Ba₁₋ₓSrₓFeO₃₋ᵧ as an Improved Oxygen Carrier for Chemical Looping Air Separation: A Computational and Experimental Study

Chemical looping air separation (CLAS) is a promising method to generate pure carbon-dioxide from fuel combustion with a pure oxygen stream, which is produced through the capture, and targeted release, of oxygen from the atmosphere using a solid oxide carrier. The performance of this process depends on the redox characteristics of the oxide carrier. Using experimental oxygen-temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), the study shows that Ba₀․₇₅Sr₀․₂₅FeO₃ has improved oxygen storage capacity (OSC), oxidation, and reduction kinetics over pristine SrFeO₃ at temperatures ranging from 300-500 °C. The redox energetics computed by using first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations also depict the measured trend establishing it as an important descriptor of the measured performance. The Ba₁₋ₓSrₓFeO₃₋ᵧ depicts a Sr-substitution and oxygen stoichiometry induced structural phase transition from hexagonal at low temperatures to pseudo-cubic phase with higher OSC up to T=400 °C. Also, the mechanism leading to this structural phase transition is identified by performing electronic and vibrational structural calculations. This presentation was given on March 8, 2024 at the APS March Meeting in Minneapolis, MN.

The Computational Analysis of a Generic Hypersonic Store Separation

Many current hypersonic vehicles involve a main vehicle from which components separate during flight and presents simulation challenges such as shock-shock interactions, highly nonlinear interactions, and shock wave boundary layer interactions. These aerodynamic phenomena influence the attitude and trajectory of each object, which needs to be understood before large-scale experiments can be run. To gain a generic understanding of the process, high-fidelity Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes solutions are performed on a conical vehicle geometry passing through an oblique shock wave that is representative of different configurations and scenarios. Trajectory and applied forces are tracked and show the vehicle’s dynamics are predominantly the result of differential flow incidence angles causing a strong shock; this leads to a large pressure increase over a fraction of the vehicle, which influences pitch. The vehicle appears to follow conventional stability theory with detached eddy simulation and small disturbances in initial attitude shown to have minimal influence on the scenario.

Device and methods for determination of molecular weight distributions of polymers and distributions of other polymer properties without physical separation

Devices and methods for determining the cumulative distribution of a polymer property in a reactor without physical separation of reaction subcomponents. The device includes a means of measuring an instantaneous property of the polymers being produced in a reaction vessel a plurality of times during a polymerization reaction as well as a means of determining the corresponding change in polymer concentration in the reaction vessel between measurements of the instantaneous polymer property. The device also includes a means of computing a statistical distribution appropriate to the polymer characteristic and applying the statistical distribution to a recently measured instantaneous value of the polymer property so as to have an instantaneous distribution of the polymer property and a means of adding together the instantaneous distributions of the polymer property in order to obtain the cumulative distribution of the polymer property in the reactor.

Vessel and method for solid-liquid separation

Devices, systems, and methods for separating solids from liquids are disclosed. A vessel includes an inlet, a carrier liquid outlet, a product outlet, a purifying section, and a heater. The inlet directs a slurry into the purifying section. The slurry comprises particles of a solid and a carrier liquid. The purifying section preferentially drives the particles of the solid towards a heating zone of the purifying section versus the carrier liquid. This displaces a first portion of the carrier liquid away from the heating zone of the purifying section. The heater heats the slurry. The carrier liquid outlet drives a majority of the carrier liquid out of the vessel. The product outlet is adjacent to the heating zone of the purifying section.

Extraction and Separation of Rare-Earth Elements from Coal Fly Ash and Leachate using a Recyclable Ionic Liquid

Coal fly ash (CFA) can be a promising source for recovering rare-earth elements (REEs), as it contains a broad range of REEs with average concentrations frequently exceeding those in traditional rare earth mines. Recent research from our group has demonstrated that REEs can be preferentially extracted from CFA solids using a recyclable ionic liquid (IL), betainium bis-(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([Hbet][Tf2N]). When CFA was heated with the mixture of IL and an aqueous solution above 65°C, most leached REEs partitioned into the IL phase and were separated from the bulk elements. Subsequent acid stripping of the REE-loaded IL removed the REEs and regenerated the IL for reuse in multiple extraction cycles. This IL-based REE-CFA recovery method has been applied to ten CFA samples derived from different coal sources, including ash recovered from disposal ponds. Analysis of 34 elements confirmed the process consistently achieved high REE recovery efficiency, with strong selectivity over bulk and trace elements across diverse CFA types. In addition to the IL-solid extraction, the performance of [Hbet][Tf2N] in extracting REEs from fly-ash leachates have been evaluated by four commonly used leaching reagents, including HCl, HNO3, H2SO4, and citrate. During the IL-leachate extraction, [Hbet][Tf2N] was mixed and heated with a Class C fly ash leachate generated from each leaching reagent, followed by an acid stripping. It was observed that the partitioning and recovery of REEs increased as the leachate pH increased from 3 to 11. Among the investigated leachates, HCl and citrate proved to be the most compatible with IL extraction, exhibiting a slightly higher REE recovery and a lower non-REE co-extraction compared to the IL-solid extraction. Sc, Y, Nd, Sm, Gd, Dy, and Yb consistently showed a high recovery rate from both CFA solids and leachates. Notably, Pr, Tb, and Ho, which were not previously leached from the CFA solids, were partially recovered from the leachates. Overall, our studies revealed the strong potential of [Hbet][Tf2N] for effectively recovering REEs from leachates, highlighting its applicability as a sustainable strategy for other aqueous REE feedstocks. Furthermore, a techno-economic analysis will be performed to quantify the economic viability of the IL-based REE recovery method and guide future process improvement.

Novel Electrochemical Technique: Serial Open Circuit Potentiometry to Examine the Separability of Lanthanides in Molten Salts

The accumulation of lanthanide fission products in molten salts reduces the efficiency of pyroprocessing used nuclear fuel. Lanthanide fission products are notoriously difficult to separate due to their similar physical and electrical properties. We developed a novel electrochemical technique called serial open circuit potentiometry (SOCP) which allows us to delineate between metal deposition reactions with similar reduction potentials to great precision. SOCP has several advantages over traditional open circuit potentiometry including its ability to create 3D plots that describe all metal deposition reactions in a system. This information can be used to precisely determine equilibrium potentials of metal deposition reactions and quantify their error, determine nucleation potentials, and determine the nucleation and growth mechanism. In this work, we demonstrated the effectiveness of SOCP by studying molten salt mixtures containing CeCl3, GdCl3, and both CeCl3 and GdCl3 in LiCl-KCl eutectic.
