Spin fluctuations in the 112-type iron-based superconductor Ca 0.82 La 0.18 Fe 0.96 Ni 0.04 As 2

Abstract We report time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering (INS) investigations on the spin fluctuation spectrum in the 112-type iron-based superconductor (FeSC) Ca 0.82 La 0.18 Fe 0.96 Ni 0.04 As 2 (CaLa-112). In comparison to the 122-type FeSCs with a centrosymmetric tetragonal lattice structure (space group I 4 / m m m ) at room temperature and an in-plane stripe-type antiferromagnetic (AF) order at low temperature, the 112 system has a noncentrosymmetric structure (space group P 2 1 ) with additional zigzag arsenic chains between Ca/La layers and a magnetic ground state with similar wavevector Q A F but different orientations of ordered moments in the parent compounds. Our INS study clearly reveals that the in-plane dispersions and the bandwidth of spin excitations in the superconducting CaLa-112 closely resemble to those in 122 systems. While the total fluctuating moments ⟨ m 2 ⟩ ≈ 4.6 ± 0.2 μ B 2 /Fe are larger than 122 system, the dynamic correlation lengths are similar ( ξ ≈ 10 Å). These results suggest that superconductivity in iron arsenides may have a common magnetic origin under similar magnetic exchange couplings with a dual nature from local moments and itinerant electrons, despite their different magnetic patterns and lattice symmetries.

Transport characterization and pinning analysis of BaFe 1.9 Ni 0.1 As 2.05 thin films

In this paper, we report on the vortex-glass transition and superconducting performance of BaFe 1.9 Ni 0.1 As 2.05 thin films with T c = 17.8 K on CaF 2 (00 l ) single crystals by pulsed laser deposition. Atomic force microscopy characterization indicates the volumes of droplets appearing on the film surface increase with thickness and Magneto-optical imaging proves slight inhomogeneities in the current flow within the ab -plane of thin film. The thin films show a transport current density J c of ~1.14 MA cm –2 in self-field, and 0.34 and 0.28 MA cm –2 for H // c and H // ab up to 9 T at 4.2 K. Pinning mechanism associated with the fluctuations in the mean free path of the charge carries is found to be dominant in the thin films. The vortex-glass (VG) to vortex-liquid phase transition is identified in terms of the plots of the logarithmic derivative of the resistivity curves under different fields, allowing us to deduce the values of the VG transition temperature T g , and the critical exponent s . The ρ – T curves are well scaled by VG theory. A phase diagram combining the VG transition temperature, irreversibility field and upper critical field is constructed.

Understanding vortex dynamics in CaK(Fe,Ni) 4 As 4 and Ba(Fe,Co) 2 As 2 single crystals under the influence of random point disorder

We report on the influence of doping on vortex dynamics in 3 MeV proton-irradiated single crystals of CaK(Fe 1–x Ni x ) 4 As 4 (1144, x = 0.015, 0.025, and 0.03) and Ba(Fe 1–x Co x ) 2 As 2 (x = 0.04, 0.062, 0.066 and 0.074). Non-irradiated crystals of the 1144 system display superconducting critical temperatures ranging from 31 K for x = 0.015–20.5 K, as doping increases to 0.03. On the other hand, pristine crystals of the 122 system show T c values between 14.6 and 23.6 K, with the maximum T c occurring at intermediate doping levels. The fluence was set at 3 × 10 16 p cm –2 , resulting in a decrease in the T c by around 1.5 K for all samples and significantly affecting the vortex dynamics by reducing the flux creep relaxation compared to previously reported values for unirradiated crystals. Parameters such as vortex pinning energy U 0 and the glassy exponent μ dependencies on doping and magnetic field strength are identified. For the 1144 system, U 0 reaches values approaching 500 K for small fields in samples with T c = 29.3 K (x = 0.015), systematically decreasing to around 200 K as T c falls below 20 K. Furthermore, U 0 decreases as the field increases to 3 T for the same sample, varying from approximately 250 K to 100 K as T c decreases. These changes are typically accompanied by modifications in μ, gradually increasing from values around 1 towards 1.5, corresponding to small bundle relaxation in the collective creep theory. Despite differences in the substitutional disorder and magnetic phase diagram with respect to the 1144 system, the results for 122 single crystals follow a similar tendency in which U 0 usually reduces and μ increase rise as the applied magnetic field is increased. Due to moderate U 0 in these systems (few hundreds of kelvins), the resulting decay of persistent current at liquid helium temperatures is primarily determined by a balance between U 0 and bundle size contribution. Furthermore, these findings provide valuable insights for potential applications of these systems, particularly in the context of intrinsic superconducting parameters and the resulting pinning landscape.

Inelastic neutron scattering study of the anisotropic S = 1 spin chain [ Ni ( HF 2 ) ( 3 – Clpyridine ) 4 ] BF 4

[Ni(HF 2 )(3–Clpyridine) 4 ]BF 4 (NBCT) is a one-dimensional, S = 1 spin chain material that shows no magnetic neutron Bragg peaks down to temperatures of 0.1 K. Previous work identified NBCT as being in the Haldane phase and near a quantum phase transition as a function of D/J to the large-D quantum paramagnet phase (QPM), where D is the axial single-ion anisotropy and J is the intrachain superexchange. Herein, inelastic neutron scattering results are presented on partially deuterated, 11B-enriched NBCT polycrystalline samples in zero magnetic field and down to temperatures of 0.3 K. Comparison to density matrix renormalization group calculations yields D/J = 1.51 and a significant rhombic single-ion anisotropy E (E/D ≈ 0.03, E/J ≈ 0.05). Here, these D, J, and E values place NBCT in the large-D QPM phase but precipitously near a quantum phase transition to a long-range ordered phase.

Symmetry crossover in layered MPS 3 complexes (M=Mn, Fe, Ni) via near-field infrared spectroscopy

In this paper, we employ synchrotron-based near-field infrared spectroscopy to reveal the vibrational properties of bulk, few-sheet, and single-sheet members of the MPS 3 (M=Mn, Fe, Ni) family of materials and compare our findings with complementary lattice dynamics calculations. MnPS 3 and the Fe analog are similar in terms of their symmetry crossovers, from C2/ m to P $\bar{3}$1 m , as the monolayer is approached. These states differ as to the presence of a C 3 rotation around the metal center. On the other hand, NiPS 3 does not show a symmetry crossover, and the lack of a B u symmetry mode near 450 cm -1 suggests that C 3 rotational symmetry is already present, even in the bulk material. We discuss these findings in terms of local symmetry and temperature effects as well as the curious relationship between these symmetry transformations and those that take place under pressure.

Magnetism and its coexistence with superconductivity in CaK(Fe 0.949 Ni 0.051 ) 4 As 4 : Muon spin rotation/relaxation studies

Here, the magnetic response of Ca K ( Fe 0.949 Ni 0.051 ) 4 As 4 was investigated by means of the muon spin rotation/relaxation. The long-range commensurate magnetic order sets in below the Néel temperature T N = 50.0 ( 5 ) K. The density-functional theory calculations have identified three possible muon stopping sites. The experimental data were found to be consistent with only one type of magnetic structure, namely, the long-range magnetic spin-vortex-crystal order with the hedgehog motif within the a b plane and the antiferromagnetic stacking along the c direction. The value of the ordered magnetic moment at T ≈ 3 K was estimated to be m Fe = 0.38 ( 11 ) μ B ( μ B is the Bohr magneton). A microscopic coexistence of magnetic and superconducting phases accompanied by a reduction of the magnetic order parameter below the superconducting transition temperature T c ≃ 9 K is observed. Comparison with 11, 122, and 1144 families of Fe-based pnictides points to existence of correlation between the reduction of the magnetic order parameter at T → 0 and the ratio of the transition temperatures T c / T N . Such correlations were found to be described by Machida's model for coexistence of itinerant spin-density-wave magnetism and superconductivity [K. Machida, J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 50 , 2195 (1981) ; S. L. Bud'ko et al. , Phys. Rev. B 98 , 144520 (2018) ].

Comparative many-body study of Pr 4 Ni 3 O 8 and NdNiO 2

We study the many-body electronic structure of the stoichiometric and electron-doped trilayer nickelate Pr4Ni 3 O 8 in comparison to that of the stoichiometric and hole-doped infinite layer nickelate NdNiO 2 within the framework of density functional plus dynamical mean field theory, noting that Pr4Ni 3 O 8 has the same nominal carrier concentration as NdNiO2 doped to a level of 1/3 holes/Ni. In this work, we find that the correlated Ni-3$\textit{d}$ shells of both of these low valence nickelates have similar many-body configurations with correlations dominated by the $d_{x^2 - y^2}$ orbital. Additionally, when compared at the same nominal carrier concentration, the materials exhibit similar many-body electronic structures, self energies, and correlation strengths, but differ in Fermiology. Compared to cuprates, these materials are closer to the Mott-Hubbard regime due to their larger charge transfer energies. Moreover, doping involves the charge reservoir provided by the rare earth 5$\textit{d}$ electrons, as opposed to cuprates where it is realized via the oxygen 2$\textit{p}$ electrons.

Magnetic excitations in the double-perovskite iridates La 2 M IrO 6 ( M = Co , Ni , and Zn ) mediated by 3 d – 5 d hybridization

By performing resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements at the Ir L 3 edge, we have investigated the low-energy elementary excitations in a series of double-perovskite iridate single crystals, La 2 MIrO 6 (M=Co,Ni,and Zn). Almost dispersionless magnetic excitations at ~42(6) meV and ~35(5) meV have been observed in crystals containing magnetic 3d ions, La 2 CoIrO 6 and La 2 NiIrO 6 , respectively. In contrast, this low-energy magnetic excitation is absent in La 2 ZnIrO 6 in which the 3d ions are nonmagnetic, suggesting the importance of 3d–5d hybridization in the magnetic properties of these double-perovskite iridates. Furthermore, the magnetic excitation is suppressed completely above the magnetic ordering temperature, suggesting the inadequacy of using a simple spin Hamiltonian to describe magnetism of these materials.

High-pressure inelastic neutron scattering study of the anisotropic S = 1 spin chain [ Ni ( HF 2 ) ( 3 - Clpyradine ) 4 ] B F 4

[Ni(HF 2 )(3-Clpyradine) 4 ]BF 4 (NBCT) is a one-dimensional, S=1 spin-chain material that shows no long-range magnetic order down to thermometer temperatures of 0.1 K. Previous ambient pressure inelastic neutron scattering experiments identified NBCT to be in the large-D quantum paramagnetic phase of the D/J phase diagram, where D is the axial single-ion anisotropy and J is the intrachain superexchange. In this work, we extend the previous experiments to a hydrostatic pressure of 0.9 GPa. By comparing to density matrix renormalization group calculations, we find D/J increases from 1.5 to 3.2 as pressure increases from 0 GPa to 0.9 GPa, which pushes the system further into the large-D phase.

Weak itinerant magnetic phases of La 2 Ni 7

La 2 Ni 7 is an intermetallic compound that is thought to have itinerant magnetism with small moment (~0.15 µ B /Ni) ordering below 65 K. A recent study of single crystal samples by Ribeiro et. al. [Phys. Rev. B 105, 014412 (2022)] determined detailed anisotropic H-T phase diagrams and revealed three zero-field magnetic phase transitions at T 1 ~61.0 K, T 2 ~56.5 K, and T 3 ~42 K. In that study only the highest temperature phase is shown to have a clear ferromagnetic component. Here we present a single crystal neutron diffraction study determining the propagation vector and magnetic moment direction of the three magnetically ordered phases, two incommensurate and one commensurate, as a function of temperature. The higher temperature phases have similar, incommensurate propagation vectors, but with different ordered moment directions. At lower temperatures the magnetic order becomes commensurate with magnetic moments along the c direction as part of a first-order magnetic phase transition. In this study, we find that the low-temperature commensurate magnetic order is consistent with a proposal from earlier DFT calculations.

Hourglass-type bulk Ni 3 d band and Ce 4 f Kondo resonance states in the potential topological Kondo semimetal CeNiSn via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

The electronic structure of CeNiSn, which is a potential topological Kondo insulator and a Dirac nodal-loop semimetal, has been investigated by employing temperature (T) dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). The Fermi surfaces (FSs) and the band structures of CeNiSn for three orthogonal crystallographic planes are measured, in which both the very dispersive bands and the flat bands are observed, having mainly the Ni 3d character and the Ce 4f character, respectively. The measured FSs and ARPES bands agree reasonably well with the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The Fermi-edge (E F ) photon energy (hν) map along k b (=k (010) ) shows that the metallic E F -crossing states on the (010) surface have the three-dimensional character, suggesting that the observed E F -crossing metallic states do not correspond to the topological surface states of the two-dimensional character. On the other hand, albeit weak, the features of the hourglass-type bulk band crossings are observed along SXS, with the energies and the slopes being similar to those predicted by the DFT calculations, supporting the Dirac semimetallic nature of CeNiSn. In T-dependent ARPES, the Ce 4f Kondo resonance states are clearly revealed at low T, which become much suppressed above ~80 K. This feature is consistent with the Kondo temperature of CeNiSn, estimated from its ρ(T) data. This work demonstrates the importance of the coherent Kondo states in determining the topological properties of CeNiSn.

NMR study of Ni 50+x ⁢Ti 50-x strain glasses

Here, we studied Ni 50+x ⁢Ti 50-x with compositions up to x = 2, performing 47 Ti and 49 Ti nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements from 4 to 400 K. For large x in this system, a strain glass appears in which frozen ferroelastic nanodomains replace the displacive martensite structural transition. Here, we demonstrate that NMR can provide an extremely effective probe of the strain-glass freezing process, with large changes in NMR line shape due to the effects of random strains which become motionally narrowed at high temperatures. At the same time with high-resolution x-ray diffraction we confirm the lack of structural changes in x ≥ 1.2 samples, while we show that there is little change in the electronic behavior across the strain-glass freezing temperature. NMR spin-lattice relaxation time (T 1 ) measurements provide a further measure of the dynamics of the freezing process, and indicate a predominantly thermally activated behavior both above and below the strain-glass freezing temperature. We show that the strain-glass results are consistent with a very small density of critically divergent domains undergoing a Vogel-Fulcher-type freezing process, coexisting with domains exhibiting faster dynamics and stronger pinning.

Spatially anisotropic 𝑆=1 square-lattice antiferromagnet with single-ion anisotropy realized in a Ni(II) pyrazine-𝑛,𝑛′-dioxide coordination polymer

The Ni(NCS) 2 (pyzdo) 2 coordination polymer is found to be an S = 1 spatially anisotropic square lattice with easy-axis single-ion anisotropy. This conclusion is based upon considering in concert the experimental probes x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, magnetic-field-dependent heat capacity, muon-spin relaxation, neutron diffraction, neutron spectroscopy, and pulsed-field magnetization. Long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) order develops at T N = 18.5 K. Although the samples are polycrystalline, there is an observable spin-flop transition and saturation of the magnetization at ≈80 T. Linear spin-wave theory yields spatially anisotropic exchanges within an AFM square lattice, J x =0.235 meV, J y =2.014 meV, and an easy-axis single-ion anisotropy D=−1.622 meV (after renormalization). The anisotropy of the exchanges is supported by density functional theory.

Effects of Co substitution on the structural and magnetic properties of Sr ( Ni 1 - x Co x ) 2 P 2

Although SrNi 2 P 2 adopts the common ThCr 2 Si 2 structure for T ≥ 325 K, being in an uncollapsed tetragonal state rather than a collapsed tetragonal version, it is a special case for the ThCr 2 Si 2 class: on cooling below 325 K it adopts a one-third collapsed orthorhombic phase where one out of every three P rows bonds across the Sr layers. On the other hand, SrCo 2 P 2 only exhibits the uncollapsed ThCr 2 Si 2 structure from room temperature down to 1.8 K. Regardless of their low-temperature structures, neither SrNi 2 P 2 nor SrCo 2 P 2 manifests magnetic transitions down to 50 mK and 2 K, respectively. In this work we report the effects of Co substitution in Sr(Ni 1 - x Co x ) 2 P 2 , which allows for tuning the transition between the one-third collapsed and the uncollapsed structure. We find a rapid decrease of the one-third collapsed structural transition temperature with increasing Co fraction, until reaching full suppression for x ≥ 0.1. Substitution levels in the range 0.11 ≤ x ≤ 0.58 show no signs of any transition down to 1.8 K in the magnetization or resistance measurements in the range 1.8 ≤ T ≤ 300 K. However, different magnetically ordered states emerge for x ≥ 0.65, and disappear for x ≥ 0.99, recovering the known paramagnetic properties of the parent compound SrCo 2 P 2 . Further, these results are summarized in a phase diagram, built upon the characterization by energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction, temperature-dependent resistance, and field- and temperature-dependent magnetization measurements done on single crystals with different Co fraction. Both the magnetic and structural properties are compared to other systems with ThCr 2 Si 2 structure that exhibit magnetic ordering and collapsed tetragonal transitions. The magnetic ordering and moment formation are well described by Takahashi's spin fluctuation theory of itinerant electron magnetism.

Evidence of ordering in Cu-Ni alloys from experimental electronic entropy measurements

Phase diagrams exhibiting extended solid-solution and lenslike melting are often reproduced using ideal solutions, where ideal mixing considers a fully random configurational entropy of mixing. In the field of irreversible thermodynamics, experimental measurements of the composition variation of high-temperature electronic transport and molten-state properties suggest, however, a strong role for short-range atomic ordering in these systems. Herein, measurements of the thermopower and resistivity are reported for Cu-Ni solid solutions as a function of temperature and composition. The electronic transport properties were interpreted with an irreversible thermodynamic framework, revealing a large electronic contribution to the entropy of mixing. By considering a cluster model for the configurational entropy that uses the electronic contribution to inform the existence of ordered associates, we rationalize such a contribution of the electronic entropy with the ideal entropy of mixing commonly used to model such systems. In conclusion, these results suggest that the short-range order of the atoms plays a significant role in both solid and liquid states, even when there are no dominant intermetallic compounds in these alloys.

Europium c -axis ferromagnetism in Eu ( Co 1 - x Ni x ) 2 - y As 2 : A single-crystal neutron diffraction study

Here we report neutron diffraction results for the body-centered-tetragonal series Eu⁢(Co 1-x ⁢Ni x ) 2-y As 2 , x=0.10, 0.20, 0.42, and 0.82, y≤0.10, that detail changes to the magnetic ordering with nominal hole doping. We report the antiferromagnetic (AFM) propagation vectors, magnetic transition temperatures, and the ordered magnetic moments. We find a nonmonotonic change of the AFM propagation vector with x, with a minimum occurring at the tetragonal to collapsed-tetragonal phase crossover. For x=0.10 and 0.82 we find c-axis helix ordering of the Eu magnetic moments (spins) similar to x=0 and 1, with the spins oriented within the ab-plane. For x=0.20 and 0.42 we find higher-temperature c-axis ferromagnetic (FM) order and lower-temperature c-axis cone order. Using the extinction conditions for the space group, we discovered that the Eu spins are ordered in the higher-temperature c-axis FM phase for intermediate values of x, contrary to a previous report suggesting only Co/Ni spin ordering. Although we cannot directly confirm that the Co/Ni spins are also ordered, we suggest that c-axis itinerant-FM ordering of the Co/Ni spins could provide a molecular field that drives FM ordering of the Eu spins, which in turn provides the anisotropy for the lower-temperature c-axis cone order.

Pressure induced Invar effect in Fe 55 ⁢Ni 45 : An experimental study with nuclear resonant scattering

Pressure-dependent synchrotron x-ray diffraction (XRD), nuclear resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (NRIXS), and nuclear forward scattering (NFS) measurements were made on 57 Fe 55 Ni 45 . XRD measurements were at 298 and 392 K at pressures up to 20 GPa, confirming a pressure-induced Invar effect between 7 and 13 GPa. A decrease of the 57 Fe magnetic moment was found in NFS measurements under pressure, showing an increase in magnetic entropy. The 57 Fe phonon density of states (DOS) was obtained from NRIXS measurements. The low thermal expansion in the high-pressure Invar region originates from a competition between the thermal expansion from spins and phonons as calculated from Maxwell relations. Finally, the longitudinal phonon modes changed their pressure dependence near the Curie transition, which is evidence for a spin-phonon interaction.

Static and dynamic topological defects in the domain textures in the helical antiferromagnet Ni 2 ⁢CoTeO 6

Real-space Bragg coherent x-ray-diffractive imaging unveils the formation of bubble and stripe antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase domains on the surface of Ni 2 ⁢CoTeO 6 single crystal. The stripe domains exhibit dislocation-type topological defects. The defects typically form as defect-antidefect pairs and can be created or annihilated by temperature changes and local heating. Thermal fluctuations of the AFM domain walls are observed near the Néel temperature. Topological defect pairs dynamically form and disappear in the fluctuating state. These observations provide a real-space perspective on the dynamics of the AFM phase transition in a helical antiferromagnet. Finally, the remarkable tunability of AFM domain walls in a helical antiferromagnet underscores their potential for AFM spintronics applications.
