The evolution of the inner regions of viscous accretion disks surrounding neutron stars

The structure and evolution of the inner regions of an accretion disk around a neutron star have been investigated with respect to variations in the mass flow rate. In order to examine the sensitivity of the general response of the disk to the form of viscous dissipation, several theoretical constraints on disk evolution are proposed on the basis of current accretion disk theory. It is shown through a series of calculations that under certain circumstances nonlocal radial energy transfer can stabilize regions of the disk which appear to be unstable by local analysis. When viscous stress was scaled with the total pressure of the disk, global analysis was found to be consistent with local analysis, and instability was manifested in luminosity fluctuations and in bursts of less than 10 s. Analysis of the bursts in their limit cycles showed that the disk remained optically thick and geometrically thin throughout its evolution. Substantial agreement was found between the theoretical results and the available observational data.

Vortex creep and the internal temperature of neutron stars The Crab pulsar and PSR 0525 + 21

The behavior of the Crab pulsar following the 1969 and 1975 glitches and the postglich behavior of the old pulsar PSR 0525 + 21 are explained as resulting from internal torques due to the thermal creep of vortex lines in pinned superfluid regions. An overview of vortex creep theory is first given, and the immediate postglitch behavior of the Crab pulsar is calculated and compared with observation. The persistent shift in the spin-down rate observed for the Crab pulsar following the 1975 glitch is considered, and the internal and surface temperatures of this pulsar are deduced. The postglich behavior expected for very old pulsars is examined, showing that PSR 0525 + 21 falls into this category. It is concluded that the behavior of the Crab pulsar following both glitches can be characterized by the same two pinning regions. A comparison of the internal temperature for the Crab and Vela pulsars provides a significant constraint on the cooling of neutron stars.

Gravitational radiation from a solid crust neutron star

A rapidly rotating neutron star with a solid crust will have a rotationally induced oblateness that is constrained by the rigidity of the solid. It is shown that the effective triaxiality and the gravitational radiation output are small, in agreement with the very small change in period of PSR 1937 + 21.

Disruption of light He companions in accreting neutron star binaries

An old neutron star, being spun up to become a radio pulsar by accretion from a very low-mass He secondary, will ultimately tidally disrupt the secondary before the latter's mass reaches 0.004 solar mass. Even if angular momentum loss from the binary is carried away only by gravitational radiation, the formation of an isolated rapidly spinning pulsar in this way will take less than 10 to the 10th yr.

Hydrogen-like atoms on the surface of neutron stars - Intense magnetic field effects

It is known that very strong (greater than 1-TG) magnetic fields exist on the surface of some neutron stars. The properties of atoms in fields of this nature are considerably different from those of atoms in field-free regions. Because of the mixing of spherical and cylindrical symmetries, the analytical solution to the problem of a hydrogen atom in a uniform magnetic field is impossible to obtain. In this work, a variational wave function is used to describe the properties of hydrogen like atoms in intense magnetic fields including first-order relativistic effects. Special attention is given to the transition matrix elements for the 2p(0) - 1s(0) transition in Fe XXVI.

Electrosphere of an aligned magnetized neutron star

A fundamentally new self-consistent solution for the electrosphere of an aligned magnetized neutron star is presented. Unlike previous models the electrospheres are finite in extent. This avoids the light cylinder problem. The results may provide a basis for pulsar models.

Accretion onto neutron stars with the presence of a double layer

It is known from laboratory experiments that double layers can form in plasmas, usually in the presence of an electric current. It is argued that a double layer may be present in the accretion column of a neutron star in a binary system. It is suggested that the double layer may be the predominant deceleration mechanism for the accreting ions, especially for sources with X-ray luminosities of less than about 10 to the 37th erg/s. Previous models have involved either a collisionless shock or an assumed gradual deceleration of the accreting ions to thermalize the energy of the infalling matter.

Neutron star coupling to its environment

A discussion is undertaken of the outward flow generated by rotation-powered neutron stars, giving attention to the identification of particle, wave, and time-steady EMF components of the flow, the estimation of their densities, and the assessment of their contributions to the global energetics. It is concluded that a firm qualitative understanding of pulsar behavior has been achieved in the matters of magnetospheric structure, pair-production, the fate of large-amplitude waves, and the asymptotic behavior of the wind.

Neutron stars in twelve supernova remnants

X-ray observations of selected SNR are summarized. Five contain internal spinning neutron stars - four isolated and one in a binary system. Another seven contain central unresolved sources or bright nebulas. Observations of these nebulas, probably due to synchrotron emission, are used to estimate characteristics of the unseen pulsars.

Observational techniques for solar flare gamma-rays, hard X-rays, and neutrons

The development of new instrumentation and techniques for solar hard X-ray, gamma ray and neutron observations from spacecraft and/or balloon-borne platforms is examined. The principal accomplishments are: (1) the development of a two segment germanium detector which is near ideal for solar hard X-ray and gamma ray spectroscopy; (2) the development of long duration balloon flight techniques and associated instrumentation; and (3) the development of innovative new position sensitive detectors for hard X-ray and gamma rays.

Neutron starquakes and the nature of gamma-ray bursts

The possibility that gamma-ray bursts originate from quakes deep in the solid crust of a neutron star is investigated. Seismic waves are radiated if shear stress is relieved by brittle fracture. However they cannot propagate directly to the surface but are temporarily trapped below a reflecting layer. The shaking of the stellar surface couples the seismic waves to Alfven waves which propagate out into the magnetosphere. The crust-magnetosphere transmission coefficient strongly increases with wave frequency and magnetic field strength. Alfven wave luminosities sufficient to power galactic gamma-ray bursts are possible if magnetic fields greater than 100 billion G cover at least part of the stellar surface. As the Alfven waves propagate out into the low density magnetosphere, they become increasingly charge starved, thereby accelerating particles to relativistic energies.

Cyclotron line resonant transfer through neutron star atmospheres

Monte Carlo methods are used to study in detail the resonant radiative transfer of cyclotron line photons with recoil through a purely scattering neutron star atmosphere for both the polarized and unpolarized cases. For each case, the number of scatters, the path length traveled, the escape frequency shift, the escape direction cosine, the emergent frequency spectra, and the angular distribution of escaping photons are investigated. In the polarized case, transfer is calculated using both the cold plasma e- and o-modes and the magnetic vacuum perpendicular and parallel modes.

Infrared absorption study of neutron-transmutation-doped germanium

Using high-resolution far-infrared Fourier transform absorption spectroscopy and Hall effect measurements, the evolution of the shallow acceptor and donor impurity levels in germanium during and after the neutron transmutation doping process was studied. The results show unambiguously that the gallium acceptor level concentration equals the concentration of transmutated Ge-70 atoms during the whole process indicating that neither recoil during transmutation nor gallium-defect complex formation play significant roles. The arsenic donor levels appear at full concentration only after annealing for 1 h at 450 C. It is shown that this is due to donor-radiation-defect complex formation. Again, recoil does not play a significant role.

Cyclotron line features from neutron star atmospheres

Cyclotron line features from the polar cap plasmas of accreting magnetized neutron stars are modeled. The polar cap environment is modeled by a homogeneous isothermal plane-parallel slab threaded by a uniform superstrong magnetic field oriented orthogonal to the slab. Two physical cyclotron photon source functions are used. For conventional stopping depths, the emergent line spectra are fairly independent of the source functions. For hot atmospheres the details of the line transfer using relativistic kinematics differ substantially from those using nonrelativistic kinematics. Aside from finite recoil, both a finite natural linewidth and conventional stopping depths suppress the escape of photons blueward of line center and potential line features tend to be smeared out into the low-energy continuum. The formation of a line features is most favorable in low-field high-temperature atmospheres where cyclotron photon production is confined to a layer of small column density.

Gamma-ray, neutron, and hard X-ray studies and requirements for a high-energy solar physics facility

The requirements for future high-resolution spatial, spectral, and temporal observation of hard X-rays, gamma rays and neutrons from solar flares are discussed in the context of current high-energy flare observations. There is much promise from these observations for achieving a deep understanding of processes of energy release, particle acceleration and particle transport in a complicated environment such as the turbulent and highly magnetized atmosphere of the active sun.

Surface structure of neutron stars with high magnetic fields

The equation of state of cold dense matter in strong magnetic fields is calculated in the Thomas-Fermi and Thomas-Fermi-Dirac approximations. For use in the latter calculation, a new expression is derived for the exchange energy of the uniform electron gas in a strong magnetic field. Detailed calculations of the density profile in the surface region of a neutron star are described for a variety of equations of state, and these show that the surface density profile is strongly affected by the magnetic field, irrespective of whether or not matter in a magnetic field has a condensed state bound with respect to isolated atoms. It is also shown that, as a consequence of the field dependence of the screening potential, magnetic fields can significantly increase nuclear reaction rates.

Physics of systems containing neutron stars

The following is a summary of work done during the period of Mar. to Oct. 1989. Three major topics were extensively looked into during this time: the reported 2,000 Hz optical signal from the direction of SNR1987A, the possibility that neutron stellar surface magnetic fields do not decay except when the star is accreting, and the 6 Hz QPOs of LMXBs.
