Highly Nonstoichiometric YAG Ceramics with Modified Luminescence Properties

Abstract Y 3 Al 5 O 12 (YAG) is a widely used phosphor host. Its optical properties are controlled by chemical substitution at its YO 8 or AlO 6 /AlO 4 sublattices, with emission wavelengths defined by rare‐earth and transition‐metal dopants that have been explored extensively. Nonstoichiometric compositions Y 3+x Al 5‐x O 12 ( x ≠ 0) may offer a route to new emission wavelengths by distributing dopants over two or more sublattices simultaneously, producing new local coordination environments for the activator ions. However, YAG typically behaves as a line phase, and such compositions are therefore challenging to synthesize. Here, a series of highly nonstoichiometric Y 3+x Al 5‐x O 12 with 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.40 is reported, corresponding to ≤20% of the AlO 6 sublattice substituted by Y 3+ , synthesized by advanced melt‐quenching techniques. This impacts the up‐conversion luminescence of Yb 3+ /Er 3+ ‐doped systems, whose yellow‐green emission differs from the red‐orange emission of their stoichiometric counterparts. In contrast, the YAG:Ce 3+ system has a different structural response to nonstoichiometry and its down‐conversion emission is only weakly affected. Analogous highly nonstoichiometric systems should be obtainable for a range of garnet materials, demonstrated here by the synthesis of Gd 3.2 Al 4.8 O 12 and Gd 3.2 Ga 4.8 O 12 . This opens pathways to property tuning by control of host stoichiometry, and the prospect of improved performance or new applications for garnet‐type materials.

Insulator‐to‐Metal Transition and Isotropic Gigantic Magnetoresistance in Layered Magnetic Semiconductors

Magnetotransport, the response of electrical conduction to external magnetic field, acts as an important tool to reveal fundamental concepts behind exotic phenomena and plays a key role in enabling spintronic applications. Magnetotransport is generally sensitive to magnetic field orientations. In contrast, efficient and isotropic modulation of electronic transport, which is useful in technology applications such as omnidirectional sensing, is rarely seen, especially for pristine crystals. Here a strategy is proposed to realize extremely strong modulation of electron conduction by magnetic field which is independent of field direction. GdPS, a layered antiferromagnetic semiconductor with resistivity anisotropies, supports a field-driven insulator-to-metal transition with a paradoxically isotropic gigantic negative magnetoresistance insensitive to magnetic field orientations. This isotropic magnetoresistance originates from the combined effects of a near-zero spin–orbit coupling of Gd 3+ -based half-filling ƒ-electron system and the strong on-site f – d exchange coupling in Gd atoms. These results not only provide a novel material system with extraordinary magnetotransport that offers a missing block for antiferromagnet-based ultrafast and efficient spintronic devices, but also demonstrate the key ingredients for designing magnetic materials with desired transport properties for advanced functionalities.

Calibration of the Solid‐State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Search for Axion‐Like Dark Matter

Abstract Calibration of nuclear‐magnetic‐resonance‐based searches for axion‐like dark matter can be performed by free induction decay (FID) measurements. This manu‐ script describes FID experiments on several solid materials, motivated by the Cosmic Axion Spin Precession Experiment (CASPEr) program. Experiments with 207 Pb nuclear spins in ferroelectrics, lead magnesium niobate‐lead titanate (PbMg 1/3 Nb 2/3 O 3 ) (PbTiO 3 ) 1/3 (PMN‐PT) and lead zirconium titante PbZr 0.52 Ti 0.48 O 3 (PZT) are directly relevant to the CASPEr‐electric search for the electric dipole moment interaction of axion‐like dark matter. Experiments with 31 P nuclear spins in gadolinium‐doped hydroxypyromorphite Pb 4.95 Gd 0.05 (PO 4 ) 3 OH (HPM:Gd) are used for apparatus calibration. The measurements characterized the nuclear spin ensemble coherence time and the magnetic resonance detection sensitivity for these samples. Calibration is performed using small tip‐angle pulses.

Structurally Defined Water‐Soluble Metallofullerene Derivatives towards Biomedical Applications

Abstract Endohedral metallofullerenes (EMFs) are excellent carriers of rare‐earth element (REE) ions in biomedical applications because they preclude the release of toxic metal ions. However, existing approaches to synthesize water‐soluble EMF derivatives yield mixtures that inhibit precise drug design. Here we report the synthesis of metallobuckytrio (MBT), a three‐buckyball system, as a modular platform to develop structurally defined water‐soluble EMF derivatives with ligands by choice. Demonstrated with PEG ligands, the resulting water‐soluble MBTs show superb biocompatibility. The Gd MBTs exhibit superior T 1 relaxivity than typical Gd complexes, potentially superseding current clinical MRI contrast agents in both safety and efficiency. The Lu MBTs generated reactive oxygen species upon light irradiation, showing promise as photosensitizers. With their modular nature to incorporate other ligands, we anticipate the MBT platform to open new paths towards bio‐specific REE drugs.

Understanding Reproducibility of Sputter‐Deposited Metastable Ferroelectric Wurtzite Al 0.6 Sc 0.4 N Films Using In Situ Optical Emission Spectrometry

High‐Sc Al 1– x Sc x N thin films are of tremendous interest because of their attractive piezoelectric and ferroelectric properties, but overall film quality and reproducibility are widely reported to suffer as x increases. In this study, structural and electrical properties of metastable Al 0.6 Sc 0.4 N films are connected with plasma changes during film growth, identified via glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GD‐OES), and linked to the target mode changes. This in situ GD‐OES technique uses changes in the N 2 (I) intensity, correlated with DC bias hysteresis behavior of a Al 0.6 Sc 0.4 target in metallic and poisoned modes, to identify films that subsequently exhibit unacceptable structural and electrical performance. Two representative samples deposited under identical conditions but possessing distinct properties related to phases present in the films are focused on. Films sputtered under a poisoned target mode produce pure wurtzite ferroelectric Al 0.6 Sc 0.4 N with a reversible 80 μC cm −1 polarization and 3.1 MV cm −1 coercive field. When identical chamber settings are used but the process starts in metallic mode, a mixed wurtzite/rocksalt film is deposited which exhibits nanometer‐scale changes to the film microstructure and a nonferroelectric response. These results illustrate the utility of optical emission spectroscopy for tracking target mode fluctuations when fabricating metastable materials such as high‐Sc Al 1– x Sc x N films.

Reconfigurable Grating Diffraction Structural Color in Self-Assembled Colloidal Crystals

Self-assembled colloidal crystals display structural colors due to light diffracted from their microscale, ordered structure. This color arises due to Bragg reflection (BR) or grating diffraction (GD); the latter mechanism is much less explored than the former. Here the design space for generating GD structural color is identified and its relative advantages are demonstrated. Electrophoretic deposition is used to self-assemble crystals with fine crystal grains from colloids of diameter 1.0 µm. The structural color in transmission is tunable across the full visible spectrum. The optimum optical response—represented by both color intensity and saturation—is observed at low layer number (≤5 layers). The spectral response is well predicted by Mie scattering of the crystals. Taken together, the experimental and theoretical results demonstrate that vivid grating colors with high color saturation can be produced from thin layers of micron-sized colloids. These colloidal crystals extend the potential of artificial structural color materials.

Petrology and geochemistry of the Middle Pennsylvanian (Langsettian) Clintwood coalbed, Pike County, Kentucky

Abstract The Middle Pennsylvanian, Langsettian sub-stage Clintwood coal, along with its correlatives, was one of the more important energy resources in eastern Kentucky. The coal thickens from the NE-SW-trending Belfry anticline in central Pike County to the southeast, towards the Virginia-Kentucky border. Much of the thickness increase is in the bright lithotypes below a dull lithology. The bright lithologies transition from a bright clarain + vitrain + fusain lithology to a clarain + fusain lithology to the southeast. Half of the lithotypes in the three analyzed sections exceed 1000-µg/g Rare earth elements + Y + Sc (REYSc) (ash basis). The La N /Sm N vs. Gd N /Yb N and La N /Sm N vs. Ce N /Ce N * plots suggest that the top lithotype may have had best indication of an oxidizing environment. Positive Gd N /Gd N * and Eu N /Eu N * in some of the lithologies suggests that there may have been a hydrothermal influence in the sediment sources and/or in the diagenesis of the coal. Consideration of La N /Sm N and Zr (µg/g; ash basis), Zr vs. Sr, and V/Cr vs. inertinite/(inertinite + vitrinite) indicates that the dull lithotypes existed in a distinct geochemical environment compared to the brighter lithotypes. The isolation of the dull lithotypes from the bright lithotypes is supported by principal components analysis on inertinite/(inertinite + vitrinite), La N /Sm N , V/Cr, Sr, and either Zr or Ln(100(TiO 2 )/Al 2 O 3 ).

Microstructure evolution of gadolinium doped cerium oxide under large thermal gradients

In this report the effects of large thermal gradient annealing on the microstructure of 10 mol% gadolinium doped ceria (GDC) were investigated. GDC powder was prepared by solvent deficient method and sintered at 1650 °C for 10 h to achieve dense ceramics with ~8 μm grain size. The densified GDC samples were subsequently annealed using a 60 W infrared laser at over 2100 °C for 1 h under a thermal gradient equivalent to ~0.3–0.5 °C/μm. The post-annealed samples at 2150 °C for 1 h exhibit grains with average length and width of 37 and 28 μm, respectively. Electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) analysis revealed that the post-annealed sample at 2150 °C consists of grains oriented close to five principal directions (<4 3 10>, <0 0 1> and <13 1 14> on [0 0 1], and <7 6 20> and <7 2 7> on [0 1 0]) within a tolerance angle of ±10°, whereas the grains of the pre-annealed sample are randomly oriented. Gadolinium diffuses 20–30 μm away from the irradiated surface, with the measured composition of regions deeper than 30 μm, Ce 0.86 Gd 0.14 O 1.93 , is close to that of the pre-annealed sample, Ce 0.87 Gd 0.13 O 1.94 . Enhancement of total conductivity of the post-annealed GDC (1.1 × 10 -3 S cm -1 at 500 °C, and 2.1 × 10 -2 S cm -1 at 700 °C) is observed when compared to the pre-annealed GDC (3.1 × 10 -5 S cm -1 at 500 °C, and 1.7 × 10 -3 S cm -1 at 700 °C), and points to the decrease in the grain boundary (GB) resistivity. This could be attributed to both the change in GB area and grain alignment.

Magnetic ordering in GdAuAl 4 Ge 2 and TbAuAl 4 Ge 2 : Layered compounds with triangular lanthanide nets

In this work, we report the synthesis and magnetic properties of GdAuAl 4 Ge 2 and TbAuAl 4 Ge 2 , where temperature and magnetic field dependent magnetization, heat capacity, and electrical resistivity measurements reveal that both compounds exhibit several magnetically ordered states at low temperatures, with evidence for magnetic fluctuations extending into the paramagnetic temperature region. For magnetic fields applied in the ab-plane there is particularly rich behavior, with several ordered state regions that are separated by metamagnetic phase transitions. Despite Gd being an isotropic S-state ion and Tb having an anisotropic J-state, there are similarities in the phase diagrams for the two compounds, suggesting that factors such as the symmetry of the crystalline lattice, which features well separated triangular planes of lanthanide ions, or the Ruderman–Kittel–Kasuya– Yosida interaction control the magnetism. We also point out similarities to other centrosymmetric compounds that host skyrmion lattices such as Gd 2 PdSi 3 , and propose that the LnAuAl 4 Ge 2 family of compounds are of interest as reservoirs for complex magnetism and electronic behaviors.

Effect of Added Gadolinium Oxide on the Thermal Air Oxidation of Uranium Dioxide

To develop a more reliable and stable UO2-based nuclear fuel, the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) investigated modifying fuel with several soluble lanthanides and zirconium. This article provides the results of these studies investigating gadolinium doping at levels up to 10 mass%. The authors characterized and compared commercially- and PNNL-prepared gadolinium-doped UO2 to determine the oxygen-to-metal ratio, elemental distribution, chemical composition, physical appearance, lattice parameters, and grain structure using atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy, and X-ray diffractometry. After confirming PNNL-prepared UO2 and (Gd,U)O2 were similar to commercially prepared UO2 and (Gd,U)O2, we measured the thermal behavior of these gadolinium-doped UO2 materials to air oxidation using differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. Addition of gadolinium stabilized the first oxidation product U4¬O9/U3O7 and slowed the subsequent oxidation to U3O8. Comparison of our measured two-step oxidation of UO2 to U3O8 at 325°C to common gas/solid kinetic reaction models found that each oxidation step is best described as a convolution of kinetic behaviors; the gadolinium insertion into the UO2 lattice enforces a significant alteration in mechanism and oxidation rate. Noticeable changes in mechanism become apparent between 1% and 3% gadolinium content.

Precipitation of gadolinium from magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents may be the Brass tacks of toxicity

The formation of gadolinium-rich nanoparticles in multiple tissues from intravenous magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents may be the initial step in rare earth metallosis. The mechanism of gadolinium-induced diseases is poorly understood, as is how these characteristic nanoparticles are formed. Gadolinium deposition has been observed with all magnetic resonance imaging contrast agent brands. Aside from endogenous metals and acidic conditions, little attention has been paid to the role of the biological milieu in the degradation of magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents into nanoparticles. Herein, we describe the decomposition of the commercial magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents Omniscan and Dotarem in the presence of oxalic acid, a well-known endogenous compound. Omniscan dechelated rapidly and preluded measurement by the means available, while Dotarem underwent a two-step decomposition process. The decomposition of both magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents by oxalic acid formed gadolinium oxalate (Gd 2 [C 2 O 4 ] 3 , Gd 2 Ox 3 ). Furthermore, both observed steps of the Dotarem reaction involved the associative addition of oxalic acid. Adding protein (bovine serum albumin) increased the rate of dechelation. Displacement reactions could occur at lysosomal pH. Through these studies, we have demonstrated that magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents can be dissociated by endogenous molecules, thus illustrating a metric by which gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) might be destabilized in vivo.
