Unexpected Formation of Metallofulleroids from Multicomponent Reactions, with Crystallographic and Computational Studies of the Cluster Motion

Abstract New multicomponent reactions involving an isocyanide, terminal or internal alkynes, and endohedral metallofullerene (EMF) Lu 3 N@C 80 yield metallofulleroids which are characterized by mass‐spectrometry, HPLC, and multiple 1D and 2D NMR techniques. Single crystal studies revealed one ketenimine metallofulleroid has ordered Lu 3 N cluster which is unusual for EMF monoadducts. Computational analysis, based on crystallographic data, confirm that the endohedral cluster motion is controlled by the position of the exohedral organic appendants. Our findings provide a new functionalization reaction for EMFs, and a potential facile approach to freeze the endohedral cluster motion at relatively high temperatures.

Unexpected Formation of Metallofulleroids from Multicomponent Reactions, with Crystallographic and Computational Studies of the Cluster Motion

New multicomponent reactions involving an isocyanide, terminal or internal alkynes, and endohedral metallofullerene (EMF) Lu 3 N@C 80 yield metallofulleroids which are characterized by massspectrometry, HPLC, and multiple 1D and 2D NMR techniques. Nuclear Structure and Decay Data for A=167 Isobars

Experimental nuclear spectroscopic data are compiled and evaluated for 17 known nuclides of mass 167 (Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er Tm, Yb, Lu, Hf, Ta, W, Re, Os, Ir, Pt), 23 years after the previous full evaluation by 2000Ba65. Detailed information is presented for each reaction and decay experiment. Combining all the available data, recommended values are provided for energies, spins and parities, and half-lives of levels, with energies, branching ratios and multipolarities of γ radiations, and characteristics of β and α radiations in radioactive decays. Here, the α decays of A=171 nuclei to A=167 daughters are included in this work, while for α decays of A=167 nuclei to A=163 daughters, consult Nuclear Data Sheets (2010Re03) or the ENSDF database for A=163. 167 Er, 167 Tm, 167 Yb, 167 Lu and 167 Ta are among the most extensively studied nuclides via decay and high-spin gamma-ray spectroscopy measurements, followed by 167 Ho, 167 Hf, 167 W, and 167 Os. Information for excited states in 167 Dy, 167 Re, and 167 Ir are limited; no excited states have yet been identified in 167 Sm, 167 Eu, 167 Gd, 167 Tb and 167 Pt, with the ground-state half-life of 167 Sm remaining unknown. This work supersedes the earlier evaluation of A=167 nuclei by 2000Ba65.

Comparison of response of superconductivity to impurity concentration in UBe 13 and LuBe 13

Uhlirova et al. reported superconductivity in LuBe 13 and assigned it tentatively to be BCS-type, with specific heat measurements down to 0.45 K showing the partial onset of a bulk transition. In order to check LuBe13 for unconventional behavior, as well as to further characterize the unconventional superconductivity in UBe 13 , we have prepared and characterized down to 0.40 K three arc-melted samples each of MBe 13 , M = Lu, U, using three different purities (99.999%, 99.96%, and 99.8%) of Be but with the same high purity M (Lu or U) for all three. The measurements down to 0.40 K allow the detection of the maximum in the specific heat in all three LuBe 13 samples. The resulting superconducting properties strongly depend on impurity level in UBe 13 (40% decrease in ΔC/T c , 15% decrease in T c mid ) while the three LuBe 13 samples exhibit significantly smaller changes (10% and 5% respectively) with purity. The comparison of properties at the first two levels of purity (99.999% vs 99.96%) is even more disparate: 12% decrease in T c mid in UBe 13 vs no change in LuBe 13 . Furthermore, these results are consistent with previous results that argue for unconventional superconductivity in UBe 13 and are consistent with Uhlirova et al.‘s assignment of LuBe 13 as a conventional, BCS superconductor. More generally, this example of comparing superconducting properties vs-controlled gradations in impurity levels with two compositionally and structurally “matched” superconducting compounds (one conventional and one of to-be-determined coupling behavior) offers a new method for determining unconventional behavior.

Protein-based approach for high-purity Sc, Y, and grouped lanthanide separation

Rare earth elements (REEs: Sc, Y, La- Lu) are irreplaceable components in many clean energy and consumer technologies. However, the extraction and subsequent separation of individual REEs from ore-based feedstocks remains a significant economic and environmental challenge. Here in this work, we investigated the intra-REE separation potential of lanmodulin (LanM), a natural protein from Methylorubrum extorquens that has emerged as a sustainable potential alternative to conventional solvent extraction-based separation. By determining the intra-REE selectivity of immobilized LanM and systematically testing pH-based and small chelator-based (i.e., citrate and malonate) desorption processes, we established the framework and methodology for achieving select individual and grouped REE separations from a mixed REE feedstock. We show that Sc forms the tightest complex with LanM among REEs but can be readily and selectively desorbed using malonate to generate high-purity Sc (>99 % purity, >99 % yield) in a single adsorption/desorption cycle. We further show that the intrinsic REE selectivity of LanM is sufficient to achieve heavy REE (HREE) separation from light and middle REEs (L-MREEs), yielding an yttrium-enriched product. This separation effect is further magnified by pairing LanM’s unique M-LREE preference with a HREE-preferring chelator in the desorption process, which enriches HREE and MREE fractions relative to low value, abundant La/Ce. Finally, by combining pH- and citrate-based desorption processes in a two-cycle separation scheme, we demonstrate the generation of fractions highly enriched in Y, Gd-Lu, Pr-Eu, and La-Ce. Collectively, these data support the application of a LanM-based approach for achieving impactful REE separations from mixed REE feedstocks.

Syntheses and Characterization of Tetrazolate-Based Lanthanide Compounds and Selective Crystallization Separation of Neodymium and Dysprosium

Selective crystallization offers new opportunities for separating neodymium and dysprosium, which are considerably important in permanent magnets. Two water-soluble nitrogen-rich tetrazolate-based ligands, dtp 2– (H 2 dtp = 2,3-di-1H-tetrazol-5-ylpyrazine) and H 2 ibt – [H 3 ibt = 4,5-bis(tetrazol-5-yl)imidazole], allow the separation of Nd 3+ and Dy 3+ through selective crystallization. The reactions of Ln 3+ with the ligand Na 2 (dtp)·2H 2 O lead to two distinct phases, Na[Ln(dtp)(H 2 O) 8 ](dtp)·H 2 O (Lndtp1; Ln = La–Pr) and [Ln(H 2 O) 8 ](Hdtp)(dtp)·H 2 O (Lndtp2; Ln = Nd and Sm–Lu). Three different compound types, [Ln(H 2 ibt) 2 (H 2 O) 6 ](H 2 ibt)·3(H 2 O) (Lnibt1; Ln = La or Ce), [Ln(H 2 ibt)(H 2 O) 7 ](H 2 ibt) 2 ·4(H 2 O) (Lnibt2; Ln = Pr or Nd), and [Ln(Hibt)(H 2 ibt)(H 2 O) 4 ]·4+x(H 2 O) (Lnibt3; Ln = Sm–Lu), are obtained from reacting Ln 3+ and Na(H 2 ibt)·3(H 2 O). Two different phases are observed for Nd(Lnibt2) and Dy(Lnibt3) in the system of H 2 ibt – , which leads to crystallization-based separation of Nd/Dy with a separation factor of 32 ± 0.7, 10 times higher than that of dtp 2– , and a short separation time of 20 s (1 day for dtp 2– ). As a result, the higher performance of H 2 ibt – compared to that of dtp2– provides guidance for the rational design of water-soluble tetrazolate-derived ligands for selective crystallization.

Crystal Structures, Optical Behavior, and Magnetic Properties in Hydrated Lanthanide Iron Sulfates

Single crystals of LnFe(SO 4 ) 3 (H 2 O) 2 (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm; compounds 1–11) and LnFe(SO 4 ) 3 (H 2 O) (Ln = Tm, Yb, Lu; compounds 12–14) were synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) analysis revealed that the dihydrated compounds (1–11) crystallize in centrosymmetric (CS) structures, with the lanthanide ions adopting eight-coordinate geometries. In contrast, the monohydrated compounds (12–14) exhibit noncentrosymmetric (NCS) structures, where the lanthanide ions are seven-coordinated. Vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) confirmed that compounds 2, 4, and 7–11 are paramagnetic below 400 K, with compound 8 displaying the highest magnetic susceptibility. Compounds 1, 5, 6, 13, and 14 show a sharp increase in magnetic susceptibility at Néel temperatures ( T N ) of approximately 72, 76, 70, 58, and 56 K, respectively, indicating antiferromagnetic ordering. High-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements further support the presence of antiferromagnetic transitions in these compounds. Second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements showed that the noncentrosymmetric Yb (compound 13) and Lu (compound 14) compounds exhibit SHG intensities of 0.3× and 1.6× that of potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP), respectively.

Understanding the Adsorption of Rare-Earth Elements in Oligo-Grafted Mesoporous Carbon

Rare-earth elements (REEs) are 17 elements of the periodic table primarily consisting of lanthanides. In modern society, the usage of REEs is ubiquitous in almost all modern gadgets and therefore efficient recovery and separation of REEs are of high importance. Selective adsorption and chelation of REEs in solid sorbents is a unique and sustainable process for their recovery. In this work, single-stranded oligos with 100 units of thymine were grafted onto carboxylated mesoporous carbon to synthesize a sorbent with phosphorus and oxygen functionalities. Additionally, the sorbent was characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy-energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Three different REEs with varying atomic radii and densities, Lu, Dy, and La, were adsorbed onto the carbon from aqueous solutions. It was observed that the adsorbed amounts increased with the increase in the atomic radius or decrease in the atomic density. Calculation of the distribution coefficients for all the equilibrium adsorption amounts suggested that adsorption is more effective in the lower concentration region. The L 3 -edge X-ray absorption near-edge structure confirmed a 3+ oxidation state of REEs in the adsorbed phase. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) confirmed the binding of REEs with oxygen functionalities in the adsorbed phase. The radial distribution functions calculated from the EXAFS data suggest a longer RE–O distance for La compared to those for Lu and Dy. The coordination numbers and Debye–Waller factors have typical values of about 8–9 atoms and 0.01–0.02 Å 2 , respectively.

Spontaneous and Ion-Specific Formation of Inverted Bilayers at Air/Aqueous Interface

Developing better separation technologies for rare earth metals, an important aspect of a sustainable materials economy, is challenging due to their chemical similarities. Identifying molecular scale interactions that amplify the subtle differences between the rare earths can be useful in developing new separation technologies. Here, we describe ion-dependent monolayer to inverted bilayer transformation of extractant molecules at the air/aqueous interface. The inverted bilayers form with Lu 3+ ions but not with Nd 3+ . By introducing Lu 3+ ions to preformed monolayers, we extract kinetic parameters corresponding to the monolayer to inverted bilayer conversion. Further, temperature-dependent studies show Arrhenius behavior with an energy barrier of 40 kcal/mol. The kinetics of monolayer to inverted bilayer conversion is also affected by the character of the background anion, although anions are expected to be repelled from the interface. Our results show the outsized importance of ion-specific effects on interfacial structure and kinetics, pointing to their role in chemical separation methods.

Global land use for 2015–2100 at 0.05° resolution under diverse socioeconomic and climate scenarios

Abstract Global future land use (LU) is an important input for Earth system models for projecting Earth system dynamics and is critical for many modeling studies on future global change. Here we generated a new global gridded LU dataset using the Global Change Analysis Model (GCAM) and a land use spatial downscaling model, named Demeter, under the five Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) and four Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) scenarios. Compared to existing similar datasets, the presented dataset has a higher spatial resolution (0.05° × 0.05°) and spreads under a more comprehensive set of SSP-RCP scenarios (in total 15 scenarios), and considers uncertainties from the forcing climates. We compared our dataset with the Land Use Harmonization version 2 (LUH2) dataset and found our results are in general spatially consistent with LUH2. The presented dataset will be useful for global Earth system modeling studies, especially for the analysis of the impacts of land use and land cover change and socioeconomics, as well as the characterizing the uncertainties associated with these impacts.

Structural and physical properties of 99 complex bulk chalcogenides crystals using first-principles calculations

Chalcogenide semiconductors and glasses have many applications in the civil and military fields, especially in relation to their electronic, optical and mechanical properties for energy conversion and in enviormental materials. However, they are much less systemically studied and their fundamental physical properties for a large class chalcogenide semiconductors are rather scattered and incomplete. Here, we present a detailed study using well defined first-principles calculations on the electronic structure, interatomic bonding, optical, and mechanical properties for 99 bulk chalcogenides including thirteen of these crytals which have never been calculated. Due to their unique composition and structures, these 99 bulk chalcogenides are divided into two main groups. The first group contains 54 quaternary crystals with the structure composition (A2BCQ4) (A = Ag, Cu; B = Zn, Cd, Hg, Mg, Sr, Ba; C = Si, Ge, Sn; Q = S, Se, Te), while the second group contains scattered ternary and quaternary chalcogenide crystals with a more diverse composition (AxByCzQn) (A = Ag, Cu, Ba, Cs, Li, Tl, K, Lu, Sr; B = Zn, Cd, Hg, Al, Ga, In, P, As, La, Lu, Pb, Cu, Ag; C = Si, Ge, Sn, As, Sb, Bi, Zr, Hf, Ga, In; Q = S, Se, Te; x=1, 2, 3; y=0, 1, 2, 5; z=0, 1, 2 and n=3, 4, 5, 6, 9). Moreover, the total bond order density (TBOD) is used as a single quantum mechanical metric to characterize the internal cohesion of these crystals enabling us to correlate them with the calculated properties, especially their mechanical properties. This work provides a very large database for bulk chalcogenides crucial for the future theoretical and experimental studies, opening opportunities for study the properties and potential application of a wide variety of chalcogenides.

The solution structures and relative stability constants of lanthanide–EDTA complexes predicted from computation

Ligand selectivity to specific lanthanide (Ln) ions is key to the separation of rare earth elements from each other. Ligand selectivity can be quantified with relative stability constants (measured experimentally) or relative binding energies (calculated computationally). The relative stability constants of EDTA (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) with La 3+ , Eu 3+ , Gd 3+ , and Lu 3+ were predicted from relative binding energies, which were quantified using electronic structure calculations with relativistic effects and based on the molecular structures of Ln–EDTA complexes in solution from density functional theory molecular dynamics simulations. The protonation state of an EDTA amine group was varied to study pH ~7 and ~11 conditions. Further, simulations at 25 °C and 90 °C were performed to elucidate how structures of Ln–EDTA complexes varying with temperature are related to complex stabilities at different pH conditions. Relative stability trends are predicted from computation for varying Ln 3+ ions (La, Eu, Gd, Lu) with a single ligand (EDTA at pH ~11), as well as for a single Ln 3+ ion (La) with varying ligands (EDTA at pH ~7 and ~11). Changing the protonation state of an EDTA amine site significantly changes the solution structure of the Ln–EDTA complex resulting in a reduction of the complex stability. As a result, increased Ln–ligand complex stability is correlated to reduced structural variations in solution upon an increase in temperature.

Materials design, synthesis, and transport properties of disordered rare-earth Zintl bismuthides with the anti -Th 3 P 4 structure type

The synthesis, structural elucidation, and transport properties of the extended series Ca 4–x RE x Bi 3 (RE = Y, La–Nd, Sm, Gd–Tm, and Lu; x ≈ 1) and Ca 4–x RE x Bi 3–δ Sb δ (RE = La, Ho, Er, and Lu; x ≈ 1, δ ≈ 1.5) are presented. Structural elucidation is based on single-crystal X-ray diffraction data and confirms the chemical drive of Ca4Bi3 with the cubic anti-Th 3 P 4 structure type (space group I4 ¯3d, no. 220, Z = 4) into a Zintl phase by the introduction of trivalent rare-earth atoms. The structure features complex bonding, heavy elements, and electron count akin to that of valence-precise semiconductors, making it an ideal target for thermoelectrics development. Introducing crystallographic site disorders at the cation site for the Ca 4–x RE x Bi 3 phase and both the cation and anion sites for the Ca 4–x RE x Bi 3–δ Sb δ phase brings about additional desirable characteristics for thermoelectric materials in the context of tuning knobs for lowering thermal conductivity. Electronic structure calculations of idealized Ca 3 YBi 3 and Ca 3 LaBi 3 compounds indicate the opening of indirect bandgaps at the Fermi level with magnitudes Eg = 0.38 eV and 0.57 eV, respectively. The electrical resistivity ρ(T) of some of the investigated phases measured on single crystals evolve in a metallic manner with magnitudes of order 1.4 mΩ cm near 500 K, thus supporting the notion of a degenerate semiconducting state, with the temperature dependence of the Seebeck coefficient α(T) suggesting the p-type behavior. Furthermore, the low electrical resistivity and the realization of a degenerate semiconducting state in the title phases present a window of opportunity for optimizing their carrier concentrations for enhanced thermoelectric performance.

Photodissociation of aqueous I3− observed with liquid-phase ultrafast mega-electron-volt electron diffraction

Developing femtosecond resolution methods for directly observing structural dynamics is critical to understanding complex photochemical reaction mechanisms in solution. We have used two recent developments, ultrafast mega-electron-volt electron sources and vacuum compatible sub-micron thick liquid sheet jets, to enable liquid-phase ultrafast electron diffraction (LUED). We have demonstrated the viability of LUED by investigating the photodissociation of tri-iodide initiated with a 400 nm laser pulse. This has enabled the average speed of the bond expansion to be measured during the first 750 fs of dissociation and the geminate recombination to be directly captured on the picosecond time scale.

DyFe 2 O 4 : A new trigonal rare-earth ferrite grown by molecular-beam epitaxy

Using epitaxial stabilization, we synthesized single-phase (001)-oriented thin films of DyFe 2 O 4+x on (111) MgAl 2 O 4 substrates by molecular-beam epitaxy. The metastable DyFe 2 O 4 polymorph formed is isostructural to known trigonal ferrimagnetic RFe 2 O 4 phases with space group $R\bar{3}m$, where R = Ho to Lu. The epitaxial DyFe 2 O 4 thin films have two in-plane orientation relationships: [100] DyFe 2 O 4 || [$2\bar{1}1$] MgAl 2 O 4 plus a twin variant related by a 60° in-plane rotation. DyFe 2 O 4 is not bulk stable and has never been synthesized before. Indeed, it has been predicted to be on the edge energetically of what may be possible to stabilize. The fact that the RFe 2 O 4 phase is stable for all elements leading up to dysprosium (Ho–Lu) leads us to believe that DyFe 2 O 4 could be a “remnant metastable phase,” one which, given the right thermodynamic conditions, could become the lowest free energy phase. We find that although we are able to get structurally very close to $R\bar{3}m$ DyFe 2 O 4 , the films are not stoichiometric as they have an increased c lattice parameter, indicative of extra oxygen as is sometimes seen in other RFe2O4 phases. The unintended surplus oxygen opens questions regarding what may be achievable using such tricks as epitaxial stabilization to access metastable phases and whether this indeed constitutes “remnant metastability.”

Imaging and dosimetric characteristics of 67 Cu

In recent years the use of beta-emitting radiopharmaceuticals for cancer therapy has expanded rapidly following development of therapeutics for neuroendocrine tumors, prostate cancer, and other oncologic malignancies. One emerging beta-emitting radioisotope of interest for therapy is 67 Cu (t 1/2 : 2.6 d) due to its chemical equivalency with the widely-established positron-emitting isotope 64 Cu (t 1/2 : 12.7 h). Here we evaluate both the imaging and dosimetric characteristics of 67 Cu, as well as producing the first report of SPECT/CT imaging using 67 Cu. To this end, 67 Cu was produced by photon-induced reactions on isotopically-enriched 68 Zn at the Low-Energy Accelerator Facility (LEAF) of Argonne National Laboratory, followed by bulk separation of metallic 68 Zn by sublimation and radiochemical purification by column chromatography. Gamma spectrometry was performed by efficiency-calibrated high-purity germanium (HPGe) analysis to verify absolute activity calibration and establish radionuclidic purity. Absolute activity measurements corroborated manufacturer-recommended dose-calibrator settings and no radionuclidic impurities were observed. Using the Clinical Trials Network anthropomorphic chest phantom, SPECT/CT images were acquired. Medium Energy (ME) SPECT collimation was found to provide the best image quality from the primary 185 keV gamma emission of 67 Cu. Reconstructed images of 67 Cu were similar in quality to images acquired using 177 Lu. Recovery coefficients were calculated and compared against quantitative images of 99m Tc, 177 Lu, and 64 Cu within the same anthropomorphic chest phantom. Production and clinical imaging of 67 Cu appears feasible, and future studies investigating the therapeutic efficacy of 67 Cu-based radiopharmaceuticals are warranted.
