Extended Search for the Invisible Axion with the Axion Dark Matter Experiment

This paper reports on a cavity haloscope search for dark matter axions in the galactic halo in the mass range 2.81–3.31 µeV . This search excludes the full range of axion-photon coupling values predicted in benchmark models of the invisible axion that solve the strong CP problem of quantum chromodynamics. Unprecedented sensitivity in this higher mass range is achieved by deploying an ultra low-noise Josephson parametric amplifier as the first-stage signal amplifier.

Exotic Photonic Molecules via Lennard-Jones-like Potentials

Ultracold systems offer an unprecedented level of control of interactions between atoms. An important challenge is to achieve a similar level of control of the interactions between photons. Towards this goal, we propose a realization of a novel Lennard-Jones-like potential between photons coupled to the Rydberg states via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). This potential is achieved by tuning Rydberg states to a Förster resonance with other Rydberg states. In this work, we consider few-body problems in 1D and 2D geometries and show the existence of self-bound clusters (“molecules”) of photons. We demonstrate that for a few-body problem, the multibody interactions have a significant impact on the geometry of the molecular ground state. This leads to phenomena without counterparts in conventional systems: For example, three photons in two dimensions preferentially arrange themselves in a line configuration rather than in an equilateral-triangle configuration. Our result opens a new avenue for studies of many-body phenomena with strongly interacting photons.

Ultrafast Adsorbate Excitation Probed with Subpicosecond-Resolution X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy

We use a pump-probe scheme to measure the time evolution of the C K-edge x-ray absorption spectrum from CO/Ru(0001) after excitation by an ultrashort high-intensity optical laser pulse. Because of the short duration of the x-ray probe pulse and precise control of the pulse delay, the excitation-induced dynamics during the first picosecond after the pump can be resolved with unprecedented time resolution. By comparing with density functional theory spectrum calculations, we find high excitation of the internal stretch and frustrated rotation modes occurring within 200 fs of laser excitation, as well as thermalization of the system in the picosecond regime. The ~100 fs initial excitation of these CO vibrational modes is not readily rationalized by traditional theories of nonadiabatic coupling of adsorbates to metal surfaces, e.g., electronic frictions based on first order electron-phonon coupling or transient population of adsorbate resonances. Finally, we suggest that coupling of the adsorbate to nonthermalized electron-hole pairs is responsible for the ultrafast initial excitation of the modes.

Floquet Prethermalization with Lifetime Exceeding 90 s in a Bulk Hyperpolarized Solid

Here, we report the observation of long-lived Floquet prethermal states in a bulk solid composed of dipolar-coupled 13 C nuclei in diamond at room temperature. For precessing nuclear spins prepared in an initial transverse state, we demonstrate pulsed spin-lock Floquet control that prevents their decay over multiple-minute-long periods. We observe Floquet prethermal lifetimes $T^{'}_{2}$≈90.9 s, extended >60 000-fold over the nuclear free induction decay times. The spins themselves are continuously interrogated for ~10 min, corresponding to the application of ≈5.8×10 6 control pulses. The 13 C nuclei are optically hyperpolarized by lattice nitrogen vacancy centers; the combination of hyperpolarization and continuous spin readout yields significant signal-to-noise ratio in the measurements. This allows probing the Floquet thermalization dynamics with unprecedented clarity. We identify four characteristic regimes of the thermalization process, discerning short-time transient processes leading to the prethermal plateau and long-time system heating toward infinite temperature. This Letter points to new opportunities possible via Floquet control in networks of dilute, randomly distributed, low-sensitivity nuclei. In particular, the combination of minutes-long prethermal lifetimes and continuous spin interrogation opens avenues for quantum sensors constructed from hyperpolarized Floquet prethermal nuclei.

Direct Measurement of the Nickel Spectrum in Cosmic Rays in the Energy Range from 8.8 GeV/$\mathcal{n}$ to 240 GeV/$\mathcal{n}$ with CALET on the International Space Station

The relative abundance of cosmic ray nickel nuclei with respect to iron is by far larger than for all other transiron elements; therefore it provides a favorable opportunity for a low background measurement of its spectrum. Since nickel, as well as iron, is one of the most stable nuclei, the nickel energy spectrum and its relative abundance with respect to iron provide important information to estimate the abundances at the cosmic ray source and to model the Galactic propagation of heavy nuclei. However, only a few direct measurements of cosmic-ray nickel at energy larger than ~ 3 GeV/n are available at present in the literature, and they are affected by strong limitations in both energy reach and statistics. In this Letter, we present a measurement of the differential energy spectrum of nickel in the energy range from 8.8 to 240 GeV/n , carried out with unprecedented precision by the Calorimetric Electron Telescope (CALET) in operation on the International Space Station since 2015. The CALET instrument can identify individual nuclear species via a measurement of their electric charge with a dynamic range extending far beyond iron (up to atomic number Z = 40 ). The particle’s energy is measured by a homogeneous calorimeter (1.2 proton interaction lengths, 27 radiation lengths) preceded by a thin imaging section (3 radiation lengths) providing tracking and energy sampling. This Letter follows our previous measurement of the iron spectrum [O. Adriani et al. (CALET Collaboration), Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 241101 (2021).], and it extends our investigation on the energy dependence of the spectral index of heavy elements. It reports the analysis of nickel data collected from November 2015 to May 2021 and a detailed assessment of the systematic uncertainties. In the region from 20 to 240 GeV/n our present data are compatible within the errors with a single power law with spectral index -2.51 ± 0.07 .

Measurement of Compton Scattering at MAMI for the Extraction of the Electric and Magnetic Polarizabilities of the Proton

A precise measurement of the differential cross sections dσ/dΩ and the linearly polarized photon beam asymmetry Σ 3 for Compton scattering on the proton below pion threshold has been performed with a tagged photon beam and almost 4π detector at the Mainz Microtron. The incident photons were produced by the recently upgraded Glasgow-Mainz photon tagging facility and impinged on a cryogenic liquid hydrogen target, with the scattered photons detected in the Crystal Ball/TAPS setup. Using the highest statistics Compton scattering data ever measured on the proton along with two effective field theories (both covariant baryon and heavy-baryon) and one fixed-t dispersion relation model, constraining the fits with the Baldin sum rule, we have obtained the proton electric and magnetic polarizabilities with unprecedented precision: α E1 = 10.99 ± 0.16 ± 0.47 ± 0.17 ± 0.34, β M1 = 3.14 ± 0.21 ± 0.24 ± 0.20 ± 0.35; in units of 10 -4 fm 3 where the errors are statistical, systematic, spin polarizability dependent, and model dependent.

Transient Relativistic Plasma Grating to Tailor High-Power Laser Fields, Wakefield Plasma Waves, and Electron Injection

In this work, we show the first experiment of a transverse laser interference for electron injection into the laser plasma accelerators. Simulations show such an injection is different from previous methods, as electrons are trapped into later acceleration buckets other than the leading ones. With optimal plasma tapering, the dephasing limit of such unprecedented electron beams could be potentially increased by an order of magnitude. In simulations, the interference drives a relativistic plasma grating, which triggers the splitting of relativistic-intensity laser pulses and wakefield. Consequently, spatially dual electron beams are accelerated, as also confirmed by the experiment.

Low-Pressure Electrochemical Synthesis of Complex High-Pressure Superconducting Superhydrides

There is great current interest in multicomponent superhydrides due to their unique quantum properties under pressure. A remarkable example is the ternary superhydride Li 2 MgH 16 computationally identified to have an unprecedented high superconducting critical temperature T c of ~470 K at 250 GPa. However, the very high synthesis pressures required remains a significant hurdle for detailed study and potential applications. In this Letter, we evaluate the feasibility of synthesizing ternary Li-Mg superhydrides by the recently proposed pressure-potential (P 2 ) method that uniquely combines electrochemistry and applied pressure to control synthesis and stability. Furthermore, the results indicate that it is possible to synthesize Li-Mg superhydrides at modest pressures by applying suitable electrode potentials. Using pressure alone, no Li-Mg ternary hydrides are predicted to be thermodynamically stable, but in the presence of electrode potentials, both Li 2 MgH 16 and Li 4 MgH 24 can be stabilized at modest pressures. Three polymorphs are predicted as ground states of Li 2 MgH 16 below 300 GPa, with transitions at 33 and 160 GPa. The highest pressure phase is superconducting, while the two at lower pressures are not. Our findings point out the potentially important role of the P 2 method in controlling phase stability of complex multicomponent superhydrides.

Impact of Clustering on the Li 8 β Decay and Recoil Form Factors

We place unprecedented constraints on recoil corrections in the β decay of 8 Li, by identifying a strong correlation between them and the 8 Li ground state quadrupole moment in large-scale ab initio calculations. The results are essential for improving the sensitivity of high-precision experiments that probe the weak interaction theory and test physics beyond the standard model. In addition, our calculations predict a 2 + state of the α + α system that is energetically accessible to β decay but has not been observed in the experimental 8 Be energy spectrum, and has an important effect on the recoil corrections and β decay for the A = 8 systems. Furthermore, this state and an associated 0 + state are notoriously difficult to model due to their cluster structure and collective correlations, but become feasible for calculations in the ab initio symmetry-adapted no-core shell-model framework.

Nonlocal Interactions in Moiré Hubbard Systems

Moiré materials formed in two-dimensional semiconductor heterobilayers are quantum simulators of Hubbard-like physics with unprecedented electron density and interaction strength tunability. Compared to atomic scale Hubbard-like systems, electrons or holes in moiré materials are less strongly attracted to their effective lattice sites because these are defined by finite-depth potential extrema. As a consequence, nonlocal interaction terms like interaction-assisted hopping and intersite exchange are more relevant. Here, we theoretically demonstrate the possibility of tuning the strength of these coupling constants to favor unusual states of matter, including spin liquids, insulating ferromagnets, and superconductors.

Exploiting Spin Fluctuations for Enhanced Pure Spin Current

We demonstrate the interplay of pure spin current, spin-polarized current, and spin fluctuation in 3d Ni x Cu 1–x . By tuning the compositions of the Ni x Cu 1–x alloys, we separate the effects due to the pure spin current and spin-polarized current. By exploiting the interaction of spin current with spin fluctuation in suitable Ni-Cu alloys, we obtain an unprecedentedly high spin Hall angle of 46%, about 5 times larger than that in Pt, at room temperature. Furthermore, we show that spin-dependent thermal transport via anomalous Nernst effect can serve as a sensitive magnetometer to electrically probe the magnetic phase transitions in thin films with in-plane anisotropy. As a result, the enhancement of spin Hall angle by exploiting spin current fluctuation via composition control makes 3d magnets functional materials in charge-to-spin conversion for spintronic application.

Reentrant Correlated Insulators in Twisted Bilayer Graphene at 25 T ( 2 π Flux)

Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) is remarkable for its topological flat bands, which drive strongly interacting physics at integer fillings, and its simple theoretical description facilitated by the Bistritzer-MacDonald Hamiltonian, a continuum model coupling two Dirac fermions. Because of the large moiré unit cell, TBG offers the unprecedented opportunity to observe reentrant Hofstadter phases in laboratory-strength magnetic fields near 25 T. This Letter is devoted to magic angle TBG at 2π flux where the magnetic translation group commutes. Here we use a newly developed gauge-invariant formalism to determine the exact single-particle band structure and topology. We find that the characteristic TBG flat bands reemerge at 2π flux, but, due to the magnetic field breaking C 2z T, they split and acquire Chern number ±1. We show that reentrant correlated insulating states appear at 2π flux driven by the Coulomb interaction at integer fillings, and we predict the characteristic Landau fans from their excitation spectrum.

Stimulated Rayleigh Scattering Enhanced by a Longitudinal Plasma Mode in a Periodically Driven Dirac Semimetal Cd 3 As 2

Using broadband (12–45 THz) multi-terahertz spectroscopy, we show that stimulated Rayleigh scattering dominates the transient optical conductivity of cadmium arsenide, a Dirac semimetal, under an optical driving field at 30 THz. Here, the characteristic dispersive line shape with net optical gain is accounted for by optical transitions between light-induced Floquet subbands, strikingly enhanced by the longitudinal plasma mode. Stimulated Rayleigh scattering with an unprecedentedly large refractive index change may pave the way for slow light generation in conductive solids at room temperature.

Valley-Tunable Even-Denominator Fractional Quantum Hall State in the Lowest Landau Level of an Anisotropic System

Fractional quantum Hall states (FQHSs) at even-denominator Landau level filling factors (v) are of prime interest as they are predicted to host exotic, topological states of matter. Here, we report here the observation of a FQHS at v = 1/2 in a two-dimensional electron system of exceptionally high quality, confined to a wide AlAs quantum well, where the electrons can occupy multiple conduction-band valleys with an anisotropic effective mass. The anisotropy and multivalley degree of freedom offer an unprecedented tunability of the v = 1/2 FQHS as we can control both the valley occupancy via the application of in-plane strain, and the ratio between the strengths of the short- and long-range Coulomb interaction by tilting the sample in the magnetic field to change the electron charge distribution. Thanks to this tunability, we observe phase transitions from a compressible Fermi liquid to an incompressible FQHS and then to an insulating phase as a function of tilt angle. We find that this evolution and the energy gap of the v = 1/2 FQHS depend strongly on valley occupancy.

Particle Dynamics in a Diblock-Copolymer-Based Dodecagonal Quasicrystal and Its Periodic Approximant by X-Ray Photon Correlation Spectroscopy

Temperature-dependent X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) measurements are reported for a binary diblock copolymer blend that self-assembles into an aperiodic dodecagonal quasicrystal (DDQC) and a periodic Frank-Kasper σ phase approximant. The measured structural relaxation times are Bragg scattering wavevector-independent and are five times faster in the DDQC than the σ phase, with minimal temperature dependence. Further, the underlying dynamical relaxations are ascribed to differences in particle motion at the grain boundaries within each of these tetrahedrally close-packed assemblies. These results identify unprecedented particle dynamics measurements of tetrahedrally-coordinated micellar block polymers, thus expanding the application of XPCS to ordered soft materials.

Search for Periodic Time Variations of the Solar 8 B Neutrino Flux between 1996 and 2018 in Super-Kamiokande

We report a search for time variations of the solar 8 B neutrino flux using 5804 live days of Super-Kamiokande data collected between May 31, 1996, and May 30, 2018. Super-Kamiokande measured the precise time of each solar neutrino interaction over 22 calendar years to search for solar neutrino flux modulations with unprecedented precision. Periodic modulations are searched for in a dataset comprising five-day interval solar neutrino flux measurements with a maximum likelihood method. We also applied the Lomb-Scargle method to this dataset to compare it with previous reports. The only significant modulation found is due to the elliptic orbit of the Earth around the Sun. The observed modulation is consistent with astronomical data: we measured an eccentricity of (1.53 ± 0.35)%, and a perihelion shift of (−1.5 ± 13.5) days.

Tokamak Plasmas with Density up to 10 Times the Greenwald Limit

Current-carrying, toroidal laboratory plasmas typically cannot be sustained with an electron density above the empirical Greenwald limit. Presented here are tokamak experiments in the Madison Symmetric Torus with a density up to an unprecedented level about ten times this limit. This is thought to be made possible in part by a thick, stabilizing, conductive wall, and a high-voltage, feedback-controlled power supply driving the plasma current. The radial profile of the toroidal current flattens around twice the limit, without the edge collapse routinely observed in other experiments.
