Generation and Control of Self-Organized Nonlinear Kinetic Structures in High Energy Density Plasmas in the Presence of Intense Magnetic Fields and Ultrashort Laser Pulses

In the project we investigated mechanisms to sculpt phase space by controlling plasma instabilities. We found that linear theory, which applies in the initial growth phase of an instability, allows for initial conditions that can suppress instabilities. This provides a possible mechanism to release the energy available to an instability on demand. We developed various computational techniques that can reduce computational cost of simulations while maintaining or improving physical fidelity. We considered the Buneman instability in the presence of a ponderomotively driven plasma wave to examine the interplay between an instability and steady-state plasma response.

Photoconversion in Disordered Semiconductors: Spatial, Spectral, and Temporal Insights through Nonlinear Microscopy (Final Technical Report)

Conversion of solar photons to useable energy requires two processes to occur successfully in a light-harvesting material: 1) the initial photoexcited state must efficiently produce excited states that are free to move, and 2) those states must be transported to a new location where they can do useful work before any potential is lost as heat. The core focus of this project examined the spatial and energetic dynamics of these two primary events of photoconversion in solution-processed semiconducting materials. The electronic properties of these systems are complex and strongly influenced by the cumulative interaction of local morphology and composition, along with defects, interfaces, and trap sites. It is therefore important to interrogate these systems at the local level, where structural and compositional heterogeneity can be precisely correlated to variation in functionality. Utilizing ultrafast laser spectroscopy coupled together with optical microscopy, this project examined how excited states and free charges spatially and energetically evolve on length scales between 10 nanometers and 10 microns and on timescales from 50 femtoseconds to 1 nanosecond. Insights gained from measurements made on these characteristic length and time scales provided new insight into how macroscopic functionality in disordered photovoltaic materials emerges from the interplay of nanoscale and mesoscale interactions.

TRUST Nonlinear Dynamics (ND) Report: FY22

The objective of the Delivery Environments (DE) Testbeds to Reduce Uncertainty in Simulations and Tests (TRUST) work package, is to quantify and help increase confidence in specific areas of computational and experimental capabilities that are applicable to current and future delivery environments. More complete quantification of confidence in experimental and computational capabilities and the sufficient increase of confidence in those capabilities is critical to improving weapons engineering design, qualification, and assessment efforts that are relevant to the current and future stockpile. This work will use and provide feedback on analysis tools and experimental results databases for efficient and responsive engineering which are currently under development: engineering common model framework (ECMF), engineering quantification of margins and uncertainties (EQMU), and the test information management system (TIMS). Additionally, this work is being used to test a newly available framework in W-13, Weapons Analysis for Verified Engineering Simulation (WAVES).
