Fine wavelength id for tunable laser local oscillators

A wavelength ID device which consists of an electronic show that the etalon has a finesse F 30 which is maintainable for several days. These tests also demonstrate that the etalon system is capable of resonance frequency stability during similar time periods. With currently available coatings, this level of performance is achievable over an optical bandwidth delta lambda = 3 micrometers centered at lambda = 10 micrometers.

Tunable birefringent networks

Consideration is given to mechanically tuned birefringent filters for the spectral range 4500-7500 A with bandpasses as narrow as 50 mA and stability of better than 5 mA. Two tuning techniques are described: optical path change and waveplate tuning. The tuning techniques are mechanically simple and require minimal demands on encoders and drive electronics. Tuning to a random wavelength can be accomplished in less than one second while adjacent wavelengths can be reached in a fraction of a second.

Microprogramed Sequencer for Tunable RF Oscillator

Standard IC chips and digitally tuned oscillator combined. Circuit consists of PROM-based microprogramed control sequencer, which drives group of diode switches to select one of eight tuning capacitors in L-C oscillator. Circuit originally designed to "dither" transmitter frequency of K-band radar at high rates finds application in other areas, as automated test equipment or computer-controlled receiver tuning.

Tunable birefringent filters

This article reviews the types and capabilities of birefringent filters. The general operating principles of Lyot (perfect polarizers), partial polarizing, and Solc (no internal polarizers) filters are introduced. Appropriate techniques for tuning each filter type are presented. Field of view of birefringent filters is discussed and is compared to Fabry-Perot and interference filters. The transmission and throughput advantages of birefringent filters are shown. Finally, the current state of the art in practical filters is reviewed.

Tunable diode laser heterodyne spectrometer for remote observations near 8 microns

Infrared heterodyne spectroscopy is a passive technique employing coherent optical detection for the study of spectral features in remote sources. It employs optical components such as mirrors and lenses normally associated with incoherent optics, but because of it's coherent nature, it offers the advantages of ultrahigh spectral resolving power, high frequency precision, and diffraction limited field-of-view. Attention is given to the development of an ultrahigh resolution diode laser heterodyne spectrometer for observational and laboratory use. The instrument is designed for operation in the spectral range from 7.5 to 8.5 microns. A PbSe tuneable diode laser (TDL) is employed as local oscillator. A closed-cycle cooler is employed to keep the oscillator at operating temperatures in the range from 12 to 60 K. Attention is given to factors determining the TDL heterodyne sensitivity, the spectrometer design, and a survey of 8 micron observations, SiO could be detected in the sunspot spectrum.

Relative quantum yield of I-asterisk(2P1/2) in the tunable laser UV photodissociation of i-C3F7I and n-C3F7I - Effect of temperature and exciplex emission

Wavelength-specific relative quantum yields of metastable I from pulsed laser photodissociation of i-C3F7I and n-C3F7I in the range 265-336 nm are determined by measuring the time-resolved infrared emission from the atomic I(P-2(1/2) P-2(3/2) transition. It is shown that although this yield appears to be unity from 265 to 298 nm, it decreases dramatically at longer wavelengths. Values are also reported for the enhancement of emission from metastable I due to exciplex formation at several temperatures. The exciplex formation emission increases linearly with parent gas pressure, but decreases with increasing temperature. Absorption spectra of i- and n-C3F7I between 303 and 497 K are presented, and the effect of temperature on the quantum yields at selected wavelengths greater than 300 nm, where increasing the temperature enhances the absorption considerably, are given. The results are discussed in regard to the development of solar-pumped iodine lasers.

Lead salt diode lasers and development of tunable solid state lasers for remote sensing

Extensive studies of the output characteristics of single quantum well lead-telluride lasers developed at the General Motors Research Laboratories were carried out. Threshold currents, output powers and line structures were measured as a function of temperature. Very low-current lasing thresholds, record high operating temperatures and over 30% tuning ranges were achieved. Excellent reproducibilities, good far-field patterns and reasonable linewidths (approx. 500 kHz) were found.

Automated control and data acquisition for a tunable diode laser heterodyne spectrometer

This paper describes the hardware and software design, development, and implementation of the control and data electronics of a laser heterodyne spectrometer instrument being built at NASA Langley Research Center for a technology demonstration. Functional partitioning, applied at all levels of hardware and software, has been found to provide expedient design, development, and testing of the instrument. The instrument is composed of distributed microprocessor-based units. A master/slave protocol is presented which can be simulated by a terminal for unit checkout. All but one of the units are implemented using a set of core boards, plus unique boards where necessary. This design has led to reduced hardware development, reduced parts inventory, and replication of software modules, while providing the flexibility needed for a development instrument. The development tools and documentation guidelines are discussed.

Atmospheric aerosol backscatter measurements using a tunable coherent CO2 lidar

Measurements of atmospheric aerosol backscatter coefficients, using a coherent CO2 lidar at 9.25- and 10.6-micron wavelengths, are described. Vertical profiles of the volume backscatter coefficient beta have been measured to a 10-km altitude over the Pasadena, CA, region. These measurements indicate a wide range of variability in beta both in and above the local boundary layer. Certain profiles also indicate a significant enhancement in beta at the 9.25-micron wavelength compared with beta at the 10.6-micron wavelength, which possibly indicates a major contribution to the volume backscatter from ammonium sulfate aerosol particles.

Tunable Heterodyne Receiver from 100 Micron to 1,000 Micron for Airborne Observations

Interest in high resolution spectrometers for the submillimeter wavelength range from 100 micron to 1,000 micron is mostly stimulated by molecular spectroscopy in radioastronomy and atmospheric physics, and by plasma diagnostic experiments. Schottky diodes in waveguide mixer technology and InSb-hot electron bolometers are successfully used in the 0.5 to a few millimeter range whereas tandem Fabry-Perot spectrometers combined with photoconductive detectors (Ge:Sb and Ge:Ga) are used for the 100 micron range. Recent research on heterodyne spectrometers, with Schottky diodes in an open structure mixer and a molecular laser as local oscillators, which can be used over the whole wavelength range is summarized.

A solid state tunable laser for resonance measurements of atmospheric sodium

The measurement of wave dynamics in the upper mesosphere using a solid-state laser to excite the resonance fluorescence line of sodium is examined. Two Nd:YAG lasers are employed to produce the sodium resonance line. The method involves mixing the 1064 nm radiation with that from a second Nd:YAG operating at 1319 nm in a nonlinear infrared crystal to directly produce 589 nm radiation by sum frequency generation. The use of the transmitter to measure the sodium layer from the Space Shuttle Platform is proposed. A diagram of the laser transmitter is presented.

Calibration of the EGRET high-energy gamma-ray telescope in the range 20-10,000 MeV with a tunable beam of quasi-monoenergetic gamma rays at SLAC

The EGRET telescope, one of the instruments to be carried on NASA's Gamma Ray Observatory, is designed to explore the high-energy portion (20-24,000 MeV) of the electromagnetic spectrum. A calibration source of gamma-rays over this wide energy range has been used together with an appropriate set of intensity-monitoring instruments, to conduct a calibration of the EGRET telescope over this energy range for the full telescope aperture. The calibration method and an overview of the results are described.
