AL-CRADA-2025-01 Final Report: American-Made Wind Turbine Materials Recycling Prize Accelerate! Phase 2

This report summarizes the Phase 2 achievements of the Wind Turbine Materials Recycling Prize project led by Critical Materials Recycling (CMR) in partnership with Ames National Laboratory. The team demonstrated the technical feasibility and economic viability of recovering and reusing rare-earth Nd-Fe-B magnets from end-of-life (EOL) wind turbine generators. Through mechanical disassembly, demagnetization, and precision processing, magnets were harvested and characterized to assess structural, compositional, and magnetic properties. Results showed that recovered magnets performed on par with commercial-grade counterparts, enabling their integration into actuator and motor prototypes without redesign. System-level modeling and finite-element simulations validated operational performance, while Life Cycle Cost (LCC) analysis revealed up to 20% material cost savings and 2–3% reductions in overall motor system costs. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) further confirmed substantial environmental benefits, including a ~94% reduction in global warming potential relative to virgin magnet production. The project’s success was enabled by a tightly integrated partnership between industry and national lab experts, illustrating a viable path for domestic magnet-to-magnet recycling. These findings support a scalable, circular solution for rare-earth material recovery, reducing dependence on imported critical minerals and advancing sustainable clean energy technologies.

Muon to electron conversion search in the presence of Al nuclei at the Fermilab Mu2e experiment: Motivation, Design and Progress

The Mu2e experiment aims to find charged lepton flavor violation(CLFV) by measuring the monochromatic electrons from $\mu^- N\rightarrow e^- N$ conversion with an unprecedented single event sensitivity of $3 \times 10^{-17}$. When completed the experiment will improve the current limit by four orders of magnitude and make a previously unexplored phase space available for the search for beyond the standard model physics. Physics motivation for the experiment is discussed and design choices for the detectors and various sub systems are explained in this document. The construction of the Mu2e experiment is well underway and commissioning will begin in late 2022 with first data taking in late 2025 and 4-5 years of data taking thereafter to reach our goal.

Dataset for the Danczak et al., 2025 manuscript about bacterial-fungal interactions

We generated genome-resolved multiomics data from a series of metagenomic and metatranscriptomic sequencing. Specifically, we acquired, functionally annotated, and taxonomically classified both bacterial and eukaryotic metagenome assembled genomes (MAGs). For bacterial MAGs, we assembled eukaryotic float metagenomic sequencing data from JGI using MEGAHIT, binned and refined MAGs using MetaWRAP and dRep, functionally annotated MAGs using eggNOG mapper, and assigned taxonomy using GTDB-tk. For eukaryotic MAGs, we first identified potentially eukaryotic contigs from a coassembly of eukaryotic float metagenomic sequencing data from JGI using EukRep and Whokaryote, binned MAGs using MetaBAT2, functionally annotated MAGs using eggNOG mapper, and assigned taxonomy using Eukulele. Bulk metatranscriptomic reads were mapped to bacterial MAGs and polyA-metatranscriptomic read were mapped to eukaryotic MAGs using bbmap.

PLEXOS Inputs for Voisin et al. 2020 [Data set]

These data files provide MOSART-WM monthly flows at hydropower dam and HUC4 outlet locations. The flows are transformed into monthly generation constraints scenarios for hydro (generation potential) and thermal power plants (derated capacity) for input to the PLEXOS model. KBase Narrative - van den Bergh et al

We report 14 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) recovered from agricultural soils, composts, and enrichment cultures enriched therefrom, originating from the Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland. Recovered MAGs constitute methane-cycling related organisms sequenced from isolated cultures or environmental DNA, elucidating their metabolic potential in important ecological processes like the oxidation or production of atmospheric trace gases as methane, hydrogen, and carbon monoxide.

3D Printing with Mixed Powders of Boron Carbide and Al Alloy

Laser additive manufacturing with mixed powders of boron carbide and aluminum alloy is investigated. Parameters such as laser power, scan speed, scan pattern, and hatching space are systematically evaluated and optimized to obtain the desired density and porosity. These results show that the AM part contains 20 wt% boron carbide and 80 wt% aluminum alloy, which are well mixed and synthesized during the melting process. Its mechanical properties are close to those of aluminum. A thin-wall structure based two dimensional and three dimensional radial collimators were fabricated with well-controlled geometry for neutron scattering measurement.

Microstructural, Corrosion, and Mechanical Characterization of Friction Stir Welded Al 6022-to-ZEK100 Mg Joints

Friction stir welded (FSW) aluminum–magnesium lightweight vehicle joints have gained significant interest due to their high strength-to-weight ratio. In this work, the corrosion resistance of this material is analyzed through electrochemical tests, which include open circuit potential (OCP) inspection and potentiodynamic polarization (PD) scanning. Weight loss measurements tested the corrosion rate of the FSW weld through cyclic corrosion testing (CCT) according to the standard SAEJ 2334. Mechanical properties were also investigated, including lap-shear strength, micro- and nano-hardness mapping, and true stress–strain curves as a function of local processing history. The electrochemical results indicate that the center weld zone’s corrosion property stays between the two base alloys. Indentation-based testing demonstrated that the weld zone behaves differently from base alloys. Lap shear strength surprisingly did not drop much even after eight weeks of cyclic corrosion tests, indicating that the joint did not allow any ingress of the electrolyte.
