Maximally slicing a black hole.

Analytic and computer-derived solutions are presented of the problem of slicing the Schwarzschild geometry into asymptotically flat, asymptotically static, maximal spacelike hypersurfaces. The sequence of hypersurfaces advances forward in time in both halves (u greater than or equal to 0, u less than or equal to 0) of the Kruskal diagram, tending asymptotically to the hypersurface r = 3/2 M and avoiding the singularity at r = 0. Maximality is therefore a potentially useful condition to impose in obtaining computer solutions of Einstein's equations.

Scattering model for X-ray bursts - Massive black holes in globular clusters

A model for the X-ray bursts discovered from 3U 1820-30 (NGC 6624) is presented. The temporal and spectral variations observed in the bursts are interpreted as Compton scattering of a primary pulse in a hot cloud surrounding the X-ray source. The cloud parameters derived imply the presence of a collapsed core in the globular cluster source with a mass greater than several hundred solar masses.

The optical counterpart of GX 339-4, a possible black hole X-ray source

Optical studies of the galactic X-ray source GX 339-4 (4U 1658-48), which led to its recent identification as reported by Doxsey et al. (1979), are presented. Reddening and distance estimates are given, as well as evidence for optical variability on differing time scales. The emission-line spectra and UBV photometry suggest that GX 339-4 may be at about 8 kpc and have a main-sequence B star binary companion. Both the optical spectrum and optical/X-ray luminosity ratio for GX 339-4 may be similar to Cir X-1.

Models of unsaturated Compton disks around supermassive black holes

Two inverse-Compton disk models for the hard X-ray spectra of quasi-stellar objects and active galactic nuclei are studied and compared. One is a slightly generalized version of the Shapiro, Lightman and Eardley optically thin disk model, and the other is a conduction-stabilized Corona model. Observational distinctions between the two models are discussed.

Electron-positron pair production in hot unsaturated Compton accretion models around black holes

Electron-positron pairs photoproduced in conventional unsaturated Compton disk and spherical accretion models with electron temperature greater than 10 to the 9 K are found to dominate over the background electrons. This results in an equilibrium temperature lower than previously found and severely constrains the model parameters in some cases. Electron-positron pair production does not alleviate the thermal instability of the optically thin two-temperature disk model.
