Solar Activities Associated with 3 He-rich Solar Energetic Particle Events Observed by Solar Orbiter

A series of 3 He-rich solar energetic particle (SEP) events was observed by Solar Orbiter in May 2021 at a radial distance of 0.95 AU. An isolated active region AR 12824 was likely the ultimate source of these SEP events. The period of the enhanced flux of 3He was also a period of frequent type III bursts in the decametric-hectometric range, confirming their close relationship. As in past studies, we try to find the solar activities possibly responsible for 3 He-rich SEP events, using the type III bursts close to the particle injection times estimated from the velocity dispersion. But this exercise is not as straightforward as in many of the past studies since the region produced many more type III bursts and jet-like eruptions than the SEP injections. We may generalize the solar activities for the 3 He-rich SEP events in question as coronal jets, but their appearances do not necessarily conform to classic jets that consist of a footpoint and a spire. Conversely, such jets often did not accompany type III bursts. The areas that produced jet-like eruptions changed within the active region from the first to the second set of 3 He-rich SEP events, which may be related to the extended coronal mass ejection that launched stealthily.

Chemical fractionation in the solar system

The cosmochemical and geochemical history of planetary material is reflected in relative and absolute abundances of two groups of trace elements; siderophiles and volatiles. Many of these elements can be determined at the required levels only by radiochemical neutron activation analysis. The abundance patterns of elements in chondritic meteorites result from condensation processes in the solar nebula. The composition of planetisimals which bombarded the moon is characterized from trace elements in lunar breccias, and is also related to nebula processes. Trace elements in anorthosites and basalts from earth and moon suggest that the moon is refractory-rich and volatile-poor relative to the earth.

The effect of H2O gas on volatilities of planet-forming major elements. I - Experimental determination of thermodynamic properties of Ca-, Al-, and Si-hydroxide gas molecules and its application to the solar nebula

The vapor pressures of Ca(OH)2(g), Al(OH)3(g), and Si(OH)4(g) molecules in equilibrium with solid calcium-, aluminum, and silicon-oxides, respectively, were determined, and were used to derive the heats of formation and entropies of these species, which are expected to be abundant under the currently postulated physical conditions in the primordial solar nebula. These data, in conjunction with thermodynamic data from literature, were used to calculate the relative abundances of M, MO(x), and M(OH)n gas species and relative volatilities of Fe, Mg, Si, Ca, and Al for ranges of temperature, total pressure, and H/O abundance ratio corresponding to the plausible ranges of physical conditions in the solar nebula. The results are used to explain how Ca and Al could have evaporated from Ca,Al-rich inclusions in carbonaceous chondrites, while Si, Mg, and Fe condensed onto them during the preaccretion alteration of CAIs.

Model ozone photochemistry on the basis of Solar Mesosphere Explorer mesospheric observations

Morning and afternoon mesospheric ozone profiles (50-90 km) measured by the Solar Mesosphere Explorer (SME) satellite are analyzed with one-dimensional photochemical models. The observed ozone abundances are 40 percent and 100 percent greater than the model ozone abundances at 50 and 80 km, respectively. Diurnal model calculations are compared with SME observations of ozone profiles at about 0400 and 1400 LT for high northern summer latitudes. Analysis of the ratios of these early morning and midafternoon ozone profiles provides the additional constraint that larger odd-oxygen production rates are required if lower odd-hydrogen activity is invoked to increase model O3 abundances. The increase in odd-oxygen production must be solar zenith angle independent in the mesosphere, ruling out significant changes in the Schumann-Runge band O2 opacities from Allen and Frederrick (1982).

Main sequence models for massive zero-metal stars

Zero-age main-sequence models for stars of 20, 10, 5, and 2 solar masses with no heavy elements are constructed for three different possible primordial helium abundances: Y=0.00, Y=0.23, and Y=0.30. The latter two values of Y bracket the range of primordial helium abundances cited by Wagoner. With the exceptions of the two 20 solar mass models that contain helium, these models are found to be self-consistent in the sense that the formation of carbon through the triple-alpha process during premain sequence contraction is not sufficient to bring the CN cycle into competition with the proton-proton chain on the ZAMS. The zero-metal models of the present study have higher surface and central temperatures, higher central densities, smaller radii, and smaller convective cores than do the population I models with the same masses.

A search for H-2, H-3, and He-3 in large solar flares

The results of a new study of solar flare H and He isotopes imply that earlier observations have significantly overestimated the abundances of H-2, H-3, and He-3 in large solar flares. No evidence is found that solar flare nuclei have suffered any significant amount of fragmentation before escaping from the sun.

Physical, Chemical, and Petrological Characteristics of Chondritic Materials and Their Relationships to Small Solar System Bodies: Chapter - 2

Chondrite materials with varying abundances of volatile-bearing phases are expected at the destinations for the asteroid sample-return missions Hayabusa2 and OSIRIS-REx. The targets of the missions are 162173 (1999 JU3) Ryugu and 101955 (1999 RQ36) Bennu. Spectroscopic analyses of these asteroids suggest that their surface materials are related to types 1 and 2 carbonaceous chondrites. Some studies suggest that the parent bodies of these chondrites may have also experienced some thermal and/or shock metamorphism. The physical properties of boulders at asteroid surfaces and fine particles in asteroid regoliths are consequences of the diverse processes that fragmented them, mobilized them, and redeposited them in unique accumulations. Sample-return missions are likely to encounter a broad range of carbonaceous chondrite (CC)-like materials, to which aqueous alteration, thermal, and shock metamorphism imparted changes affecting their sub-micron- to meter-scale physical properties. Consequently, implementation of scale-dependent analytical techniques to the study of the chemical, physical, and geotechnical characteristics of these CC-like materials is fundamental to safe mission operations, sample selection, and return. However, most of the available knowledge for informing and formulating expectations about regolith processes, products, and properties on carbonaceous small bodies comes from missions that studied anhydrous (e.g., Itokawa studied by Hayabusa) and/or much larger asteroids (e.g., Vesta studied by Dawn). No previous mission is likely directly relevant to small ice-free carbonaceous NEOs 162173 Ryugu or 101955 Bennu, although the Rosetta Spaceraft performed a flyby of the large asteroid Lutetia which has variously been classified as M and C type (Pätzold et al., 2011). Carbonaceous chondrites carry the best record of the history, distribution, and activity of water in the early solar system. Ordinary and Enstatite chondrites carry only partial records, but these are still critical to understanding the full story. We will describe the records of water-rock interactions on asteroids, as recorded in these meteorites, with particular emphasis on the timing, nature, settings, and fluid compositions. An integral part of this story is the rare, but fortunate, preservation of actual early solar system water as aqueous fluid inclusions.

The Jovian atmospheric window at 2.7 microns: A search for H2S

The atmospheric transmission window at 2.7 microns in Jupiter's atmosphere was observed at a spectral resolution of 0.1/cm from the Kuiiper Airborne Observatory. From an analysis of the CH4 abundance (80 m-am) and the H2O abundance ( 0.0125 cm-am) it was determined that the penetration depth of solar flux at 2.7 microns is near the base of the NH3 cloud layer. The upper limit to H2O at 2.7 microns and other results suggest that photolytic reactions in Jupiter's lower troposphere may not be as significant as was previously thought. A search for H2S in Jupiter's atmosphere yielded an upper limit of 0.1 cm-am. The corresponding limit to the element abundance ratio S/H was approx. 1.7x10(-8), about 10(-3) times the solar value. Upon modeling the abundance and distribution of H2S in Jupiter's atmosphere it was concluded that, contrary to expectations, sulfur-bearing chromophores are not present in significant amounts in Jupiter's visible clouds. Rather, it appears that most of Jupiter's sulfur is locked up as NH4SH in a lower cloud layer. Alternatively, the global abundance of sulfur in Jupiter may be significantly depleted.

Wolf-Rayet stars as starting points or as endpoints of the evolution of massive stars?

The paper investigates the evidence for the two interpretations of Wolf-Rayet stars suggested in the literature: (1) massive premain-sequence stars with disks and (2) massive stars which have lost most of their H-rich layers in a stellar wind is investigated. The abundance determinations which are done in two different ways and which lead to different conclusions are discussed. The composition is solar, which would suggest interpretation (1), or the CNO abundances are strongly anomalous, which would suggest interpretation (2). Results from evolutionary calculations, stellar statistics, the existence of Ofpe/WN9 transition stars and W-R stars with evolved companions show overwhelming evidence that W-R stars are not premain-sequence stars but that they are in a late stage of evolution. Moreover, the fact that W-R stars are usually in clear regions of space, whereas massive premain-sequence stars are embedded in ultracompact H II regions also shows that W-R stars are not young premain-sequence stars.

Lunar production of solar cells

The feasibility of manufacturing of solar cells on the moon for spacecraft applications is examined. Because of the much lower escape velocity, there is a great advantage in lunar manufacture of solar cells compared to Earth manufacture. Silicon is abundant on the moon, and new refining methods allow it to be reduced and purified without extensive reliance on materials unavailable on the moon. Silicon and amorphous silicon solar cells could be manufactured on the moon for use in space. Concepts for the production of a baseline amorphous silicon cell are discussed, and specific power levels are calculated for cells designed for both lunar and Earth manufacture.

Extending the chemical reach of the H3 survey: detailed abundances of the dwarf-galaxy stellar stream Wukong/LMS-1

ABSTRACT We present the first detailed chemical-abundance analysis of stars from the dwarf-galaxy stellar stream Wukong/LMS-1 covering a wide metallicity range ($-3.5 \lt \rm [Fe/H] \lesssim -1.3$). We find abundance patterns that are effectively indistinguishable from the bulk of Indus and Jhelum, a pair of smaller stellar streams proposed to be dynamically associated with Wukong/LMS-1. We confirmed a carbon-enhanced metal-poor star ($\rm [C/Fe] \gt +0.7$ and $\rm [Fe/H] \sim -2.9$) in Wukong/LMS-1 with strong enhancements in Sr, Y, and Zr, which is peculiar given its solar-level [Ba/Fe]. Wukong/LMS-1 stars have high abundances of α elements up to $\rm [Fe/H] \gtrsim -2$, which is expected for relatively massive dwarfs. Towards the high-metallicity end, Wukong/LMS-1 becomes α-poor, revealing that it probably experienced fairly standard chemical evolution. We identified a pair of N- and Na-rich stars in Wukong/LMS-1, reminiscent of multiple stellar populations in globular clusters. This indicates that this dwarf galaxy contained at least one globular cluster that was completely disrupted in addition to two intact ones previously known to be associated with Wukong/LMS-1, which is possibly connected to similar evidence found in Indus. From these ≥3 globular clusters, we estimate the total mass of Wukong/LMS-1 to be ${\approx }10^{10} \, \mathrm{M}_\odot$, representing ∼1 per cent of the present-day Milky Way. Finally, the [Eu/Mg] ratio in Wukong/LMS-1 continuously increases with metallicity, making this the first example of a dwarf galaxy where the production of r-process elements is clearly dominated by delayed sources, presumably neutron-star mergers.

The field horizontal-branch star HD 109995: New results with coadded ultraviolet and optical region spectra

A comprehensive ultraviolet and optical region abundance analysis of the field horizontal branch Population 2 A-type star HD 109995 is described. Coaddition of IUE high dispersion images and DAO 6.5 A/mm IIaO spectrograms improved the signal-to-noise ratio of the data. We have identified ultraviolet lines whose analysis will provide more complete and accurate elemental abundances than those obtained from optical region spectra alone. A preliminary elemental abundance analysis of the optical region shows that log Z/Z (solar) approx. = -2. A first attempt to synthesize two Fe 2 ultraviolet resonance lines yields an iron abundance a few tenths of a deg higher than the average obtained from optical region Fe 2 lines.

Primordial retention of carbon by the terrestrial planets

The thermodynamics of graphite, carbide, and carbonate formation in the presence of a solar-composition gas is examined, including the feasibility of producing solid solutions of carbon and carbides in metallic iron-nickel alloy. Gas-phase composition and graphite activities for a very wide range of nebular pressures and temperatures are calculated by a computer program that considers several hundred compounds, particularly all the important gaseous species containing H, C, O, N, S, Cl, P, and F. The results obtained indicate that CH4 and CO would be the dominant carbon compounds under all likely circumstances of temperature and pressure in the solar nebula, that graphite may have been the most abundant carbon species in certain cases, and that direct precipitation of graphite, carbides, or carbonates would have been impossible in the solar nebula. Carbon retention by the terrestrial planets is also investigated.

New Results From Chandra: Abundances in Stellar Coronae

There is considerable evidence, both solar and stellar, that the chemical compositions of stellar coronae differ from their underlying 1)hotospheres. The differences for solar-type stars appear to be related to FIP, whereas the differences for active stars are more mysterious and perhaps suggest metal depletion. Results to-date will be reviewed and new results from the Chandra X-ray Observatory based on calibration and Emission Line Project observations of late-type stellar coronae, will be presented.

Enstatite Meteorites and the Original Heterogeneity of Mn-53 Distribution in the Solar Nebula

We have shown earlier that the relative abundance of radiogenic Cr-53 in bulk ordinary chondrites (approximately 0.48 epsilon) is clearly different from that in the earth-moon system (0 epsilon). The SNC parent body (Mars) is characterized by an intermediate Cr-53 excess (approximately 0.23 epsilon). We have also shown that the Mn-Cr systematics of the howardite-eucrite-diogenite parent body (HED PB, the asteroid Vesta) is consistent with the chondritic Mn/Cr ratio in the bulk HED PB and that it has a Cr-53 excess of approximately 0.5 epsilon units which is within error the same as that of chondrites. It appears that the excesses of Cr-53 in these planets are a function of their present heliocentric distance. The study of some other meteorite classes (angrites, pallasites, primitive achondrites) has shown that their Mn-CR systematics is consistent with that of the ordinary chondrites. The observed gradient in the radiogenic Cr-53 abundances can be explained by a). an early volatility controlled radial Mn/Cr fractionation in the nebula or b). an original heterogeneity of Mn-53. The first assumption, however, requires the Mn/Cr ratios of the bulk Earth and Mars to be considerably lower than the inferred model Mn/Cr ratios for these two planets. For this reason, we suggested that the observed gradient is due to an original radial Mn-53 heterogeneity in the late nebula.

Elemental abundances of the supernova remnant G292.0+1.8: Evidence for a massive progenitor

We present a comprehensive nonequilibrium ionization (NEI) analysis of X-ray spectral data from the Einstein Observatory and EXOSAT for the supernova remnant G292.0+1.8. The spectra are well described by a single-temperature, single-timescale NEI model with kT = 1.64(sub -0.19)(sup +0.29) keV and n(sub e)t = (5.55(sub -1.12)(sup +1.2) x 10(exp 10)s/cu cm, which establishes that this remnant is indeed young and in the ionizing phase of evolution of its X-ray spectrum. We determine the abundances of the elements O, Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ar, and Fe and examine their variation over the allowed range of column density, kT, and n(sub e)t. Numerical calculations of the nucleosynthesis expected for a 25 solar mass progenitor agree best with the fitted abundances; in fact the minimum rms percent difference between this model and the derived abundances is only 15%. From the fitted emission measure and a simple geometric model of the remnant we estimate the mass of X-ray-emitting plasma to be 9.3(sub -6.2)(sup +1.19) solar mass, for an assumed distance of 4.8 +/- 1.6 kpc. Additional errors on this mass estimate, from clumping of the ejecta, for example, may be substantial. No evidence was found for a difference in the thermodynamic state of the plasma as a function of elemental composition based on analysis of the individual ionization timescales of the various species. In this sense then, G292.0+1.8 resembles the remnant Cas A (another product of a massive star supernova), while it is different from the remnants of SN 1572 (Tycho) and SN 1006, both of which are believed to be from Type Ia supernovae.

A Photochemical Phosphorus-Hydrogen-Oxygen Network for Hydrogen-dominated Exoplanet Atmospheres

Due to the detection of phosphine (PH 3 ) in the solar system gas giants Jupiter and Saturn, PH 3 has long been suggested to be detectable in exosolar substellar atmospheres too. However, to date, direct detection of phosphine has proven to be elusive in exoplanet atmosphere surveys. We construct an updated phosphorus-hydrogen-oxygen (PHO) photochemical network suitable for the simulation of gas giant hydrogen-dominated atmospheres. Using this network, we examine PHO photochemistry in hot Jupiter and warm Neptune exoplanet atmospheres at solar and enriched metallicities. Our results show for HD 189733b-like hot Jupiters that HOPO, PO, and P 2 are typically the dominant P carriers at pressures important for transit and emission spectra, rather than PH 3 . For GJ1214b-like warm Neptune atmospheres our results suggest that at solar metallicity PH 3 is dominant in the absence of photochemistry, but is generally not in high abundance for all other chemical environments. At 10 and 100 times solar, small oxygenated phosphorus molecules such as HOPO and PO dominate for both thermochemical and photochemical simulations. The network is able to reproduce well the observed PH 3 abundances on Jupiter and Saturn. Despite progress in improving the accuracy of the PHO network, large portions of the reaction rate data remain with approximate, uncertain, or missing values, which could change the conclusions of the current study significantly. Improving understanding of the kinetics of phosphorus-bearing chemical reactions will be a key undertaking for astronomers aiming to detect phosphine and other phosphorus species in both rocky and gaseous exoplanetary atmospheres in the near future.
