Fine-Grained Targets for Laser Synthesis of Carbon Nanotubes

A mechanically robust, binder-free, inexpensive target for laser synthesis of carbon nanotubes and a method for making same, comprising the steps of mixing prismatic edge natural flake graphite with a metal powder catalyst and pressing the graphite and metal powder mixture into a mold having a desired target shape.

Surface Exposure Ages of Space-Weathered Grains from Asteroid 25143 Itokawa

Space weathering processes such as solar wind ion irradiation and micrometeorite impacts are widely known to alter the properties of regolith materials exposed on airless bodies. The rates of space weathering processes however, are poorly constrained for asteroid regoliths, with recent estimates ranging over many orders of magnitude. The return of surface samples by JAXA's Hayabusa mission to asteroid 25143 Itokawa, and their laboratory analysis provides "ground truth" to anchor the timescales for space weathering processes on airless bodies.

Stardust Interstellar Preliminary Examination X: Impact Speeds and Directions of Interstellar Grains on the Stardust Dust Collector

On the basis of an interstellar dust model compatible with Ulysses and Galileo observations, we calculate and predict the trajectories of interstellar dust (ISD) in the solar system and the distribution of the impact speeds, directions, and flux of ISD particles on the Stardust Interstellar Dust Collector during the two collection periods of the mission. We find that the expected impact velocities are generally low (less than 10 km per second) for particles with the ratio of the solar radiation pressure force to the solar gravitational force beta greater than 1, and that some of the particles will impact on the cometary side of the collector. If we assume astronomical silicates for particle material and a density of 2 grams per cubic centimeter, and use the Ulysses measurements and the ISD trajectory simulations, we conclude that the total number of (detectable) captured ISD particles may be on the order of 50. In companion papers in this volume, we report the discovery of three interstellar dust candidates in the Stardust aerogel tiles. The impact directions and speeds of these candidates are consistent with those calculated from our ISD propagation model, within the uncertainties of the model and of the observations.

Ti Isotopes: Echoes of Grain-Scale Heterogenaity in the Protoplanetary Disk

Calcium-aluminum-rich inclusions (CAIs) are the oldest surviving solids to have formed in the Solar System. Their chemical and isotopic compositions provide a record of the conditions present in the protoplanetary disk where they formed and can aid our understanding of how solids formed in the solar nebula, an important step in the eventual process of planet building. The isotopic compositions of CAIs are primarily controlled by volatility. Evaporation/sublimation are well understood through both theory and experimental work to produce an enrichment in the heavy isotopes of an element, but less is understood about the effects of condensation. Mass-dependent fractionation can potentially provide a record of nebular condensation. Ti is not likely to experience evaporation due to its refractory nature, making it a useful tool for assessing the effects of condensation. We have undertaken a study of the stable isotope fractionation of Ti isotopes as a tracer of processes that predate the last evaporation events affecting CAIs. We compare the 49Ti/47Ti stable isotope ratio with excess 50Ti common in CAIs. We have collected Ti, Mg, Si, and Ca isotope data for a suite of CAIs in order to search for heterogeneity in each of these isotope systems, and for potential correlations among them. We compare our results to expectations for condensation.

Measuring the Shock Stage of Asteroid Regolith Grains by Electron Back-Scattered Diffraction

We have been analyzing Itokawa samples in order to definitively establish the degree of shock experienced by the regolith of asteroid Itokawa, and to devise a bridge between shock determinations by standard light optical petrography, crystal structures as determined by electron and X-ray diffraction. These techniques would then be available for samples returned from other asteroid regoliths.

DNS of Laminar to Turbulent Transition on NACA 0012 Airfoil with Sand Grain Roughness

The Lattice-Boltzmann-based solver PowerFLOW is used to perform direct numerical simulations of the transitional flow over an airfoil at Reynolds number equal to 0.657 million. The leading edge of the airfoil is covered with sand particles, represented by polyhedra, to mimic the grit used in experiments. The sensitivity of the laminar to turbulent transition to the size of these particles, grid resolution, spanwise length is evaluated and rectangular trips are also tested.
