Data-based and secure switched cyber–physical systems

In this work, we develop a completely model-free moving target defense framework for the detection and mitigation of sensor and/or actuator attacks in cyber–physical systems with dynamics that evolve in discrete-time. We incorporate an intrusion detection mechanism based on an approximate dynamic programming technique that learns the policies for optimal regulation and optimal tracking while simultaneously defending against actuator and sensor attacks in a model-free fashion. Switching rules are leveraged to force proactive and reactive defense mechanisms as well as, guarantee the stability of the equilibrium point. Finally, as a case study, we apply the proposed moving target defense framework to a DC–DC converter that is used in electric vehicles.

Physical Layer Security at a Point-to-Point MIMO System With 1-Bit DACs and ADCs

Low-resolution converters reduce the power consumption of wireless devices and help enable large energy-efficient arrays. In this letter, we evaluate the secrecy rate for the extreme case of 1-bit single-user multiple-input multiple-output systems following two signaling approaches. In the first method, the system uses discrete signaling. In the second, the system combines Gaussian signaling with artificial noise alongside power allocation. In the first case, we give a closed-form expression of the secrecy rate and propose an algorithm that provides near-optimal results for low signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs). Further, in the second scenario, depending on the channel state information, we suggest different precoding plans and derive a secrecy rate lower bound. At low SNR, power is allocated to the main signal. Only at high SNR is optimal power allocation effective. Moreover, knowing the eavesdropper channel greatly improves the system’s secrecy.

Towards Improving Container Security by Preventing Runtime Escapes

Container escapes enable the adversary to execute code on the host from inside an isolated container. Notably, these high severity escape vulnerabilities originate from three sources: (1) container profile misconfigurations, (2) Linux kernel bugs, and (3) container runtime vulnerabilities. While the first two cases have been studied in the literature, no works have investigated the impact of container runtime vulnerabilities. In this paper, to fill this gap, we study 59 CVEs for 11 different container runtimes. As a result of our study, we found that five of the 11 runtimes had nine publicly available PoC container escape exploits covering 13 CVEs. Our further analysis revealed all nine exploits are the result of a host component leaked into the container. Here, we apply a user namespace container defense to prevent the adversary from leveraging leaked host components and demonstrate that the defense stops seven of the nine container escape exploits.

Ameliorating Global Challenges: Globalization, Geopolitics, Basic & Applied Research, and Research Security

We are confronted with a myriad of global challenges, from extreme weather events, occurring at higher frequencies than at any point in history, to pollution, food insecurity, clean water shortages, and fundamentally limited natural resources and materials. The largest number of people inhabit our planet today and enjoy the highest standard of living - though not equally distributed across the world - compared to any prior moment in history. To sustain this quality of life, we are largely reliant on fossil fuel sources, which are responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions by weight each day than the collective weight of all humans that inhabit the planet. Ameliorating these global challenges will require elements of solutions that include advances in basic and applied research, innovative global engineering, materials discovery, new technologies, manufacturing at scale, resilient and adaptable infrastructure, carbon-free energy sources and storage technologies, and new supply chain networks and markets. Success will require constructive collaborative efforts between researchers in countries located in every continent of this planet. For any of these goals to be realized in a timely fashion, geopolitical leaders must become better educated about this existential challenge and incentivized to act.

Underground Test Area Annual Sampling Report Nevada National Security Site, Nevada (Revision 1, Calendar Year 2018)

The Sampling Plans (Rev. 0 and Rev. 1) ensure routine sampling that is critical to understanding contaminant transport near and downgradient of the underground nuclear testing areas, and is designed to ensure compliance with the UGTA Activity Quality Assurance Plan and the Federal Facility Agreement and Consent Order. This report presents the analytical data for the 2018 calendar year (CY) (January 1 through December 31, 2018) to ensure that the Sampling Plans’ objectives are achieved. Appendix D presents data from samples collected in 2016 and 2017. These results were not reported in previous reports because they were not available from the specialized laboratories at the time of the publication of the reports.
