectric relaxation measurements. The Li-ion jump attempt rate was estimated to be 1.47 × 10 12 Hz while the time scale of successful migration is 10 -7 to 10 -6 s.

Real-time observation of the exchange process between H 2 O and NO in the metal–organic framework Ni-MOF-74

Molecular exchange is a common step occurring in many technological processes such as competitive adsorption, chemical separation, capture, delivery, and release. However, the underlying principle is not fully understood, especially in nanoconfined environments where the energetics and kinetics of such processes can deviate from that on flat surfaces. In this study, we unravel the mechanism of a molecular exchange process by studying the displacement of NO by H 2 O in Ni-MOF-74 in real-time using in situ infrared spectroscopy combined with ab initio calculations. We show that weakly bound H 2 O gradually displaces strongly bound NO on the metal sites by first weakening the M–N bond through forming H-bond and then moving the NO away so that it eventually desorbs. Interestingly, we further find that additional water facilitates this exchange by significantly lowering the kinetic barrier associated with this process as well as the overall energy of the final state. Although our study focuses on Ni-MOF-74, we believe that our finding and explanation of unexpected exchange phenomena—where strongly adsorbed molecules are apparently easily displaced by much weaker bound H 2 O—is applicable to a much larger group of frameworks and will be helpful in designing and improving MOFs for real-world applications where humidity is often present.

Elucidation of Ce/Zr ratio effects on the physical properties and catalytic performance of CuO x /Ce y Zr 1− y O 2 catalysts

Although cerium oxide (CeO 2 ) is widely used as a catalyst support, its limited defect sites and surface oxygen vacancy/mobility should be improved. The incorporation of zirconium (Zr) in the cerium (Ce) lattice is shown to increase the number of oxygen vacancies and improve catalytic activity. Using a fixed surface density (SD) of copper (∼2.3 Cu atoms per nm 2 ) as a surface species, the role of the support (Ce y Zr 1−y O 2 (y = 1.0, 0.9, 0.6, 0.5, and 0.0)) and defect site effects in the CO oxidation reaction was investigated. Spectroscopic (e.g., Raman, XRD, XPS) and microscopic (e.g., SEM-EDX, HR-TEM) characterization techniques were applied to evaluate the defect sites, crystallite size, lattice parameters, chemical composition, oxidation states of elements and microstructure of the catalysts. Here, the CO oxidation reaction with varied CO : O 2 ratios (1 : 5, 1 : 1, and 1 : 0.5 (stoichiometric)) was used as a model reaction to describe the relationship between the structure and the catalytic performance of each catalyst. Based on the characterization results of Ce y Zr 1−y O 2 materials, the addition of Zr causes physical and chemical changes to the overall material. The inclusion of Zr into the structure of CeO 2 decreased the overall lattice parameter of the catalyst and increased the number of defect sites. The prepared catalysts were able to reach complete CO conversion (∼100%) at low temperature conditions (<200 °C), each showing varied reaction activity. The difference in CO oxidation activity was then analyzed and related to the structure, wherein Cu loading, surface oxygen vacancies, reduction–oxidation ability, CuO x –support interaction and oxygen mobility in the catalyst were the crucial descriptors.

Snowflake relocated Cu 2 O electrocatalyst on an Ag backbone template for the production of liquid C 2+ chemicals from CO 2

In this study, we performed the CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) using a structural composite catalyst of cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) and silver (Ag) that was simultaneously electrodeposited. While the underneath Ag electrodeposits maintained their spiky backbone structures even after the CO 2 RR, the Cu 2 O deposits were reduced to Cu(111) and relocated on the backbone template. Here, the structural changes in Cu 2 O to Cu increase the active area of the Cu–Ag interface, resulting in a remarkable production rate of 125.01 μmol h -1 of liquid C 2+ chemicals via the stabilization of the C–C coupling of the key intermediate species of acetaldehyde. This study provides new insights into designing a bimetallic catalyst for producing sustainable C 2+ products from CO 2 without any selectivity towards the production of methane.

Ultra-stable and poison tolerant oxygen evolution activity enabled by surface In 2 O 3- x (OH) y of Co 3 In 2 S 2 large single crystals

Water is an earth-abundant source for clean hydrogen production via electrochemical water electrolysis (WE). However, the surface poisoning that occurs in aqueous electrolytes drastically deactivates the electrocatalytic performance of electrodes. Here, in this study, we report electrochemically formed In 2 O 3-x (OH) y on the surface of a large (1–1.5 mm long, 0.5–0.6 mm wide and 0.3–0.5 mm thick) single crystal of Weyl semimetal Co 3 In 2 S 2 (Co 3 In 2 S 2 /In 2 O 3-x (OH) y ) as an ultra-stable and poison tolerant electrode for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in 1 M KOH, addressing a bottleneck in WE. The OER activity of the powder form of Co 3 In 2 S 2 is limited by its aerophilic nature. Remarkably, the single-crystal electrodes maintained their high activity for a continuous operational period of 5 h in 1 M KOH electrolyte with/without 10 mM strong surface-poisoning ligands i.e., potassium cyanide, bipyridine, and ethylenediaminetetraacetate disodium salt. The electrodes exhibited stable OER activity for 1000 h at 100 mA cm -2 (1.73 V vs. RHE). The temperature-dependent OER polarization curves (10–70 °C) unambiguously revealed surface poisoning through the suppression of precatalytic Co-redox peaks on the bipyridine poisoned electrode, which led to the stabilization of surface Co-sites. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses of pristine, poisoned and post-electrocatalytic single-crystal Co 3 In 2 S 2 electrodes revealed the existence of an In 2 O 3-x (OH) y surface phase, which could be the potential heterostructure for the origin of ultra-stable and poison tolerant OER activity.

Probing the proton exchange kinetics of BaZr 0.1 Ce 0.7 Y 0.1 Yb 0.1 O 3− δ ceramic electrolyte by operando diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy

Proton exchange kinetics plays an important role in governing the performance of intermediate-temperature protonic ceramic electrolysis cells (PCECs) for hydrogen production. Our understanding of the nature of the surface hydration reaction at the single-cell level, however, remains very limited, hampering further efficiency improvements. Here, in this study, we developed a custom operando diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) platform that operates under high temperature and steam conditions with applied bias. Quantitative investigations of surface H 2 O/D 2 O isotope exchange in a BaZr 0.1 Ce 0.7 Y 0.1 Yb 0.1 O 3−δ (BZCYYb1711) protonic electrolyte-based single cell were conducted under different applied voltages using this DRIFTS platform, to gain molecular-level insight into hydration kinetics. The findings show that the application of an external voltage significantly enhances the surface proton exchange rate, decreasing the apparent activation energy from 29.1 kJ mol −1 at open-circuit voltage (OCV) to 6.8 kJ mol −1 at 1.3 V. In addition, distinct voltage-induced spectral shifts in O–D vibrations point to dynamic changes in surface hydration. These findings demonstrate a sensitive spectroscopic platform for probing interfacial proton processes and reveal strong electrochemical control over surface proton kinetics, offering new opportunities for probing electrolyte hydration behavior in PCECs.

Understanding the Mn dissolution mechanism in rock salt-type Li 4 Mn 2 O 5 cathodes

For the first time, a detailed exploration of Mn dissolution in disordered rock salt (DRX) Li 4 Mn 2 O 5 is presented. Herein, we apply a suite of synchrotron and lab scale X-ray techniques to both the cathode and the separator harvested from pristine, charged, or cycled lithium half-cells containing the disordered rock salt (DRX) material Li 4 Mn 2 O 5 , in order to understand Mn dissolution processes throughout charging and discharging. Previous research has hypothesized two concurrent effects that may drive Mn dissolution in cells during cycling: acid-induced disproportionation of Jahn–Teller active Mn 3+ and structural rearrangement of the cathode lattice. Through depth probing of the Mn oxidation state in both the cathode and separator via soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), hard XAS, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) in progressive states-of-charge, as well as extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) analysis of the local Mn environment, the primary driving force of Mn dissolution is determined to be high-voltage structural rearrangement above 4.2 V. Mn dissolution is, additionally, a main source of capacity fade in Li 4 Mn 2 O 5 DRX cells, which retain only 59% capacity after 20 cycles.

Iridium-related complexes in Czochralski-grown β-Ga 2 O 3

Gallium oxide is a promising semiconductor for its potential as a material in the field of power electronics. The effects of iridium impurities on undoped, Mg-doped, and Ca-doped gallium oxides were investigated with IR spectroscopy. In undoped and Ca-doped β-Ga 2 O 3 , IR peaks at 3313, 3450, and 3500 cm -1 are tentatively assigned to O–H bond-stretching modes of IrH complexes. Mg-, Ca-, and Fe-doped samples show an Ir 4+ electronic transition feature at 5148 cm -1 . By measuring the strength of this feature vs photoexcitation, the Ir 3+/4+ donor level was determined to lie 2.2–2.3 eV below the conduction band minimum. Ga 2 O 3 :Mg also has a range of sidebands between 5100 and 5200 cm -1 , attributed to IrMg pairs. Polarized IR measurements show that the 5248 cm -1 peak is anisotropic, weakest for light polarized along the c axis, consistent with Lenyk et al. [J. Appl. Phys. 125, 045703 (2019)].

Self-trapped hole and impurity-related broad luminescence in $β$-Ga 2 O 3

Here we explore the luminescence properties of self-trapped holes and impurity-related acceptors using one-dimensional configuration coordinate diagrams derived from hybrid functional calculations. The photoluminescence spectrum of as-grown $β$-Ga 2 O 3 typically consists of a broad band in the wavelength region from ultraviolet to green and is often dominated by an impurity independent ultraviolet band that is commonly attributed to self-trapped holes. Here, we use the self-trapped hole as a benchmark to evaluate the accuracy of the theoretical defect luminescence spectra and estimate the optical properties of Mg Ga , Be Ga , Ca Ga , Cd Ga , Zn Ga , Li Ga , and N O acceptor impurities, as well as their complexes with hydrogen donors. We also explore $V$ Ga acceptors complexed with hydrogen and Si Ga donor impurities. The results show that these defects can give rise to broad luminescence bands peaking in the infrared to visible part of the spectrum, making them potential candidates for the defect origin of broad luminescence bands in $β$-Ga 2 O 3 .

Bi aliovalent substitution in Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 garnets: Structural and ionic conductivity effects

We report on the synthesis of cubic-phase garnet-type solid-state electrolytes based on Bi-doped Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO). Bi aliovalent substitution of Zr in LLZO utilizing the Pechini processing method is employed to synthesize Li 7-x La 3 Zr 2-x Bi x O 12 compounds. A strong dependence of the ionic conductivity on Bi content is observed, and under our synthesis and sintering conditions, a >100-fold increase over the un-doped sample is observed for x=0.75. Cubic-phase Li 6 La 3 Zr 1 BiO 12 compounds are generated upon annealing in air in the temperature range 650 °C-900 °C. In contrast, in the absence of Bi, the cubic garnet phase of Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 is not formed below 700 °C and a transformation to the tetragonal phase is observed at similar to 900 °C for this un-doped compound. The role of Bi in lowering the formation temperature of the garnet cubic phase and in the ionic conductivity improvements is investigated in this work. We ascribe the effect of Bi-doping on ionic conductivity increments to changes in Li + -site occupancy and lattice parameters and the reduction in the formation temperature for the cubic-phase formation to rate enhancements of the solid-state reaction. To identify the site occupancy of Bi in the garnet structure, we employ synchrotron extended x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. Our results indicate that Bi additions occupy the Zr-type sites exclusively, to within the accuracy of the measurements.
