University role in astronaut life support systems: Portable thermal control systems

One of the most vital life support systems is that used to provide the astronaut with an adequate thermal environment. State-of-the-art techniques are reviewed for collecting and rejecting excess heat loads from the suited astronaut. Emphasis is placed on problem areas which exist and which may be suitable topics for university research. Areas covered include thermal control requirements and restrictions, methods of heat absorption and rejection or storage, and comparison between existing methods and possible future techniques.

Checkout systems: Summary report for the universal control and display console

The development of a unified test equipment checkout concept based on a universal control and display console system is discussed. The checkout requirements are analyzed for the shuttle and space station. Capability, size, utilization requirements and specifications of the ground checkout system are made on the basis of engineering trade-off studies. Recommendations related to the attainment of overall unified test equipment conceptual goals and objectives are submitted.

University role in astronaut life support systems: Extravehicular guidance and stabilization in space

Two problem areas are reviewed: (1) the nature of and approach to the EVA mission and (2) the guidance and stabilization required of such a mission. The report indicates several broad areas in which additional research is needed to provide an advance to the state-of-the-art. Moreover, the research problems cited were chosen from among many as those most amenable to research and study in the university environment.

University role in astronaut life support systems: Space power supply systems

A brief description is given of the schemes suggested for providing electrical power aboard spacecraft. An attempt was made to list the major advantages and disadvantages of each scheme and to identify the particular areas in which it appears likely further research work may prove fruitful. Special attention was given to those research areas that appear suitable for colleges and university work. Chemical, solar, and nuclear power sources are considered together with the appropriate thermoelectric and turboelectric conversion systems.

Ultrahigh energy photons, electrons, and neutrinos, the microwave background, and the universal cosmic-ray hypothesis

The production of ultrahigh energy photons, electrons and neutrinos as the decay products of pions produced in photomeson interactions between cosmic ray nucleons and the blackbody microwave background is discussed in terms of the resultant energy spectra of these particles. Simple asymptotic formulas are given for calculating the ultrahigh energy photon spectrum predicted for the universal cosmic ray hypothesis and the resulting spectra are compared with those obtained previously by numerical means using a different propagation equation for the photons. Approximate analytic solutions for the photon spectra are given in terms of simple power-law energy functions and slowly varying logarithmic functions.

Exact solutions to Brans-Dicke cosmologies in flat Friedmann universes.

The Brans-Dicke cosmological equations for flat Friedmann-type expanding universes are solved parametrically for time, density, expansion parameter, and scalar field. These results reduce to a previously obtained exact solution to the radiation cosmology. Although the scalar field may be undetectable at the present epoch, it is felt that, if it exists, it must play an important role as one approaches the initial singularity of the cosmology.

Disk and ring structure in the universe.

For a gas or dust cloud with a net angular momentum about a central mass, the stable shape is a rotating ring or disk, for a very simple reason. Collisions among the cloud's particles dissipate the energy of the random motions, while the rotational energy is maintained by the conservation of angular momentum. The angular momentum can be very easily imparted to matter. A ring or disk structure is, therefore, found in many celestial objects from asteroids to galaxies. The most impressive and obvious disk structures in the universe are the spiral galaxies. It is thought that the planetary system was formed from a flat disk of dust and gas. Much observational evidence shows that the thin, flat, concentric rings around the planet Saturn are composed of a host of individual particles.

Universal voice processor development

The development of a universal voice processor is discussed. The device is based on several circuit configurations using hybrid techniques to satisfy the electrical specifications. The steps taken during the design process are described. Circuit diagrams of the final design are presented. Mathematical models are included to support the theoretical aspects.

The use of iron and extended applications of the University of Virginia Cold Balance Wind Tunnel System

The prototype design of the University of Virginia Cold Magnetic Balance Wind Tunnel System, primarily for assured performance, is based on the use of ferrites for the magnetic support element and for the case of spinning missile configurations in supersonic flow. The extension of applicability to noncontinuously spinning airplane configurations and to subsonic flow regimes would be highly desirable. The problems involved in these extensions are discussed. The possible use of iron for the magnetic support element, or some material reasonable equivalent, is found to be crucial. The existing theoretical evidence that iron may be used without penalty is summarized.

Coordination and establishment of centralized facilities and services of the University of Alaska ERTS survey of the Alaskan environment

The author has identified the following significant results. The objective of this project is to provide a focus for the entire University of Alaska ERTS-1 effort (12 projects covering 10 disciplines and involving 8 research institutes and science departments). Activities have been concentrated on the implementation of the project's three primary functions: (1) coordination and management of the U of A ERTS-1 program, including management of the flow of data and data products; (2) acquisition, installation, test, operation, and maintanence of centralized facilities for processing ERTS-1, aircraft, and ground truth data; and (3) development of photographic and digital techniques for processing and interpreting ERTS-1 and aircraft data. With minor exceptions these three functions are now well-established and working smoothly.

Universal stowage module for future space exploration

The development, design, and fabrication of a prototype storage module, with internal restraints, for the stowage of items that are normally launched to support a space mission are discussed. The primary design criteria was that the storage module be universal in accomodating most sizes and shapes of items that could be launched and returned in a shuttle payload. Mechanical drawings of various types of storage modules are provided.

The deuterium puzzle in the symmetric universe

An attempt was made to use deuterium abundance in the symmetric universe to prove that no nucleosynthesis takes place during annihilation and therefore neutrons were loss before nucleosynthesis. Data cover nucleosynthesis during the radiative era, cross section estimates, maximum abundance of He-4 at the end of nucleosynthesis area, and loss rate.
