Computational processor-in-memory with enhanced strided memory access

A computational memory for a computer. The memory includes a memory bank having a selected-row buffer and being configured to store records up to a number, K. The memory also includes an accumulator connected to the memory bank, the accumulator configured to store up to K records. The memory also includes an arithmetic and logic unit (ALU) connected to the accumulator and to the selected row buffer of the memory bank, the ALU having an indirect network of 2K ports for reading and writing records in the memory bank and the accumulator, and the ALU further physically configured to operate as a sorting network. The memory also includes a controller connected to the memory bank, the ALU, and the accumulator, the controller being hardware configured to direct operation of the ALU.

Arrangements for communicating data in a computing system using multiple processors

Systems and methods for reducing data movement in a computer system. The systems and methods use information or knowledge about the structure of an algorithm, operations to be executed at a receiving processing unit, variables or subsets or groups of variables in a distributed algorithm, or other forms of contextual information, for reducing the number of bits transmitted from at least one transmitting processing unit to at least one receiving processing unit or storage device.

Runtime localized cooling of high-performance processors

A plurality of thermal electric cooler (TEC) elements are formed in a TEC grid structure. Control logic dynamically varies a supply current supplied to each TEC element (or group of TEC elements) in the TEC grid based on changes in power density respectively associated with areas cooled by each of the TEC elements or group of TEC elements.

Phononic bus for coherent interfaces between a superconducting quantum processor, spin memory, and photonic quantum networks

A hybrid quantum system performs high-fidelity quantum state transduction between a superconducting (SC) microwave qubit and the ground state spin system of a solid-state artificial atom. This transduction is mediated via an acoustic bus connected by piezoelectric transducers to the SC microwave qubit. For SC circuit qubits and diamond silicon vacancy centers in an optimized phononic cavity, the system can achieve quantum state transduction with fidelity exceeding 99% at a MHz-scale bandwidth. By combining the complementary strengths of SC circuit quantum computing and artificial atoms, the hybrid quantum system provides high-fidelity qubit gates with long-lived quantum memory, high-fidelity measurement, large qubit number, reconfigurable qubit connectivity, and high-fidelity state and gate teleportation through optical quantum networks.

Comment on "Comment on "Traversable wormhole dynamics on a quantum processor" "

We observe that the comment of [1, arXiv:2302.07897] is consistent with [2] on key points: i) the microscopic mechanism of the experimentally observed teleportation is size winding and ii) the system thermalizes and scrambles at the time of teleportation. These properties are consistent with a gravitational interpretation of the teleportation dynamics, as opposed to the late-time dynamics. The objections of [1] concern counterfactual scenarios outside of the experimentally implemented protocol.

Graphics processor unit with opportunistic inter-path reconvergence

A graphics processing unit and methods for comping and executing instructions with opportunistic inter-path reconvergence are provided. A graphics processing unit may access computer executable instructions mapped to code blocks of a control flow for a warp. The code blocks may include an immediate dominator block and an intermediate post dominator block. The graphics processing unit may store a first thread mask associated with the first code block. The first thread mask may include a plurality of bits indicative of the active or non-active status for the threads of the warp, respectively. The graphics processing unit may a second thread mask corresponding to an intermediate code block between the immediate dominator block and intermediate post dominator block. The graphics processing unit may execute, with threads indicated as active by the first thread mask, instructions of the intermediate code block with a first operand or a second operand depending on the second thread mask.

Parallelization of the Pipelined Thomas Algorithm

In this study the following questions are addressed. Is it possible to improve the parallelization efficiency of the Thomas algorithm? How should the Thomas algorithm be formulated in order to get solved lines that are used as data for other computational tasks while processors are idle? To answer these questions, two-step pipelined algorithms (PAs) are introduced formally. It is shown that the idle processor time is invariant with respect to the order of backward and forward steps in PAs starting from one outermost processor. The advantage of PAs starting from two outermost processors is small. Versions of the pipelined Thomas algorithms considered here fall into the category of PAs. These results show that the parallelization efficiency of the Thomas algorithm cannot be improved directly. However, the processor idle time can be used if some data has been computed by the time processors become idle. To achieve this goal the Immediate Backward pipelined Thomas Algorithm (IB-PTA) is developed in this article. The backward step is computed immediately after the forward step has been completed for the first portion of lines. This enables the completion of the Thomas algorithm for some of these lines before processors become idle. An algorithm for generating a static processor schedule recursively is developed. This schedule is used to switch between forward and backward computations and to control communications between processors. The advantage of the IB-PTA over the basic PTA is the presence of solved lines, which are available for other computations, by the time processors become idle.

The Efficiency of Various Computers and Optimizations in Performing Finite Element Computations

With the advent of computers with many processors, it becomes unclear how to best exploit this advantage. For example, matrices can be inverted by applying several processors to each vector operation, or one processor can be applied to each matrix. The former approach has diminishing returns beyond a handful of processors, but how many processors depends on the computer architecture. Applying one processor to each matrix is feasible with enough ram memory and scratch disk space, but the speed at which this is done is found to vary by a factor of three depending on how it is done. The cost of the computer must also be taken into account. A computer with many processors and fast interprocessor communication is much more expensive than the same computer and processors with slow interprocessor communication. Consequently, for problems that require several matrices to be inverted, the best speed per dollar for computers is found to be several small workstations that are networked together, such as in a Beowulf cluster. Since these machines typically have two processors per node, each matrix is most efficiently inverted with no more than two processors assigned to it.
