Active In-Flight Load Redistribution Utilizing Fiber-Optic Shape Sensing and Multiple Control Surfaces

Morphing wing technologies have gained research interest in recent years as technological advancements pave the way for such innovations. A key benefit of such a morphing wing concept is the ability of the wing to transition into an optimal configuration at multiple flight conditions. Such a morphing wing will have applications not only in drag reduction but also in flutter suppression and gust alleviation. By manipulating the wing geometry to match a given flight profile it is likely that the wing will yield increases in not just aerodynamic efficiency but also structural efficiency. These structurally efficient designs will likely rely on some type of structural sensing system which will ensure the wing maintains positive margins throughout its flight profile.

Design and fabrication of a coherent array of single-mode optical fibers for the nulling coronagraph

We present the development of a single-mode spatial filter array for the nulling coronagraph application. The development consists of two generations of fiber array designs and a Zygo-interferometer based lens array to fiber array alignment methodology. We discuss the use of large mode field diameter (MFD) fibers to relax fiber placement tolerance of the fiber array. The pros and cons of using the Photonic Crystal Fiber (PCF) for building the array are discussed. The future plan for implementing a 1000-channel class, single-mode spatial filter array is described.

Semiconductor lasers beyond the fiber optics telecommunication wavelength

Semiconductor lasers emitting at 1.55 microns are the cornerstone of the high bandwidth optical communications industry. Semiconductor lasers operating at this and other wavelengths are also used in the engineering, biology, chemistry and medical fields. The light emission in most semiconductor lasers is due to the optical transition between the valence and conduction bands of the semiconductor active material. This means that the intrinsic properties of the semiconductor active material i.e., the bandgap energy dictates the emission wavelength. This limits the efficient operation of these lasers at wavelengths above 3 microns. In the mid 1990s this limitation was overcome with the emergence of new laser architectures, such as the intersubband and interband Quantum Cascade (QC) lasers

Using Distributed Fiber-Optic Strain Sensing to Estimate Modal Generalized Modal Coordinates from Flight-Test Data

Background and Motivation - Problem - Contemporary aircraft carry around structural mass so that the flutter instabilities lie well outside of the operational envelope. - Better methods of measuring the structural state could allow reduction of the extra structural weight. - Modal filtering - Standard method in structural analysis - Deformations are a combination of mode shapes - Modal filtering is estimating these modal coordinates from data - Often ordinary least squares methods - Often applied to simpler test articles - Factor Analysis - Classic (in psychology) analysis method - Measurements are a combination of small number of unmeasurable variables - Lessons from this factor can be adapted to improve the modal filtering methods

Multi-Gbps Fiber-Optic Wavefront Sensing Coherent Optical Receiver

We report recent progress on technology developments at the NASA Glenn Research Center using photonic lanterns for coherent optical communications applications. In particular, the development of a spatial mode-diversity optical receiver using a photonic lantern combined with a photonic integrated circuit (PIC). The PIC is designed for compatibility with the NASA Laser Communication Relay Demonstration’s (LCRD) differential phase-shift keying signaling format. We report on the PIC design and future characterization and packaging efforts. Additionally, we report on the development of a 19-channel photonic lantern and provide updates on efforts to use the photonic lantern as a wavefront sensing device. The photonic lantern insertion loss, and spatial-mode transfer characteristics are detailed, as well as the development of a predictive framework in which the intensities in the 19 single-mode output channels are used to reconstruct the wavefront of the light entering the multi-moded input side of the lantern. Finally, we discuss concepts for potential future systems using photonic lanterns and PICs that combine both wavefront sensing and coherent communications onto a single integrated platform.
