Lessons Learned From the Flight of the NASA In-Step Cryo System Experiment

The Cryo System Experiment (CSE), a NASA In-Space Technology Experiments Program (IN- STEP) Flight Experiment, was developed by Hughes Aircraft Company under contract to the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) to validate in near zero-g space a 65 K cryogenic system for focal planes, optics, instruments, or other equipment (gamma-ray spectrometers, and infrared and submillimeter imaging instruments) that require continuous cryogenic cooling.

Propulsion lessons learned from the loss of Mars Observer

This paper presents an overview of the potential failure modes identified by the JPL review board and presents evidence, discovered after the failure reviews were complete, that the loss was very likely due to the use of an incompatible braze material in the flow restriction orifice of the pressure regulator.

Lessons Learned--MO&DA at JPL

The basic questions addressed in this paper are how to avoid future surprise growth in Mission Operations and Data Analysis (MO&DA) costs, and how to minimize total MO&DA costs for planetary missions. The context of this paper and its conclusions is in the arena of JPL mission operations support. The fundamental conclusion is that there is no simple, single solution: the entire Project life-cycle must be addressed.

Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter in-flight anomalies and lessons learned : an update

The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter mission has as its primary objectives: advance our understanding of the current Mars climate, the processes that have formed and modified the surface of the planet, and the extent to which water has played a role in surface processes; identify sites of possible aqueous activity indicating environments that may have been or are conducive to biological activity; and thus, identify and characterize sites for future landed missions; and provide forward and return relay services for current and future Mars landed assets.
