The production of excited molecular species by electron impact in high temperature nonequilibrium air

Low-energy electron-impact excitation cross sections of N2 and CO are calculated using the Schwinger multichannel formulation, and calculations are extended to the important threshold region where experimental measurement becomes difficult. Cross sections are used to determine the excitation rate coefficients for the production of the important radiative states of N2 at a variety of electronic, rotational, and vibrational temperatures. Excitation of these states requires at least 6.2 eV, and the rate coefficients increase with the electronic temperature. The dependence on the vibrational temperature is mainly determined by the shape of the potential function for the vibrational motion. A strong resonance feature near threshold is found for the excitation of CO, in agreement with previous measurements.

Fatigue delamination behavior of PEEK thermoplastic composite laminates

The delamination resistance of graphite-reinforced PEEK composites was quantified by conducting static and cyclic edge delamination tests on (35n/-35n/0n/90n)s AS4/PEEK laminates, where n = 1, 2. The experimentally determined mechanical delamination onset strains were used to calculate the critical strain-energy release rate for delamination onset as a function of fatigue cycle. The delamination onset strains decreased dramatically with fatigue cycles and then began to level off to an endurance limit at 1 million cycles. Although the static interlaminar fracture toughness of the AS4/PEEK composite is much greater than the toughness of graphite epoxy composites, the delamination fatigue threshold, calculated from the cyclic strain endurance limit at 1 million cycles, was only slightly greater than the threshold for graphite epoxy composites. The contribution of residual thermal stresses to delamination in the AS4/PEEK is substantial due to the large temperature range between the manufacture and the room temperatures.

Measurement of electron-impact excitation in boronlike carbon

The cross section for the electron-impact excitation of C(+) (2s2 2p 2P0)-(2s2p2 2D) is measured in a colliding-beams apparatus for several collision energies near the threshold for the process. A cross section of (1.1 + or - 0.3) x 10 to the -16th sq cm at threshold is found. Reasonable agreement is found with close-coupling calculations.

A space-time stochastic model of rainfall for satellite remote-sensing studies

A model of the spatial and temporal distribution of rainfall is described that produces random spatial rainfall patterns with these characteristics: (1) the model is defined on a grid with each grid point representing the average rain rate over the surrounding grid box, (2) rain occurs at any one grid point, on average, a specified percentage of the time and has a lognormal probability distribution, (3) spatial correlation of the rainfall can be arbitrarily prescribed, and (4) time stepping is carried out so that large-scale features persist longer than small-scale features. Rain is generated in the model from the portion of a correlated Gaussian random field that exceeds a threshold. The portion of the field above the threshold is rescaled to have a lognormal probability distribution. Sample output of the model designed to mimic radar observations of rainfall during the Global Atmospheric Research Program Atlantic Tropical Experiment (GATE), is shown. The model is intended for use in evaluating sampling strategies for satellite remote-sensing of rainfall and for development of algorithms for converting radiant intensity received by an instrument from its field of view into rainfall amount.

The effect of radiation on the long term productivity of a plant based CELSS

Mutations occur at a higher rate in space than under terrestrial conditions, primarily due to an increase in radiation levels. These mutations may effect the productivity of plants found in a controlled ecological life support system (CELSS). Computer simulations of plants with different ploidies, modes of reproduction, lethality thresholds, viability thresholds and susceptibilities to radiation induced mutations were performed under space normal and solar flare conditions. These simulations identified plant characteristics that would enable plants to retain high productivities over time in a CELSS.

Land mobile satellite transmission measurements at 869 MHz. A comparison of error probabilities for various message block durations and fade margins as a function of vegetation shadowing

In order to give vehicles travelling in rural areas of the U.S. access to the telephone network, a Land Mobile Satellite System is being planned. Previously presented data by the author were analyzed for the probability that the received signal level dropped below a threshold during short time blocks of various signal durations and the conditional probability that such an event would reoccur after a given delay. If it assumed that a fade threshold crossing of even 1 msec would produce an error in the transmission, then the derived quantities can be considered error probabilities. Extensive tables and graphs are presented with the results from the analysis. They can be used to devise communication strategies which will provide improved link availability in the presence of vegetation shadowing.

Satellite rainfall retrieval by logistic regression

The potential use of logistic regression in rainfall estimation from satellite measurements is investigated. Satellite measurements provide covariate information in terms of radiances from different remote sensors. The logistic regression technique can effectively accommodate many covariates and test their significance in the estimation. The outcome from the logistical model is the probability that the rainrate of a satellite pixel is above a certain threshold. By varying the thresholds, a rainrate histogram can be obtained, from which the mean and the variant can be estimated. A logistical model is developed and applied to rainfall data collected during GATE, using as covariates the fractional rain area and a radiance measurement which is deduced from a microwave temperature-rainrate relation. It is demonstrated that the fractional rain area is an important covariate in the model, consistent with the use of the so-called Area Time Integral in estimating total rain volume in other studies. To calibrate the logistical model, simulated rain fields generated by rainfield models with prescribed parameters are needed. A stringent test of the logistical model is its ability to recover the prescribed parameters of simulated rain fields. A rain field simulation model which preserves the fractional rain area and lognormality of rainrates as found in GATE is developed. A stochastic regression model of branching and immigration whose solutions are lognormally distributed in some asymptotic limits has also been developed.

Towards a damage tolerance philosophy for composite materials and structures

A damage-threshold/fail-safe approach is proposed to ensure that composite structures are both sufficiently durable for economy of operation, as well as adequately fail-safe or damage tolerant for flight safety. Matrix cracks are assumed to exist throughout the off-axis plies. Delamination onset is predicted using a strain energy release rate characterization. Delamination growth is accounted for in one of three ways: either analytically, using delamination growth laws in conjunction with strain energy release rate analyses incorporating delamination resistance curves; experimentally, using measured stiffness loss; or conservatively, assuming delamination onset corresponds to catastrophic delamination growth. Fail-safety is assessed by accounting for the accumulation of delaminations through the thickness. A tension fatigue life prediction for composite laminates is presented as a case study to illustrate how this approach may be implemented. Suggestions are made for applying the damage-threshold/fail-safe approach to compression fatigue, tension/compression fatigue, and compression strength following low velocity impact.

Telemetry SNR improvement using the DSN Advanced Receiver with results for Pioneer 10

A series of tracking tests was conducted in the spring of 1987 to demonstrate the reduced tracking threshold and the improved telemetry singal-to-noise-ratio performance of the DSN Advanced Receiver compared to current operational DSN systems. The Pioneer 10 spacecraft, which is now out of the solar system, was tracked on foud days. The Advanced Receiver achieved an improvement in telemetry SNR of 1 to 1.5 dB over the operational system. It was demonstrated that the spacecraft carrier signal is stable enough for tracking with a receiver carrier loop bandwidth of 0.5 Hz in the one-way mode and 0.1 Hz in the three-way mode, and that the Advanced Receiver is stable at 0.1 Hz. This reduces tracking threshold by 10 to 15 dB compared to current receivers, which have minimum loop bandwidths of 1 to 3 Hz. Thus, the Advanced Receiver will enable tracking of the Pioneer 10 spacecraft until its power source fails, circa 2000, which would not be possible with the current DSN system.

New acousto-ultrasonic techniques applied to aerospace materials

The use of an NdYAG pulsed laser for generating ultrasonic waves for NDE in resin matrix composites was investigated. A study was conducted of the use of the 1.064 micron wavelength NdYAG pulsed laser with the neat, unreinforced resin as well as graphite fiber/polymer composite specimens. In the case of the neat resins it was found that, at normal incidence, about 25 percent of the laser pulse energy was reflected at the incident surface. An attenuation coefficient for the polyimide resin, PMR-15 was determined to be approximately 5.8 np/cm. It was found in energy balance studies that graphite fiber/polymer specimens attenuate the laser beam more than do neat resins. The increase absorption is in the graphite fibers. The occurrence of laser induced surface damage was also studied. For the polymer neat resin, damage appears as pit formation over a small fraction of the pulse impact area and discoloration over a larger part of the area. A damage threshold was inferred from observed damage as a function of pulse energy. The 600 F cured PMR-15 and PMR-11 exhibit about the same amount of damage for a given laser pulse energy. The damage threshold is between 0.06 and 0.07 J/sq cm.

Limiting energy spectrum of a saturated radiation belt

The condition for magnetospheric wave growth in the presence of anisotropic charged particle distributions is used to extend the Kennel-Petschek theory that traditionally imposes an upper bound on the integral flux of charged particles at energies above a certain threshold to provide a limit on the differential flux at any energy above this threshold. A closed-form expression is derived for the limiting energy spectrum consistent with marginal occurrence of a magnetospheric maser at all wave frequencies below a certain fraction of the electron or proton gyrofrequency. The bounded integral can be recast in such a way that repeated differentiations with respect to v(parallel) actually generate a closed expression for the limiting form of the velocity space distribution, and thus for the limiting energy spectrum of the corresponding particles, whenever the anisotropy parameter is an integer.

Theoretical studies of the potential surface for the F + H2 - HF + H reaction

Several aspects of the F + H2 - HF + H potential energy hypersurface are considered. The classical barrier height is studied as a function of improvements to both the one-particle and n-particle treatments, approaching the one-particle basis set limit. The externally contracted CI (CCI) method is used to compute bending potentials in the collinear saddle point region. The calculated CCI surface is used to locate the bottleneck on the vibrationally adiabatic potential curve, and the reaction threshold is deduced from a one-dimensinal tunneling calculation. The true classical barrier height is estimated by adjusting the CCI barrier height for the difference in the calculated and experimental thresholds.

CMOS detector cells for holographic optical interconnects in microcircuits

This paper reports on the characterization of CMOS detectors for holographic optical interconnects in micro circuits. A VLSI temporal response system has been built, which has high-magnification viewing capabilities to facilitate the identification of the sample area under investigation. An isolated photodiode and load circuit has been characterized to determine responsivity, response time, and light spot positioning effects. The threshold of optical gate cells incorporating the above detectors and a transistor inverter stage to couple to other circuitry has been determined. The rise time and fall time of the optical gate cells have also been determined experimentally. The results were compared with the results of SPICE simulation, and show satisfactory agreement. The time delay of optical gate cell output was thus determined to be 70 ns at 10 microW light input. Threshold power was 0.5 microW light input.

Statistical analysis of effective singular values in matrix rank determination

A major problem in using SVD (singular-value decomposition) as a tool in determining the effective rank of a perturbed matrix is that of distinguishing between significantly small and significantly large singular values to the end, conference regions are derived for the perturbed singular values of matrices with noisy observation data. The analysis is based on the theories of perturbations of singular values and statistical significance test. Threshold bounds for perturbation due to finite-precision and i.i.d. random models are evaluated. In random models, the threshold bounds depend on the dimension of the matrix, the noisy variance, and predefined statistical level of significance. Results applied to the problem of determining the effective order of a linear autoregressive system from the approximate rank of a sample autocorrelation matrix are considered. Various numerical examples illustrating the usefulness of these bounds and comparisons to other previously known approaches are given.

Discrete analysis of spatial-sensitivity models

Procedures for reducing the computational burden of current models of spatial vision are described, the simplifications being consistent with the prediction of the complete model. A method for using pattern-sensitivity measurements to estimate the initial linear transformation is also proposed which is based on the assumption that detection performance is monotonic with the vector length of the sensor responses. It is shown how contrast-threshold data can be used to estimate the linear transformation needed to characterize threshold performance.

Spectroscopy and diode laser-pumped operation of Tm, Ho:YAG

Spectroscopic measurements and analysis of diode laser-pumped operation of Tm, Ho:YAG at 2.1 microns at room temperature have been performed. The peak effective stimulated emission cross section is measured to be 9 x 10-21 sq cm at 2.091 microns and the upper state lifetime is 8.5 ms. Under diode laser pumping, thresholds of 4.4 mW of absorbed power and slope efficiency of 19 percent have been demonstrated. Calculations of threshold power are performed based on the spectroscopic measurements. An energy transfer upconversion process is identified which leads to a sublinear rise in upper-state population with pump power.

Characteristics and kinetics of laser-pumped Ti:sapphire oscillators

The experimental performance of a gain-switched Ti:sapphire laser oscillator pumped by a frequency-doubled Q-switched Nd:YAG laser system is presented for a variety of operating conditions. A theoretical model developed for this oscillator predicts well its performance. The observed curved input-output energy plots for the oscillator result from the kinetics of gain switching and fluorescence decay during the gain buildup period. Fluorescence decay also produces observed oscillator thresholds higher than those normally predicted by the standard gain-equals-loss condition. Gain-switched parasitic modes, with a higher threshold but shorter round-trip time than the resonator mode, cause the resonator mode to oscillate only over a finite range of pump energies. Spectroscopic investigations show that the Ti:sapphire cross-section spectrum is well fit by a Poisson distribution, giving a peak cross section of 3 x 10 to the -19th sq cm for the pi polarization.

Technique to select the optimum modulation indices for suppression of undesired signals for simultaneous range and data operations

An algorithm to search for the optimum set of modulation indices that will optimize a given simultaneous range/command/telemetry communications link is presented. This technique provides a way to suppress the ranging signal in order to limit performance degradation in the data channel due to interference from the ranging channel to a desired level, given a specified ranging accuracy. The link (when optimized) will (1) provide maximum available power to both the data and ranging channels for a specified degradation in the data channel so that it will transmit at the required data rate, (2) achieve a specified ranging accuracy over a maximum distance, under a certain set of conditions, and (3) provide adequate power for carrier tracking without degrading the data-channel thresholds. In addition, both data and ranging channels will fall below the threshold at the same point.
