Details of the NOvA 3-flavor oscillation analysis

NOvA is a world-leading long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. Its fine granularity allows the detection and identification of particle interactions in the detectors, notably muon and electron neutrino interactions. NOvA can measure the electron neutrino and antineutrino appearance rates, as well as the muon neutrino and antineutrino disappearance rates, in order to constrain the neutrino oscillations parameters, the neutrino mass hierarchy and the CP-violating phase $\delta_{CP}$.NOvA's latest results combine both neutrino data (8.85$\times{}10^{20}$ POT) and antineutrino data (12.33$\times{}10^{20}$ POT). A 4.4$\sigma$ evidence for $\overline{\nu}_{e}$ appearance in a $\overline{\nu}_{\mu}$ beam was measured. In addition, NOvA favors the Normal Hierachy (1.9$\sigma$) and prefers the Upper Octant for $\theta_{23}$ (1.6$\sigma$).}

Charged-Current Electron Neutrino Measurement with the MicroBooNE Detector

MicroBooNE is the first phase of Fermilab’s Short Baseline Neutrino (SBN) Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC) programme. This proceeding outlays the first characterisation of electron neutrinos in a muon neutrino beam with the LArTPC detector technology. The Booster Neutrino Beam has an energy peaking around 1GeV and an electron content of approximately 0.5%. The analysis investigates electrons produced in charged-current electron neutrino interactions. The kinematics of the electrons are measured along with comparisons to simulation. Most of the systematic uncertainties are constrained using a data-driven sample of charged-current muon neutrino events. The measurement of electron neutrinos originating from the Booster Neutrino Beam is a crucial component to understand the nature of the observed excess of low energy electromagnetic-like events at MiniBooNE.

Systematic Uncertainties of the NOvA Neutrino Oscillation Analysis

NOvA is a two detector long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment using Fermilab’s 700 kW NuMI muon neutrino beam. It studies the disappearance of muon (anti)neutrinos and the appearance of electron (anti)neutrinos in the beam over a distance of 810 km between the detectors. The observations can be used to constrain neutrino oscillation parameters: $\theta_{23}, \Delta m_{32}^2$ and $\delta_{CP}$ in the standard 3 active neutrinos paradigm. Although statistical uncertainties currently dominate in these measurements, understanding the major sources of systematic uncertainties and their correlations is vital for both the interpretation and precision of the results and also for further improvements of the analysis. This note presents details of the systematic uncertainties affecting NOvA's neutrino oscillation analysis results and how we evaluate them by generating systematically shifted predictions.

QuarkNet High School Cosmic Ray Projects

QuarkNet High School teachers and students perform experiments with cosmic ray muons. Their data is available to all on the i2u2.org site; enable measurements of muon flux, speed, and lifetime. The pandemic restricted access to many detectors, so QuarkNet provided virtual resources allowing users to carry out simpler experiments with already uploaded data. Some QuarkNet high school groups have also carried out more complex projects, e.g. Solar Eclipse 2017, MUSE at Fermilab, storm tracking, and g-2, that required assembling entire physics collaborations.

NuMI Beam Monitoring Simulation and Data Analysis Status and Progress

With the Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search (MINOS) experiment decommissioned, muon and hadron monitors became an important diagnostic tool for the NuMI O↵- axis vμ Appearance (NOvA) experiment at Fermilab to monitor the Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) beam. The goal of this study is to maintain the quality of the monitor signals and to establish correlations with the neutrino beam profile. And we carry out a systematic study of the response of the muon monitors to the changes in the parameters of the proton beam and lattice parameters. We report here on the progress of the beam data analysis and comparison with the simulation results.

The Mu2e crystal calorimeter

The Mu2e experiment at Fermilab will search for the charged-lepton flavour violating conversion of negative muons into electrons in the coulomb field of an Al nucleus, planning to reach a single event sensitivity of about $3\cdot10^{−17}$, four orders of magnitude beyond the current best limit. The conversion electron has a clear monoenergetic signature at 104.967 MeV, slightly below the muon rest mass, and will be identified by a complementary measurement carried out by a high-resolution tracker and an electromagnetic calorimeter (EMC). The calorimeter is composed of 1348 pure CsI crystals, each read by two custom UV-extended SiPMs, that are arranged in two annular disks. The EMC should achieve better than 10% energy resolution and 500 ps timing resolution for 100 MeV electrons and maintain extremely high levels of reliability and stability and in a harsh operating environment with high vacuum, 1 T B-field and radiation exposures up to 100 krad and $10^{12} \rm{n}_\rm{1MeVeq}/\rm{cm}^{2}$.The calorimeter technological choice, along with the design of the custom front-end electronics, cooling and mechanical systems were validated through an electron beam test on a large-scale 51-crystals prototype (Module-0) and extensive test campaigns that characterised and verified the performance of crystals, photodetectors, analogue and digital electronics. This included hardware stress tests and irradiation campaigns with neutrons, protons, and photons. The production and QC phases of all calorimeter components is completed apart for the digital electronics that has been revised for improving its resilience to SEU and SEL. A series of vertical slice tests with the final electronics is being carried out on the Module-0 at LNF along with the implementation and validation of the calibration procedures. The first disk has been assembled in 2022 while the second disk is under assembly at the moment of writing. Status of construction will be summarised, along with plans for commissioning and first calibration of the fully assembled disks.

Status and perspectives of cLFV at Mu2e

Flavor physics offers a promising way to explore fundamental aspects of the standard model, such asthe mass hierarchy and electroweak symmetry breaking. Within this field, Charged Lepton FlavorViolation (CLFV) stands out as a phenomenon that is strongly suppressed in the Standard Model, making it an excellent probe for potential new physics. Ongoing CLFV experiments, includingMu2e, COMET, MEG, and Mu3e, are preparing for data collection in the coming decade. Amongthe possible searches in the muon sector (𝜇 → 𝑒𝛾, mu3e and muon conversion), two muonconversion experiments will start taking data in few years: Mu2e at Fermilab and COMET atJPArk. Both of them aim to improve the current sensitivity by several orders of magnitude. Thisviolation of charged lepton flavor presents an opportunity to explore novel physics on a scale notcurrently accessible through direct searches at contemporary or planned high-energy colliders.

Beam Commissioning Result of Polarized Target at SpinQuest

SpinQuest is a fixed-target experiment at Fermilab to measure the Drell-Yan process using transversely polarized NH$_3$ and ND$_3$ targets and unpolarized 120-GeV proton beam. In the Drell-Yan process, a quark in one scattering hadron and an anti-quark in the other hadron annihilate into a virtual photon and then decay into a muon (lepton) pair. The angular distribution of final-state muon pairs with respect to the target polarization is sensitive to the Sivers function of light antiquarks in the nucleon, which is one of the eight Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions. The intensity of the proton beam is as high as $10^{12}$ protons/second, in order to accumulate the required statistics of Drell-Yan events. The polarized target system at SpinQuest has been carefully designed to accommodate such a high beam intensity. It is equipped with an evaporation refrigerator with a cooling power of around 5 W at 1 K. The target temperature is maintained at 1 K even under heat load caused by the proton beam and the DNP microwave. The target system and the spectrometer were commissioned with the proton beam from May through July 2024. The experimental setup of SpinQuest and the performance of the target system during the beam commissioning is reported.

Understanding the temperature and humidity dependence of the SiPM characteristics

A miniature version of the ICAL experiment at the India-based Neutrino Observatory, the mini-ICALis in operation at the IICHEP, Madurai. The commissioning work of a Cosmic Muon Veto detector (CMVD)on top of the mini-ICAL is continued using extruded plastic scintillators with embeddedWLS fibers and the SiPM as a photo-transducer. The CMVD is being built to study thefeasibility of a cosmic muon veto for a shallow-depth neutrino experiment. The SiPM is calibratedusing an ultrafast LED driver andthe same calibration techniques will be used during the data taking period with a simplified LED in thesame readout PCB. An experimental setup wasdesigned to characterise the SiPMs in a temperature controlled environment. The readout electronicsinvolves trans-impedance amplifiers and a voltage followers of combined gain 1.24 mV/$\mu$A and adigital storage oscilloscope for the data collection with a minimal distortion of SiPM signal.Various characteristics of the Hamamatsu SiPM (S13360-2050VE), e.g. signal shape, optically correlatedand uncorrelated noise, recovery time etc were studied as a function of $V_{ov}$, number of photoelectrons, the ambient temperature and the humidity. This paper will cover the details of those results.

Bent Crystal Channeling for Optimized Beam Shadowing and Proton Extraction at Mu2e

The Mu2e experiment is designed to investigate the CLFV through the observation of a neutrinoless muon-to-electron conversion in the field of an Al nucleus. The observation of such a process would be clear evidence of physics beyond the standard model. Due to the rarity of this process, a cutting-edge, intense muon beam is required to achieve an improvement of the current single-event sensitivity by 4 orders of magnitude. To achieve this goal, a primary proton beam with 8 GeV is extracted from the Fermilab Delivery Ring using the slow resonant extraction technique. Mu2e requires ~3.6x10$^{20}$ protons-on-target to meet its goal; hence, it is crucial to minimize the extraction losses. An important source of such losses are the particles impacting on the electrostatic septum blade. A very promising solution to the problem lies in the beam shadowing scheme tested at CERN SPS. In this approach, a bent crystal is strategically placed upstream of the septum, deflecting particles from the blade at a precise angle via the phenomenon of channeling. As a result, a zone with reduced particle flux is created downstream of the crystal, safeguarding the septum anode by minimizing interactions with the beam. This work explores the optimization of beam shadowing design and the process in the manufacturing and characterization of the bent crystal sample. It emphasizes the promising role of channeling in bent crystals, and it underscores the significant potential of channeling in bent crystals to assist the Mu2e experiment.

Search for Astrophysical Neutrinos from 1FLE Blazars with IceCube

The majority of astrophysical neutrinos have undetermined origins. The IceCube Neutrino Observatory has observed astrophysical neutrinos but has not yet identified their sources. Blazars are promising source candidates, but previous searches for neutrino emission from populations of blazars detected in ≳GeV gamma rays have not observed any significant neutrino excess. Recent findings in multimessenger astronomy indicate that high-energy photons, coproduced with high-energy neutrinos, are likely to be absorbed and reemitted at lower energies. Thus, lower-energy photons may be better indicators of TeV–PeV neutrino production. This paper presents the first time-integrated stacking search for astrophysical neutrino emission from MeV-detected blazars in the first Fermi Large Area Telescope low energy (1FLE) catalog using ten years of IceCube muon–neutrino data. The results of this analysis are found to be consistent with a background-only hypothesis. Assuming an E -2 neutrino spectrum and proportionality between the blazars MeV gamma-ray fluxes and TeV–PeV neutrino flux, the upper limit on the 1FLE blazar energy-scaled neutrino flux is determined to be 1.64 x 10 -12 TeV cm -2 s -1 at 90% confidence level. This upper limit is approximately 1% of IceCube’s diffuse muon–neutrino flux measurement.

The NOvA Test Beam Program

NOvA is a long-baseline off-axis beam neutrino experiment at Fermilab and Ash River, Minnesota. By measuring νμ \nu_\mu disappearance and νe \nu_e appearance at the 14 kiloton NOvA Far Detector, the experiment is addressing outstanding questions in neutrino physics, including the neutrino mass hierarchy and existence of leptonic CP violation. The NOvA Test Beam program, under deployment at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility, will use a scaled-down NOvA detector to sample beams of tagged electrons, muons, pions, and protons in the momentum range of 0.3 to 2 GeV/c. It will further the NOvA physics reach by precisely measuring the detector's muon energy scale and electromagnetic and hadronic response, and provide real data for detailed studies of particle identification techniques. Ongoing efforts on beamline instrumentation, data acquisition, simulation, momentum reconstruction and particle identification are presented. Implications for the neutrino oscillation measurements are discussed.

Interstellar electron intensity

Two independent methods for measuring the electron intensity in interstellar space are proposed. The positron method involves the production of pions in proton-proton collisions, the decay of the pions into muons, and the subsequent decay of the muons into positrons. Results from detailed calculations of these processes are given in graphical form. The second method involves cosmic electron emitted synchrotron radiation in the interstellar magnetic field. These two methods are also used to analyze the spatial and temporal constancy of cosmic ray electrons in the galaxy.
